Iraqi Prisoners In Norway: Educational Background, Participation, Preferences And Barriers To Education, Kariane Westrheim, Terje Manger
Iraqi Prisoners In Norway: Educational Background, Participation, Preferences And Barriers To Education, Kariane Westrheim, Terje Manger
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
The article aimed to develop knowledge of the educational background, participation and preferences of Iraqi prisoners in Norwegian prisons and obstacles to participating in education. The study is based on interviews with 17 prisoners in three prisons. An important finding is that war and political unrest appear to have been significant causes for respondents to leaving education at various stages. As a result only half of them have as much as one final exam and only three respondents have a certificate of education. Even if the respondents want an education while in prison, and although education is offered in all …
Identities, Education And Reentry: Performative Spaces And Enclosures, Randall Wright
Identities, Education And Reentry: Performative Spaces And Enclosures, Randall Wright
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This is part one of a two-part interdisciplinary paper that examines the various forces (discourses and institutional processes) that shape prisoner-student identities. Discourses of officers from a correctional website serve as a limited, single case study of discourses that ascribe dehumanized, stigmatized identities to "the prisoner." Two critical concepts, performative spaces and identity enclosures, are purposed as potential critical, emancipatory terms to explore the prisoner-student identity work that occurs in schools and elsewhere in prison. This paper is guided by the effort to assist teachers to act as transformative intellectuals in prisons and closed-custody settings by becoming more aware of …
Waking Up In Prison: Critical Discussions Between Typical College Students And Their Incarcerated Peers, Tabitha Dell'angelo
Waking Up In Prison: Critical Discussions Between Typical College Students And Their Incarcerated Peers, Tabitha Dell'angelo
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This article describes a typical college course that was taught in a youth correctional facility. The course combined traditional college students and inmates from the prison. Over the course of 15 weeks both groups grew to understand one another and themselves. The article seeks to illustrate the realities related both to fear and success in such an undertaking. This collaborative model between colleges and correctional facilities has promise as a model for prison education.

I offer a cloud of observations about language and art. I will prioritize my questions about how language operates in art, the way it functions within my own studio practice, and locate aesthetic interstices throughout. There will be insights gleaned from the various orderers of order (Lacan, Saussure) and orderers of disorder (Derrida, Agamben), walks in terra-incognita, and even some poetry on my part. I will take this chance to orient myself among different structures and deconstructions that have piledup around language, aesthetics and art.
Mandibular Incisor Proclination Variability During Class Ii Correction, James Redford
Mandibular Incisor Proclination Variability During Class Ii Correction, James Redford
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Lower incisor proclination has been shown to increase during Class II correction with appliances such as the Forsus. This lower incisor flaring shows great variability among patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Class II severity, mandibular growth, and occlusal plane rotation on lower incisor flaring in patients treated with the Forsus appliance. Materials and Methods: 121 records of Class II patients treated with the Forsus appliance were analyzed retrospectively. Cephalograms were traced at three time points. ANOVA was used to compare changes in cephalometric measurements over time. Pearson’s correlation was used to test …
Thinking Bodies And Sensational Minds: Affect And Embodiment In Contemporary Art, Sandra Burke
Thinking Bodies And Sensational Minds: Affect And Embodiment In Contemporary Art, Sandra Burke
Theses and Dissertations
The human subject is profoundly interdependent, in relation to other people and to the surrounding environment, both “natural” and technological. Western dualistic thinking creates bounded and oppositional categories and generates a conception of human subjects as autonomous, self-sufficient beings that are transparent to themselves and in control of self, other, and world. This contributes to the ongoing inequalities in society and supports normative hegemony. This dissertation argues that it is imperative to insist on the intersubjective, permeable, and contingent qualities of existence. While this project is preceded by a great deal of theoretical criticism of Western metaphysical dualism, we must …

The Reporting Of Supplement Use By Dental Patients On Their Medical History Questionnaire, Sarmad Bakuri
Theses and Dissertations
The Reporting of Supplement Use by Dental Patients on Their Medical History Questionnaire Objectives: The goals of the study were three fold. Estimate the prevalence of supplement use by dental patients. Determine if the design of a medical history form influences the prevalence of supplement use reported. Determine whether or not patients are aware of supplement side effects and interactions with medications. Methods: Patients were randomly allocated to either a standard medical history form or the same form with additional questions about supplement use. After completing the initial forms, a survey containing questions about supplements was filled out by both …
Threshold, Marisa Finos
Threshold, Marisa Finos
Theses and Dissertations
Are the threshold experiences encountered between waking and sleeping similar to the liminal space between life and death? The sights, sounds, and bodily sensations experienced in the unconscious void blur the lines between the unknown and our conscious existence. Using the figure, I portray how the body might exist in these transitional moments. Through my investigations into sleep paralysis, dream states, and notions of an afterlife and the soul, I explore how we perceive the self in these altered states of consciousness.

