Hearing Nothing, Brittany Nelson
Hearing Nothing, Brittany Nelson
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Utah State prides itself in its services for students, but recently those services have made negative headlines. Deaf students have filed a lawsuit against the university complaining about the lack of sign language interpreters. But some complain that they are still hearing or seeing no response.
For my Thesis Project, I produced a documentary highlighting the problem both here on our campus, and on a statewide and even nationwide level. I researched the issues, conducted interviews, wrote the script, taped all video and edited the video. The 20 minute documentary was shown publicly on campus in an effort to make …

Also compiled were several other optional materials that may be used as supplements to the aforementioned set of materials or as a means to briefly cover lean accounting in another course if so desired. This paper contains a brief summary of lean …
A Comparison Of The Amely Gene Sequence In Argali (Ovis Ammon) And Domestic (Ovis Aries) Sheep, Kimberly Elwood
A Comparison Of The Amely Gene Sequence In Argali (Ovis Ammon) And Domestic (Ovis Aries) Sheep, Kimberly Elwood
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Amelogenin (AMEL) is a gene responsible for tooth bud development. It is located on the X-chromosome, thus called AMELX, in mammals. AMEL has been shown to be present in fish, amphibians, and reptiles, though the exact location on the chromosome has not been determined. Amelogenin-like gene (AMELY), an AMEL homolog encoded on the Y-chromosome in some mammals, including sheep, cattle, deer, bears, humans, and some primates, is shorter than the sequence on the X-chromosome. It is unknown whether AMELY is transcriptionally active, but it has been found to be useful for human sexing purposes in forensics, archaeology and prenatal diagnosis, …

Moving Object Tracking: Seeking Extensible Solutions, Jeremy Pack
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Moving object tracking is a difficult field with no "best" solution. The documents contained here detail software that was developed in order to perform tracking of objects that are in the line of sight of multiple cameras. Some of the software developed is already in use by the US Army Dugway Proving Ground. Other software represents prototype or early development code. This software was written by Jeremy Pack, who was the lead programmer, and Luke Andrew at the Space Dynamics Laboratory in Logan, Utah.
After-Schools Programs And Their Influence On Parent Involvement With Children At Home, Marci Malone
After-Schools Programs And Their Influence On Parent Involvement With Children At Home, Marci Malone
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Eight-year-old Victoria, with hands on hips and chin stuck up, defiantly said, "No mom, I want to stay for After-School Club. I don't care about the dentist." Her mother patiently responded by telling Victoria, "I know you want to stay but we have to leave now or we will be late for our appointment." The little girl, seeming to know from experience that her mother would not budge, stomped her foot as she began leaving the school saying, "I hate when I have to miss After-School Club!"
A Sedimentation Study Of The Green River Irrigation Canal, Green River, Utah, Jan Michael Miller
A Sedimentation Study Of The Green River Irrigation Canal, Green River, Utah, Jan Michael Miller
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This sedimentation study of the Green River irrigation canal provides the Green River Canal Company (GRCC) with a detailed aerial map of the Green River irrigation canal system to allow operators to quickly and accurately locate canal structures. Also, an Excel spreadsheet accounting model was created which provides the GRCC with the ability to determine where sedimentation likely occurs throughout the canal under given conditions. This model must be operated within set guidelines to provide reliable results and should be calibrated for increased accuracy. It was determined that with no irrigation (i.e., with no canal structures open except for the …
A Comparison Of Four-Step Model And Path Flow Estimator For Forecasting Network Flow: A Case Study Of Cache County In Utah, Siddareddy B. Pedaballi
A Comparison Of Four-Step Model And Path Flow Estimator For Forecasting Network Flow: A Case Study Of Cache County In Utah, Siddareddy B. Pedaballi
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Development of alternative methodologies for travel demand modeling has become important in recent years due to the lack of resources for small and medium communities to adopt conventional four step travel models. Many researchers have proposed alternative tools of travel demand modeling for these communities. But majority of them still require large amount of data and technical sophistication.
In this study, the Path Flow Estimator (PFE) is used to estimate the network traffic of Cache County. PFE estimations are based on the collected traffic counts, vehicle production and attractions of zones estimated using Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) trip generation …
Juvenile Drug Courts: Using Participant Characteristics To Predict Outcome, Sara M. Boghosian
Juvenile Drug Courts: Using Participant Characteristics To Predict Outcome, Sara M. Boghosian
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Juvenile drug courts are becoming an increasingly popular answer to rising rates of substance use-related crime among adolescents in the U.S. However, outcome evidence for the efficacy of juvenile drug courts is limited at this time. Currently, approximately 50% of juvenile drug court participants do not graduate from drug court programs nationwide. However, the nongraduates are believed to have a poor prognosis following termination from drug court. The purpose of this study was to determine if participant characteristics are related to outcome in juvenile drug courts. Neither demographic variables (age, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status) nor substance use variables (age at …

