Aspects Of The Becker Brewing And Malting Company Of Ogden, Utah: A Study Of Labor, Prohibition, And Finance, Jason Neil

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Embedded within the economic narrative of the nineteenth and twentieth century American West lays the rich, but frequently forgotten, history of brewing in Utah. While most businesses in Utah centered on agriculture, railroads, and mining, the breweries of Utah also played a significant role in the industrial and economic development of the region. One of the largest and most significant of these breweries was the Becker Brewing and Malting Company of Ogden, Utah. Founded in 1892, this company deeply affected the brewing industry until its dissolution in 1965. Many of the original records kept by the company still exist and …

The Industry And Occupation Incidence Of State Mandated Maternity Benefits, Adam Bahr Aug 2018

The Industry And Occupation Incidence Of State Mandated Maternity Benefits, Adam Bahr

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Government mandates are often used to promote equality in the workplace, often imposing additional costs upon employers. Economic theory suggest that these additional costs will be shifted onto the employees through a reduction in wages. However, when wage shifting is not an option due to anti-discrimination laws, how will employers respond to the additional costs imposed? Gruber (1994) found that wage shifting occurs when the groups benefiting from a government mandate are easily identifiable to the employer, despite the existence of anti-discrimination laws.

This study seeks to further the work of Gruber (1994) and examine wage shifting at an industry …

Nature & Nation: The Civilian Conservation Corps In Zion And Bryce Canyon National Parks, Valerie Jacobson Aug 2017

Nature & Nation: The Civilian Conservation Corps In Zion And Bryce Canyon National Parks, Valerie Jacobson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

CCC experiences have been written about other camps and areas across the United States, however, an in depth look at the CCC involvement in Zion and Bryce has not been attempted. The CCC camps in Zion and Bryce created a mark on the landscape through the projects and improvements, but also left a mark on the “boys” who were in the program. The experiences and projects the young men did with the CCC altered the land in the parks in southern Utah. The changes included new or improved trail systems in the park, better roads and maintenance, soil and erosion …

“The Workingman Of Nazareth”: Representations Of Jesus As Laborer In The Masses (1911-1917), The Politics Of Jesus’ Profession, And Historical Jesus Debates, Michael Casey W. Woolf Apr 2014

“The Workingman Of Nazareth”: Representations Of Jesus As Laborer In The Masses (1911-1917), The Politics Of Jesus’ Profession, And Historical Jesus Debates, Michael Casey W. Woolf

Intermountain West Journal of Religious Studies

From 1911-1917 a Socialist magazine called The Masses published art, essays, and poetry that aimed to support and foment class struggle in the United States. While their work was not primarily religious, from time to time authors chose to depict Jesus as an agent of class struggle. This paper focuses on these occasions, discussing how images of Jesus as union member and “workingman” are used to promote the magazine’s aims. Finally, this paper uses The Masses’ depictions of Jesus as a touchstone for analyzing some current debates within historical Jesus scholarship and argues for The Masses’ Jesus to be taken …

Farmer, Miner, Ranger, Writer: Interpreting Class And Work In The Writing Of Wendell Berry And Edward Abbey, Tyler Austin Nickl Aug 2012

Farmer, Miner, Ranger, Writer: Interpreting Class And Work In The Writing Of Wendell Berry And Edward Abbey, Tyler Austin Nickl

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study compares some of the essays and novels of two well known, environmental writers: Wendell Berry and Edward Abbey. Usually, these writers are discussed for their environmental politics and representations of nature, but this study examines the ways in which each of these writers discusses class and manual labor. This aspect of Abbey’s and Berry’s works has not yet received the attention it deserves. With this focus in mind, I make the following conclusions: 1) An author’s view of society (as expressed by their opinions of class and socioeconomic status) necessarily affects their view of nature. 2) Berry’s occupational …

Three Essays On Labor Force Participation Rates Among The Fifty States, With Empirical Tests Using Panel Data, John D. Groesbeck

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This dissertation examined the theoretical foundations of an individual's labor force participation decision. Further, this dissertation provided empirical analysis of the impact of state tax rates, the duration of unemployment, and household size on male, female, and combined labor force participation rates of the fifty states from 1985 to 1990. Empirical tests showed that: 1) no significant relationship existed between tax variables and participation rates; 2) the duration of unemployment was positively related with participation rates while unemployment was negatively related; 3) service sector growth was positively correlated with longer durations of unemployment; and 4) household size was negatively related …

Economic Determinants Of Rural-Urban Labor Migration: The Case Of Korea, Hong Youl Park May 1975

Economic Determinants Of Rural-Urban Labor Migration: The Case Of Korea, Hong Youl Park

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Though it is conceded that the major stream of migration in developing countries flows from rural to urban areas, research on identifying the principle determinants of rural-urban migration are quite scarce. This is especially so in quantitative terms. Therefore, hypotheses concerning the economic determinants of rural-urban migration are investigated and economic impact of rural-urban migration is also examined in this dissertation.

Migration can be viewed from many different perspectives -- selectivities, pull and push, human investment approaches, etc. However, this study follows economic tradition and views migration in a general equilibrium context. In the economic opportunity hypothesis, discrepancies of factor …
