The Effect Of Chilling Temperatures On Aspects Of Porphyrin Metabolism In Leaves Of Seedlings Of Maize (Zea Mays L), Robert Russell Hodgins Jan 1987

The Effect Of Chilling Temperatures On Aspects Of Porphyrin Metabolism In Leaves Of Seedlings Of Maize (Zea Mays L), Robert Russell Hodgins

Digitized Theses

The effect of chilling temperatures on porphyrin biosynthesis was studied in maize (Zea mays, L.). The results were consistent with the hypothesis that there are at least 3 temperature sensitive sites that compromise the accumulation of chlorophyll. Week old 28{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C light grown seedlings synthesized negligible amounts of chlorophyll when exposed to 12{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C for a subsequent 6 d. The effects were reversible in that plants returned to 28{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C had the chlorophyll content restored to control levels. The results were not consistent with a low temperature mediated decrease of carotenoid content, depletion of chlorophyll per chloroplast, accelerated senescence, or a dessication mediated …

Teacher Flexibility In Relation To Classroom Teaching Behaviour And Perceived Teacher Effectiveness, Petra Duschner Jan 1987

Teacher Flexibility In Relation To Classroom Teaching Behaviour And Perceived Teacher Effectiveness, Petra Duschner

Digitized Theses

The goal of this study was to investigate relationships among teacher flexibility, classroom teaching behaviour, and perceived teacher effectiveness in a sample of 95 secondary school teachers. Teacher flexibility was defined as a global, multifaceted characteristic consisting of both a cognitive and personality component. Three paper-and-pencil measures of each component of flexibility were employed. Frequency of occurrence of specific teaching behaviours and overall teaching effectiveness were rated by students in classes taught by participating teachers, using a 40-item teaching evaluation form.;The results provided very little support for an underlying unidimensional teacher flexibility construct in either the cognitive or personality domain. …

Equilibrium In A Cash-In-Advance Economy With Endogenous Labour Supply, Benoit Carmichael Jan 1987

Equilibrium In A Cash-In-Advance Economy With Endogenous Labour Supply, Benoit Carmichael

Digitized Theses

The thesis analyses the equilibrium of a cash-in-advance economy with endogenous production. In this framework, inflation is a tax on trade, raising the price of goods purchased relative to those supplied. The thesis investigates three aspects of the disruptive effects of this inflation tax on the allocation of resources.;The first essay analyses the effects of anticipated inflation on stock market prices in stationary equilibrium. The essay demonstrates that a permanent rise in the anticipated rate of inflation has a depressing effect on the stock market. There are two reasons for this result. Firstly, the real value of a given stream …

Managers, Learning And The Multinational Firm: Theory And Evidence, Bernard Camille Beaudreau Jan 1987

Managers, Learning And The Multinational Firm: Theory And Evidence, Bernard Camille Beaudreau

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines the question of managerial/organizational advantages as a cause of foreign direct investment (FDI) and thus as the basis of multinational enterprises (MNE's). Three approaches to this question are taken: historical, analytical, and empirical. Historically, managerial/organizational advantages as a cause of MNE's is traced back to the early work of Southard and Phelps in the 1930's. Analytically, three models of embodied-in-managers, intangible assets are advanced, of which two are non-strategic. In the strategic model, foreign direct investment is shown to be a dominant strategy when entry by former managers (defectors) is threatened. These models make use of Penrose's …

The Lotka Hypothesis And Bibliometric Methodology, Paul Travis Nicholls Jan 1987

The Lotka Hypothesis And Bibliometric Methodology, Paul Travis Nicholls

Digitized Theses

This study is an empirical examination of Lotka's law and the bibliometric methodology associated with it. A number of previous investigators have contributed to the empirical validation and generalization of Lotka's hypothesis; however, these studies are largely incomparable and inconclusive, owing to substantial differences in sampling, measurement, parameter estimation, testing, and even basic interpretation of the model. These data are subjected to a consistent secondary analysis here; newly collected data are also analysed, to expand the database of previous results. There are two main objectives in this study: First, to thoroughly and critically review the literature bearing on the statistical …

Price And Output Fluctuations In An Economy With A Limited Capital Market, E Liliana Rojas-Suarez Jan 1987

Price And Output Fluctuations In An Economy With A Limited Capital Market, E Liliana Rojas-Suarez

