Effects Of The Checks, Andrew Stott Dec 2021

Effects Of The Checks, Andrew Stott

Fall Student Research Symposium 2021

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of people have lost thousands of dollars, and some much more. As a result, the government issued aid in the form of stimulus checks, with the intention to stimulate the economy and compensate for money lost. The government is not adding value to the economy, but merely moving it around, and in many cases simply making it worse. The checks allude to an even bigger issue: that of universal income and welfare checks. Although these things may be helpful to the individual, they are ineffective and harmful to the economy because they …

Women Leaders In Utah Government–Their Paths To Power, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen Nov 2020

Women Leaders In Utah Government–Their Paths To Power, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

When both men and women work together in leadership roles, organizations thrive. This holds true for government—and democratic governance processes in general—and it supports the call to reflect gender diversity at all levels. Yet, typical conversations about women in government often focus on the need for women to run for elected office. While this is certainly important, little if no attention has been given to the lack of women leaders within the halls of government. In response to this, Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) researchers recently conducted pioneering research resulting in three research briefs that, for the first time, …

The Status Of Women Leaders In Government–Utah Cities And Towns, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen, D. Candice Backus Pierucci, Brooke Smith

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Research shows that communities and organizations increasingly thrive when men and women work together in leadership roles. Gender inclusivity benefits not only businesses, churches, schools, and state legislatures, but also state and local governments. American democracy is grounded in the idea of representation. “Representative bureaucracy” is the term for government entities employing a workforce that shares the demographic characteristics of the communities they serve, and the combined experiences and perspectives of that workforce represent and benefit all residents within its purview. This includes the thousands of government professionals who run the daily functions of municipalities within the State of Utah.

The Status Of Women Leaders In Government–Utah Counties, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Recent events underscore the need for government—and democratic governance processes in general—to embrace diversity at all levels. Organizations with diverse leadership teams, including both women and men, have proven to be more innovative and resilient, make better strategic decisions, and have an increased capacity for problem solving. The benefits of gender equity can be found in any organization, including government structures such as state legislatures, city councils, and state and local bureaucracies.

The Influence Of Threatened State Preemption On City Council Voting Behavior And Municipal Broadband, Dillon P. Corbridge May 2017

The Influence Of Threatened State Preemption On City Council Voting Behavior And Municipal Broadband, Dillon P. Corbridge

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relationship between city and state government has been contentious at times throughout American history. Cities only have the legal authority granted to them by state government, yet many cities have cause to seek policy that may not be in the interest of those who govern the state. Leaders of American states may choose to preempt municipal authority by removing the legal power of a city to perform certain actions. While preemption provides states with a tool for regulating the policies and practices that cities may pursue, it is unclear whether city leaders act cautiously to avoid preemption, or instead …

Games Governments Play: An Analysis Of National Environmental Policy In An Open Economy, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal Jan 1999

Games Governments Play: An Analysis Of National Environmental Policy In An Open Economy, Amitrajeet A. Batabyal

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

In this paper we study some of the consequences of national environmental policy in a strategic international setting. Two broad questions are analyzed. First, we examine the circumstances under which the pursuit of environmental policy by a country in a Cournot game, will make that country worse off when the incidence of pollution is domestic. Second, we study the effects of environmental regulation by means of alternate price control instruments in a Cournot game in which national governments care about international pollution, but polluting firms do not. It is shown that there are plausible theoretical circumstances in which the pursuit …

The Impacts Of Privatization And Government Intervention In The Economy: An Empirical Analysis (Two Essays), Tayseer Al-Sumadi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In this dissertation, we provide empirical assessment of government involvement in economic activities. This assessment is done within the framework of a two-part strategy. In the first part, we evaluate the effects of the government size on the overall rate of economic growth of a group of 30 developing countries. This approach can be regarded as macroeconomic in the sense that the economywide growth is the subject of investigation. In the second part, we conducted a comparative study of technical efficiency between privately owned and publicly owned companies in the international oil industry. We refer to this approach as microeconomic …

The Effect Of Government Size On Economic Performance: An Empirical Investigation On A Group Of Developing Countries Using A Panel Data Approach, Tayseer Al-Sumadi, Basudeb Biswas

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper examines the effect of government size, measured by the ratio of government consumption expenditures to gross domestic product, GDP, on the rate of growth of per capita GDP. Our sample includes 30 low-income and middle-income developing countries over the period 1970-90. We use a panel data approach to avoid the shortcomings of the cross-country models often used in such an analysis. The results indicate government size has a highly significant negative influence on the rate of economic growth. /

History Of The Forty-Second Parallel As A Political Boundary Between Utah And Idaho, Nancy Bergeson May 1983

History Of The Forty-Second Parallel As A Political Boundary Between Utah And Idaho, Nancy Bergeson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The original purpose of this paper was to discover why Cache County, Utah at one time taxed towns now located in the State of Idaho. Later, it became apparent that a history of the forty-second parallel was necessary to fully understand the reasoning used by both the Federal and local governments in setting up the political boundaries of Utah and Cache County. Therefore, it was necessary to research the records of the Federal Government, Cache County Government, the LDS Journal History, and diaries of residents of Cache and Bear Lake Valleys, as well as detailed accounts of Spanish and Mexican …

He first served on the Louisi.ana frontier as a military officer, and in time rose to become governor of that province. …

The Role Of The Federal Government In The Industrial Expansion Of Utah During World War Two, Anthony Thomas Cluff May 1964

The Role Of The Federal Government In The Industrial Expansion Of Utah During World War Two, Anthony Thomas Cluff

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For ten years the American economy had been depressed. Unemployment haunted economic planners, low production plagued manufacturers, low incomes impoverished wage earners, and everyone hoped for the dawn of new prosperity. It was as if recovery had waited for an untrodden decade to arrive before heralding the new day. The New Deal brought Social Security for old age, insurance for bank deposits, new guarantees for labor, and a score of public work projects, but it did not bring economic recovery.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the evening of January 13, 1941, Herbert B. Maw, who was then beginning his first term as Governor of the state of Utah, addressed his first legislative message to a joint session of the 1941 Utah Legislature from the rostrum of the chamber of the House of Representatives. An overwhelming amount of the Governor's message was devoted to a multifaceted topic, the reorganization of Utah's state administration.

After extensively deploring state structural and political organization as it existed at that time, Governor Maw declared:

The plan which I shall now propose is a product of the recommendations of the …

Their confines would take in Weber, Rich, Box Elder, Cache, and part of Morgan, counties in Utah; and Bear Lake, …
