Brownfield Development: A New Approach To An Old Problem, Jennifer Corum

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

An alarming number of abandoned properties in the United States stifle community productivity and pose serious health risks. Changes in environmental liability laws may effectively remediate these sites, but brownfield rehabilitation requires careful cost benefit analysis on a per-site basis.

The National Weather Service's Polygon Method: Warning Dissemination Of The Future, Crystal L. Bergman Oct 2005

The National Weather Service's Polygon Method: Warning Dissemination Of The Future, Crystal L. Bergman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The National Weather Service (NWS) is continuously improving its forecasting skills, but forecasters still cannot accurately predict the path of a tornado or a severe thunderstorm. The NWS has developed a new warning system in which the warned area is outlined by a polygon, not a county boundary. The polygon-waming approach is expected to significantly reduce the total square-mile area of warnings not followed by an event, called the False Alarm Area. There are three central issues concerning the failure of the polygon-warning method: I) the size of the counties impacted by a storm, 2) the impact of the new …

Facilitative Government And The Autonomy-Supportive Society, Daniel Anthony Decaro Jan 2005

Facilitative Government And The Autonomy-Supportive Society, Daniel Anthony Decaro

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The United States is currently struggling to resolve a number of highly contentious and potentially society-changing dilemmas, such as "gay" marriage, human genetic engineering, and universal healthcare. Rather than offer some ethical rubric with which to measure the moral worth of the particular contentions themselves, I attempt to resolve these dilemmas by examining the governmental/societal decision-making context in which they occur. Research into controlling versus autonomy-supportive environments suggests that the U.S. government, and subsequently the society, may be characterized as controlling. Research also shows that needs satisfaction, motivation, and decision-making performance tend to be diminished in a controlling environment and …

Train Up A Child In The Way He Should Go: The Jehovah's Witness' Supreme Court Cases Of The Early 1940s, Kimberly A. Tharpe Jan 2005

Train Up A Child In The Way He Should Go: The Jehovah's Witness' Supreme Court Cases Of The Early 1940s, Kimberly A. Tharpe

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The cases brought by the Jehovah's Witnesses in the early 1940s prompted the Supreme Court to confront the situations that occurred when children's interests came into conflict with parental rights over religious issues. With Minersville v. Gobitis in 1940, the Court held that the expulsion of Witness children from public schools did not constitute a violation of the religious rights of parents even though the objection was religiously based. The Court overturned this decision three years later with West Virginia v. Barnette, ruling that such expulsions did, in fact, violate the religious rights of the parents involved. It was in …

Molecular Mechanics Analysis Of Platinum Compounds Chelated To Methionine Residues, Donald James Chapman Jan 2005

Molecular Mechanics Analysis Of Platinum Compounds Chelated To Methionine Residues, Donald James Chapman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Recently, interest in certain platinum compounds has increased significantly due to the discovery that they have either anticancer properties, proteolytic properties, or both. In order to find platinum compounds with similar properties that work better or can be synthesized less expensively, one can use computerized molecular mechanics can be used. In this study a modified AMBER force field was used to find the most stable conformations ofplatinum (II) N, N diethylethylenediamine (Et-en) compounds chelated to various amino acid residue combinations. Using comparisons with other platinum compounds, and a bis-guanine chelate as the standard for all compounds, this research found that …

The Greening Of The Dhamma: Engaged Buddhist Environmentalism In The United States And Thailand, Hilary Bogert Jan 2005

The Greening Of The Dhamma: Engaged Buddhist Environmentalism In The United States And Thailand, Hilary Bogert

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Since the 1960s, the movement known as "Engaged Buddhism" has grown on a global scale. From protesting human rights violations to spending meditation retreats as homeless persons on the streets ofNew York, Engaged Buddhists react to modem problems by using a Buddhist framework. The Engaged Buddhist Environmentalism movement is a specific example of Engaged Buddhism. In the United States, Engaged Buddhist Environmentalists respond to problems such as nuclear waste and species extinction by reinterpreting traditional Buddhist doctrines and applying them to an ecological setting. Thai Engaged Buddhist Environmentalists, on the other hand, apply those doctrines to Buddhist rituals in response …

