Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Amidst the economic, political, and social turmoil caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, contrasting responses to government mandated and recommended mitigation strategies have posed many challenges for governments as they seek to persuade individuals to adhere to prevention guidelines. Much research has subsequently examined the tendency of individuals to either follow (or not) such guidelines, and yet a ‘grey area’ also exists wherein many rules are subject to individual interpretation. In a large study of Canadians (N =1032, Mage =34.39, 52% female; collected April 6, 2020), we examine how social dominance orientation (SDO) as an individual difference predicts individual propensity to …

Respiratory illness and diseases are ranked five out of the thirty most common causes of death worldwide. Thus, the use of a ventilator becomes a must for assisting patients suffering from respiratory disorders. The COVID-19 outbreak has aggravated the situation. Difficulty breathing is one of the most common symptoms of COVID. Out of 20% symptomatic COVID patients that require hospitalization, about 5% ended up in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit), most of them requiring ventilation. The world saw a scarcity of ventilators when COVID was at its first peak, with manually ventilating patients using an ambu bag being the only …

Therapeutic Potential Of Annexins In Sepsis And Covid-19, Louise Mui, Claudio M. Martin, Brent J. Tschirhart, Qingping Feng

Paediatrics Publications

Sepsis is a continuing problem in modern healthcare, with a relatively high prevalence, and a significant mortality rate worldwide. Currently, no specific anti-sepsis treatment exists despite decades of research on developing potential therapies. Annexins are molecules that show efficacy in preclinical models of sepsis but have not been investigated as a potential therapy in patients with sepsis. Human annexins play important roles in cell membrane dynamics, as well as mediation of systemic effects. Most notably, annexins are highly involved in anti-inflammatory processes, adaptive immunity, modulation of coagulation and fibrinolysis, as well as protective shielding of cells from phagocytosis. These discoveries …

Bail In The Time Of Covid-19, Thomas A. Stinson

Master of Laws Research Papers Repository

The COVID-19 pandemic that began in early 2020 resulted in changes to both the form and content of bail hearings and reviews within Ontario. While the statutory framework contained within sections 515, 520, 525 and 679 of the Criminal Code remained unchanged, practical changes were necessary in order to allow bail matters to occur virtually and safely. Initially, the existence of COVID-19 may have allowed for the release of some accused persons who would not have been let out on bail prior to the pandemic. By early 2021, bail courts appear to have settled into a pattern where the COVID-19 …

Introduction Given the recurrent risk of respiratory illness-based pandemics, and the important roles family physicians play during public health emergencies, the development of pandemic plans for primary care is imperative. Existing pandemic plans in Canada, however, do not adequately incorporate family physicians' roles and perspectives. This policy and planning oversight has become increasingly evident with the emergence of the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19, pandemic. This study is designed to inform the development of pandemic plans for primary care through evidence from four provinces in Canada: British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. Methods and analysis We will employ …
