Super Behaviour: A Note On Young Australian Adults’ Engagement With Their Superannuation Accounts, Malcolm Anderson, Martin Clark, Ian Ramsay, Chander Shekhar Jan 2017

Super Behaviour: A Note On Young Australian Adults’ Engagement With Their Superannuation Accounts, Malcolm Anderson, Martin Clark, Ian Ramsay, Chander Shekhar

Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal

We examine the behaviour and attitudes towards superannuation of 25-34 year old Australians. Our results suggest that they are generally uninterested in their superannuation accounts. They seldom read the information provided by their funds, rarely change their fund, and a majority of them do not make voluntary contributions. Overall the results suggest significant lack of interest in, and engagement and concern with issues related to their retirement planning.

Australia Is Facing A Housing Affordability Crisis: Is The Solution To This Problem The Singapore Model Of Housing?, John Mclaren, Allan Yeo, Michael Sweet

Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal

Australia is pricing young buyers out of the housing market. Unfortunately, debt-free home ownership in the retirement years is a key part of the Australian welfare system. This paper provides one possible solution to the current housing predicament of Australia. In doing so, the paper examines the housing strategy in Singapore, where residents are provided with accommodation at a reasonable cost. This strategy is examined and translated for use in Australia. In conclusion the paper proposes that the Singapore model of home ownership is worthy of consideration by the government of Australia.

The SAFIRED (Savannah Fires in the Early Dry Season) campaign took place from 29th of May, 2014 until the 30th June, 2014 at the Australian Tropical Atmospheric Research Station (ATARS) in the Northern Territory, Australia. The purpose of this campaign was to investigate emissions from fires in the early dry season in northern Australia. Measurements were made of biomass burning aerosols, volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic carbons, greenhouse gases, radon, mercury cycle, and trace metals. Aspects of the biomass burning aerosol emissions investigated included; emission factors of various emitted species, physical and chemical aerosol properties, aerosol aging, micronutrient supply to …

Manufactured Home Villages In Australia - A Melting Pot Of Chronic Disease?, Karin Robinson, Abhijeet Ghosh, Elizabeth J. Halcomb Jan 2017

Manufactured Home Villages In Australia - A Melting Pot Of Chronic Disease?, Karin Robinson, Abhijeet Ghosh, Elizabeth J. Halcomb

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Manufactured home villages (MHVs) are an increasingly popular housing option for older Australians. This paper reports a cross-sectional survey that sought to describe the health status and health service access of MHV residents. The survey tool comprised demographic and health status items, primary healthcare access perceptions and the World Health Organization Quality of Life tool (WHOQOL-BREF). One-hundred-eighty-six MHV residents from regional NSW completed the survey. Hypertension (54.8%) and arthritis (46.5%) were the most prevalent chronic diseases reported. Overall, respondents expressed a high level of satisfaction with the sense of safety and security (82.8%), neighbours (69.4%) and the overall location of …

Movement Of Lithics By Trampling: An Experiment In The Madjedbebe Sediments, Northern Australia, Benjamin Marwick, Elspeth Hayes, Christopher Clarkson, Richard Fullagar Jan 2017

Movement Of Lithics By Trampling: An Experiment In The Madjedbebe Sediments, Northern Australia, Benjamin Marwick, Elspeth Hayes, Christopher Clarkson, Richard Fullagar

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Understanding post-depositional movement of artefacts is vital to making reliable claims about the formation of archaeological deposits. Human trampling has long been recognised as a contributor to post-depositional artefact displacement. We investigate the degree to which artefact form (shape-and-size) attributes can predict how an artefact is moved by trampling. We use the Zingg classification system to describe artefact form. Our trampling substrate is the recently excavated archaeological deposits from Madjedbebe, northern Australia. Madjedbebe is an important site because it contains early evidence of human activity in Australia. The age of artefacts at Madjedbebe is contentious because of the possibility of …

Societal Perspective On Access To Publicly Subsidised Medicines: A Cross Sectional Survey Of 3080 Adults In Australia, Lesley Chim, Glenn P. Salkeld, Patrick J. Kelly, Wendy Lipworth, Dyfrig A. Hughes, Martin R. Stockler

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Background Around the world government agencies responsible for the selection and reimbursement of prescribed medicines and other health technologies are considering how best to bring community preferences into their decision making. In particular, community views about the distribution or equity of funding across the population. These official committees and agencies often have access to the best available and latest evidence on clinical effectiveness, safety and cost from large clinical trials and population-based studies. All too often they do not have access to high quality evidence about community views. We therefore, conducted a large and representative population-based survey in Australia to …

Wheat, Sheep Or Elvis Presley? Rural Australia Has Had To Change Its Tune, John Connell, Christopher R. Gibson Jan 2017

Wheat, Sheep Or Elvis Presley? Rural Australia Has Had To Change Its Tune, John Connell, Christopher R. Gibson

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Rural and regional Australia have had a hard time of late. The economies of Sydney and Melbourne are growing, but much of the rest of their states are not. The population of regional areas is stagnating and agriculture is struggling. Perhaps worst of all there is a feeling that no-one in Canberra or in the booming coastal periphery cares about this. The people of Orange have apparently spoken. Outside Sydney, behind what seems like an impervious sandstone curtain, not all is well. Even the largest towns in regional New South Wales are struggling to retain their populations and have faced …

Relationship Between Indoor Air Temperatures And Energy Bills For Low Income Homes In Australia, Clayton Mcdowell, Georgios Kokogiannakis, Laia Ledo Gomis, Paul Cooper

