Nutritional Anemias In Selected Countries, Wun-Yuan Mei

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Blood is a constantly changing, highly complex tissue which is concerned with the transport of cell nutrients, the elimination of wastes, and the maintenance of chemical equilibrium. The mature red blood cell takes about seven and half days to develop, then has a life cycle of 120 days. Many factors are involved in this complicated process. Many nutrients are required for the frame-work of the red blood cells and in the hemoglobin within these cells.

Anemia is a condition in which there is a reduction in the total circulating hemoglobin. Anemias may be described biochemically in terms of lowered hemoglobin …

An Approach To Range Inventory For The Annual Range Type Of The Arid And Semi-Arid Regions Of The Sudan, Farid D. Iskander

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Range inventory, by definition, is the evaluation of the range resources to determine a proper and safe level of stocking and to provide a record of vegetation and vegetation changes (Stoddart and Smith, 1955). Range survey is defined by the Range Conservation Glossary, Soil Conservation Service (1944) as "a systematic and comprehensive inventory and analysis of the range resources and related management problems of a range area for the purpose of developing plans of management therefrom." Accordingly, range inventory is the quest for basic information about rangelands and the development of guides and procedures for their management, improvement and efficient …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The encouragement of individual self-improvement and enlightenment through the process of a formal education is basic to the social system of our nation. College and university administrators are therefore faced with a practical exigency for understanding those factors that are associated with academic achievement. (During the past several years there has been increasing evidence that college achievement is dependent upon something more than intellectual ability. From experience, the average counselor in a college or university has become aware of this fact time and time again. Some studies have gone further and suggested specific personality characteristics of successful and unsuccessful students. …

Vocational education is not a separate discipline within education, but it is a basic objective of all education and must b e a basic element of each person's education. The common objective should be a successful life in which employment has a crucial role.

It is the responsibility of the school and of the instructor to provide the student with the high quality vocational education that will enable that student to have a successful life by securing a good initial job adapting himself to that vocation.

What yardstick should one invoke to determine if the objective of a successful life …

Recital Report, Fae Patterson May 1973

Recital Report, Fae Patterson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Performance is vital to a musician and educator because through understanding and analysis of problems the teacher can better help his students. The specific problems for this performer and for this recital were: (1) The interpretation of the music according to the style intended by the composer, and (2) The mastery of the technic needed to overcome difficult passages.

The purpose of the musician was to prepare a recital which would demonstrate tone quality, control, phrasing, musicianship, and confidence in performance. The basic assumption was that the teacher-musician needs to demonstrate these qualities to enable him to more effectively work …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The junior, community, or vocational-technical college is evolving into one of the most important educational institutions in the United States. The Carnegie Commission said, "Occupational programs should be given the fullest support and status within community colleges. These programs need to be flexibly geared to the changing requirements of society." Today's business society is constantly changing and this change necessitates constant analysis, evaluation, and revision of educational training programs. According to Goddard:

The development and improvement of junior college business curricula should be based on careful evaluation of present curricular offerings in business and extensive research into the nature of …

Individualized Instruction And The Utah Secondary Business Instructor, Don R. Hender

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Lloyd K. Bishop has stated that individualized instruction has been one of the most predominant themes in education for over a decade. Individualized instruction places as its central focus the welfare of the individual. All other elements are molded to facilitate the development of the individual.

One of the early outstanding presentations of this theme was that of Jean Jacques Rousseau in his immortal 'Emile'. The significance of the individual was one of the pervasive themes during the establishment of the United States of America. The welfare of the individual is one of the most prominent themes of government and …

An Investigation Of Subject Matter Other Than Shorthand And Typewriting Emphasized In The Teaching Of Transcription Activities At The Utah Secondary Level, Susan Mcarthur

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Transcription is the ultimate goal of shorthand, according to Karaim, and mailable copy and rapid production are the primary aims of transcription. The ability to transcribe shorthand notes into usable printed form should be acquired before a stenographer has a marketable shorthand skill. Driska writes that "no matter how skillful the shorthand student may be in recording dictation, she is not properly fitted for work in an office unless she can transcribe her notes quickly and accurately."