Results revealed the expressive writing intervention significantly impacted positive affect over time. Furthermore, participants from both the treatment and …
Examination Of The Issues And Scientific Evidence For The Identification Process Of Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Individuals With Learning Disabilities To Enhance Academic Outcomes, Scot Ferre
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Although the identification of learning disabilities (LD) is a viable means to provide appropriate
instructional and support services for students with academic difficulties, there is a limited
knowledge base about the identification, assessment, and intervention of and for LD in deaf and
hard of hearing (D/HH) students. Given the potential consequences of test results, this review
examined current and recent developments in the field of learning disabilities concerning the
conceptualization of learning disability and the validity and empirical support of earlier
identification methods and various assessment identification options with D/HH students.
Challenges to the process and the need for additional …
Turning Points And Protective Processes: A Qualitative Study On Resilient Youth Through Their Perspective As Resilient Adults, Michael E. Monson
Turning Points And Protective Processes: A Qualitative Study On Resilient Youth Through Their Perspective As Resilient Adults, Michael E. Monson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study investigates the processes of resiliency and the turning points of decision-making in youth from at-risk environments. The study utilizes a constructivist, qualitative approach, to examine indicators of resiliency from both an individual and contextual perspective. The narrative descriptions of eleven adults from at-risk childhoods are analyzed through biographical interviews.
Analyses were completed to determine common factors that contribute to the process of resiliency in successful adults. Results indicate that the influences of risk on healthy functioning are modified by shifting environmental protective factors, resources, and developed attributes of self-efficacy. Risk and adversity had a strengthening effect that contributed …
Vascular Plant Species Richness And Distribution In A Heterogeneous Landscape, Kelly J. Mccloskey
Vascular Plant Species Richness And Distribution In A Heterogeneous Landscape, Kelly J. Mccloskey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The distribution of vascular plant species and species richness in a mid-elevation Rocky Mountain landscape can be attributed to a number of variables. The distribution of species with respect to physiognomic type, patch size, shape, and environmental heterogeneity was assessed for a mosaic landscape comprised of conifer forest, deciduous forest, and shrub-steppe physiognomic types in the southwest comer of Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. This vegetation is representative of that found in other montane landscapes of the central Rocky Mountains. The vegetation was mapped to physiognomic type; distinct vegetation patches were sampled using one or more small (50 m2 …
Remapping The Cliff Chipmunk (Neotamias Dorsalis) Distribution And Creating A Habitat Association Model In Southern Idaho, Masako Niwa
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The distribution of the cliff chipmunk in Idaho was previously considered to include only the Raft River Valley and the Goose Creek Basin. A pilot study was conducted in 2003 and 2004. Thirty-five cliff chipmunk presence locations and 124 absence locations were recorded. Habitat variables of elevation, slope, deviation from south, distance to water, and vegetation type were extracted for all of the absence and presence points by means of GIS analysis. The data were analyzed by implementing a classification tree, and a "GIS habitat association model" was created. The model was tested in 2005, and the overall model accuracy …
Tapirs And Rhinoceroses In Captivity: An Examination Of The North American Captive Populations And Their Husbandry, Lisa A. Nordstrom
Tapirs And Rhinoceroses In Captivity: An Examination Of The North American Captive Populations And Their Husbandry, Lisa A. Nordstrom
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
All species of Tapiridae and Rhinocerotidae are threatened or endangered in the wild. Captive populations have been established for most of these species, but successful management has proved challenging. Effective ex situ conservation strategies, however, rely on the ability of zoological institutions to maintain and breed these endangered species. In this study, I examined the captive environment to identify the factors associated with reproduction, mortality, and health of rhinos and tapirs. Zoological institutions in the North American region that currently housed rhinos and/or tapirs were surveyed in 2003. Attaining an approximately 90% response rate, I compiled information on the following …
Highway Effects On Small Mammal Communities And Effectiveness Of A Deer-Vehicle Collision Mitigation Strategy, Silvia A. S. Rosa
Highway Effects On Small Mammal Communities And Effectiveness Of A Deer-Vehicle Collision Mitigation Strategy, Silvia A. S. Rosa
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
My work focused on the study of road effects and mitigation of negative impacts of roads on wildlife. Two different studies were conducted on Interstate 15, in southern Utah. My first study reported on road effects on small mammal communities. The results suggested that overall, there was no clear effect on small mammal populations relative to distance from the road. Most small mammal species did not appear to be negatively affected by the presence of the road. Instead, the road seemed to have either a neutral or a positive effect. The abundance and diversity of small mammals responded more markedly …
Environmental, Chemical, And Genetic Reduction Of Ethylene Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Timothy J. Hudelson
Environmental, Chemical, And Genetic Reduction Of Ethylene Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Timothy J. Hudelson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ethylene is an endogenously synthesized plant hormone that dissipates quickly in field conditions and seldom exceeds five nmol mol-1. Ethylene can accumulate to 1000 times this level in closed environments. The best-known effects of ethylene are its impacts on fruit ripening and senescence, yet ethylene influences growth and development throughout the plant life cycle. At low, continuous concentrations (20 to 50 nmol mol-1), ethylene reduces yield of many plants. Clean-air treatment during critical stages of floral development, silver thiosulfate (STS), and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) may delay flower senescence and reduce the detrimental effects of ethylene on peas …
Lower Paleozoic Sequence Stratigraphy, Deposystems And Paleogeography Of Northwestern Ordos Basin, North China, Benjamin J. Kessel
Lower Paleozoic Sequence Stratigraphy, Deposystems And Paleogeography Of Northwestern Ordos Basin, North China, Benjamin J. Kessel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Ordos basin rests upon the North China Block and is one of the largest sedimentary basins in north China, with more than 15 km of Phanerozoic strata. Published estimates suggest that over 2000 m of carbonates and lesser amounts of siliciclastics were deposited on the North China Carbonate Platform (NCCP) from the Lower Can1brian through the Middle Ordovician. However, lower Paleozoic facies successions and deposystems of northwestern Ordos basin remain poorly represented in western literature. This paper constrains depositional environments, lithologies, facies relationships and sea-level history of the northwestern part of the North China block (NCB) in an effort …

