Total Synthesis Of (+/-)-Goniomitine Via A Formal Nitrile/Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropane [3 + 2] Cyclization., Christian L Morales, Brian L Pagenkopf

Chemistry Publications

The total synthesis of (+/-)-goniomitine has been accomplished in 17 linear steps with 5.2% overall yield starting from commercially available delta-valerolactam. A synthetic highlight includes the first application of a formal [3 + 2] cycloaddition between a highly functionalized nitrile and a donor-acceptor cyclopropane to prepare an indole nucleus. The use of a microwave reactor is shown to greatly improve the reaction times for two steps.

How On Earth Can We Live Together? In Search Of The Common Sense, N.A. Dec 2007

How On Earth Can We Live Together? In Search Of The Common Sense, N.A.

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Beginning on June 26, 2008 the Tällberg Forum will gather leaders and thinkers from seventy nations for four days of conversations and workshops related to the opportunities and chal- lenges of global interdependence. Tällberg conversations have increasingly focused on the sys- tems problems emerging from the growing imbalance between nature and human activity. Can we design, govern and manage the sustainable interaction between natural systems and the systems of human activity? Can we negotiate among ourselves the resolution of the planetary crisis? Can we find better ways to integrate the work of governments and institutions with the actions of other …

Aboriginal And Non—Aboriginal Australia: The Dilemma Of Apologies, Forgiveness, And Reconciliation, David Mellor, Di Bretherton, Lucy Firth

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This article presents a qualitative study of the indigenous Australian perspective on reconciliation with nonindigenous Australia, with a focus on the role of an apology for the oppression and violence perpetrated by nonindigenous Australians, and for- giveness on the part of indigenous Australians. A brief historical analysis of the rela- tionship between Aborigines and waves of settlers is presented to demonstrate the ex- tent of the wrong that was perpetrated against Aborigines and the need for social as well as practical reconciliation in the current context. It is argued that negotiated for- giveness is a concept that is pertinent to …

What Makes For Effective Labor Representation On Pension Boards?, Johanna Weststar, Anil Verma Dec 2007

What Makes For Effective Labor Representation On Pension Boards?, Johanna Weststar, Anil Verma

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

This article examines the efficacy of labor representation on pension boards. Using existing literature and interviews with labor trustees, this article develops a model where a more formal approach to recruitment and selection, skill acquisition, and accountability is hypothesized to aid labor trustees in achieving effective integration and representation on pension boards. Data indicate that labor trustees are placed in a challenging environment with insufficient support from their union, other trustees, or the board. These findings have important implications for the selection, training, and integration of labor trustees and the success of a labor agenda on pension issues.

The Stem Cell Debate Continues: The Buying And Selling Of Eggs For Research, Françoise Baylis, Carolyn Mcleod Dec 2007

The Stem Cell Debate Continues: The Buying And Selling Of Eggs For Research, Françoise Baylis, Carolyn Mcleod

Philosophy Publications

Now that stem cell scientists are clamouring for human eggs for cloning-based stem cell research, there is vigorous debate about the ethics of paying women for their eggs. Generally speaking, some claim that women should be paid a fair wage for their reproductive labour or tissues, while others argue against the further commodification of reproductive labour or tissues and worry about voluntariness among potential egg providers. Siding mainly with those who believe that women should be financially compensated for providing eggs for research, the new stem cell guidelines of the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) legitimise both reimbursement …

Presidential Address The Ideological And Economic Repositioning Of Universities, Allan Pitman Dec 2007

Presidential Address The Ideological And Economic Repositioning Of Universities, Allan Pitman

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

A reconceptualization of the human capital value of education as a private good, linked to a market oriented commodification of university knowledge, underpins a repositioning of universities as entrepreneurial enterprises. The implications for universities and the professoriate are explored, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which the institutions and work within them are being redefined. Canadian and Australian experiences are drawn upon.

Une nouvelle conceptualisation de la valeur du capital humain en enseignement comme un bien privé, relié au savoir universitaire comme des marchandises destinées au marché, étaie une repositionnement des universités comme des entreprises commerciales. L'auteur explore …

Comparative Education In Canadian Universities, Marianne Larsen, Suzanne Majhanovich, Vandra Masemann

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

The first section of this article provides a brief overview of the field in Canada, and in so doing, demonstrates the broad nature of Comparative Education within the Canadian context. The second section of this article provides an overview of the comparative and international education programmes, specialization areas and courses in Canadian higher education institutions, focusing on three stages in the history of Comparative Education in Canada: the 1950s-1970s (Establishment of Comparative Education); the 1980s -1990s (Fragmentation of Comparative Education); and the 2000s (Broadening Comparative Education). While the focus in this article is on Comparative Education in graduate university programmes, …

