Olfactory Vision: Recollection Of Visual Information Through Smell In Graphic Design, Monica Suarez Argudin May 2023

Olfactory Vision: Recollection Of Visual Information Through Smell In Graphic Design, Monica Suarez Argudin

Art and Design Theses

Olfactory Vision is a social study conducted to understand the influence of a scent within graphic design processes, enhancing the recollection of details. Twenty-four random adults were tested. The experiment was divided into three groups, A, B, and C, presenting two sets of cards; the first had symbols, and the second one had typefaces. A summary of the investigation was provided; however, the rose oil fragrance was not revealed, avoiding conditioning the subjects. The participants had an in-person and follow-up questionnaire one week after, testing their short and long-term memory. The results generally showed no significant difference between genders. In …

So It Seems, Kourtney Stone May 2021

So It Seems, Kourtney Stone

Art and Design Theses

Memory is powerful, yet paradoxical. Fragmented and mutable, its pliability causes us to question the truthfulness of personal narratives and family mythologies. The assemblage sculptures in So It Seems are meditations on the nature of memory and how we construct stories about our lived experiences. By intertwining found and sculpted objects, I invite viewers to indulge in the human tendency to seek relationships between disparate elements. Each work includes figurative sculpture, employed for its historical function in constructing social narratives, as well as pre-made items that operate indexically and nostalgically, invoking time periods in twentieth and twenty-first century America. Relationships …

Abandoned: Shopping malls' definition in 2021. Once a magnificent symbol of suburban sprawl, now left in crumbles to die. This thesis project aims to make the mall relevant to people's lives by repurposing its buildings as part of a mixed-use complex. Beginning with a study of the shopping mall's history and New Urbanism concepts, I propose that a mall is not just a public place for gathering, sharing experiences, and building memories but also a reflection of a neighborhood's identity.

Good Girl: Sweaty Palms And The Smile, Nuni Lee May 2018

Good Girl: Sweaty Palms And The Smile, Nuni Lee

Art and Design Theses

My thesis exhibition “Good Girl: Sweaty Palms and the Smile” is a combination of paintings, small figurines, and a video piece illustrating the complicated emotions that arise from childhood memories and childlike impulses. My work revolves around a central figure, Good Girl. She is the reflection of me as an artist and manifests my attempt to hold on to my inner child, which is triggered by my desire to relieve her from dark emotions that she felt in her childhood. Good Girl is also a representation of a typical young girl who feels anxious about growing up. Noticeably infantile and …

4sh: Coping Via Crayons, Canvas, And Mixed-Media Artmaking, Whitney Forsh

Art and Design Theses

This arts-based thesis is a personal account of making sense of loss, embracing emotion, and the cathartic qualities of mixed-media art relying greatly on family photographs. The findings from this will inform my teaching approach and assist budding artists (my pupils) in creating connections by breaking down walls to promote growth of their artistic voice.

The Feeling Of Being Ok, Benjamin B. Lee May 2017

The Feeling Of Being Ok, Benjamin B. Lee

Art and Design Theses

The Feeling of Being OK is an exhibition of appropriated imagery from unknown abandoned collections. Using the tension found in the enigmatic aspects of these materials, I investigate the fragility of the photograph and its capacity to fabricate memory and narrative. Designed to be a meditation on William Faulkner’s 1930 novel As I Lay Dying, this series focuses on themes including empathy and indifference, instability of identity, and life’s inevitable fate. By incorporating found materials such as vernacular objects and text into the installation, the potential for meaning is broadened. The work is installed in constellations or vignettes, allowing …

This paper explains at the intersection of Memory theory, Feminist Theory, Existential Psychology, Faith and Contemporary Art, I have found a way to embrace and integrate memories and experiences into my art and be a more fully integrated, emotionally healthy person living fully in the present moment. Looking Back: An Examination Of Family Archives, James E. Bentley Iii May 2011

Looking Back: An Examination Of Family Archives, James E. Bentley Iii

Art and Design Theses

With digital technology now dominating the film and photography industry, analog resources are becoming scarce. Simultaneously, memories preserved through personal family archives also are in danger of deterioration. Time, heat and humidity can cause film to decay just as the passage of time and the erosion of memory allows their contents to fade. In Looking Back, my family film and photography archives are exhumed and collectively examined by myself and my family. Reflecting upon this massive accumulation of imagery and their attached memories seems an endless task. However, as expressed in Looking Back, the greater the effort to …

Khwaam Jam : Memory, Keith Lee Crane Dec 2009

Khwaam Jam : Memory, Keith Lee Crane

Art and Design Theses

Khwaam Jam is an introspective installation of works that explore the perceptions of identity based on memory. Created through the exploration of my past and present, the works of Khwaam Jam utilize the principles and techniques of textile design and production while involving mixed media and new materials in a site-specific installation. This installation is intended to represent my memory on a large scale. The hanging pieces are the focal point of the exhibition and are the physical manifestation of my perception of the categorization and storage of my memories. Memories are the vessels through which we create our identity. …

Reflection: The Structure Of Memory, Etienne Jackson Apr 2009

Reflection: The Structure Of Memory, Etienne Jackson

Art and Design Theses

The research and body of work collected in this document address the relationship of my memories to specific physical visual forms. These representations form the basis of how the mind structures relationships between specific objects and memories. Through reflection associations are created that activate the mind to recall these memories via mnemonic visual references. These mnemonic references are objects of familiarity that create a concrete relationship between form and memory experiences.