The Undermining Of Females In Video Games, Samuel West
Undergraduate Research Posters
Video games as a form of entertainment have been rapidly evolving over the past few decades. Female presence in video games has grown exponentially along side this evolution. This paper focuses on how women are presented in games, the roles that they play within the games and their physicality while performing leadership roles. Scholarly articles have been analyzed on topics including the design of cover art used to sell games, the part that women play in the storyline, the physical nature of women in video games, and the effects sexualized women can have on the gamers. Women have matured from …
Parental Perceptions And Experiences Of Physical And Emotional Violence Between Siblings: A Mixed-Methods, Comparative Case Study, Nathan Perkins
Parental Perceptions And Experiences Of Physical And Emotional Violence Between Siblings: A Mixed-Methods, Comparative Case Study, Nathan Perkins
Theses and Dissertations
Sibling violence is a common occurrence for many children yet this form of family violence has received minimal attention in research compared to other forms of child maltreatment. With parents as an integral component in the lives of many children, parental perceptions and experiences of violence between siblings are important to understand. Furthermore, with the increased variation in family structures within society, inclusion of multiple types of families in research is necessary to encompass a broad understanding of sibling violence. This case study included seven parents from four different family structures to examine their perceptions and experiences of physical and …
Hybrid Gulf — Excavating Future Identities, Robert Canak
Hybrid Gulf — Excavating Future Identities, Robert Canak
Theses and Dissertations
This Project examines the coexistence of two cultures?–?in this case the host Gulf, and the imported Western?–?and addresses certain problems that still need attention. This Project celebrates the creation of the third, hybrid, culture as a result of their intermingling. In this Research, Postcolonial Theory? and Transitional Object Theory? are used as conceptual frameworks, and are combined with Archaeology and Design as a practice. On a personal level, the Project evolved out of my cross-cultural origin and experiences. On an academic level, the Project serves as an experiment, trying to fill the gaps in the Gulf region’s search for identity. …
Relationship Of Mitochondrial Enzymes To Fatigue Intensity And Health-Related Quality Of Life In Men With Prostate Cancer Receiving External Beam Radiation Therapy, Kristin Filler
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Cancer-related fatigue is often described by patients as a lack of energy, mental or physical tiredness, diminished endurance, and prolonged recovery after activity. Etiologic mechanisms underlying CRF are not well understood. Methods: A literature review was conducted to examine studies that had investigated the association of mitochondrial dysfunction with fatigue. The major conclusion from this review was that alterations in energy metabolism may contribute to fatigue. Therefore, the dissertation study focused on laboratory techniques for measuring mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation enzymes (complexes I-V) and a mitochondrial-specific oxidative stress marker (superoxide dismutase 2 [SOD2]). The primary aim of the dissertation research …
Crossing Boundaries: Building A Model To Effectively Address Difference In Community Practice, Jason Sawyer
Crossing Boundaries: Building A Model To Effectively Address Difference In Community Practice, Jason Sawyer
Theses and Dissertations
Community organizing has a rich tradition within the field of social work. Prevailing community practice models, approaches, and frameworks remain primarily based on practice wisdom, experience, and intuition. Difference, pervasive in various contemporary contexts of practice, largely mediates interactions at the community level. Although difference is addressed at various levels of the practice continuum and within the IFSW and NASW codes of ethics, few methodologically driven tools exist within the literature to guide practitioners. This grounded theory study initiates early development of a community practice model based on forging alliances across boundaries of difference. The Critical Difference Engagement model is …

Factors Contributing To Infant Feeding Practices With Latina Mothers, Diana Cartagena
Theses and Dissertations