Educational Institutions Negotiating Democracy And Social Justice: The (Im)Balance Of Power And Accountability, Paul R. Carr, Gina Thésée Dec 2007

Educational Institutions Negotiating Democracy And Social Justice: The (Im)Balance Of Power And Accountability, Paul R. Carr, Gina Thésée

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Democracy and education are considered to be mutually reinforcing, yet it is unclear how democracy is achieved in/through education. At a time when educational systems and governments rhetorically advocate for greater accountability for academic achievement, there seems to be less emphasis placed on the area of social justice for students. The capacity of the institutional culture of an entire educational system of a jurisdiction (the provincial/state level, school boards and schools) to support and achieve a high level of critical democracy has not been the focus of extensive research. For the purposes of this paper, democratic education is considered to …

Emerging Youth Transition Patterns In Canada: Opportunities And Risks, Roderic Beaujot, Don Kerr Dec 2007

Emerging Youth Transition Patterns In Canada: Opportunities And Risks, Roderic Beaujot, Don Kerr

PSC Discussion Papers Series

Building on a Government of Canada sponsored seminar on Canadian and international perspectives on youth policy and research, the Policy Research Initiative (2006) has highlighted a resurgence of interest among researchers on the risks, opportunities and challenges that many young people face across industrialized countries. Various social, demographic and economic changes have altered the life experience of the young, which has modified the opportunities and risks encountered in navigating into adult roles.

The objective of this study is to largely describe some of the most salient of these changes, with a careful review of existing Canadian literature and published empirical …

Adaptive Radiotherapy Planning On Decreasing Gross Tumor Volumes As Seen On Megavoltage Computed Tomography Images., Curtis Woodford, Slav Yartsev, R. Dar, Glenn Bauman, Jacob Van Dyk

Oncology Publications

PURPOSE: To evaluate gross tumor volume (GTV) changes for patients with non-small-cell lung cancer by using daily megavoltage (MV) computed tomography (CT) studies acquired before each treatment fraction on helical tomotherapy and to relate the potential benefit of adaptive image-guided radiotherapy to changes in GTV.

METHODS AND MATERIALS: Seventeen patients were prescribed 30 fractions of radiotherapy on helical tomotherapy for non-small-cell lung cancer at London Regional Cancer Program from Dec 2005 to March 2007. The GTV was contoured on the daily MVCT studies of each patient. Adapted plans were created using merged MVCT-kilovoltage CT image sets to investigate the advantages …

The Roulette Wheel Is Spinning On A U.S.-Iran War, Erika Simpson Nov 2007

The Roulette Wheel Is Spinning On A U.S.-Iran War, Erika Simpson

Political Science Publications

This article examines the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, focusing on the potential for military conflict. The author, Erika Simpson, explores the geopolitical dynamics and the statements from key political figures that suggest an increasing likelihood of war. President George W. Bush's remarks about preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, coupled with similar sentiments from other U.S. political leaders, highlight the aggressive stance of the U.S. administration. The article also considers the international response, particularly from Russia, which opposes any military action against Iran. With both nations holding substantial nuclear arsenals on high alert, the risks of …

Assessment Of Human Trabecular Architecture In The Pubis By Three Radiographic Modalities, Andrew D. Wade, Andrew J. Nelson, Gregory J. Garvin, David W. Holdsworth

Anthropology Presentations

This poster discusses technical aspects of an investigation into the use of non-destructive radiological analyses of pubic cancellous bone structure to estimate age-at-death from human skeletal remains. This study stems from findings, in X-ray plain films, of increased rarification and orientation of trabeculae with age [1]; likely in concert with the macroscopic remodelling of the symphyseal surface currently used in estimation of age-at-death.

The study uses three non-destructive X-ray imaging modalities: plain film radiography, computed tomography (CT), and micro-CT (μCT). Plain film radiography has greater spatial resolution than CT [2] and is relatively inexpensive, widely available, and, with portable X-ray …

Donating Fresh Versus Frozen Embryos To Stem Cell Research: In Whose Interests?, Carolyn Mcleod, Françoise Baylis Nov 2007

Donating Fresh Versus Frozen Embryos To Stem Cell Research: In Whose Interests?, Carolyn Mcleod, Françoise Baylis

Philosophy Publications

Some stem cell researchers believe that it is easier to derive human embryonic stem cells from fresh rather than frozen embryos and they have had in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinicians invite their infertility patients to donate their fresh embryos for research use. These embryos include those that are deemed 'suitable for transfer' (i.e. to the woman's uterus) and those deemed unsuitable in this regard. This paper focuses on fresh embryos deemed suitable for transfer - hereafter 'fresh embryos'- which IVF patients have good reason not to donate. We explain why donating them to research is not in the self-interests specifically …

