Parenting Practices And Desire For A Child Among Mothers Living With Hiv, Natalie De La Cruz Jan 2009

Parenting Practices And Desire For A Child Among Mothers Living With Hiv, Natalie De La Cruz

All ETDs from UAB

One-quarter of adults living with HIV/AIDS in the US are women, most of whom are facing decisions regarding their reproductive future. Despite clear challenges and complexities facing HIV-positive women, most research suggests that they maintain strong desires and intentions for motherhood. This research explores the correlates of desire for another child, with a specific emphasis on examining the relationship between current parenting experiences and future childbearing desires, among a predominantly black sample of HIV-positive women (n=96) participating in the Making Our Mothers Stronger (MOMS) Project. Predictors of contraceptive use and consistency between contraceptive practices and fertility desires are also explored …

Marginal Zone B-Cell Precursors As Cellular Agents For Type I Ifn Promoted Antigen Transport, John Hsien Wang Jan 2009

Marginal Zone B-Cell Precursors As Cellular Agents For Type I Ifn Promoted Antigen Transport, John Hsien Wang

All ETDs from UAB

Type I IFN is a known pro-inflammatory cytokine that is associated with the development of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). At the level of B-cell regulation, current literature primarily attributes the formation of autoantibodies at the post-germinal center stage when type I IFN is known to promote plasmablast differentiation. However, our findings here point to a type I IFN effect at the pre-germinal stage. Type I IFN promotes T-dependent antibody response, activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) expression, germinal center formation, all of which are processes before the onset of plasmablast differentiation. We have determined a subset of splenic transitional B-cells, that is …

All ETDs from UAB

THE "WRITE" TOOLS: THE IMPACT OF TEACHERS' SELF-EFFICACY ON CLASSROOM WRITING INSTRUCTION JUDY RAMONA RAPP EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION ABSTRACT While teaching self-efficacy has been supported as an important construct related to teacher competence (Goddard, R. D., Hoy, W. K., & Hoy, A. W. American Education Research Journal, 37, 479-507), little is known about how teachers think of themselves as writers, particularly as it relates to their writing instruction. This study supports the developing notion that writing self-efficacy is an important element in understanding how it is that teachers think about their own writing. It also serves to operationalize the construct …

Parenting Behaviors And Adolescent Obesity, Kathy Lynne Newman

All ETDs from UAB

PARENTING BEHAVIORS AND EARLY ADOLESCENT OBESITY KATHY NEWMAN SCHOOL OF NURSING ABSTRACT The incidence of adolescent obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years with the rate increasing from 5% to 17%. Approximately 17.0% of adolescents in the United States are obese with 4% being categorized as morbidly obese. Obesity disproportionately affects minority adolescent groups. Previous studies have examined relationships between parental behaviors and adolescent health risk behaviors, but few studies have compared these relationships across different racial/ethnic groups. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between parental nurturance, parental involvement, family cohesion, and early …

The Effect Of Zinc On Cytokine Release And Signal Transduction In Airway Epithelial Cells, Nai-Lin Cheng Jan 2009

The Effect Of Zinc On Cytokine Release And Signal Transduction In Airway Epithelial Cells, Nai-Lin Cheng

All ETDs from UAB

Zinc is an essential cation for life that is involved in numerous physiology and pathophysiology processes. Despite its wide use as a cytoprotective agent in medications, its cellular and molecular mechanisms of action have not been well established. In order to define the potential therapeutic benefit of zinc, I used several Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and non-CF human airway epithelial cell lines as models in my studies. Extracellular zinc caused release calcium from the endoplasmic reticulum though zinc-sensitive Gq-coupled receptor(s) that may subsequently modulate ion channels. In addition, zinc also exhibited anti-inflammatory effects. Zinc inhibited pro-inflammatory molecular TNFα-induced cytokine and chemokine …

The Effects Of Naturally-Occurring Fatigue And Task Difficulty On Effort Related Cardiovascular Response, Jason Lagory Jan 2009

The Effects Of Naturally-Occurring Fatigue And Task Difficulty On Effort Related Cardiovascular Response, Jason Lagory

All ETDs from UAB

Wright's integrative analysis suggests that effort can be measured via cardiovascular (CV) response. In addition, the analysis breaks with tradition in suggesting that effort varies not with benefit alone, but also with the difficulty of the behavioral challenge at hand. Recent research has focused upon the effects of fatigue on effort related CV response, assuming that fatigue negatively affects perceived ability. Results have supported interactional predictions. Specifically, they have indicated higher levels of CV response among high- as compared to low fatigue participants when tasks were possible and worthwhile and the reverse response pattern when tasks were excessively difficult (given …

Shunt Failure In Children With Hydrocephalus: Impact Of Sociodemographic Predictors On Time To Medical Evaluation For Shunt Failure And The Economic Burden Associated With Shunt Failure, Chevis Nacole Shannon Jan 2009

Shunt Failure In Children With Hydrocephalus: Impact Of Sociodemographic Predictors On Time To Medical Evaluation For Shunt Failure And The Economic Burden Associated With Shunt Failure, Chevis Nacole Shannon