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Energy poverty is a prevalent issue in Australia and other countries across the globe especially for people with a low income. This paper seeks to investigate the relationship of energy consumption and indoor air temperatures and is separated into 3 sections; a comparison of actual electricity consumption to energy benchmarks provided by the Australian Energy Regulator, monitoring results of living room air temperature for the winter of 2015, and an analysis of living room air temperatures versus electricity consumption. The results of a comparison of electricity consumption of 119 low income elderly peoples (60+) dwellings to that of the energy …

Australia And The Secretive Exploitation Of The Chatham Islands To 1842, Andre Brett Jan 2017

Australia And The Secretive Exploitation Of The Chatham Islands To 1842, Andre Brett

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

The European discovery of the Chatham Islands in 1791 resulted in significant consequences for its indigenous Moriori people. The colonial Australian influence on the Chathams has received little scholarly attention. This article argues that the young colonies of New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land led the exploitation of the archipelago before its annexation to New Zealand in 1842. The Chathams became a secretive outpost of the colonial economy, especially the sealing trade. Colonial careering transformed the islands: environmental destruction accompanied economic exploitation, with deleterious results for the Moriori. When two Māori iwi (tribes) from New Zealand's North Island invaded …

No Longer Tied To Britain, Australia Is Still Searching For Its Place In The World, Gregory C. Melleuish Jan 2017

No Longer Tied To Britain, Australia Is Still Searching For Its Place In The World, Gregory C. Melleuish

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

It is worth noting that Australia Day commemorates the dumping of a cargo of the outcasts of Britain on the shores of the Australian continent. It was not an act of escaping religious oppression, as in the case of America, or the founding of a new political order, as in France.

Boardroom Gender Diversity And Stock Liquidity: Evidence From Australia, Ammad Ahmed, Searat Ali Jan 2017

Boardroom Gender Diversity And Stock Liquidity: Evidence From Australia, Ammad Ahmed, Searat Ali

Faculty of Business and Law - Papers

In this study, we investigate the relationship between gender-diverse boards and stock liquidity in Australia. We expect that the gender-diverse boards, with their efficient monitoring functions, lead to higher stock liquidity that has positive implications for market efficiency. Consistent with the notion, we find, using 944 Australian firms from 2008 to 2013, that boardroom gender diversity is significantly and positively associated with stock liquidity. Our findings are robust to a series of endogeneity checks and to alternative proxies for gender diversity and stock liquidity. Our results reject the assumption of women on the board as ‘tokens’ and also provide support …

Accounting For Justice In Local Government Responses To Sea-Level Rise: Evidence From Two Local Councils In Victoria, Australia, Sonia Graham, Jon Barnett Jan 2017

Accounting For Justice In Local Government Responses To Sea-Level Rise: Evidence From Two Local Councils In Victoria, Australia, Sonia Graham, Jon Barnett

Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities - Papers

This chapter explains the way justice is being considered by two local governments tasked with the responsibility of facilitating adaptation to sea-level rise. It compares the ways in which the East Gippsland Shire Council and Wellington Shire Council in Victoria have approached adaptation to sea-level rise, how they have engaged their communities on the issue, and the way staff in these two local governments think about the justice dimensions of adaptation.

The Narrative Construction Of Emergent Professioinal Identites Of Skilled Immigrants In Australia, Ekaterina Alferova Jan 2017

The Narrative Construction Of Emergent Professioinal Identites Of Skilled Immigrants In Australia, Ekaterina Alferova

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

This study addresses the issues of changing identities of highly skilled immigrants from non-English speaking backgrounds, recently arrived in Australia under the “General Skilled Migrant” Program. Taking into account the importance of skilled immigration for the current and future economic development of Australia, the study focusses on aspects of skilled immigration that go beyond its economic constituent, shifting attention to issues of skilled immigrants’ social identities and their sense of self. It is argued that professional participation of skilled immigrants is strongly tied to their social identities and changing self-perceptions.

This study provides an examination and analysis of processes of …

A Multi-Perspective Framework For Modelling And Analysing The Determinants Of Cloud Computing Adoption Among Smes In Australia, Salim Zahir Al Isma'ili Jan 2017

A Multi-Perspective Framework For Modelling And Analysing The Determinants Of Cloud Computing Adoption Among Smes In Australia, Salim Zahir Al Isma'ili

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

Cloud Computing (CC) is an emerging technology that can potentially revolutionise the application and delivery of IT. There has been little research, however, into the use of CC in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). With all the promised benefits of cloud computing for cost-cutting, and its perceived advantages to businesses in focusing on their core business activities by outsourcing their IT capabilities to the cloud, the indicators show that CC has been adopted very slowly. Migration to CC has various challenges which go beyond the technology itself. There is also a significant research gap in the investigation of the adoption …

Monsters: Australian Mythology, National Identity And The Design Of Australian Material Culture, Trent Jansen Jan 2017

Monsters: Australian Mythology, National Identity And The Design Of Australian Material Culture, Trent Jansen

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 2017+

This studio-based thesis develops a speculative theoretical framework to assist in the design of quintessentially Australian objects. Through both project-driven and academic research, the thesis has sought to identify several core signifiers in the discourse of Australian national identity and material culture. The aim was to design furniture pieces inspired by those components of uniquely Australian culture that might resonate with a large percentage of Australians.

Using material culture theory as a foundation, this body of research surveys a broad selection of pre- and post-colonial Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian artefacts, concluding that the most geographically unique examples of material culture …