Digitized Theses

This thesis sets out a rational-expectations model of an economy in which firms are constrained to finance their advances to labor and their purchases of commodity inputs by borrowing from a domestic banking system, which constitutes the entire financial system of the economy. The major implication of this "financial constraint" is that the supply of output comes to depend positively on the real monetary base.;In the closed economy version of the model, a fully anticipated increase in the rate of growth of the monetary base or an anticipated temporary decrease in the level of the monetary base reduces the equilibrium …

Multimarket Search, Paul Murray Anglin Jan 1987

Multimarket Search, Paul Murray Anglin

Digitized Theses

The extensive literature on searching for price information deals almost exclusively with the search for the price of a single good. Since consumers would like to maximize the utility of consumption, a more general problem than minimizing the price of one good, search theory should consider the problem of searching in several markets in order to determine the robustness of conclusions derived from a theory of search in a single market.;In a model of behaviour in a single market, consumers may either accept or reject a price offer. In a model of multimarket search, consumers must also decide which market …

Nathanael Burwash: A Study In Revivalism And Canadian Culture, 1839--1918, Die Marguerite Van Jan 1987

Nathanael Burwash: A Study In Revivalism And Canadian Culture, 1839--1918, Die Marguerite Van

Digitized Theses

The primary focus of this study is the intellectual formation and thought of an influential but largely unknown Canadian Methodist theologian and educator, Nathanael Burwash (1839-1918), dean of theology and chancellor of Victoria University, Toronto. Historians studying the relationship between organized religion and society during Burwash's lifespan have detected a profound reorientation within Canadian Methodism and Protestantism generally, as educated individuals came to terms with the critical thought and structural changes of the late Victorian period. This dissertation seeks to establish to what extent John Wesley's revivalist theology remained authoritative both for Burwash as the denomination's leading theologian, and in …

Characterization Of Anti-Dna Autoantibody Responses From Lymphoid Cells Of Normal Human Origin, Ewa Cairns Jan 1987

Characterization Of Anti-Dna Autoantibody Responses From Lymphoid Cells Of Normal Human Origin, Ewa Cairns

Digitized Theses

Spontaneous and pokeweed mitogen (PWM) induced anti-nucleic acid antibodies were assayed in cultures of tonsillar and peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) of healthy donors as well as in PBLs from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. IgM antibodies (Abs) to single stranded DNA (ssDNA) were detected frequently in PWM cultures of both SLE PBLs (88%) and normal tonsillar lymphocytes (78%). IgM and IgG anti-double stranded DNA Abs were found at high frequencies of 73% and 59% respectively with PWM stimulated SLE PBLs.;Spontaneous production of IgM Abs to ssDNA was identical (44%) in normal tonsillar lymphocytes and PBLs of SLE patients. Human:human hybridomas …

Age Differences In Cognitive Monitoring, Margaret Christine Brigham Jan 1987

Age Differences In Cognitive Monitoring, Margaret Christine Brigham

Digitized Theses

Metacognitive knowledge regulates and directs cognitive activity. Thus, if metacognitive knowledge deteriorates with age cognitive performance as a whole will suffer. The focus of the present research was on assessing age differences in metacognitive knowledge. The cognitive tasks used were: vocabulary learning with two differentially effective learning strategies, prose recall, vocabulary defining and digit span.;On each task subjects were asked to predict their performance either before study, after study (in the case of the prose task only) or after testing. Following the model of Pressley and associates (e.g., Pressley, Ross, Levin and Ghatala, 1984) the ability to monitor ongoing cognitive …

A Photoelectron Study Of The Bonding Ability Of Phosphine And Isocyanide Ligands In Organometallic Complexes, Lisa Marie Dignard Jan 1987

A Photoelectron Study Of The Bonding Ability Of Phosphine And Isocyanide Ligands In Organometallic Complexes, Lisa Marie Dignard

Digitized Theses

High resolution ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of substituted tungsten carbonyl derivatives have been measured. The study of the photoelectron peaks due to the tungsten 5d orbitals in the series of complexes (W(CO){dollar}{lcub}\rm\sb{lcub}n{rcub}L\sb{lcub}6-n{rcub}{rcub}{dollar}) has demonstrated that the Ligand Additivity Model holds for the systems where L are tertiary phosphine ligands. This work confirms that the splitting of the tungsten 5d orbitals observed in the photoelectron spectra can be described in terms of ligand field effects and are not dominated by relaxation effects.;The substituent effects of methyl and phenyl groups in isocyanide and tertiary phosphine ligands have been studied by photoelectron, infrared and …

