Examining Geographic And Social Barriers To Hiv Treatment Adherence In Kampala, Uganda, Gabrielle Bruser Aug 2020

Examining Geographic And Social Barriers To Hiv Treatment Adherence In Kampala, Uganda, Gabrielle Bruser

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

With the rapid expansion of HIV treatment programs across sub-Saharan Africa, substantial progress has been made towards universal treatment accessibility in Uganda; however, new healthcare challenges have been emerging, such as the development of drug-resistant HIV, which threaten to undermine achievements made thus far. In order for HIV treatment to be effective, people living with HIV (PLWH) must be highly adherent without missing a single dose, which can be challenging for those also facing difficulties such as financial insecurity. In the context of Kampala, Uganda’s urban capital, it has been suggested that healthcare accessibility is made difficult by several physical …

Quantifying The Outcomes Of A Virtual Reality (Vr)-Based Gamified Neck Rehabilitation, Shahan Salim Aug 2019

Quantifying The Outcomes Of A Virtual Reality (Vr)-Based Gamified Neck Rehabilitation, Shahan Salim

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Neck pain is a major global public health concern and adds a significant financial burden to both the healthcare system as well as people suffering from it. Additionally, it presents measurement and evaluation challenges for clinicians as well as adherence challenges and treatment barriers for the patients. We have developed a virtual reality (VR)-based video game that can be used to capture outcomes that may aid in the assessment and treatment of neck pain. We investigated: (i) performance metrics of overall accuracy, accuracy based on movement difficulty, duration, and total envelope of movement; (ii) stability across sessions; (iii) accuracy across …

Nutrition And Exercise Interventions During Pregnancy: How Important Is Adherence?, Taniya S. Nagpal Aug 2019

Nutrition And Exercise Interventions During Pregnancy: How Important Is Adherence?, Taniya S. Nagpal

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Lifestyle interventions (nutrition and exercise) offered during pregnancy may prevent excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) and improve pregnancy outcomes. The efficacy of previous interventions has been inconsistent as some studies ‘successfully’ achieve their health outcome goals while others have had a null effect. A common limitation reported among ‘unsuccessful’ studies is low adherence. The objective of this dissertation was to execute three independent yet interrelated studies to determine if adherence is a key factor in determining the success of a lifestyle intervention during pregnancy. Study 1 compared adherence to ‘successful’ and ‘unsuccessful’ lifestyle interventions during pregnancy using a systematic review. …

Behaviour Change Intervention Strategies To Prevent Excessive Gestational Weight Gain In Pregnant Women Using A Nutrition And Exercise Lifestyle Intervention Program (Nelip), Karishma Hosein Oct 2017

Behaviour Change Intervention Strategies To Prevent Excessive Gestational Weight Gain In Pregnant Women Using A Nutrition And Exercise Lifestyle Intervention Program (Nelip), Karishma Hosein

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Maternal obesity and excessive gestational weight gain (EGWG) are associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. To evaluate the effectiveness of different behaviour change intervention strategies, it was hypothesized that the introduction of a single behaviour change, followed by a second, would be more effective at preventing early and total EGWG in pregnant women compared to the early simultaneous introduction of both behaviour changes. Eighteen pregnant women were block randomized into one of 3 Nutrition and Exercise Lifestyle Intervention Program (NELIP) strategies (full NELIP, Nutrition followed by Exercise N+E, Exercise followed by Nutrition E+N) and were followed at weekly face-to-face …

Food For Health: An Investigation Of Infant Feeding Practices, Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy, And Perceived Barriers And Facilitators, Jessica W. Smith Aug 2014

Food For Health: An Investigation Of Infant Feeding Practices, Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy, And Perceived Barriers And Facilitators, Jessica W. Smith

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Exclusive breastfeeding is associated with numerous health benefits for both mother and child, and is recommended for the first 6 months of an infant’s life. The purpose of this prospective study was to examine, using a survey-based design, the breastfeeding practices, self-efficacy, and perceived barriers and facilitators of primiparous mothers in London, Ontario. A total of 71 women (Mage = 30.0, SD = 4.3) participated in the study. Women (breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding) were asked to complete online surveys at three time points: < 4 weeks postpartum, 3 months postpartum, and 6 months postpartum. Results indicated that rates of exclusive breastfeeding decreased over time, whereas partial and non-breastfeeding rates increased. Women in the exclusive breastfeeding category reported the greatest levels of breastfeeding self-efficacy at all time points. Lastly, participants identified a number of breastfeeding-related facilitators (e.g., partner support, community services) and barriers (e.g., insufficient milk supply, latching difficulties).

The Relative Influences Of Knowledge, Beliefs And Preferences On Adherence To Asthma Medication, Naomi J. Gryfe Saperia Feb 2012

The Relative Influences Of Knowledge, Beliefs And Preferences On Adherence To Asthma Medication, Naomi J. Gryfe Saperia

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Purpose: Patients’ decisions about whether or not to adhere to their prescribed regimens are shaped not only by their knowledge and beliefs about their condition and its treatment options, but also by what they value in these domains. This study represents an integration of theory and methods from nursing/public health, psychology and economics to explore the additive effects of knowledge, beliefs and preferences on adherence to preventer medication in a sample of patients with asthma. It was hypothesized that knowledge, beliefs and preferences pertaining to long term outcomes would independently predict improved adherence. Method: 140 patients with asthma were asked …

Examining The Effect Of A Goal-Setting Intervention On Adherence To Physical Activity In Minority Women, Duate B. Adegbite Jan 2009

Examining The Effect Of A Goal-Setting Intervention On Adherence To Physical Activity In Minority Women, Duate B. Adegbite

Digitized Theses

Approximately two-thirds of the Canadian population are not sufficiently active to gain healthbenefits. Ofparticularinterest, womenbelongingtoethnicminoritygroupshave been found to have lower rates of participation in physical activity than Caucasian women, the former comprise an extremely inactive segment of the population. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to determine whether a goal-setting physical activity intervention could positively influence leisure time physical activity adherence and self- efficacy among minority women. Ninety-seven ethnic minority women from the London, Ontario community enrolled in the study and seventeen participants withdrew (an overall attrition rate of 17.53%). Repeated measures ANOVAs carried out on the adherence measures …

The Impact Of Body Composition Feedback On Body Image, Motivation, And Adherence In An Exercise Program For Women, Erin S. Pearson Jan 2008

The Impact Of Body Composition Feedback On Body Image, Motivation, And Adherence In An Exercise Program For Women, Erin S. Pearson

Digitized Theses

Given the magnitude of health consequences resulting from physical inactivity, a need exists for the development of strategies which enhance adoption of and adherence to exercise programs. Some exercise intervention studies have examined body image change in relation to change in body composition (i.e., the relative amount of fat-free mass vs. fat mass in the body). However, these studies have produced mixed results with some studies showing no relationship between change in body image and change in body composition and others showing a significant relationship. One reason for these mixed findings may be due to how body composition has been …
