Overt And Covert Retaliation Of Service Employees Against Customers Who Mistreat Them, Agnieszka Shepard
Overt And Covert Retaliation Of Service Employees Against Customers Who Mistreat Them, Agnieszka Shepard
Wayne State University Dissertations
Mistreatment of service employees by customers who are demanding and aggressive has become a problem for service organizations. However, it has been the subject of very little research in the organizational behavior literature (Bedi & Schat, 2007). The few studies that have examined service employees’ reactions to such mistreatment (e.g., Doorman & Zapf, 2004, Grandey et al., 2004; Skarlicki, van Jaarsveld, & Walker, 2008; Yagil, 2008, Wang et al., 2014) found that that when service employees believe they have been mistreated, they become angry and upset, and reciprocate the unfair treatment in order to punish unpleasant customers. However, these researchers …

3d Face Reconstruction And Emotion Analytics With Part-Based Morphable Models, Hai Jin
Wayne State University Dissertations
3D face reconstruction and facial expression analytics using 3D facial data are new
and hot research topics in computer graphics and computer vision. In this proposal, we first
review the background knowledge for emotion analytics using 3D morphable face model, including
geometry feature-based methods, statistic model-based methods and more advanced
deep learning-bade methods. Then, we introduce a novel 3D face modeling and reconstruction
solution that robustly and accurately acquires 3D face models from a couple of images
captured by a single smartphone camera. Two selfie photos of a subject taken from the
front and side are used to guide our …
Study Of Probabilistic Characteristics Of Local Field Fluctuations In Isotropic Two Phase Composites: Conductivity Type Problems, David Ostberg
Study Of Probabilistic Characteristics Of Local Field Fluctuations In Isotropic Two Phase Composites: Conductivity Type Problems, David Ostberg
Wayne State University Dissertations
Probability distributions of electric field and electric potential in two-phase particulate composite materials with spherical inclusions are found in the limit of small particle concentration. Additionally a method for the approximation of local fields within random statistically isotropic composites with a finite number of field fluctuations which retain potentiality is presented and an approximate solution with the
variational principal for homogenization in statistical terms for three fluctuations within one phase and a homogeneous second phase is found.
Inflammation In The Pathogenesis Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Haoshen Shi
Inflammation In The Pathogenesis Of Diabetic Retinopathy, Haoshen Shi
Wayne State University Dissertations
The general purpose of these studies is to investigate inflammation in diabetic retinopathy in an effort to identify key intervention points to develop as treatments. Firstly, we showed that the neuropeptide VIP displayed protective immunoregulatory effects on retinal endothelial cells cultured under high glucose conditions. This effect was carried out, in part through the VPAC2 receptor.
Next, we studied the β-adrenergic receptor agonist, Compound 49b, and its effect on the pro-resolving RvD1 pathway. Compound 49b was previously shown to suppress both inflammatory and apoptotic responses in DR. We demonstrated that Compound 49b rescued the high glucose-induced decrese in RvD1 and …
Research Before Teaching And Service? Performances, Perceptions, And Experiences Of Faculty At Teaching-Intensive Institutions, Megan Elizabeth Throm
Research Before Teaching And Service? Performances, Perceptions, And Experiences Of Faculty At Teaching-Intensive Institutions, Megan Elizabeth Throm
Wayne State University Dissertations
The privileging of research over teaching is well documented in scholarship regarding the teaching-research nexus. In this dissertation I analyze the experiences and identities related to research, teaching, and service of sixteen faculty members at teaching-intensive institutions through intensive interviews. The focus on teaching-intensive institutions is driven by two goals. The first goal was to gain a better understanding of how the privileging of research over teaching and service is experienced, understood, and reified by faculty members at teaching-intensive institutions. Second, by giving voice to the experiences of those at teaching-intensive institutions I hope to increase the value placed on …