Molecular And Genetic Analysis Of The Phi X174 A* Gene And The Escherichia Coli Rep Gene, Joseph James Colasanti Jan 1987

Molecular And Genetic Analysis Of The Phi X174 A* Gene And The Escherichia Coli Rep Gene, Joseph James Colasanti

Digitized Theses

This work involves the molecular cloning the {dollar}{lcub}\rm A\sp\ast{rcub}{dollar} gene of {dollar}\Phi{lcub}\rm X174{rcub}{dollar} and the rep gene of E. coli into plasmid vehicles that allow their expression to be regulated. These special plasmids contain controlling elements of phage {dollar}\lambda{dollar} that enable expression of cloned genes to be switched "on" by altering the temperature at which they are propagated.;The presence of the {dollar}{lcub}\rm A\sp\ast{rcub}{dollar} gene product is extremely toxic to E. coli. Therefore, to isolate and stably maintain a recombinant plasmid carrying this gene, its expression must be repressed. The use of an inducible expression vector allowed gene {dollar}{lcub}\rm A\sp\ast{rcub}{dollar} to …

Evidence Of Temporal Coding In A Forward Masking Task, Gregory John Fleet Jan 1987

Evidence Of Temporal Coding In A Forward Masking Task, Gregory John Fleet

Digitized Theses

The use of masking to study the auditory system's frequency selectivity characteristics has been quite extensive. From these studies, a specific model of spectral analysis has been developed that emphasizes the energy distribution across frequency. This perspective is acceptable when describing the processing of simple tones, but certainly lacking when interest is in a description of the processing of more complex stimuli. The following experiments examined the ability of sinusoidal signals to mask single- and double-frequency probes. The paradigm was similar to that used in psychophysical tuning curve studies: the masker level was adapted to just mask a low-level probe …

A Kinematic And Electromyographic Study Of The Mechanisms Contributing To Cerebellar Intention Tremor And Dysmetria, Didier A. Flament

Digitized Theses

The kinematic and electromyographic (EMG) characteristics of cerebellar tremor and dysmetria were investigated in six Cebus monkeys. Cerebellar dysfunction was produced by reversible cooling lesions of the dentate and interposed nuclei. The aims of the study were (1) to compare the characteristics of the cerebellar intention tremor that occurs after the end of a voluntary movement (static or terminal tremor) with the tremor that occurs after the limb has been perturbed, (2) to determine the role played by stretch-evoked activity in generating this tremor, (3) to investigate the nature of the tremor that occurs during a voluntary movement (kinetic tremor) …

Chemistry And Geochemistry Of The Rare Earth Element Phosphates, Ralph George Jonasson Jan 1987

Chemistry And Geochemistry Of The Rare Earth Element Phosphates, Ralph George Jonasson

Digitized Theses

The REE (rare earth element) phosphates are known to be very insoluble, and thus have potential importance in the immobilization of REE in nuclear waste forms and in ocean environments. The hydrous REE phosphates were synthesized with rhabdophane (light REE) and xenotime (heavy REE) structures from dilute nitric acid at or below 100{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C, using the acid hydrolysis of the respective REE-pyrophosphate (P{dollar}\sb 2{dollar}O{dollar}\sb 7\sp{lcub}4-{rcub}{dollar}), over a period of 4 to 6 weeks. These derivatives for several REE were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder x-ray diffraction (XRD), differential analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The DyPO{dollar}\sb 4\cdot{dollar}xH{dollar}\sb 2{dollar}O derivative …

Characterization Of The Specific Pyruvate Transport System Of Escherichia Coli K12, Verna Josephine Lang Jan 1987

Characterization Of The Specific Pyruvate Transport System Of Escherichia Coli K12, Verna Josephine Lang

Digitized Theses

A mutant of Escherichia coli K12 lacking pyruvate dehydrogenase and phosphoenolpyruvate synthase was used to study transport of pyruvate by whole cells. Uptake of pyruvate is maximal with mid-log phase cells and the Michaelis constant for transport is 20{dollar}\mu{dollar}M. Pretreatment of the cells with respiratory chain poisons or uncouplers, with the exception of arsenate, inhibits transport of pyruvate by up to 95%. Lactate and alanine, natural analogs of pyruvate, competitively inhibit transport only at very high concentrations. The synthetic analogues 3-bromopyruvate and pyruvic acid methyl ester are good competitive inhibitors.;In order to further minimize metabolism of pyruvate, membrane vesicles of …

