Teacher And Parent Perspectives Of Including Preschool Children With Disabilities In General Education, Charissa Palazzo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act brought about initiatives to educate students with disabilities in mainstream settings as frequently as possible. Although the policy trend is moving toward inclusive education, preschool children with disabilities continue to be underrepresented in mainstream early childhood classes. This study was conducted to explore the perspectives of parents and teachers about the inclusion of preschool students with disabilities in general education classes. This qualitative case study was grounded in the social model of disability, which asserts that individuals with disabilities are hindered more by their environment than by their disability. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to explore parents’ perceptions of the use of mobile devices as tools for learning for their children in special education settings. Research literature on mobile-device use in special education indicates that little is known regarding parents’ perception of mlearning. While studies provided information on teachers’ perspectives of mlearning in their special education classrooms, parents’ perspectives on mlearning to support their children’s needs remained unexplored. The conceptual frameworks used included Rogers’s diffusion of innovation theory and Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s theory of parental involvement. Individual semistructured interviews of eight parents of elementary students in …

Perceptions Of Individualized Education Plan Involvement From Hispanic Parents And Special Education Teachers, Peace Ibeanusi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Some parents of children with disabilities do not often participate in individualized educational program (IEP) meetings, which results in inadequate planning and reduced student achievement. The aim of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of parent involvement in IEP meetings from Hispanic parents of English-language learners (ELLs) with disabilities and special educators. The research question pertained to the following elements central to parents’ involvement decisions: (a) parents’ beliefs, (b) self-efficacy, and (c) invitation for involvement. These elements were central in Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler’s parental involvement process model, which was the conceptual framework for the study. Using purposeful …

Investigating Active Learning In Inclusion And Resource Language Arts Classrooms, Haley Cooper

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

At the study site, middle school students with disabilities continue to demonstrate reading deficits. Because the lack of growth in the reading skills of students with disabilities has negative consequences for the students and for the school, it was paramount to investigate if the instructional design decisions made by teachers influence the reading growth of these students. The central purpose of this qualitative case study was to use the interactive-constructive-active-passive (ICAP) framework to analyze if teachers are assigning learning activities that compel students with disabilities to engage in active learning during reading instruction. Three research questions guided the investigation of …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Teaching In An Inclusive Classroom, Maya Johnstone

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Classroom teachers often experience feelings of ineffectiveness and struggle to meet the needs of students in the inclusion classroom setting within the local school district. Guided by Bandura’s self-efficacy theory, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate elementary teachers’ perceptions of their confidence to teach in the inclusive classroom. Semistructured interviews with a purposeful sample of 7 elementary inclusion teachers (3 general education teachers; 4 special education teachers) from the local district were conducted. Data analysis using open and axial coding revealed 7 emergent themes: (a) need for inclusion-specific professional development and training on differentiated instruction, (b) …
