What Is The “Cognitive” In Cognitive Diversity? Investigating The Convergent Validity Of Cognitive Diversity Measures, Alyssa M. Pandolfo Apr 2017

What Is The “Cognitive” In Cognitive Diversity? Investigating The Convergent Validity Of Cognitive Diversity Measures, Alyssa M. Pandolfo

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Among researchers who examine team composition, the cognitive diversity construct has received considerable attention. There is little agreement, however, as to what the “cognitive” in cognitive diversity actually refers. Within this literature, researchers have examined variation in team members’ backgrounds and experiences, their knowledge, skills, and abilities, their cognitive styles, their attitudes and perspectives, or a combination of these characteristics. These varying conceptualizations have led to different operationalizations and measures of cognitive diversity, calling into some question the validity of these measures. In this research, we examined the convergent validity of three cognitive diversity measures that have been used in …

Dynamics Of Motor System Excitability During Auditory Anticipation, Justine Czajka Apr 2017

Dynamics Of Motor System Excitability During Auditory Anticipation, Justine Czajka

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The ability to anticipate complex sounds, like words in speech or the beat in music, is an important aspect of human perception. However, the changes of excitability in the motor system during auditory anticipation have not been characterized. Here, we applied single-pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to the primary motor cortex to elicit motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from the first dorsal interosseous muscle, the amplitude of which indexes motor system excitability. Healthy right-handed participants (N = 20) underwent TMS stimulation during listening to regular (periodic) tone sequences at three rates (200ms, 550ms, and 900ms) and irregular tone sequences. We assessed …

Reaching-To-Grasp My Intention: Relating Communication Skill With Social Action, Jennifer A. Cooper Apr 2017

Reaching-To-Grasp My Intention: Relating Communication Skill With Social Action, Jennifer A. Cooper

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The present study investigated whether social aptitude is related to the effects of social intention on reach-to-grasp actions. Reach-to-grasp actions performed with social intentions (e.g. reaching to pick up a coffee cup to give to a friend) are characterized by different kinematic patterns than those performed with nonsocial intentions (e.g. reaching to pick up a coffee cup to move it aside). These intention-based kinematic changes are thought to serve a communicative function, allowing co-actors to better predict and respond to actions that are relevant to them. If this is true, then individuals who rate themselves as strong communicators should show …

The Resiliency Scale For Young Adults Revisited, Sabrina Ford, Don H. Saklofske Ph.D., Claire Wilson Msc Apr 2017

The Resiliency Scale For Young Adults Revisited, Sabrina Ford, Don H. Saklofske Ph.D., Claire Wilson Msc

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Resiliency has been examined in past research using a scale for children and adolescents, called the Resiliency Scales for Children and Adolescents (RSCA; Prince-Embury, 2006, 2007). This scale is based on a three-factor model for resiliency that includes Sense of Mastery, Sense of Relatedness, and Emotional Reactivity (Prince-Embury, 2006, 2007). The RSCA has recently been revised for young adults, by developing the Resiliency Scale for Young Adults (RSYA). The RSYA is a 50-item self-report measure, with each item rated on a scale from 0 = Never; to 4 = Almost always. The current study is a replication of …

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation To Assess Motor System Excitability Fluctuations During Auditory Anticipation And Beat Perception, Johannes G.P Teselink Apr 2017

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation To Assess Motor System Excitability Fluctuations During Auditory Anticipation And Beat Perception, Johannes G.P Teselink

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Humans tend to spontaneously move to the regular beat of musical rhythm. Beat perception is the tendency to sense and anticipate the regular time positions (beats) that movements synchronize with. The neural motor system plays an important role in beat perception, but the dynamics of excitability in the motor system associated with beat perception have not been characterized. This project investigated motor system excitability fluctuations using transcranial magnetic stimulation and electromyography during perception of beat-based and non-beat-based rhythms. We applied single-pulse TMS over the left primary motor cortex of healthy participants as they listened to three types of rhythms that …

Correlation Between Automatic Processing Of Symbolic And Non-Symbolic Magnitudes In Children, Jake M B Kaufman Apr 2017

Correlation Between Automatic Processing Of Symbolic And Non-Symbolic Magnitudes In Children, Jake M B Kaufman

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Does the automatic activation of number influence children’s decision-making on physical size judgments? Previous work dealing with how children process symbolic and non-symbolic numbers typically involves making direct judgments about numerical values. In this study, instead of asking for judgments about numerical magnitude, we assessed the automatic activation of number by asking children to make physical size judgments. This will allow us to further learn how children use their understanding of numbers to help them make decisions that do not directly involve numbers. In addition to this, by looking at how the processing of symbolic and non-symbolic numbers relate, we …

Examining A Normative Model Of Stress Using Choice Under Risk, Zarmina Khan Apr 2017

Examining A Normative Model Of Stress Using Choice Under Risk, Zarmina Khan

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Novel research in the domain of decisional control (DC), the process whereby individuals in multifaceted stressing situations make probabilistic judgments in order to reduce the occurrence of adverse events, has recently tested a mathematically specified normative model of coping with stress. This model used choice under uncertainty to understand the cognitive underpinnings of choice and linked threat. Findings from this undertaking have supported the notion that individualized subjective expected utilities (SEU) provide the best fit over group-averaged SEU and objective utility models in a sample of undergraduate students. The present research examined whether this finding holds true for choice under …

The Influence Of Discrepant Sexual Ideals On Relationship Dissolution, Samantha Medd Apr 2017

The Influence Of Discrepant Sexual Ideals On Relationship Dissolution, Samantha Medd

Undergraduate Honors Theses

While a plethora of research exists on relationships ideals and sex, and how these factors affect important relationship outcomes (i.e. relationship dissolution), there has yet to be an investigation into the existence or importance of sexual ideals. The current study seeks to assess whether sexual ideals affect important relationship outcomes. Specifically, will a greater mismatch in sexual ideals result in a higher likelihood of perceived relationship dissolution? It was predicted that couples that exhibit less of a match in their sexual ideals would be more likely to perceive their relationship to dissolve, and it was further predicted that this effect …

Different Types Of Love In Polyamory: Between Primary And Secondary, Haojun (Vivie) Jiang Apr 2017

Different Types Of Love In Polyamory: Between Primary And Secondary, Haojun (Vivie) Jiang

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Polyamory is a relationship model where every partner involved in the relationship practices or consents to the practice of multiple simultaneous relationships. Polyamory typically consists of at least two partners, and the most common model is the primary-secondary relationship. Previous research found higher intimacy, commitment, and investment in primary relationships, while greater sexual frequency and satisfaction in secondary relationships (Mogilski, Memering, Welling, & Shackelford, 2015; Mitchell, Bartholomew, & Cobb, 2014; Balzarini, Campbell, Holmes, Lehmiller, Harman, Kohut, & Atkins, 2017). As these relationship outcomes are related to romantic attraction, passionate love, companionate love, and jealousy, the purpose of the study was …