Jester Writes that businessmen want transcripts which are correct in details of English mechanics, as well as being accurate transcripts of dictation. A …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Much has been researched and written about school curriculum. A number of recent articles have focused attention on the student as an individual learner (Edmund, 1970) and away from "content" emphasis temporarily spurred by the advent of the Russian Sputnik (Cremin, 1961). Virtually every subject in the curriculum has been considered. The overall concern has been the improvement of student learning (Woolf, 1972). Efforts have also been made to increase the relevancy of learning.

An Investigation To Identify Management Topics To Be Included In The Business Administration Program At Utah State University, Richard E. Zackrison

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The development of management techniques which are in keeping with the changing environment has been termed "management science." Thrall points out that "management science has not yet reached a stage in which standardization or freezing of educational programs is desirable. " Further, he states that "we should explore new educational ideas, keeping in mind that many management scientists will become managers."

Management science may be in the rut described by Gordon and Howell. They assert that those businessmen and educators who fail to keep pace with change are forced to "plod in a rut they dug long ago. For them …

The Uses Of Personal Typewriting By Students At Utah State University And Skyview High School, Joseph Henry Wilson May 1973

The Uses Of Personal Typewriting By Students At Utah State University And Skyview High School, Joseph Henry Wilson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The changing concept of the uses of the typewriter has had an enormous effect on the teaching of typewriting. In addition to the vocational objective, the personal-use objective has been added. Personal-use typewriting has as its goal the material that the student is likely to typewrite for himself; vocational typewriting is focused on what others want typed for them. The distinguishing characteristic in teaching the two is therefore not the skill accomplishment so much as the kind of material involved (13).

A study released by Hosler and Maske (4) seems to substantiate the reasoning that students in a personal-use typing …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the settlement of the West, the Mormon response was unique. since their methods, techniques, and institutions differed from other settlers of the West, the Mormons were repeatedly censured by outsiders. Although the institution of polygamy elicited considerable emotionalism and aroused determined opposition, there were other institutions which actually contributed just as much to the conflagration.

As the Utah War [1857-58] became an embarrassment to the United States government, congress demanded of President Buchanan the grounds upon which the decision for war was based. President Buchanan thereupon presented several letters, the first of which was written on October 3, 1856, …

A Study To Determine The Extent Of Utilization Of Individualized Instruction In Typewriting, Lucille N. Pruitt

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The trend today is toward the individualized approaches in the teaching of typewriting and other business subjects, Susan Schrumpf notes that this concept is continuously gaining popularity because the spotlight is clearly on the student -- his abilities and limitations -- and how the business educator can best minister his needs. if individualized instruction is utilized properly, it is the best possible preparation.

Keeping in mind that the primary goal of society is that of assisting the individual to reach his highest potential, individualization of instruction is the answer to many problems for vocational educators. Howe states:

A democratic society …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

There is little research pertaining to teacher aide programs in rural school districts on a national level. The writer is not aware of any studies conducted in Utah which have analyzed how teacher aides are selected, trained, and utilized in a rural school district. Yet, we must find ways to conserve the professional talent of teachers and to put it to more effective use and the use of teacher aides is one way we have attempted to do this.

A Linear Programming Decision Model For Elk And Deer Management On The Logan Peak Winter Range Area, Ronald P. Grove May 1973

A Linear Programming Decision Model For Elk And Deer Management On The Logan Peak Winter Range Area, Ronald P. Grove

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

One consequence of our surging human population is the corresponding increased level of resource consumption. This occurrence renders it imperative that resource managers intensify their management of the world's natural resources. Failure to improve management techniques involving the use of these resources will result in premature depletion of non-renewable commodities and severe checks on the vigor of renewable resources.