All ETDs from UAB

Ventriculo-peritoneal shunts continue to be the standard surgical procedure for treating children diagnosed with hydrocephalus, regardless of etiology. The failure of these shunts can cause acute medical problems for the child requiring immediate medical care. It is known that hydrocephalus directly impacts a child's health status, educational abilities, developmental opportunities and emotional well being. An important gap in the current literature is the examination in a homogenous patient population of the impact of sociodemographic factors on the management of shunt failure and the economic burden on the family. The objective of this dissertation research study was to better understand shunt …

Identification Of New Strategies For The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme Utilizing A Pharmacogenomic Approach: Genetic Profiles Associated With Patient Prognosis And Outcome To Capecitabine Treatment, Jessica Marie Grunda

All ETDs from UAB

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most lethal form of primary brain neoplasm with average patient survival between 9 and 15 months even with the most aggressive treatment modalities. Unfortunately, this poor outcome has not appreciably changed in the past 50 years emphasizing the lack of traditional `trial and error' methods in identifying an efficacious treatment for GBM. Pharmacogenomics is greatly impacting cancer research through the development of personalized medicine and rationally designed treatment paradigms for the development of more efficacious and less toxic treatment modalities. The main objective of this research was to utilize a pharmacogenomic approach to identify new …

Mouse Modeling Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (Pdac); Search For Early Diagnostic Markers And Therapeutic Targets, Kyoko Kojima Jan 2009

Mouse Modeling Of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (Pdac); Search For Early Diagnostic Markers And Therapeutic Targets, Kyoko Kojima

All ETDs from UAB

PDAC is a highly malignant neoplasm that carries a very poor prognosis. PDAC development is a multistage transformation process that involves multiple genetic alterations that include activation of EGFR/HER2 and KRAS, and loss-of-function mutations in INK4A/ARF, p53 and SMAD4. In recent years, several genetically engineered mouse models that accurately recapitulate human pancreatic neoplasia have been developed. Histological characterizations of those models have revealed possible roles for the mutated RAS, INK4a/ARF and p53 in pancreatic tumorigenesis. However, the role of SMAD4 mutation, which is associated with late stages of tumor progression, has yet to be explored. Additionally, those models that would …

Edgar Degas's Fan-Shaped Designs: Art, Decoration, And The Modern Woman In Late-Nineteenth-Century France, Alicia Mccaghren Cook Jan 2009

Edgar Degas's Fan-Shaped Designs: Art, Decoration, And The Modern Woman In Late-Nineteenth-Century France, Alicia Mccaghren Cook

All ETDs from UAB

French modernist Edgar Degas is one of the most well-known artists of the nineteenth century and his ballet paintings are among the most identifiable works in the history of art. However, surprisingly little scholarship exists on the twentyfive mixed-media fan-shaped designs he created sporadically throughout his career. This thesis focuses on the circumstantial factors surrounding the fans’ creation, in particular the mid-nineteenth-century Japonisme craze, the connotations of the fan as an historical item, and the intersection of commodity, fashion, and gender. Degas created nineteen of the twenty-five fans from 1878-1879 for the Fourth Impressionist Exhibit. This dazzling and sumptuous group …

Factors Affecting Young Adults' Opinions About Hospice And Home Death, Nicole Marie Webb Jan 2009

Factors Affecting Young Adults' Opinions About Hospice And Home Death, Nicole Marie Webb

All ETDs from UAB

An aging population and increased prevalence of chronic illness will demand greater in-volvement by young adults with respect to end-of-life care decisions, and little research has examined opinions about end-of-life care among this population. Exploration of fac-tors influencing opinions about hospice and home death is necessary in order to address potential barriers to available care options and, thus, to improved quality of care at the end of life. The present study first examined a sample of 1035 Caucasian or African American introductory psychology students in order to explore factors affecting opinions about hospice and home death. A subsample of 250 …

Effects Of Daily Versus 30-Day Continuous Contact Lens Wear On Tear Cytokine Levels, Lucy Ebunoluwa Kehinde

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if 30 days of continuous contact lens wear produces a different ocular inflammatory response compared to 30 days of daily wear of Bausch & Lomb® PureVisionTM silicone hydrogel contact lenses. Eighty-five individuals wore these lenses for 30 days continuously in one eye and daily in the contralateral eye. Relative concentrations of 27 cytokines were measured in tear samples collected from the subjects using cytometric bead-based assays. Clinical tests were also conducted to correlate changes in cytokine levels to changes in clinical profiles. This study contributes to a greater understanding of the impact …

Impact Of Genetic And Epigenetic Variability In Response To Two Test Drugs 5-Fluorouracil And Lansoprazole, Adam Michael Lee Jan 2009

Impact Of Genetic And Epigenetic Variability In Response To Two Test Drugs 5-Fluorouracil And Lansoprazole, Adam Michael Lee

All ETDs from UAB

Pharmacogenetics has proven to be an invaluable tool in predicting variability in drug response; however, there are numerous incidences where genetics cannot fully explain interindividual drug variability. Other factors, such as the epigenetic mechanism of DNA methylation, may offer an alternate explanation. Therefore, this dissertation focuses on both genetic and epigenetic regulation in order to gain a better understanding of the molecular basis behind drug response variability. Initial investigations focused on the antineoplastic agent 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU), which can produce severe toxicity in patients with deficiency in dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD). Genotypic studies have identified >32 sequence variants in the DPYD gene; …