Lastly, the research observed four class sessions for the experimental group only. Students completed a pretest and a demographic survey in …
Predicting The Probability Of Negotiation In Civil Conflicts: An Empirical Investigation Of Intrastate Conflicts Between 1989 And 2008, Ilker Kalin
Wayne State University Dissertations
Since the end of Cold War, more civil conflicts have been settled by negotiated settlements, as compared to previous eras. While the extant literature has offered various explanations of this trend by examining the costs and types of war, scholars’ primary focus has been on researching the determinants of conflict resolution. Yet, what brings the parties of civil conflicts to the negotiation table in the first place has remained largely unexplored. In particular, previous scholarship has failed to grasp negotiation as a process and costly choice in itself. This dissertation lays out the conditions paving the way for negotiations in …
A Comparison Of Discriminant Function Analysis And Logistic Regression By Categorizing The Incarcerated Mentally Ill, Mona King
Wayne State University Dissertations
Both discriminant function analysis (DFA) and logistic regression (LR) are used to classify subjects into a category/group based upon several explanatory variables (Liong & Foo, 2013). Although the two procedures are generally related, there is no clear advice in the statistical literature on when to use DFA vs. LR, although LR appears to be preferred due to the claim that its underlying assumptions are more easily met (Liong & Foo, 2013). Although DFA and LR use different methods to accomplish their objectives, they can answer the same research questions (Antonogeorgos et al., 2009). This facilitates a practical comparison of their …

Individualized Learning Plans And Performance Measurement, Management, And Improvement In Premedical Post Baccalaureate Education, Leah Michelle Robinson
Individualized Learning Plans And Performance Measurement, Management, And Improvement In Premedical Post Baccalaureate Education, Leah Michelle Robinson
Wayne State University Dissertations
Medical performance, what a physician can do accurately, repeatedly, and consistently is more significant than what they know. “Regardless of training, experience, or education, roughly 7% to 28% of medical trainees will require remediation in the form of an individualized learning plan to achieve competence” (Guerrasio, Garrity, & Aagaard, 2014, p. 352). Very little research on remediation for medical students, trainees, fellows, or practicing physicians exists in the literature. The available research focuses on specific skill attainment but lacks a standard methodology for identifying 1) those who are not competent and, 2) remediation strategies necessary to close deficiencies (Hauer, Ciccone, …
Acclimating To The Mayhem: Field Training Officer's Perspectives Of New Police Recruits From A Problem Based Learning Academy, Steven Amey
Wayne State University Dissertations
Field Training Officers (FTO) are the first line of observation when a new police recruit enters the work force from a training academy setting. Interviews into this area of research with FTO’s is minimal at best, specifically if any differences are noticed by FTO’s between problem-based learning trained academy recruits and those that are from a non-problem based learning training academy environment. This research study focuses on the perceptions that FTO’s observed with training new police officers and specifically what was exemplar and what was non-exemplar when it came to observations from FTO’s of new police officers. A qualitative approach …

