Proteolipid Protein 1 Regulates Inflammation In The Central Nervous System, Whitney Hoff Jan 2018

Proteolipid Protein 1 Regulates Inflammation In The Central Nervous System, Whitney Hoff

Wayne State University Theses

Pelizaeus-Merzbacher disease (PMD) results from mutations in the proteolipid protein 1 (PLP1) gene including PLP1 duplications and deletions. The absence of PLP is preferable to PLP1/Plp1 duplication in PMD patients and rodents as lifespan of PLP1/Plp1 null mammals is nearly normal. The reason for this is not entirely understood. However, because of this, less attention has been placed on Plp1 null mutations than on classical PMD mutations. However, data show that PLP levels must be properly titrated to ensure normal brain function. Specifically, changes in PLP1/Plp1 expression can result in massive microglia activation in animal models of PMD and likely …

Radiation-Induced Esophagitis Is Mitigated By Soy Isoflavones, Matthew Donovan Fountain Jan 2015

Radiation-Induced Esophagitis Is Mitigated By Soy Isoflavones, Matthew Donovan Fountain

Wayne State University Theses

Lung cancer patients receiving radiotherapy present with acute and chronic esophagitis, resulting in pain and difficulties swallowing. These effects are due to radiation injury to the normal tissues in the esophagus. Our previous studies in pre-clinical models of lung cancer and naïve mice have shown that soy isoflavones alleviates radiation-induced toxicity to normal lung, including a decrease in pneumonitis and fibrosis. In this study, we have investigated whether radiation-induced esophagitis can be reduced by soy isoflavones. C57BL/6 mice were treated with 10 Gy or 25 Gy for thoracic irradiation and soy isoflavones given daily at 1mg/mouse up to 16 weeks. …

Assessment Of Temporal And Spatial Alterations In Spinal Glial Reactivityand The Extent Of Cervical Spinal Axonal Injury In The Rat After Blast Overpressure, Heena S. Purkait Jan 2015

Assessment Of Temporal And Spatial Alterations In Spinal Glial Reactivityand The Extent Of Cervical Spinal Axonal Injury In The Rat After Blast Overpressure, Heena S. Purkait

Wayne State University Theses

Blast induced neurotrauma (BINT) is the signature wound of veterans returning from various military operations. A substantial percentage of Operations Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veterans have reported to experience ongoing or new pain following their military service. Head (58%) and back (55%) have been the high prevailing locations of pain in these returning OIF and OEF veterans and the underlying pathomechanism of these conditions is yet to be understood. In the context of blast overpressure induced pathological changes, the fundamental question that still needs to be addressed is whether there are any underlying cellular injury changes the …
