This thesis is a set of essays addressing some issues related to the control of the money supply. Some issues considered are the appropriate instrument for monetary control (monetary base or interest rate), the time horizon over which this control should be effected, and the correct response to deviations of the money stock from its target path.;The first chapter is an introduction. The paper examines the impact of demographic changes on the rate of unemployment in Canada. The central question asked is whether the increase in the number of young people in the population during the 1970s put upward pressure on the overall unemployment-rate. It was expected to have done so because (i) a greater fraction of the labour-force would now fall within an unemployment-prone age-category, and (ii) in the absence of sufficient wage flexibility, a shift in the supply curve of a particular type of labour (defined by age) would generate unemployment in that age-group (this is the so-called cohort-crowding hypothesis). …

The purpose of the thesis is to examine some of the implications of the policy initiatives taken by both levels of government during the 1974-80 period (i.e., from the OPEC oil embargo and subsequent quadrupling of posted world oil prices to the introduction of the National Energy Program, or NEP). A survey of the fiscal instruments employed by both the federal and the oil-producing provincial levels of government to distribute the oil revenues generated in Canada is presented.