An Empirical Classification Of University Lecturing Styles, Denise Frances Mclean Jan 1987

An Empirical Classification Of University Lecturing Styles, Denise Frances Mclean

Digitized Theses

The goal of this research was to develop and validate an empirical classification of naturally occurring teaching styles in university undergraduate lecture courses. Teaching style was described in terms of patterns of observable classroom teaching behavior.;In the first study, the classification was developed with reference to an initial sample of 298 university lecturers. Each instructor was observed by student raters, who judged the frequency of occurrence of 100 low-inference behaviours. Student ratings were averaged within classes and eight scale scores were computed. A cluster analysis identified six groups of instructors, with members of each group homogeneous in terms of their …

Diffusivity Characteristics Of Glucose In Alginate Immobilization Matrices, Fahar Jehangir Merchant Jan 1987

Diffusivity Characteristics Of Glucose In Alginate Immobilization Matrices, Fahar Jehangir Merchant

Digitized Theses

Conventional techniques of measuring diffusivity (D{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm e{rcub}{dollar}) in gel entrapment matrices are not practical due to the poor mechanical stability of such solids. A novel apparatus was therefore designed to measure D{dollar}\sb {lcub}\rm e{rcub}{dollar} and partition coefficient (K{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm p{rcub}){dollar} of glucose in alginate gels using radiotracer techniques. In this method, a specially prepared, large, spherical alginate bead was mounted to a stainless-steel rod and the sphere immersed in a liquid phase of limited volume. By rotating the bead at high angular velocities, the rate of C{dollar}\sp{lcub}14{rcub}{dollar}-glucose uptake or release was measured using a scintillation spectrometer, under conditions of near ideal …

An Evaluation Of A Community Based Mental Health Course In Indonesia, Makmuri Muchlas Jan 1987

An Evaluation Of A Community Based Mental Health Course In Indonesia, Makmuri Muchlas

Digitized Theses

The present study was an evaluation of the impact of a community-based mental health course offered by the Perwitasari Mental Health Association, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A positive impact could not be assumed, in part because course participants are predominantly married women, and mental health education, with its Western orientation, can to some extent be in conflict with the traditional role of women in Javanese society.;A modified cross-over design was adopted for the evaluation. Three hundred married women recruited for the study were allocated at random to comparison groups of equal size. One group took the course of nine weekly two and …

Progesterone And Estrogens In Intrauterine Tissues During Pregnancy And Labour, Stephen George Power Jan 1987

Progesterone And Estrogens In Intrauterine Tissues During Pregnancy And Labour, Stephen George Power

Digitized Theses

A decline in progesterone and a rise in estrogen levels in the maternal and fetal plasmas occur prior to parturition. I examined the hypothesis that similar changes in the ovine intrauterine tissues are associated with labour. I also determined whether the intrauterine tissues could produce progesterone and estrogens and whether these activities change in association with labour.;Samples of maternal and fetal bloods, fetal fluids, myometrium, endometrium, chorion, amnion and allantois were obtained from pregnant sheep of different gestational ages and in labour occurring either at term or induced prematurely by administration of ACTH to the fetus. Steroids were measured using …

Data were obtained retrospectively from a problem oriented, patient classification system and other aspects of …

Numerical Solution Of Subsidence Mound Problems In Porous Media, Peter Laurens Schuck Jan 1987

Numerical Solution Of Subsidence Mound Problems In Porous Media, Peter Laurens Schuck

Digitized Theses

From the macroscopic equations of flow through a porous medium, a model is developed for the subsidence or decay of a mound of fluid over a horizontal impervious barrier. Three finite difference approaches are used to investigate the resulting moving boundary problem. In the first method, a coordinate transformation is used that fixes the toe or leading edge of the fluid location. The resulting problem is solved on a regular grid with interpolation near the moving boundary. In the second method, a coordinate transformation is employed that fixes the location of the entire boundary while in the third method, a …

Carbon dioxide {dollar}(10\sp{lcub}-1.5{rcub}{dollar} atm), acetic acid (0.5 mg {dollar}\ell\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}),{dollar} and oxalic acid (0.1-0.4 mg {dollar}\ell\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}){dollar} contribute to the low pH (approximately 4) of bog surface waters. Calculations using pH, {dollar}{lcub}\rm SO{rcub}\sb{lcub}4{rcub}\sp{lcub}2-{rcub},{dollar} and total dissolved sulphide show that log {dollar}{lcub}\rm P\sb{lcub}O\sb{lcub}2{rcub}{rcub}{rcub} = -70{dollar} atm. Oxalic and other low molecular weight organic acids are important ligands for Al, Cu, Fe, Pb, and U in these waters.;The concentrations of Na and Mg in the maritime peats exceed their concentrations in the continental bog by more than 3 times, reflecting inputs from sea spray. The Ca contents of Luther bog peats exceed their concentrations …

