A Rational Expectations Equilibrium Model Of A Small, Specialized Economy, Barry Vincent Cozier Jan 1984

A Rational Expectations Equilibrium Model Of A Small, Specialized Economy, Barry Vincent Cozier

Digitized Theses

In this thesis, a rational expectations equilibrium model of the business cycle in a small, open, specialized economy is formulated and tested. The business cycle is as much a fact in small developing economies as in large industrialized ones. Much recent work on business cycles in closed economies and "large" open economies has employed a rational expectations equilibrium framework with incomplete information and this is the approach used in this thesis. The model developed is specifically designed to capture the essential features of small developing economies. The economies modelled here are highly specialized and export oriented, are price takers in …

Sources Of Growth And Change In The Economy Of Ghana, 1900-1965, Joseph Baah-Dwomoh Jan 1984

Sources Of Growth And Change In The Economy Of Ghana, 1900-1965, Joseph Baah-Dwomoh

Digitized Theses

The primary objective of this study has been to quantitatively reconstruct a picture of the economic history of Ghana by putting together a set of macroeconomic data to cover the first six and a half decades of the twentieth century and using the data to analyze the sources of economic growth and structural change experience of the economy.;The analysis of the macro-experience of Ghana has shown the almost tripling in real terms in GDP per capita and the change of the economy from a virtual subsistence one around 1900 to an open, growth-oriented system by 1960. Recent experience in Ghana …

Analytic Studies In Econometric Inference With Small Samples, Lonnie John Magee Jan 1984

Analytic Studies In Econometric Inference With Small Samples, Lonnie John Magee

Digitized Theses

In this thesis the analytic techniques of Edgeworth and Nagar's expansion and approximate slope are used to examine small sample properties of estimators and test statistics in some econometric models. The chapters are largely self-contained.;Chapter one provides some definitions, hypothesis test construction methods, and a decription of techniques to be used and models to be studied.;In chapter two, Edgeworth expansions are used to examine the properties of LR, W and LM test for linear restrictions on regression parameters in the standard one-equation model with Student's t errors. Edgeworth size-correction factors are found to be more effective than degrees-of-freedom-based corrections.;Chapter three …

The Exploitation Of A Nonrenewable Resource Under Imperfect Competition, Nguyen Van Quyen Jan 1984

The Exploitation Of A Nonrenewable Resource Under Imperfect Competition, Nguyen Van Quyen

Digitized Theses

In this thesis, we investigate some problems concerning the exploitation of a nonrenewable resource under imperfect competition. The approach adopted here is that of partial equilibrium. The thesis consists of five chapters, with each chapter dealing with a specific topic.;In Chapter One, we study the pattern of resource extraction exected of a dominant firm facing competition from a naive competitive fringe. In Chapter Two, we build a model of monopoly resource extraction under stochastic entry with consumers as potential entrants. In Chapter Three, we build a model of simultaneous resource extraction and exploration under monopoly. Our model of exploration is …

The Canadian Wheat Trade During The Inter-War Years, Kelvin Gary Grant Jan 1984

The Canadian Wheat Trade During The Inter-War Years, Kelvin Gary Grant

Digitized Theses

The international market conditions confronting exporters of Canadian wheat and Canadian marketing policies of the inter-war period are studied.;Wheat is treated as a heterogeneous product. Following the contemporary British milling and baking literature, bread-making wheats are aggregated into strong, intermediate, and weak types. The results of an empirical study of the United Kingdom's market are consistent with the substitution pattern described in the contemporary literature. It is concluded that the British demand for Canadian wheat is not reasonably approximated as perfectly elastic.;Increased protectionism on the European Continent was effected through instruments which included tariffs, exchange controls, import quotas, importation subject …