Phylogenetics Of Rubus Ursinus And R. Macraai (Rosaceae): Evidence Of Hybrid Origin, Brittany Sutherland Jan 2005

Phylogenetics Of Rubus Ursinus And R. Macraai (Rosaceae): Evidence Of Hybrid Origin, Brittany Sutherland

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study had three goals: elucidating the affinity between Rubus ursin us and Rubus macraei, assessing the hybrid origin of both species, and determining closely related species that may be putative parents. To this end, three chloroplast DNA regions-rp1l6, trnK, trnL-tmF-and two nuclear DNA regions-the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and granule-bound starch synthase (GBSSI)-were sequenced for five R. ursinus individuals, including 6x, 8x, l lx, 12x, and 13x ploidy levels, and R. macraei, which is hexaploid. Sequence data were placed into an existing framework of a Rubus phylogeny. Three phylogenies were created that demonstrate a close association between R. …

Idealized Images In Magazine Advertising And Their Effect On Male Body Satisfaction, Amy L. Baird Jan 2005

Idealized Images In Magazine Advertising And Their Effect On Male Body Satisfaction, Amy L. Baird

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Advertisements in the media have been scrutinized because of their continuous stereotypical depictions of unrealistic or idealized pictures of people (Richins, 1991). This scrutiny is based on the view that consumers will see these idealized images in the media and either consciously or unconsciously compare themselves to these images. In particular, it is suggested that thin and beautiful female models in advertisements have created dissatisfaction among women in relation to their bodies, a situation that may result in unhealthy practices such as eating disorders. This idea that idealized images in advertisements create body dissatisfaction has been widely examined in female …

Moral Developmental Consistency: Investigating The Role Of Academic Major, Grace Livingston Jan 2005

Moral Developmental Consistency: Investigating The Role Of Academic Major, Grace Livingston

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

A variety of studies have shown education majors to score significantly lower on assessments ofmora I reasoning and moral judgment. Previous studies have compared education majors with composite samples using a relatively imprecise measure of moral judgment (the DIT P-score); these studies have addressed only one aspect ofmoral development, moral reasoning, and also fail to distingnish between micromorality and macromorality. Because of these shortcomings in previous research, this study questions the degree to which differences exist among college majors. This study considers scores on the Defining Issues Test-2 (DIT-2), Attitudes Towards Human Rights Inventory (ATHRI), Racial and Ethical Sensitivity Test …

Does Genertic Variation Support Geographical And Morphological Patterns? A Phylogentic Interpretation Of Mentha Longifolia (Lamiaceae) Using Molecular Data, Kate L. Hertwick Jan 2005

Does Genertic Variation Support Geographical And Morphological Patterns? A Phylogentic Interpretation Of Mentha Longifolia (Lamiaceae) Using Molecular Data, Kate L. Hertwick

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Traditional taxonomic studies ofMentha longifolia (European horsemint) have utilized geographical and morphological criteria to classify and define the species. This has led to the recognition of 22 different M longifolia subspecies from Europe, the Middle East, central Asia, and southern Africa. Using nucleotide sequences of chloroplast and nuclear DNA regions of 23 accessions of M. longifolia, we assessed levels of genetic divergence to determine if discrete groupings exist. The results ofthis phylogeographic study indicate that there is sufficient variation among samples to warrant splitting of M. longifolia into several different taxa. For example, two subspecies from South Africa share distinct …

The Furniture Industry: United States Manufacture Vs. Chinese Importers, Emily Burnley Jan 2005

The Furniture Industry: United States Manufacture Vs. Chinese Importers, Emily Burnley

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The United States furniture industry has been affected by the amount of wooden bedroom furniture that has been imported from China over the past five years. In 2003, the domestic industry decided to fight the low-cost Chinese imports by filing suit and instituting trade barriers against the Chinese- who were accused of illegally dumping furniture into the U.S. The following study explores not only the legitimacy of the charge but the larger question of whether or not protective tariffs are warranted.
