Pandemic Profiles: Annabelle Brown And The Wisdom Of Gardening Resilience, Karen Romero
COVID-19 @ Whittier (full list of items)
As I begin talking to Annabelle Brown on what could be any forgettable October morning, she instantly reminds me of the girls I grew up with in Southern California: warm, accepting, and distinctly in touch with their own version of cool. Even through the socially strained and limited setting of zoom, Brown radiates an effortlessly kind and comfortable personality that feels familiar and genuine. This familiarity isn’t unfounded. Brown grew up on a farm in Walnut, California, a neighboring city of where I was raised.

Chelo Ferschweiler’s bedroom walls are painted bright blue and have sticky notes haphazardly attached to them. When we spoke over Zoom, the small yellow squares caught my attention because I also keep sticky notes on my wall that contain ideas for stories and poems. I asked Ferschweiler what she’s written and she told me she jots down ideas that inspire her to write creatively. My ears perk at the mention of our shared passion — creative writing.

Sage Amdahl is facing the same issues as any other college freshman. At 18 years old, she is supposed to be figuring out her life. What should she study? What kind of profession does she want to go into? So far, she is interested in writing and politics and wants to try to figure something out with that, but is not quite sure exactly what that may be. Now is also the time to reevaluate her relationships to her friends and to herself. That is a tall order, but one that young adults are expected to navigate all the time.

Pandemic Profiles: Matt Yanuck, Renaissance Man Of The New Zeration, Lakotah Battle
COVID-19 @ Whittier (full list of items)
When speaking with California native, Matt Yanuck, you immediately feel noticed and that you matter. His ability to understand and read his surroundings is stealth-like. This self-aware, 21-year-old Philosophy major completing his senior year at Whittier College is no stranger to adaptation and taking hold of the reins as he consciously creates his desired reality. Yanuck possesses an essential trait somewhat lacking in our current civic culture:an unabashed need to speak the truth. “When the pandemic hit, it was just another time to be self-reliant and have even more work ethic,” Yanuck says with conviction.
