A Space-Based Solar Screen Against Climatic Warming, Michael Noah Mautner
A Space-Based Solar Screen Against Climatic Warming, Michael Noah Mautner
Chemistry Publications
The expected global warming may be reversed by space-based screen that would intercept a fraction of the solar radiation incident on Earth. Warming by 2-5oC could be prevented by intercepting 3-7%, respectively, of the incident solar radiation. The screen may be constructed for example of a thin film, a grid of film supported by a mesh or fine-grained dust deployed in orbit about the Earth. For an average film thickness or particle radius of 0.001 cm, the required mass is 1014 - 1015 g, equivalent to a medium sized lunar mountain or asteroid. The material may …

Efficacy And Cost-Effectiveness Of Adjuvant Chemotherapy In Women With Node-Negative Breast-Cancer - A Decision-Analysis Model, Bruce E. Hillner , M.D., Thimas J. Smith M. D.
Efficacy And Cost-Effectiveness Of Adjuvant Chemotherapy In Women With Node-Negative Breast-Cancer - A Decision-Analysis Model, Bruce E. Hillner , M.D., Thimas J. Smith M. D.
Internal Medicine Publications
BACKGROUND.
In 1988 the National Cancer Institute issued a Clinical Alert that has been widely interpreted as recommending that all women with node-negative breast cancer receive adjuvant chemotherapy. Acceptance of this recommendation is controversial, since many women who would not have a recurrence would be treated.
METHODS.
Using a decision-analysis model, we studied the cost effectiveness of chemotherapy in cohorts of 45-year-old and 60-year-old women with node-negative breast cancer by calculating life expectancy as adjusted for quality of life. The analysis evaluated different scenarios of the benefit of therapy: improved disease-free survival for five years, with a lesser effect on …

Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science Publications
The impact of renal insufficiency on the dispositions of 300 mg of orally administered ceftibuten-cis, a new broad-spectrum oral cephalosporin, and its primary metabolite ceftibuten-trans was characterized in 30 adult subjects. Subjects were divided into five groups of six subjects each on the basis of their 24-h ambulatory creatinine clearances (CLCR). The apparent total body clearance (CLP/F; where F is absolute bioavailability) and renal clearance of ceftibuten-cis were significantly lower in subjects with end-stage renal disease (on maintenance hemodialysis; group V) and in those with severe (CLCR, 5 …

CyanoNews
CyanoNews was a newsletter that served the cyanobacteriological community from 1985 to 2003, with content provided by readers (sort of a blog before there were blogs). The newsletter reported new findings from the lab, summaries of recent meetings (often provided by graduate students and post-docs entering the field), positions sought or available, life transitions, a compendium of recent cyanobacteria-related articles, and other items of interest to those who study cyanobacteria.

Observation Of Eliminative Cationic Polymerization Within Van Der Waals Clusters, M. Samy El-Shall, K. E. Schriver
Observation Of Eliminative Cationic Polymerization Within Van Der Waals Clusters, M. Samy El-Shall, K. E. Schriver
Chemistry Publications
We report the first observation of eliminative cationic polymerization within van der Waals (vdW) clusters following electron impact ionization at pressures of 10−8 Torr. The elimination reactions of C2H3Cl+ within the clusters terminate after three successive steps, each involving elimination of HCl or Cl. The results provide a mechanism for the early stages of gas phase cationic polymerization of vinyl chloride and demonstrate the feasibility of using vdW clusters as a means of studying gas phase cationic polymerization.
A Double Chain Of Coupled Circuits In Analogy With Mechanical Lattices, J. N. Boyd, P. N. Raychowdhury
A Double Chain Of Coupled Circuits In Analogy With Mechanical Lattices, J. N. Boyd, P. N. Raychowdhury
Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Publications
A unitary transformation obtained from group theoretical considerations is applied to the problem of finding the resonant frequencies of a system of coupled LC-circuits. This transformation was previously derived to separate the equations of motion for one dimensional mechanical lattices. Computations are performed in matrix notation. The electrical system is an analog of a pair of coupled linear lattices. After the resonant frequencies have been found, comparisons between the electrical and mechanical systems are noted.