Ethanol Autoignition Modeling And Validation At Wide Ranges Of Mixture Temperatures, Pressures, And Equivalence Ratios, Antowan Zyada
Wayne State University Dissertations
A new ethanol detailed kinetic model with 107 species and 1795 reactions was developed by using the reaction mechanism generator (RMG) and a thorough reaction path analysis. The mechanism model was extensively evaluated against measured ignition delay times, laminar flame speeds, and time-resolved species concentrations. The ignition delay experiments were conducted at pressures of 15, 20, and 30 bar, a temperature range of 850 to 1000 K, and equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 using an optically accessible rapid compression machine (RCM). The effect of oxygen concentration on the ignition delay at a fixed equivalence ratio was also measured …
A Numerical Study Of The Infix Percutaneous Anterior Pelvic Fixation: Analysis And Recommendations, Bridget Jo Volinski
A Numerical Study Of The Infix Percutaneous Anterior Pelvic Fixation: Analysis And Recommendations, Bridget Jo Volinski
Wayne State University Dissertations
Trauma to the pelvis is debilitating and often needs fixation intervention. In 58% of patients with this trauma, the injuries can lead to permanent disability, preventing the return to jobs. Of all unsuccessful fixation procedures, 42% are caused by failures of the method, sometimes due to mobilization during healing. The unstable anteroposterior compression fracture is of particular concern due to the blood loss into the increased pelvic volume with the pelvic ring fracture. External fixation was introduced for an expedient solution. This fixation has drawbacks such as few positions for the patient during healing and an increased chance of screw …
Proactive Coordination In Healthcare Service Systems Through Near Real-Time Analytics, Seung Yup Lee
Proactive Coordination In Healthcare Service Systems Through Near Real-Time Analytics, Seung Yup Lee
Wayne State University Dissertations
The United States (U.S.) healthcare system is the most expensive in the world. To improve the quality and safety of care, health information technology (HIT) is broadly adopted in hospitals. While EHR systems form a critical data backbone for the facility, we need improved 'work-flow' coordination tools and platforms that can enhance real-time situational awareness and facilitate effective management of resources for enhanced and efficient care. Especially, these IT systems are mostly applied for reactive management of care services and are lacking when they come to improving the real-time "operational intelligence" of service networks that promote efficiency and quality of …
Zwitterionic Polymer For Drug Delivery Applications, Yang Lu
Zwitterionic Polymer For Drug Delivery Applications, Yang Lu
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the applications of zwitterionic polymer materials in drug delivery. In one project, zwitterionic polymer was used to construct micelle surfactants. The zwitterionic micelles were found to have an ultralow critical micelle concentration (CMC). Potential mechanism for zwitterionic micelles achieving the ultralow CMC property has been studied. Based on the ultralow CMC feature, zwitterionic micelles were used to prepare a formulation of commercial antitumor drug docetaxel, and the resulting formulation showed excellent antitumor performance. In another project, zwitterionic polymer was used to modify protein drug insulin via conjugation reaction. Compared with current protein modification methods, such as …
Kilovoltage Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, Brian Loughery
Kilovoltage Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, Brian Loughery
Wayne State University Dissertations
Contrast enhanced kilovoltage radiotherapy could be a significant improvement over the standard of care in glioblastoma multiforme, but its potential benefit has been hindered by fears of insufficient dose falloff, high skin and skull dose, contrast delivery concerns, and high cost. This dissertation aims to address the validity of these fears.
Contrast delivery concerns are examined by assuming that sufficient dose can be safely delivered to the tumor. Iodine, gadolinium, and gold nanoparticle biological effect and delivery research is examined and the ideal contrast delivery methods are reported. Dose falloff and skull dose are then investigated through treatment planning and …
Sibling Victimization Predicted By Parent And Sibling Related Factors And Resilience As A Moderator Of Predicted School Engagement, Seth Roseman
Wayne State University Dissertations
The topic of bullying has been a focus of research for many decades. Largely conceptualized as a social phenomenon, research has been predominantly executed in the school or large group environments. More recent research has shifted the focus to the home environment. However, few studies have included both parent and sibling factors as predictors of victimization. The purpose of this study was to (1) examine correlations between victimization and perpetration at home and victimization and perpetration at school, (2) identify significant parent and sibling characteristics as predictors of sibling victimization, and (3) understand if resilience moderates the relationship between being …