The Evolution From Late Miocene West Salton Detachment Faulting To Cross-Cutting Pleistocene Oblique Strike-Slip Faults In The Sw Salton Trough, Southern California, Alexander N. Steely
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Field studies in the southwest Salton Trough between Yaqui Ridge and Borrego Mountain show that the West Salton detachment fault was active during the Pliocene and may have initiated during the latest Miocene. At Yaqui Ridge dominantly east-directed extension is recorded by slickenlines on the NW-striking detachment fault, and shows that the fault is actually a low-angle dextral oblique strike-slip fault. Crustal inheritance is responsible for the position of the fault at Yaqui Ridge, which reactivates a late Cretaceous reverse-sense mylonite zone at map scale.
Late Miocene to Pliocene basin fill deposits at Borrego Mountain display progressive unconformities, contain detritus …
Wavelet Techniques In Time Series Analysis With An Application To Space Physics, Agnieszka Jach
Wavelet Techniques In Time Series Analysis With An Application To Space Physics, Agnieszka Jach
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Several wavelet techniques in the analysis of time series are developed and applied to real data sets.
Methods for long-memory models include wavelet-based confidence intervals for the self-similarity parameter in potentially heavy-tailed observations. Empirical coverage probabilities are used to assess the procedures by applying them to Linear Fractional Stable Motion with many choices of parameters. Asymptotic confidence intervals provide empirical coverage often much lower than nominal and it is recommended to use subsampling confidence intervals. A procedure for monitoring the constancy of the self-similarity parameter is proposed and applied to Ethernet data sets.
A test to distinguish a weakly dependent …
Minimal Nodal Domains For Strictly Elliptic Partial Differential Equations With Homogeneous Boundary Conditions, Charles E. Miller
Minimal Nodal Domains For Strictly Elliptic Partial Differential Equations With Homogeneous Boundary Conditions, Charles E. Miller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This work presents a proof of the dependence of the first eigenvalue for uniformly elliptic partial differential equations on the domain in a less abstract setting than that of Ivo Babušhka and Rudolf Výborný in 1965. The proof contained here, under rather mild conditions on the boundary of the domain, ∂Ω, demonstrates that the first eigenvalue of elliptic partial differential equation
{Lu + λu = 0 in Ω
{u = 0 on ∂Ω
depends continuously on the domain in the following sense. If a sequence of domains is such that Ωi → Ω in …
Fundamentals Of Mountain Resort Base Village Design: A Critical Review Of Existing Resort Developments With Recommendations For Future Development Practices, Bryan P. Harding
Fundamentals Of Mountain Resort Base Village Design: A Critical Review Of Existing Resort Developments With Recommendations For Future Development Practices, Bryan P. Harding
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The North American ski industry has grown over the past century from a small, family-owned and -operated industry, to a multi-billion dollar industry dominated by corporate management organizations. The rise of corporate resort ownership has led to the trend of the construction base village developments at ski resorts around the country to attract guests, and therefore revenue, to their resorts. Though many base villages have been very successful in attracting skiers, examples of poor landscape architectural design practices abound in the industry. This study examines several design elements considered to be the "fundamental elements of designed space," applies these elements …
Model-Centered Instruction: A Design Research Study To Investigate An Alternative Approach To Patient Education, Mary Ann Parlin
Model-Centered Instruction: A Design Research Study To Investigate An Alternative Approach To Patient Education, Mary Ann Parlin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
While medical technology, intervention, and treatment continue to advance, patients often find themselves involved in an increasingly complex healthcare system. Because of this, many patients lack access to the knowledge to facilitate successful navigation or participation in healthcare systems to their best advantage. Patient education that provides experiential information has been shown to reduce anxiety levels and increase patient health outcomes and compliance with medical instructions or recommendations. Given the demonstrated effectiveness of experiential instruction in patient education, Model-Centered Instruction (MCI) has the potential to be an effective instructional design for patient education because it affords the learner experience with …

