Balance Sheet Strength: A Retrospective Analysis Of Corporate Liquidity And Solvency And Firm Stock Returns, Andrew Wraith
Balance Sheet Strength: A Retrospective Analysis Of Corporate Liquidity And Solvency And Firm Stock Returns, Andrew Wraith
CMC Senior Theses
The onset COVID-19 Pandemic caused rippling effects throughout the global economy. Social distancing and stay at home orders shifted consumer demand, as the firmwide impact of these same policies led to supply chain shortages. The COVID-19 Pandemic induced a recession in 2020 that was unique from all others in US history. Throughout the beginning months of the Pandemic, firms rushed to raise debt, equity, and lines of credit, as public financing markets experienced increased volatility. How did the markets adapt to this sudden change? I examine the effect on stock returns of firmwide Balance Sheet strength as it changed throughout …
Exploring The Politics Of Fear And Its Intersection With Anti-Asian Violence And Discrimination In The Context Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Madelyn Kwun
CMC Senior Theses
This thesis examines the linkage between the politics of fear and anti-Asian sentiment and violence following the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Canada and Australia. While anti-Asian sentiment is not new, society does not always address it or educate people on the Asian experience. Throughout the history in which Asians arrived in both Canada and Australia, what started with Chinese exclusion in the late 1800s, led to further discrimination in society leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic. The early foundations of mistrust and disgust towards Asians in Canada and Australia made the onset of the COVID- 19 pandemic worse …
Case Study On The Impacts Of Covid-19 On Remote Work And Compensation In The San Francisco Bay Area, Carson Stubstad
Case Study On The Impacts Of Covid-19 On Remote Work And Compensation In The San Francisco Bay Area, Carson Stubstad
CMC Senior Theses
COVID-19 has changed the way that organizations conduct business. Stay-at-home orders shifted many workers, who traditionally worked in-person, to remote work. Research has been done to understand the macro impacts and organization impacts of remote work, but very little research has been conducted on the impact of wages. This paper studies the effects of remote work during and after COVID-19 lockdowns on wages. This thesis uses the San Francisco Bay Area as a case study. The findings suggest that remote workers are being paid higher after the lockdown in the area. I analyze these trends by controlling for a variety …
The Influence Of Political Party Affiliation And Park Accessibility On Covid-19 Case Incidence, Sascha Wolf-Sorokin
The Influence Of Political Party Affiliation And Park Accessibility On Covid-19 Case Incidence, Sascha Wolf-Sorokin
CMC Senior Theses
This paper examines the joint effect of political party affiliation and the urban landscape, as measured by access to parks, on case rates during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. The 2016 and 2020 U.S. Presidential Election returns are used as a proxy for a county’s political party affiliation prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A county population’s spatial relationship to its parks encapsulates the green open space within an urban environment. The data set controls for features of the built environment, socioeconomic and demographic characteristics (race, gender, income, education), COVID-19 government regulations, and presidential election returns. Using …
Liquidity Outbreak: A 49 Country Analysis Of The Money Supply’S Effect On Stock Markets During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Dylan Porter
Liquidity Outbreak: A 49 Country Analysis Of The Money Supply’S Effect On Stock Markets During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Dylan Porter
CMC Senior Theses
This paper compares the effects of monthly money growth on monthly stock market performance in 49 countries around the world before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Countries are grouped in aggregate, by continent, and development status. OLS panel regressions show that lagged monetary growth variables are better monetary indicators of stock market performance than contemporaneous values. Variables that measure the pandemic’s progress (infections/deaths and government responses) are included alongside macro-economic variables but are seldom significant. Monetary growth had less correlation with the stock market during the pre-pandemic period (January 2018 - December 2020), suggesting that the uncertain economic conditions of …
Seeing Forced Isolation Through New Eyes: Covid-19, Anne Frank, And The Violence Of The Nation-State, Anna Raines
Seeing Forced Isolation Through New Eyes: Covid-19, Anne Frank, And The Violence Of The Nation-State, Anna Raines
CMC Senior Theses
In my senior thesis, I explore the social, political, and cultural effects and consequences of forced isolation. Forced isolation is a strategy adopted by governments in order to deal with a range of issues in contemporary history, often resulting in exclusionary practices, the redefinition or assertion of national sovereignty and nation-state boundaries, contagion, detention, and imprisonment. As a consequence of these varied processes and actions, when an individual or a social group is forced into an isolated space and ostracized from society, they are cast out of routine socialization, and the effects of this can endure even if a return …
An Agent-Centered Approach To Covid-19 Vaccinations, Nila Venkat
An Agent-Centered Approach To Covid-19 Vaccinations, Nila Venkat
CMC Senior Theses
The rise of COVID-19 has dramatically affected the global economy, healthcare systems, and individuals’ daily lives. One of the most controversial attempts to ameliorate the effects of the virus in the United States has been the distribution of COVID-19 vaccinations. In this thesis, I propose a novel agent-centered approach to motivating COVID-19 vaccinations. I begin by exploring the origins and evolution of the virus, along with the growing demographic of “vaccine-hesitant” Americans, to contextualize the debate surrounding vaccinations. I then propose two potential action-based response strategies for vaccine motivation: a vaccine mandate and nudges. Concerning a mandate response strategy, I …