Background: An estimated 9.7% of U.S. infants and toddlers are considered overweight. Hispanic infants persistently show higher prevalence rates for being overweight compared to black and white infants. Little is known about factors promoting excessive infant weight gain in Latinos. Purpose: Primary aim of this study was to describe multidimensional factors and maternal feeding practices that may correlate with infant overfeeding in Latina mothers. A secondary aim was to determine whether there was an association between these factors and infant weight gain. Subjects: Sixty-two low-income immigrant Latina mothers and their infants ages 4-12 months receiving assistance through the Special Supplemental …
Structural Alterations To The Axon Initial Segment Following Diffuse Axonal Injury As A Consequence Of Age, William Behl
Structural Alterations To The Axon Initial Segment Following Diffuse Axonal Injury As A Consequence Of Age, William Behl
Theses and Dissertations
An epidemiological shift towards the elderly population has occurred in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Age is believed to be one of the strongest prognostic indicators following TBI. Diffuse axonal injury (DAI), a prevalent feature of TBI, is believed to be the primary cause for much of the morbidity and mortality associated with TBI. The pathobiology associated with DAI is believed to occur in response to the primary injury in a progressive, secondary fashion. Though the injury mechanisms behind DAI have been shown to occur at numerous sites along the axon, recent work suggests that the axon initial segment (AIS) may …
Lynn Riggs: Forgotten Genius, Jason Michael
Lynn Riggs: Forgotten Genius, Jason Michael
Theses and Dissertations
Lynn Riggs was an early to mid-20th century Native American playwright who wrote twenty-four full length plays, his sole enduring success being Green Grow the Lilacs, the play upon which the musical Oklahoma! is based. For much of the early part of Riggs’s career, he was considered a uniquely pioneering and promising playwright, cited in competition with Eugene O’Neill as vying for the position of best playwright of their age. But while O’Neill has gone on to be considered America’s Greatest Playwright, the life and works of Lynn Riggs, save for his contribution to Rodgers and Hammerstein, have gone largely …
Queeranimal Imaginary: An Intra-Active Investigation Of Ecology, Performance, And Sound, Caryn Brissey
Queeranimal Imaginary: An Intra-Active Investigation Of Ecology, Performance, And Sound, Caryn Brissey
Theses and Dissertations
Through interrelated experiments in writing, video, sound, and movement, this research investigates the intersections of intimacy, ecology, and performance. Integrating an autoethnographic approach to gender and sexuality with creative practice and theoretical inquiry, this layered investigation offers implications that are both deeply personal and widely accessible. I am using my own experiences growing up as a queer child to generative corporeal and experience-based material, while also incorporating the ideas of current queer and gender theorists to frame my own research within the larger context of feminist studies. This research culminated into an evening length performance at Dogtown Dance Theatre on …
Necessary Movements, Janelle Proulx
Necessary Movements, Janelle Proulx
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis follows the trajectory of my artistic practice over the past two years which has led me to the creation of the installation REVERB. While incorporating performance, installation, and video into my modes of creation, I’ve likewise expanded my conceptual research regarding the influential capabilities of touch, gesture, and environment. By focusing on the relationship of REVERB to a broader discussion regarding these themes, I hope to situate the work among its art, cultural, and scientific referents.
The Division Of Family Work Among Fathers And Mothers Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder: Implications For Parents And Family Functioning, Paula L. Ogston-Nobile
The Division Of Family Work Among Fathers And Mothers Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder: Implications For Parents And Family Functioning, Paula L. Ogston-Nobile
Theses and Dissertations
n often ignored aspect of parenting and family work is the responsibility-related caregiving (i.e. the monitoring, arranging, and planning) that is done to ensure that a child is cared for. Among fathers and mothers who have a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the intensity of meeting these needs is greater than for a typically developing child (e.g. additional coordination of schooling, interventions, healthcare, recreation, respite, and after-school services). As is the case for all parents, they must also attend to the demands of household labor (e.g. car maintenance, groceries, laundry, yard care), nurture their relationships (e.g. partner, friends, …