Advisor: Dr. Jeremy Kodanko
Major: Chemistry
Degree: Doctor of Philosophy
Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes have been frequently employed in the caging and photorelease of biologically active compounds. Traditional photocaging groups derived from Ru(II) have been largely based on bi- or tridentate ancillary ligands, and those bearing ancillary ligands with high-denticities are yet to be developed. Exploring Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes possessing ancillary ligands with high-denticities provides insight into the photophysical and photochemical properties of ruthenium complexes, which creates novel prospects in the design of …
Switching Diffusion Systems With Past-Dependent Switching Having A Countable State Space, Hai Dang Nguyen
Switching Diffusion Systems With Past-Dependent Switching Having A Countable State Space, Hai Dang Nguyen
Wayne State University Dissertations
Emerging and existing applications in wireless communications, queueing networks, biological models, financial engineering, and social networks demand the
mathematical modeling and analysis of hybrid models in which continuous dynamics and discrete events coexist.
Assuming that the systems are in continuous times,
stemming from stochastic-differential-equation-based models and random discrete events,
switching diffusions come into being. In such systems, continuous states and discrete events
(discrete states)
coexist and interact.
A switching diffusion is a two-component process $(X(t),\alpha(t))$, a continuous component and a discrete component taking values in a discrete set (a set consisting of isolated points).
When the discrete component takes a …

Sexual Assault Stigmatization, Secrecy, And Avoidance: Implications For Health-Injurious Processes And Outcomes, Sheri E. Pegram
Wayne State University Dissertations
Previous research shows that women often experience stigmatization following sexual assau#60; however, few studies have investigated mechanisms through which stigmatization adversely affects health. In Study 1, women (N = 974) completed an online survey which assessed their history of sexual assault, stigmatization, recovery processes, and health outcomes. Results partially supported theoretical models whereby sexual assault survivors’ stigmatizing social reactions and internalized stigmatization indirectly contributed to physical health symptoms, hazardous drinking, and disordered eating through effects on secrecy, avoidance coping, thought suppression, and depressive symptoms. In Study 2, sexual assault survivors (N = 400) completed an online experimental study and were …
Investigation Of The In Vivo Activity Of Ribosome-Targeting Peptides And Aminoglycosides In Escherichia Coli, Nisansala Sarangi Thilakarathne Muthunayake
Investigation Of The In Vivo Activity Of Ribosome-Targeting Peptides And Aminoglycosides In Escherichia Coli, Nisansala Sarangi Thilakarathne Muthunayake
Wayne State University Dissertations
The development of short peptides that specifically bind to higher-order structures of ribosomal RNA is one promising way to address the problem of antibiotic resistance. However, the poor correlation between in vitro and in vivo activities of these peptides is one of the major questions in antibiotic peptide research. Therefore, one of the main objectives of this dissertation work was to utilize a plasmid-based system to in vivo express ribosome-targeting peptides and study their direct inhibitory effects on bacteria. A specific plasmid system was optimized to in vivo express oncocin, a prolin-rich antimicrobial peptide and its variants in bacteria. Our …

Doped And Chemically Transformed Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (Tmdcs) For Two-Dimensional (2d) Electronics, Sagar Prasad Paudel
Wayne State University Dissertations
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) as the semiconductor counterparts of gra-phene have emerged as promising channel materials for flexible electronic and optoelectronic devices. The 2D layer structure of TMDCs enables the ultimate scaling of TMDC-based devices down to atomic thickness. Furthermore, the absence of dangling bonds in these materials helps to form high quality heterostructures with ultra-clean interfaces. The main objective of this work is to develop novel approaches to fabricating TMDC-based 2D electronic devices such as diodes and transistors. In the first part, we have fabricated 2D p-n junction diodes through van der Waals assembly of heavily p-doped MoS2 (WSe2) …
Functional Study Of Smyd2 Glutathionylation In Cardiomyocytes, Dhanushka Nalin Perera Munkanatta Godage
Functional Study Of Smyd2 Glutathionylation In Cardiomyocytes, Dhanushka Nalin Perera Munkanatta Godage
Wayne State University Dissertations
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are important signaling molecules that contribute to the etiology of multiple muscle-related diseases, including cardiomyopathy and heart failure. There is emerging evidence that cellular stress can lead to destabilization of sarcomeres, the contractile unit of muscle. However, it is not completely understood how cellular stress or ROS induce structural destabilization of sarcomeres or myofibrils. Protein glutathionylation is one of the major protein cysteine oxidative modifications that play an important role in redox signaling and oxidative stress. In this report, we used a clickable glutathione approach in a cardiomyocyte cell line, and found that SET and MYND …

