Analysis Of Algorithms For Online Routing And Scheduling In Networks, Jessen Tait Havill Jan 1998

Analysis Of Algorithms For Online Routing And Scheduling In Networks, Jessen Tait Havill

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

We study situations in which an algorithm must make decisions about how to best route and schedule data transfer requests in a communication network before each transfer leaves its source. For some situations, such as those requiring quality of service guarantees, this is essential. For other situations, doing work in advance can simplify decisions in transit and increase the speed of the network. In order to reflect realistic scenarios, we require that our algorithms be online, or make their decisions without knowing future requests. We measure the efficiency of an online algorithm by its competitive ratio, which is the maximum …

Designing Carolina: The Construction Of An Early American Social And Geographical Landscape, 1670-1719, Meaghan N. Duff

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This study explores the promotion, population and settlement of the Carolina lowcountry and evaluates the colony's pioneer years, the period before an English-dominated plantation society achieved supremacy. Many designers participated in the construction of proprietary South Carolina's social and geographical landscapes. The explorers and propagandists who first characterized the colony for European audiences developed the region in the minds of potential emigrants. their recruitment campaigns determined in part the people who colonized the province. The Lords Proprietors and their agents, who devised an elaborate settlement program set forth in the Fundamental Constitutions and other land policies, influenced how Carolina evolved …

First Observation Of The Very Rare Decay Neutral Kaon(Long) Going To Electron Positron, Robert David Martin Iii Jan 1998

First Observation Of The Very Rare Decay Neutral Kaon(Long) Going To Electron Positron, Robert David Martin Iii

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS Experiment 871 (E871) has carried out a search for the very rare, GIM and helicity suppressed decay of the long-lived neutral kaon into an electron-positron pair. This decay is predicted within the Standard Model to occur with a branching ratio of {dollar}(9.0 \pm 0.4)\times 10\sp{lcub}-12{rcub}.{dollar} Data were taken during the 1995 and 1996 AGS HEP running periods on the B5 beamline. A signal of (4 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 2) {dollar}K\sbsp{lcub}L{rcub}{lcub}0{rcub} \to e\sp+e\sp-{dollar} events is seen with a physics background expectation of 0.2 events. The ratio of the partial decay widths {dollar}\Gamma(K\sbsp{lcub}L{rcub}{lcub}0{rcub} \to e\sp+e\sp-)/\Gamma(K\sbsp{lcub}L{rcub}{lcub}0{rcub}\to\mu\sp+\mu\sp-){dollar} is determined to be {dollar}(1.3\sbsp{lcub}-0.6{rcub}{lcub}+0.8{rcub} …

Searches For Exotic Matter, David Lee Morgan Jan 1998

Searches For Exotic Matter, David Lee Morgan

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This research encompasses two quite distinct searches for exotic matter. The first half concerns exotic matter on the scale of elementary particles. In this chapter, I consider the production of gluinos, the supersymmetric partner of the gluon, in models where the gluino is very light. Cross sections are calculated for electroproduction and hadroproduction of gluinos and the results indicate that existing accelerators are capable of probing the region of gluino masses between 1.0 and 2.0GeV with lifetimes between 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}-10{rcub}{dollar} and 10{dollar}\sp{lcub}-6{rcub}{dollar} seconds. Such experiments could find a light gluino if it exists, or to close this unexplored mass-lifetime window. The …

From Within The Frame: Storytelling In African-American Fiction, Bertram Duane Ashe Jan 1998

From Within The Frame: Storytelling In African-American Fiction, Bertram Duane Ashe

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of this study is to explore the written representation of African-American spoken-voice storytelling in five fictional narratives published between the late nineteenth century and the late twentieth century: Charles W. Chesnutt's "Hot-Foot Hannibal," Zora Neale Hurston's their Eyes Were Watching God, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, Toni Cade Bambara's "My Man Bovanne," and John Edgar Wideman's "Doc's Story.".;Using Walter Ong's suggestion that the relationship between storyteller and inside-the-text listener mirrors the hoped-for relationship between writer and readership, this study examines the way these writers grappled with these factors as they generated their texts.;By paying attention to the teller/listener-writer/readership relationship, …

Electroproduction Of The S(11)Meson(1535) Resonance At High Momentum Transfer, Christopher Stephen Armstrong Jan 1998

Electroproduction Of The S(11)Meson(1535) Resonance At High Momentum Transfer, Christopher Stephen Armstrong

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The amplitude of the $S\sb{11}$(1535) resonance at values of four-momentum transfer $Q\sp2 > 0$ is not explained by the nonrelativistic constituent quark model, and is currently a topic of theoretical interest; in addition, the large branching fraction of this resonance to the proton-$\eta$ decay channel is not well understood. There is also controversy concerning the $Q\sp2$ regime in which perturbative QCD becomes important in describing nucleon resonances such as the $S\sb{11}$. The $p(e, e\sp\prime p)\eta$ reaction is an excellent system in which to study this resonance and address the issue of possible perturbative effects: the $p\eta$ channel is not accessible to …

