Sternberg’S Transformational And Transactional Giftedness: A Dabrowskian Interpretation, Salvatore Mendaglio
Sternberg’S Transformational And Transactional Giftedness: A Dabrowskian Interpretation, Salvatore Mendaglio
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
Sternberg’s (2020) transformational and transactional giftedness are based on a theory of leadership. Transformational leaders are highly moral, make changes that benefit members and society. They are concerned with members’ well-being and development. Transactional leaders are motivated by self-interest, concerned with members’ compliance with expectations and standards. Qualities of these forms are applied to giftedness, yielding transformational and transactional giftedness. Sternberg’s presentation and a review of leadership literature were examined from the perspective of Dabrowski’s theory of positive disintegration. It is concluded that they resonate well with Dabrowski’s theory. The current article suggests that Sternberg’s transactional and transformational giftedness resemble …
The Pursuit Of Eriksonian Fidelity In Education For The Gifted: A Literature Review Exploring Its Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Determinants, Anyesha Mishra
The Pursuit Of Eriksonian Fidelity In Education For The Gifted: A Literature Review Exploring Its Interpersonal And Intrapersonal Determinants, Anyesha Mishra
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
This review of literature introduces Erikson’s psychosocial theory in relation to identity development and fidelity. It explores the intrapersonal and interpersonal determinants of fidelity and identity development as described by Erikson, with a specific focus on the role of schools and the challenges faced by students with gifts and talents (SWGT). It explores the unique challenges faced by SWGT in their identity development journey, such as boredom, underachievement, and social isolation. The social aspects of identity construction and the influence of educational institutions on students’ identity development have been highlighted. It emphasizes the significance of creating a supportive learning environment …
Relationships Among Ethnic Identity, School Attitudes, General School Self-Concept, And Academic Achievement Of African American And Hispanic Gifted Students From Low-Income Families, Mihyeon Kim
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
Ethnic identity is a reflection of an individual’s own ethnic group membership and interaction with members of other groups. This study examined the relationship between students’ ethnicity, general school self-concept, school attitudes, and academic performance measured by self-reported responses. The sample was made of low-income, high-ability African American and Hispanic 7th and 8th grade students, N = 186, that participated in a residential summer academic program. A path model was proposed with four components to measure academic achievement: ethnic identity, school attitudes, general school self-concept, and self-reported GPA. The path analysis model explained 11% of the variance in …
Basic Psychological Needs, Socioeconomic Status, And Well-Being Of Undergraduate Honors And Non-Honors Students, Rebecca M. Johnson, Rachel Mun, Jaret Hodges, Anne Rinn
Basic Psychological Needs, Socioeconomic Status, And Well-Being Of Undergraduate Honors And Non-Honors Students, Rebecca M. Johnson, Rachel Mun, Jaret Hodges, Anne Rinn
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
Basic psychological needs, socioeconomic status and involvement in honors programs may impact well-being of undergraduate students. This exploratory study examines these factors and uses Self-Determination Theory as a lens to interpret the effect on well-being of undergraduate honors and non-honors students. Self-Determination Theory is a macro theory of motivation and personality development that relates to individuals’ need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, and addresses the social-emotional and cognitive components needed to ensure individuals’ well-being. In this study, researchers examined the relationship among basic psychological needs, socioeconomic status, honors participation, and well-being of 252 undergraduates. Results of a …

Gifted And Lgbtq: A Review Of The Literature, Orla Dunne
Gifted And Lgbtq: A Review Of The Literature, Orla Dunne
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
The present review examines research with gifted LGBTQ individuals. This article will focus on the first research with gifted LGBTQ individuals before leaping forward in time to several recent studies, each of which has significantly contributed to a field lacking in empirical research. Overall themes will then be discussed. I suggest that research in this area has notably advanced, in parallel with shifts in legislation, culture and attitudes toward LGBTQ people. Increased focus on aspects of diversity in gifted learners and gifted education have also contributed to this expanding field of research. Future research attention is nevertheless necessary, in order …
A Counselor Educator Situates Two Seminal Studies In The Cultural Values And Underrepresentation Literature 30 Years Later, Jean P. Peterson
A Counselor Educator Situates Two Seminal Studies In The Cultural Values And Underrepresentation Literature 30 Years Later, Jean P. Peterson
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
Emerging themes in an interview-based qualitative study of dominant-culture teachers’ beliefs about giftedness in the late 1900s reflected that behavior, verbal assertiveness, family status, a strong work ethic, and social skills mattered most. In a similar study in five culturally and linguistic diverse (CLD) communities at that time, themes differed from community to community, and collectively from the teachers'. Findings are pertinent to the underrepresentation of CLD students in gifted-education programs currently because teachers continue to be gatekeepers when asked to refer students for programs and what they value matters. The research approach is also of interest. The methods used …

Parents’ Perceptions Of Children’S Psychosocial Adaptation During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Québec: Comparison With Gifted And Non-Gifted Children, Claire Baudry, Jeanne Leblanc-Lagacé, Line Massé, Jessica Pearson, Amélie Courtinat, Eileen Slater, Geneviève Ouellet
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
Studies conducted in French Canadian schools following the COVID-19 lockdown report that children in a pandemic might have difficulties adapting. Gifted and twice-exceptional children—who might present special needs in this situation—could have different levels of psychosocial adaptation and mental-health needs than other children. This study assessed the psychosocial adaptation of gifted and twice-exceptional children and compared the adaptation levels of these individuals to those of non-identified gifted children. The results show that 62.5% of the gifted children had generally coped well with pandemic conditions, as did the non-identified gifted children (73.9%). Conversely, 59.5% of twice-exceptional children presented difficulties in adapting …

Profiles Of Temperament And Perfectionism In High Ability College Students, Kathryn L. Fletcher, Kristie L. Speirs Neumeister, W. Holmes Finch, Tracy Cross
SENG Journal: Exploring the Psychology of Giftedness
Different physical, mental, and motivational outcomes for perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns indicate that individuals have different experiences of perfectionism. Although research has focused on parenting practices as a factor related to these differences, little research has examined the impact of temperamental differences on perfectionism. In the current study, 434 high ability undergraduate students completed perfectionism, adult temperament, and personality measures. Latent class analysis that examined the patterns among the relationships between self-oriented perfectionism, socially prescribed perfectionism, and four dimensions of adult temperament (negative affect, effortful control, extraversion, orienting sensitivity) revealed three distinct subgroups. Although the largest subgroup demonstrated patterns …