Surviving Childhood Cancer: The Psychosocial Impact On Parents, Kathy Nixon Speechley Jan 1987

Surviving Childhood Cancer: The Psychosocial Impact On Parents, Kathy Nixon Speechley

Digitized Theses

Childhood cancer is no longer viewed as inevitably fatal but rather as a chronic life-threatening illness. Child cancer patients and their families are now faced with longer phases of treatment and an inability to predict the future. Beyond a general recognition of the potential hardships they must endure, we know very little about the psychosocial consequences for the families of children who are surviving cancer.;The present study was designed to assess whether the presence of chronic strain, as experienced by families of child cancer survivors, is associated with (a) increased psychological distress, as measured by levels of depression and anxiety …

A Major Cell Envelope Protein Of Escherichia Coli K12: Purification And Properties, Douglas Arthur Kuntz Jan 1987

A Major Cell Envelope Protein Of Escherichia Coli K12: Purification And Properties, Douglas Arthur Kuntz

Digitized Theses

The isolation and characterization of a major cell envelope protein from E. coli K12, the so-called "succinate eluted protein" (SEP) is reported. SEP was released by EDTA-sucrose and osmotic shock treatments, or during the formation of spheroplasts. The protein was purified on columns of aspartate-Sepharose (A-S) an affinity matrix previously used for the isolation of dicarboxylate transport components. SEP was the major protein eluted when the A-S columns were equilibrated in low ionic strength buffer (10 mM phosphate containing 5 mM EDTA). SEP was purified to apparent homogeneity as judged by SDS-PAGE, IEF and HPLC/gel filtration. SEP stimulated succinate transport …

The Diffusion Of Minor Technical Productivity And Quality Of Working Life Improvements Within A Firm With Multiple Operating Units, David Allen Johnston Jan 1987

The Diffusion Of Minor Technical Productivity And Quality Of Working Life Improvements Within A Firm With Multiple Operating Units, David Allen Johnston

Digitized Theses

The productivity and quality of working life of operations across a firm with multiple operating units can be improved by the diffusion of minor innovations within the firm. The benefits to operating performance which result from a continuous stream of small, incremental innovations over time are well documented. The extent that individual minor innovations, called Minor Technical Improvements (MTIs) in this thesis, are actually used or could be potentially used through the firm, is not well documented. This thesis addresses three questions about the diffusion of minor innovations in firms with multiple operating units. (1) To what extent do MTIs …

A Natural Law Perspective On The Legal Positivist Theory Of Legal Obligation, John Brendan Killoran Jan 1987

A Natural Law Perspective On The Legal Positivist Theory Of Legal Obligation, John Brendan Killoran

Digitized Theses

This dissertation proposes to examine the legal positivist theory of legal obligation from the critical standpoint of Thomistic natural law theory.;The difficulty with legal positivism, as the natural lawyer sees it, resides in its inability to present a satisfactory explanation of the normativity of law. In the positivism of Austin and Kelsen there is a propensity to conflate law with force, with the consequence that their positivist theories of law neglect to analyze adequately the distinctive 'ought' character of ascriptions of legal obligation.;To be sure, some contemporary legal thinkers have acknowledged these points. Thus Ronald Dworkin, perhaps the most important …

Conflict Management After Rbo: From Process To Procedure, Paul Douglas Bergman Jan 1987

Conflict Management After Rbo: From Process To Procedure, Paul Douglas Bergman

Digitized Theses

The Ontario Ministry of Labor offers a program called Relations By Objectives (RBO) which was used forty-eight times between 1979 and 1985 to help management and union improve their relationships.;Certain writers in the Industrial Relations field have recently questioned the program's ability to create any significant improvements in management-union relationships, suggesting that the program's assumptions and techniques are inappropriate in a union-management setting.;This thesis tracks the RBO program back to its roots--citing original sources where necessary--to illustrate that the Relations By Objectives program has strong theoretical links, and has the potential for significant changes in management-union relationships. The research then …