"Struck In Their Hearts": David Zeisberger's Moravian Mission To The Delaware Indians In Ohio, 1767-1808, Maia Turner Conrad

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In 1767 David Zeisberger began his Moravian mission to the Delaware Indians in Ohio. He led this mission until his death in 1808. While Zeisberger and his assistants required conformity in matters religious, the converts did not have to make enormous changes in their traditional beliefs. The Delaware converts also did not have to alter their traditional economic, medical, housing, and diplomatic practices.;The goal of this study is to understand why hundreds of Delawares chose to convert, and why as many more chose to live at the mission. Many Delawares hoped to return to the peaceful life they had previously …

On The Front Lines Of Freedom: Black And White Women Shape Emancipation In Virginia, 1861-1890, Antoinette G. Van Zelm

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Black and white women in Virginia were on the front lines of the struggle over emancipation during and after the Civil War. Between 1861 and 1890, both former slave and former slaveholding women shaped black freedom and thereby re-invented themselves as citizens within their local communities.;Focusing on women who lived in the southeastern and south-central regions of Virginia, this study expands the narrative of Southern history to encompass the vigorous contest between black and white women over the meanings of slavery, the war, and freedom. Based on federal records and private papers, this dissertation assesses women's ideas about the end …

Charlatans, Embezzlers, And Murderers: Revolution Comes To Virginia, 1765-1775, William E. White

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

In 1774 Virginia's last Royal Governor, Lord Dunmore, predicted that the social tensions in Virginia society would end the fomenting rebellion. For a decade the gentry had contended with a series of scandals that diminished their standing as the social, political and moral leaders of the colony. Three scandals, in particular, heightened freeholder scrutiny of Virginia leaders.;Richard Henry Lee quickly stepped to the forefront in 1765 and became the popular leader of the Stamp Act resistance. The revelation that he had applied for the position of Stamp Collector shocked many. He appeared as a self-interested charlatan. Then, in 1766, Speaker …

The Vice Presidency Of Richard M Nixon: One Man's Quest For National Respect, An International Reputation, And The Presidency, Benjamin Joel Goldberg

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Richard M. Nixon served as Vice President under Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1961. During this time, he worked to portray himself to the public as an international affairs expert and integral advisor within the Administration. Drawing on experiences as a Congressman and his close relationship with John Foster Dulles, Nixon made every effort to gain a meaningful advisory and decision-making role. His actual success was limited. The Vice President was motivated by his love of international affairs, desire for respect and vision of his position as a possible jump off point to the presidency in 1960. This last …

A Search For Lepton Flavor Violation In The Neutral Kaon System, Christopher Henry Hoff Jan 1998

A Search For Lepton Flavor Violation In The Neutral Kaon System, Christopher Henry Hoff

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The conservation of separate lepton number is an ad hoc conservation principle in the Standard Model but several non-Standard Model theories allow violation of separate lepton number conservation. A very sensitive search for lepton flavor violation in the neutral kaon system, via the decay K0L→me , was undertaken by Brookhaven National Laboratory Experiment 871 (E871) during the 1995 and 1996 AGS HEP running periods. No K0L→me decays were observed and a single event sensitivity (SES) of 1.97x10-12 was achieved. This single event sensitivity corresponds to an upper limit on the branching fraction of BK0L→m e<4.53+/-0.21+/-0.46x 10-12 at a 90% confidence level.

Improvements To The Color Quantization Process, Rance David Necaise Jan 1998

Improvements To The Color Quantization Process, Rance David Necaise

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The presentation of color images on devices with limited color capabilities requires a reduction in the number of colors contained in the images. Color image quantization is the process of reducing the number of colors used in an image while maintaining its appearance as much as possible. This reduction is performed using a color image quantization algorithm. The quantization algorithm attempts to select k colors that best represent the contents of the image. The original image is then recolored using the representative colors. to improve the resulting image, a dithering process can be used in place of the recoloring.;This dissertation …

"I Feel Quite Independent Now": The Life Of Mary Greenhow Lee, Sheila R. Phipps Jan 1998

"I Feel Quite Independent Now": The Life Of Mary Greenhow Lee, Sheila R. Phipps

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

This biography of Mary Greenhow Lee of Virginia examines life in the nineteenth century. Born in Richmond in 1819, Lee married a lawyer of modest means in Winchester, became widowed thirteen years later, lived through the Civil War in a border town coveted by both armies, then finally settled in Baltimore where she ran a boarding house to make a living until her death in 1907. The purpose of this study is to use a single personality from the past to examine life in the nineteenth-century South from a woman's perspective, using historic events as a backdrop to the narrative.;Mary …