Learning Convolutional Neural Network For Face Verification, Elaheh Rashedi
Wayne State University Dissertations
Convolutional neural networks (ConvNet) have improved the state of the art in many applications. Face recognition tasks, for example, have seen a significantly improved performance due to ConvNets. However, less attention has been given to video-based face recognition. Here, we make three contributions along these lines.
First, we proposed a ConvNet-based system for long-term face tracking from videos. Through taking advantage of pre-trained deep learning models on big data, we developed a novel system for accurate video face tracking in the unconstrained environments depicting various people and objects moving in and out of the frame. In the proposed system, we …

Integrated Strategies For Sustainable Wastewater-Based Algal Biofuel Production And Environmental Mitigation In The Us, Javad Roostaei
Integrated Strategies For Sustainable Wastewater-Based Algal Biofuel Production And Environmental Mitigation In The Us, Javad Roostaei
Wayne State University Dissertations
Integration of algae cultivation with wastewater treatment has received increasing interest as a cost-effective strategy for biofuel production. However, there has been no full assessment of algal biofuel production with wastewater on macro-scale by taking into account wastewater resources, land availability, CO2 emission resources, and geographic variation. This research addressed and evaluated the use of wastewater for algae cultivation, in terms of modeling and laboratory experiments. The first goal of this research was to develop a spatially explicit lifecycle model, by integrating life cycle assessment (LCA), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis, for the evaluation of the environmental and economic …

Reliability Analysis By Considering Steel Physical Properties, Wujun Si
Wayne State University Dissertations
Most customers today are pursuing engineering materials (e.g., steel) that not only can achieve their expected functions but also are highly reliable. As a result, reliability analysis of materials has been receiving increasing attention over the past few decades. Most existing studies in the reliability engineering field focus on developing model-based and data-driven approaches to analyze material reliability based on material failure data such as lifetime data and degradation data, without considering effects of material physical properties. Ignoring such effects may result in a biased estimation of material reliability, which in turn could incur higher operation or maintenance costs.

Biochemical And Cellular Studies Of Apobec3 Family Dna-Cytosine Deaminases, Sachini Umedi Siriwardena
Biochemical And Cellular Studies Of Apobec3 Family Dna-Cytosine Deaminases, Sachini Umedi Siriwardena
Wayne State University Dissertations
The AID/APOBEC family of enzymes deaminate cytosines in single-stranded DNA to uracils leading to base substitutions and strand breaks. Members of APOBEC3 family in humans are induced by cytokines produced during the body's inflammatory response to infections and provide innate immunity against viruses. However, there is emerging consensus that these enzymes can cause mutations in the cellular genome depending on the physiological state of the cell and the phase of the cell cycle they are expressed. Since aberrant expression of APOBEC3B was recently identified as a possible source of cancer, we initiated a study to determine the maximally active catalytic …
Sexual Orientation Development, Acceptance, And Risk Behavior In Young Adult Gay Men, Erin Paige Smith
Sexual Orientation Development, Acceptance, And Risk Behavior In Young Adult Gay Men, Erin Paige Smith
Wayne State University Dissertations
Research on sexual orientation development points to individual differences in developmental milestones (i.e., realization, identification, disclosure to friend, disclosure to parent, same-sex sexual behavior) that could be differentially related to adjustment. Additionally, differences in perceptions of acceptance from the self and important others, such as parents and friends, during adolescence and early adulthood may be related to both sexual orientation development and health risk behaviors (i.e., substance use, sexual risk). The goal of the current study was to advance our understanding of developmental processes among gay men by examining perceived acceptance of sexual orientation and its associations with individual differences …
