Unlocking The Power Of Multidimensional Literacy In A Language Arts Classroom: A Middle School Language Arts Curriculum, Andrew Raymond Kostelnik

A curriculum project that incorporates a multidimensional and multicultural point of view is created for a middle school language arts classroom in a rural community. Multiculturalism theories and underpinnings are examined and critically analyzed. Materials are identified and examined to determine the appropriateness in relation to the demographics and nature of the Kayman School District. Multiple sources and materials were established as a permanent curricular component to ensure an education that incorporates multiple perspectives and viewpoints.

Literature and activities which support and enhance language learning in the early childhood classroom were examined. Seventy-six pieces of literature were selected along with thirty-two supporting activities. These were all described and matched for easy reference by the classroom teacher. A discussion of the importance of literature for the early childhood classroom, particularly that in which Engli~h is taught as a second language, has been included.

A study guide, to increase students' ability to use study skills, to read expository and narrative material with greater fluency, and to maintain positive attitudes towards reading, was developed using Cooper and Petrosky's (1976) "A Psycholinguistic View of the Fluent Reading Process." Sequential lessons were designed from available printed materials. A pre/post test attitude scale, study habits survey, and standardized reading achievement tests were administered. Modified miscue analysis provided diagnostic information.

Purpose: The purpose of this series of lessons was to provide material for explaining how to do cloze exercises.

Materials: The riddles, sentences, and easier passages were written for this series. The more difficult passages and story were taken from reading materials.

Procedure: The riddles were left intact. The sentences and shorter passages had no special deletion pattern. The more difficult passages had nouns deleted. The story had an every fifth word deletion pattern.
