Characterizing Persistent Developmental Dyscalculia: A Cognitive Neuroscience Approach, Stephanie D. Bugden
Characterizing Persistent Developmental Dyscalculia: A Cognitive Neuroscience Approach, Stephanie D. Bugden
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Developmental dyscalculia (DD) is a specific learning disorder of calculation abilities. In the present thesis I report a series behavioural and functional neuroimaging studies to further elucidate the core numerical deficits underlying DD. I recruited a sample of children with DD who demonstrated persistent impairments in arithmetic. In Chapter 2, to validate the selection criteria, I compared the performance of children with and without persistent DD on a test of numerical magnitude processing. The data showed that only children with persistent DD presented with deficits in numerical magnitude processing, while those with inconsistent DD perform at the level of age-matched …
Global Assessment Of Severity Of Epilepsy (Gase) Scale In Children With Epilepsy: Construct Validity, Stability, And Responsiveness, Cindy J. Chan
Global Assessment Of Severity Of Epilepsy (Gase) Scale In Children With Epilepsy: Construct Validity, Stability, And Responsiveness, Cindy J. Chan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The Global Assessment of Severity of Epilepsy (GASE) Scale is a single-item, 7-point global rating scale designed for neurologist-report of overall severity of epilepsy in children. Preliminary evidence suggested it may be valid and reliable for research and clinical use. Data from the Health-Related Quality of Life in Children with Epilepsy Study (HERQULES) was analyzed to evaluate validity, stability, and responsiveness of GASE scores. Spearman’s Rho indicated that GASE was moderately correlated with key aspects of epilepsy but weakly correlated with parents’ perceptions of child health. Frequency and intensity of seizures and interference of epilepsy or drugs with daily activities …
Exploring Communication Apprehension And Its Relationship To Communication Attitude And Socio-Communicative Functioning In Children With Velopharyngeal Insufficiency, Agnieszka Dzioba
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Myriad findings on children with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) indicate the potential for this population of children to experience feelings of apprehension specific to communication and the potential for other psychological and social difficulties. The purpose of the present investigation was to explore the construct of communication apprehension (CA) and its potential relationship to social and communicative functioning in a diverse group of children with VPI. Potential linkages between CA and multiple socio-communicative constructs including attitude, speech satisfaction, speech and language skill, social competence, and speech severity were explored in a cohort of children with and without VPI, followed by an …
Inter-Relationships Of Functional Status In Children With Cerebral Palsy: An Extension, Emily Dyszuk
Inter-Relationships Of Functional Status In Children With Cerebral Palsy: An Extension, Emily Dyszuk
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The primary aim of this study was to establish functional profiles for children with cerebral palsy (CP), by determining the relationships between three classification systems (the Gross Motor Function Classification System, the Manual Ability Classification System, and the Communication Function Classification System). The secondary aim of this study was to investigate the number and impact of health conditions in the most prevalent clusters. Data were analyzed on 222 children with CP with an average age of 6.1 years, from several locations across North America. A total of 56 out of 125 possible combinations were recorded; four most prevalent cell combinations …
Examining The Influence Of Environmental Opportunities And Exposures On Children's Sleep Duration, Leanne B. Mcintosh
Examining The Influence Of Environmental Opportunities And Exposures On Children's Sleep Duration, Leanne B. Mcintosh
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This research aims to fill a void in knowledge on how certain characteristics of the built and natural environments may impact children’s sleep duration. Data was collected on a sample of 614 children (aged 9-14 years) drawn from 22 elementary schools throughout the City of London, Ontario, Canada. Participants completed the STEAM (Spatial Temporal Environmental Activity Monitoring) protocol which involved completion of a survey, daily activity diary, and tracking the time they spent in different environments with a portable Global Position System. This thesis incorporates an innovative analytical approach which uses two Geographic Information System techniques to examine if and …
Children's Voices In A School-Based Mental Health Needs Assessment, Shannon Byrne
Children's Voices In A School-Based Mental Health Needs Assessment, Shannon Byrne
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
As a part of a larger community mental health needs assessment, grade four students’ experiences of emotions related to mental health constructs were examined using photovoice methodology. Descriptive statistics from a large-scale survey were included to add context to the findings. The overall purpose of the study aimed to: (a) inform the school-based mental healthcare initiative that will be implemented in the school of the participants, and (b) add to the literature regarding children’s self-reported experiences of emotions. Photovoice allowed participants to visually represent their experiences and engage in dialogue about emotions linked to mental health and illness. Discussion questions …
Mental Health And Safety In Schools: Children’S Perceptions And Experiences, Larissa K. Pipe
Mental Health And Safety In Schools: Children’S Perceptions And Experiences, Larissa K. Pipe
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The current study employed an exploratory analysis of children’s perceptions of safety, mental health and experiences with bullying in school. Secondary data from surveys administered to a Southwestern Ontario school board was used to gather frequency data in addition to exploring the associations between mental health, feelings of safety and experiences with bullying. Furthermore, a photovoice component was administered in a select school, intended to gain a deeper understanding of what leads children to feel safe and unsafe, while in school. Results highlight the number of children experiencing mental health concerns as well as the importance of support systems for …
Examining Children's Perceptions And Use Of Their Neighbourhood Built Environments: A Novel Participatory Mapping Approach, Stephen Fitzpatrick
Examining Children's Perceptions And Use Of Their Neighbourhood Built Environments: A Novel Participatory Mapping Approach, Stephen Fitzpatrick
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis uses a mixed methods approach to contribute towards a more complete understanding of the relationship between the built environment and children’s active school travel. It is argued that active travel –human powered transportation – to and from school provides regular physical activity that can help reverse rising rates of overweight or obese Canadian children. The built environment of a child’s school neighbourhood has been shown to influence travel decisions. To achieve higher rates of children’s active travel, a comprehensive understanding of the built environment is required.
This study uses child-led perceptual mapping (CLPM) and GIS analysis in a …
Children's Mental Health, Yvonne A. Asare-Bediako
Children's Mental Health, Yvonne A. Asare-Bediako
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The study of children’s mental health has largely been the domain of developmental psychologists and psychiatrists. These studies focus on parental mental health, and examine its direct and indirect effects, through a family’s psychosocial environment. Relatively little attention is given to socio-structural factors. By contrast, the sociology of mental health focuses on such structural factors as poverty and income, examining the extent to which stressors and strains may pattern the effects of these factors on children’s psychopathology. Adding to the divergence in research is the use of maternal reports in the assessment of children’s mental health. These reports often reflect …
Singing Competency And Language Abilities In Children, Rebecca Herbert
Singing Competency And Language Abilities In Children, Rebecca Herbert
Undergraduate Honours Theses
Past research found that there seems to be a relationship between musical and non-musical abilities. Specifically, research has identified many benefits of singing for children. Singing has been linked to certain language skills such as pronunciation, the learning of vocabulary, and sentence structure. Singing has also been used as a means of improving language abilities in children with language and mental delays. The present study aimed to identify if there was a direct correlation between singing competency and language abilities in children. In the present study, language abilities were measured using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Expressive One …