The second sample was obtained from a random selection of current Temporary Assistance for Needy Families …
Secondary Electron Production And Transport Mechanisms By Measurement Of Angle-Energy Resolved Cross Sections Of Secondary And Backscattered Electron Emission From Gold, Jason T. Kite
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This work provides information about interactions that produce emitted electrons from polycrystalline Au. Emission energy- angle- dependent electron spectra from a polycrystalline Au surface have been measured at several incident electron beam energies. The range of incident energies (~100 eV to 2500 eV) extends from below the first crossover energy, through Emaxo, to above the second crossover energy. The conventional distinction between secondary electrons (SE) (<50 eV) is found to be crude for the investigation of electron yields using these energy- angle- resolved measurements. A more realistic boundary occurs at the local minima of the emission spectra; this feature is studied as a function of incident energy and emission angle. In addition, deviations observed in the angular resolved emission spectra from isotropic behavior suggests that residual signatures exist in the emission spectra resulting from the anisotropic SE production mechanisms. Based on the disparity between our observations and recent modeling of the emission spectra, the most recent theory and simulation studies may overestimate the occurrence of randomizing collisions of scattered secondary electrons in the model of the transport mechanism. Finally, description of extensive modification to instrumental and analysis methods are described, and their effectiveness is evaluated.
Assessing The Cognitive Development Of A Sample Of Infants In Paraguay, Shannon Peairson
Assessing The Cognitive Development Of A Sample Of Infants In Paraguay, Shannon Peairson

The purpose of this study was to examine housing, demographic, and economic characteristics that are present in neighborhoods with high rates of mortgage default. In addition, the effect of minority percentage was studied in neighborhoods with high rates of default. Defaulted properties recorded in 2003-2004 in Weber County were geo-coded and assigned into one of 42 census tracts in Weber County. Descriptive statistics then profiled the characteristics of the census tracts. Correlations were used to determine which characteristics had statistical significance with mortgage default rates as well as minority percentage. Logistic regression was conducted to create a model describing the …
Adult Romantic Attachment Style, Global Self-Esteem, And Specific Self-Views As Predictors Of Feedback Preference In Potential Romantic Relationships, Crystal Chi-Sheng Lin
Adult Romantic Attachment Style, Global Self-Esteem, And Specific Self-Views As Predictors Of Feedback Preference In Potential Romantic Relationships, Crystal Chi-Sheng Lin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study examined how adult romantic attachment (anxiety and avoidance dimensions), global self-esteem, and social and academic self-views relate to one another and how well they predict preference for a specific feedback type (enhancing, verifying, or no feedback) from a potential romantic partner in times of distress. It also investigated the relation between the type of feedback one receives and attraction to the partner who gives that type of feedback. Multiple regression analyses supported some predicted relations between romantic attachment and feedback preference. Neither global self-esteem nor social and academic self-views predicted preference for a particular feedback type, nor did …

Trusting The Dating Partner In The Face Of Relationship Problems And Uncertainty: The Moderating Role Of Parents And Friends, Rebecca Johnson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Using a sample of 82 college students in dating relationships, this study is an examination of the moderating effect of parents' and friends' approval of the dating relationship on the associations between participants' individual characteristics (age, self-esteem, and own agreeableness) and relationship characteristics (love, ambivalence, conflict, conflict resolution effectiveness, and perception of the partner's agreeableness) with trust. The results of the hierarchical regression analyses showed that approval of the relationship by parents and friends moderated the relationship between individual characteristics and relationship characteristics with trust. Specifically, friends' approval of the relationship moderated the association between self-esteem and age with trust, …
