We investigate the 20-year-average boreal winter temperatures generated by an ensemble of six regional climate models (RCMs) in phase I of the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program. We use the long-run average (20-year integration) to smooth out variability and to capture the climate properties from the RCM outputs. We find that, although the RCMs capture the large-scale climate variation from coast to coast and from south to north similarly, their outputs can differ substantially in some regions. We propose a Bayesian hierarchical model to synthesize information from the ensemble of RCMs, and we construct a consensus climate signal …

This paper introduces population growth in the Uzawa-Lucas model, analyzing the implications of the choice of the welfare criterion on the model's outcome. Traditional growth theory assumes population growth to be exponential, but this is not a realistic assumption (see Brida and Accinelli, 2007). We model exogenous population change by a generic function of population size. We show that a unique non-trivial equilibrium exists and the economy converges towards it along a saddle path, independently of population dynamics. SCIAMACHY onboard ENVISAT (launched in 2002) enables the retrieval of global long-term columnaveraged dry air mole fractions of the two most important anthropogenic greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and methane (denoted XCO2 and XCH4). In order to assess the quality of the greenhouse gas data obtained with the recently introduced v2 of the scientific retrieval algorithm WFM-DOAS, we present validations with ground-based Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) measurements and comparisons with model results at eight Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) sites providing realistic error estimates of the satellite data. Olanzapine is effective at treating multiple domains of schizophrenia symptoms. However, it induces serious metabolic side effects. Antipsychotic drug’s antagonistic affinity to histamine H1 receptors has been identified as a main contributor for weight gain/obesity side effects. This study therefore investigated whether a combined treatment of betahistine (a H1 receptor agonist and H3 receptor antagonist) could reduce the body weight/obesity induced by olanzapine. Female Sprague Dawley rats were treated orally with olanzapine (1 mg/kg, t.i.d.) and/or betahistine (2.67 mg/kg, t.i.d.), or vehicle for two weeks. This study investigated the reduction of Pb(II)) by bioaccumulation and biosorption in an artificial biosorbent. The biosorbent was prepared by mixing grounded manure and fine-grain sand at a ratio of 1:1 (w/w) with the media packed into a laboratory scale column (diameter of 4.7 cm). The sweet soy sauce (food grade) solution with pH ranged of 5.0-5.5 and the concentration of 15 g COD L-1 was fed at a rate of 500 mL d-1 to the column surface for a period of 101 d. Supplier evaluation and selection problems are inherently multi-criteria decision problems. Numerous analytical techniques ranging from simple weighted scoring to complex mathematical programming approaches have been proposed to solve these problems. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been used to evaluate suppliers' performance when there are multiple inputs and outputs in the supplier selection problem. The DEA determines the relative efficiencies of multiple suppliers. These relative efficiencies are then used to provide benchmarking data for reducing the number of suppliers. Background: 454 pyrosequencing is a commonly used massively parallel DNA sequencing technology with a wide variety of application fields such as epigenetics, metagenomics and transcriptomics. A well-known problem of this platform is its sensitivity to base-calling insertion and deletion errors, particularly in the presence of long homopolymers. In addition, the base-call quality scores are not informative with respect to whether an insertion or a deletion error is more likely. Surprisingly, not much effort has been devoted to the development of improved base-calling methods and more intuitive quality scores for this platform.

Accurate modelling of the radio channel is often the most difficult aspect of a Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) simulation due to the large variability present in vehicular terrain. CORNER is a propagation model that calculates path-loss in an urban terrain with a large concentration of buildings, based on the position of the transmitter and receiver on a street map. This paper proposes additions to the CORNER propagation model to take selective multi-path fading into account and investigates the performance of the GPSR routing protocol under the CORNER propagation model in a realistic city environment.

We address the problem of recovering the time-dependent parameters of the Black-Scholes option pricing model when the underlying stock price dynamics are modelled by a finite-state, continuous-time Markov chain. The coupled system of Dupire-type partial differential equations is derived and formulated as an inverse Stieltjes moment problem. We provide numerical illustration on how to apply our method to simulated financial data. The accuracy of the model parameter estimation is examined and sensitivity analyses are included to study the behaviour of the estimated results when model parameters are varied.

We introduce demographic shocks in a multi-sector endogenous growth model, a-la Uzawa-Lucas. We show that an analytical solution of the stochastic problem can be found, under the restriction that the capital share equals both the inverse of the intertemporal elasticity of substitution and the degree of altruism. We show that uncertainty lowers the optimal levels of consumption and the physical capital stock, while they do not affect the share of human capital employed in production.

Supplier selection is the strategy adopted by the manufacturer, to evaluate and select suppliers, which can fulfil the requirements of the manufacturer. To this end, data envelopment analysis (DEA), as a multiple criteria decision-making tool, has been applied for several times. However, conventional DEA models cannot simultaneously consider dual-role and non-discretionary factors. The objective of this paper is to propose a DEA model for ranking suppliers in the presence of both dual-role factors and non-discretionary inputs. We retrieved column-averaged dry air mole fractions of atmospheric carbon dioxide (XCO 2) from backscattered short-wave infrared (SWIR) sunlight measured by the Japanese Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT). Over two years of XCO 2 retrieved from GOSAT is compared with XCO 2 inferred from collocated SWIR measurements by seven ground-based Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) stations. The average difference between GOSAT and TCCON XCO 2 for individual TCCON sites ranges from -0.87 ppm to 0.77 ppm with a mean value of 0.1 ppm and standard deviation of 0.56 ppm. Grain size, shape and orientation play an important role on the deformability of micro workpiece as the geometrical dimensions approach to a characteristic scale in micro-forming process. This paper addresses the three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model with weighed centroidal voronoi diagram (WCVD). Steady-state grains are generated when the voronoi generating points approach the grain centroid utilising a simplex integration algorithm. In this paper, finite element model is used to carry out thermal analysis of bead-on-plate welding. The model followed the proposed five step strategies which were then built into a model to obtain temperature history at the positions of thermocouples. Temperature field was also evaluated by comparing predicted weld bead with the actual weld bead. Using these proposed strategies, well matched temperature histories and temperature field have been obtained.

A hysteretic stress-strain model is developed for unconfined concrete with the intention of providing efficient modelling for the structural behaviour of concrete in seismic regions. The proposed model is based on the findings of previous experimental and analytical studies. We study a stochastic, discrete-time, two-sector growth model à la Solow (1956) characterised by perpetual growth. Assuming that exogenous i.i.d. shocks hit the physical production sector, we show that the capital dynamics can be converted, through an appropriate log-transformation, into an iterated function system converging to an invariant distribution supported on a Cantor set.
