This essay attempts to use the philosophy of politics and history of George Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel to interpret a contemporary situation--the Vietnam War. The gradual involvement of America in Vietnam is illustrated by the use of Hegel's dialectic or logic. Internal problems and strife are put in perspective by Hegel's political philosophy. Problems arise because general theories must always ignore particulars in a concrete situation such as Vietnam. But Hegel's view of the world is generally applicable to the twentieth century.

The schedule is designed to provide the user with maximum ease of access to the materials contained in the collection and relieves the curriculum librarian of many of the clerical routines common to the processing of new materials. A New Test For Normality, Richard Leroy Roller

This paper presents a new test for normality which is based on a complete characterization of the normal distribution. Motivation for the test is given in terms of a proof of this characterization. The test is derived and evaluated by computer-simulated sampling from alternative distributions. The empirical powers of the test generated from such samplings are tabled and compared to nine commonly used tests. Evaluation of the proposed test is discussed and further avenues of investigation are suggested.

A Kinetic Study Pertaining To The Enzymatic Reduction Of Pyruvate By Lactate Dehydrogenase, Ronald Floyd Tienhaara

The reduction of pyruvate as catalyzed by lactate dehydrogenase has been studied by monitoring the oxidation of DPNH (diphosphopyridine nucleotide) at 340 nm. The kinetic investigation was carried out in phosphate buffer at 25° C. Since pyruvate exists in equilibrium with the enolized and hydrated forms, a kinetic analysis was devised to determine the nature of the true substrate for the enzymatic process. Also, a comparative study was made involving two isozymes of lactate dehydrogenase. The catalytic effectiveness of these isozymes was studied as a function of pH and substrate concentration.

This thesis presents a series of original jewelry and hand-held art objects which aesthetically relate to each other in a controlled gallery environment. The form of the objects is based on box-shapes, while the content comments on and pokes fun at our present society. The objects are made of various combinations of sterling silver, brass, copper, aluminum, plexiglass, fabric. and wood. Some of the objects use photographs from private and magazine sources. All of the objects are intended as Funk-art pieces.

This paper presents a series of ideas underlying the philosophy behind the creation of the author's works. The paper deals with the creator-viewer relationship, and the distinction that is commonly accepted as existing between the perception of the two, ascribing more value on the perception of one over that of the other. The conclusions were reached after acute observation of occurrences of everyday as a source of esthetic experience and after lengthy discussions with people involved in the creative process.

State-Dependent Learning As A Function Of The Temporal Relationship Between Noncontingent Footshock And Electroconvulsive Shock, T. Scott Shutt

Rats were given a noncontingent footshock followed at various intervals by electroconvulsive shock. Twentyfour hours later they were trained on a non-shock passive avoidance task and tested for retention 72 hours later. When the interval between NCFS and ECS was short the animals showed an amnesia which reduced as the interval was lengthened. An interval of .5 seconds produced the most pronounced amnesia and intervals greater than 10 seconds produced virtually no amnesia. The results were consistent with a state dependent retrieval failure hypothesis.

Relatively speaking, few studies have concerned themselves with the problem of frequent testing, and as Keys pointed out, empirical evidence, uncomplicated by differences in the amount of testing material employed, on the effects of frequent testing is, at best, scarce (14:427). Also many studies used tests and test results for direct instruction, thus introducing additional variables. Furthermore, the choice of subjects and disciplines has been limited, the better part being taken from college psychology and sociology classes or high school science classes. The boron trifluoride, tin (IV) fluoride and titanium (IV) fluoride complexes with 1,4-dioxane have been prepared and studied using infrared techniques. The compositions of the complexes have been determined and correspond to the 1:1 adducts in the case of the tin and titanium compounds. The boron trifluoride adduct is a 2:1 (acid:base) adduct. Infrared spectra in the region 1300 cm.-1 to 550 cm.-1 are given and the effects of coordination upon the ligand vibrations are described.

This study investigated the effect on test scores on the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Form A, resulting from convergent and divergent methods of teaching fifteen half-hour mini-lessons in social studies to fourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Results favored the Divergent Group, and their scores were more widely dispersed. Recommendations included a follow-up study, replication of the experiment with variations in the sample and treatments, and investigation of the possible utility of a two-score achievement test.

This paper presents an analysis of the forces of the "new imperialism" that led Italy to war with Turkey in 1911-1912. The interests of the Powers of Europe and America in the area of the Mediterranean Sea and North Africa are examined. The focal point is a resumé of the military aspects of the Tripolitan War. The concluding chapters deal with diplomatic reactions to Italy's conquest of Tripolitania and the judgment that Italy did not benefit from her imperial adventure.

This paper presents three definitions of orthogonality in normed spaces. Each definition is shown equivalent to the inner product being zero when restricted to an inner product space. The definitions arise from such properties in two space as the diagonals of a rectangle being equal and the Pythagorean Theorem. The third definition shows that the idea of an inner product can be generalized under certain conditions.

For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the classroom placement of "emotionally disturbed" children into special classes. The majority of public school districts offer two placements into their special classes: heterogenous or homogeneous grouping. Homogeneous grouping of these children seems to cause a "boomeranging" effect on reinforcement of their disruptive behavior. We have not always found our answer for helping emotionally disturbed children through heterogeneous grouping. Since emotionally disturbed children usually have the ability or an above average ability to learn, a heterogeneous grouping may not be academically stimulating. Each student was then asked to demonstrate, without the aid of instructions, operation of three machines selected by a laboratory assistant. This study of the behavior of Citellus townsendii townsendii was based on field observations of animals at their northern most distribution. The squirrels' seasonal activity and behavioral repertoire, when considered with environmental parameters, suggest important adaptations for survival. The animals were in torpor from about July to February. Activity generally occurred during the midmorning hours, allowing them to avoid temperature extremes. Quantitative analysis of behavioral observations indicated that most activities occurred in a non-random order.

In the present work the relative rates of iodination of pyruvic acid and ethyl and methyl pyruvate have been compared at 25.0° C. These studies allow the determination of the respective free energies of activation for these processes. Measurements have also been carried out at various temperatures to determine the enthalpies and entropies of activation for the spontaneous and base catalysed iodinations of these pyruvate systems.