Development Of Rainfall Intensity Duration Frequency Curves For The City Of London Under The Changing Climate, Predrag Prodanovic, Slobodan P. Simonovic Nov 2007

Development Of Rainfall Intensity Duration Frequency Curves For The City Of London Under The Changing Climate, Predrag Prodanovic, Slobodan P. Simonovic

Water Resources Research Report

The main focus of this study is the analysis of short duration high intensity rainfall for London, Ontario under the conditions of the changed climate. Predicted future climate change impacts for Southwestern Ontario include higher temperatures and increases in precipitation, leading to an intensification of the hydrologic cycle. One of the expected consequences of change is an increase in the magnitude and frequency of extreme events (e.g. high intensity rainfall, flash flooding, severe droughts, etc.). Changes in extreme events are of particular importance to the design, operation and maintenance of municipal water management infrastructure.

Municipal water management infrastructure (sewers, storm …

Dissociating Speech Perception And Comprehension At Reduced Levels Of Awareness, Matthew H Davis, Martin R Coleman, Anthony R Absalom, Jennifer M Rodd, Ingrid Johnsrude, Basil F Matta, Adrian M Owen, David K Menon

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

We used functional MRI and the anesthetic agent propofol to assess the relationship among neural responses to speech, successful comprehension, and conscious awareness. Volunteers were scanned while listening to sentences containing ambiguous words, matched sentences without ambiguous words, and signal-correlated noise (SCN). During three scanning sessions, participants were nonsedated (awake), lightly sedated (a slowed response to conversation), and deeply sedated (no conversational response, rousable by loud command). Bilateral temporal-lobe responses for sentences compared with signal-correlated noise were observed at all three levels of sedation, although prefrontal and premotor responses to speech were absent at the deepest level of sedation. Additional …

Blasted’S Hysteria: Rape, Realism, And The Thresholds Of The Visible, Kim Solga Oct 2007

Blasted’S Hysteria: Rape, Realism, And The Thresholds Of The Visible, Kim Solga

Department of English Publications

A curious blind spot remains in the critical response to Sarah Kane’s Blasted : the rape of Cate by Ian. In a play famous for its onstage violence, why is this rape, one of its pivotal moments of brutality, left unstaged? My article seeks to worry this lacuna by exploring the theoretical and historical dimensions of the ‘‘missing’’ in Kane’s play. I argue that Kane’s representation of Cate’s rape as missing signals both her engagement with the history of rape’s representation – an elusive, evasive history rather than an outrageous, in-yer-face one – as well as a deft understanding of …

Developing Social Capital: An Insider Look At The Language Learning And Integration Experiences Of New Canadians, Marilyn Steinbach Oct 2007

Developing Social Capital: An Insider Look At The Language Learning And Integration Experiences Of New Canadians, Marilyn Steinbach

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This article confirms the difficulties of economic and social integration for immigrants, offering qualitative data to add to the existing body of quantitative research. New Canadians need official government assistance to compensate for their lack of social capital, and educational policies and practices must also take into account the need for newcomers to develop social capital. Data from semi-structured ethnographic interviews with eight adult education students in three ESL classes in Montreal indicate that these newcomers are using ethnic group contacts to negotiate access to settlement services in schools and communities. Newcomers who face social exclusion and are unable to …

Internationalization At Canadian Universities: Progress And Challenges, Linda Weber Oct 2007

Internationalization At Canadian Universities: Progress And Challenges, Linda Weber

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

The world-wide demand for international education continues to grow and Canadian universities are rising to meet this need. The rationales for internationalization are many and are culturally, politically, academically, and economically based. An overview of the current state of internationalization, its initiatives and programs at Canadian universities is outlined. Some of the challenges of internationalization include a lack of resources and a need for university-wide centralized and collaborative leadership for incoming international students, and study abroad programs. University staff and faculty would benefit from availing themselves of intercultural training provided through their university international offices. Many Canadian universities fully support …

La Persévérance Chez Les Enseignants Franco-Ontariens, Louise M. Bélair, Christine Lebel

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

Differentiated Access To Teaching: Teacher Recruitment Agencies And Flexible Work Arrangements, Katina Pollock Oct 2007

Differentiated Access To Teaching: Teacher Recruitment Agencies And Flexible Work Arrangements, Katina Pollock

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

This paper explores the differential way in which employment practices utilized by Teacher Recruitment Agencies (TRAs) in England generate inequitable access to the teaching profession. Specifically, this paper critically examines the ways in which the present labour practices of TRAs impacts particular groups of women and marginalized people. The paper first describes the teacher recruitment agency phenomena, followed by an account of the feminist perspective that I use and the impact of educational reform on work arrangements. Next, I discuss flexible work and gender. Finally, I describe the place of foreign-born teachers and professional development issues in these new employment …