Management is faced with the difficult task of searching for astute means of allocating natural resources. Because of the tremendous size and complexity of the natural world, the problem can be extremely complicated.

Mathematical techniques have proved useful in providing natural …

Range Improvement By Waterspreading In The Gash Delta, Kassala Province: Democratic Republic Of The Sudan, Farid D. Iskander May 1973

Range Improvement By Waterspreading In The Gash Delta, Kassala Province: Democratic Republic Of The Sudan, Farid D. Iskander

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The area north of latitude 14° north in the Sudan is characterized by unreliable precipitation patterns and a high incidence of a drouth period following the first rain of the "rainy season." In this region it is not uncommon to have a completely dry year without a single rain shower. The damage occurring to the plant cover when a drouth period follows the first rain is great. This is especially the case for the annual plant species in that such precipitation distribution patterns tend to exhaust the seed supply in the soil and do not supply adequate moisture for seed …

Infinite Product Spaces Under The Tychonoff And Goofynoff Topologies, James A. Capps May 1973

Infinite Product Spaces Under The Tychonoff And Goofynoff Topologies, James A. Capps

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The only topology considered for the infinite product of topological spaces in most current topology texts and research papers is the Tychonoff topology. Yet there is another topology which seems to be a much more topologically natural generalization of the usual "box" topology of finite products. We call this natural generalization the Goofynoff topology and exploit its properties. The use of the word "Goofynoff" (pronounced Goof'-n-off) is not universal and does not refer to any person of that name. In the few references to this topology that can be found, it is usually called simply the Box Topology. None of …

Air Pressures Over Reservoir, Canal, And Water Catchment Surfaces Exposed To Wind, Allen Ray Dedrick May 1973

Air Pressures Over Reservoir, Canal, And Water Catchment Surfaces Exposed To Wind, Allen Ray Dedrick

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Surface air pressure differentials that occur over reservoirs, canals, and water-catchment aprons in high-wind conditions were determined by the use of models in a wind tunnel. Such information was needed concerning the magnitude and location of destructive wind forces on water barriers constructed of exposed flexible membrane liners. Rigid models, without a membrane, were used to measure airpressure differentials.

Air-pressure differentials were dependent on geometric configuration and were independent of viccous forces above the critical Reynolds number which was determined experimentally. The geometric factors studied with respect to reservoirs and canals included approach slope, approach slope length, leeward slope, and …

Modification Of Ontogenic Expression Due To Relocation Of The Ry+ Gene In Drosophila Melanogaster, Allen A. Badgett Jr. May 1973

Modification Of Ontogenic Expression Due To Relocation Of The Ry+ Gene In Drosophila Melanogaster, Allen A. Badgett Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The ry+ gene of Drosophila melanogaster and its associated enzyme, xanthine dehydrogenase, were employed in an analysis of the relationship between regulation and the location of a gene in the genome. Enzyme assays as an indication of gene activity were performed on genotypes containing zero, one and two doses of ry+ genes. Xanthine dehydrogenase activity of rosy genes in normal and relocated positions was determined during development.

The results indicate: 1) the gene ry+ is differentially active during ontogeny; 2) the activity during ontogeny is proportional to the number of ry+ genes present in the genome; …

A Description Of Anglers And Angling Use In Two Areas Of The Uinta Mountains, John F. Hoagland May 1973

A Description Of Anglers And Angling Use In Two Areas Of The Uinta Mountains, John F. Hoagland

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The High Uinta Primitive Area, Utah's most popular high mountain recreation area, has a reputation as an excellent trout and grayling fishery. Proposed for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System, the area faces several management dilemmas. The primary problem being that managers must protect the resource from the effects of heavy recreational use without destroying the primitive and aesthetic dimensions of wilderness environment. It appears that much impact on the more accessible lakes is due to fishing use. The objectives of the study were: (1) to determine the proportions of angling to non-angling groups; (2) to describe certain characteristics …
