All Hail Jugaad? Understanding The Latest Management Fad From India, Thomas Birtchnell Jan 2012

All Hail Jugaad? Understanding The Latest Management Fad From India, Thomas Birtchnell

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

What do India’s huge blackouts this month have to do with the latest fad for CEOs? Forget guanxi, the Chinese art of networking; forget the Japanese-inspired disciplinary regime, the Six Sigma way. The latest fad to hit the CEO conference circuit is the Indian notion of jugaad. Its supporters include, amongst others, Saatchi and Saatchi’s CEO Worldwide Kevin Roberts. Borrowing a term for the cobbled-together cars the rural poor drive, this new “Indian way” means throwing out all of the complex and costly organisational burdens that clog up smooth and seamless business: occupational health and safety and risk management just …

An Exploration Of Applying Rules Based System Modelling Into A Quality Management Framework - Extending The Quality Triangle, Lee Styger Jan 2012

An Exploration Of Applying Rules Based System Modelling Into A Quality Management Framework - Extending The Quality Triangle, Lee Styger

Sydney Business School - Papers

The construct of quality management has moved on greatly since the "quality policing" concepts of the 1980's. Continual improvement and customer centric business development philosophies have become the norm within a "total" business environment. Typically, organisations exploit a series of matrices, templates and models to monitor and control their operations. It has however been noted that, often, due to minimal formal user centric instructions being available, even simple quality and business models are misused and fail to deliver their potential to impact on the business. This paper discusses the possibilities of applying knowledge based engineering fundamentals into quality and business …

Land Management Practices Associated With House Loss In Wildfires, Philip Gibbons, Linda Van Bommel, A Malcolm Gill, Geoffrey J. Cary, Don A. Driscoll, Ross A. Bradstock, Emma Knight, Max A. Moritz, Scott L. Stephens, David B. Lindenmayer

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Losses to life and property from unplanned fires (wildfires) are forecast to increase because of population growth in periurban areas and climate change. In response, there have been moves to increase fuel reduction—clearing, prescribed burning, biomass removal and grazing—to afford greater protection to peri-urban communities in fire-prone regions. But how effective are these measures? Severe wildfires in southern Australia in 2009 presented a rare opportunity to address this question empirically. We predicted that modifying several fuels could theoretically reduce house loss by 76%–97%, which would translate to considerably fewer wildfire-related deaths. However, maximum levels of fuel reduction are unlikely to …

Voltage Unbalance Management In Power Systems Based On Iec 61000-3-13:2008: Implications On The Use Of 'Kue Factor', Upuli Jayatunga, Sarath Perera, Philip Ciufo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Voltage unbalance emission allocation principles prescribed in IEC61000-3-13:2008 Technical Report utilise a factor, kuE, which allows separation of the total voltage unbalance that arises at a point of evaluation due to both the load under consideration and the supply network. As per the definition given, this factor (kuE) accounts for the unbalance emission that arises due to the load whereas (1-kuE) accounts for unbalance that arises due to the network. The technical report prescribes a range of values from which a suitable value can be chosen based on the system characteristics, however, no systematic methodologies exist to-date to determine the …

A Multi-Agent Solution To Distribution System Management By Considering Distributed Generators, Fenghui Ren, Minjie Zhang, Darmawan Sutanto Jan 2012

A Multi-Agent Solution To Distribution System Management By Considering Distributed Generators, Fenghui Ren, Minjie Zhang, Darmawan Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A traditional distribution network carries electricity from a central power resource to consumers, and the power dispatch is controlled centrally. Distributed generators (DGs) emerge as an alternative power resource to distribution networks at a smaller and distributed scale, which will bring benefits such as reduced voltage drop and loss. However, because most of high penetration DGs are not utility owned and characterized by high degree of uncertainty such as solar and wind, the distribution network may perform differently from the conventionally expected behaviors. How to dynamically and efficiently manage the power dispatch in a distribution network to balance the supply …

Corruption Tactics: Outrage Management In A Local Government Scandal, Brian Martin Jan 2012

Corruption Tactics: Outrage Management In A Local Government Scandal, Brian Martin

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

A mobilised citizenry is a threat to corrupt operations. Therefore, those involved in behaviours potentially labelled as corrupt have an interest in minimising public outrage. Five ways of doing this are to hide the activity, denigrate opponents, reinterpret actions as legitimate, use official channels to give an appearance of justice, and intimidate or bribe people involved. A local government scandal in Wollongong, Australia, illustrates all these tactics, with public hearings and media coverage providing volumes of revealing information. The implication of this analysis is that anti-corruption efforts should emphasise ways of increasing public outrage.

A Case Study Of Globalized Knowledge Flows: Guanxi In Social Science And Management Theory, Xiaoying Qi Jan 2012

A Case Study Of Globalized Knowledge Flows: Guanxi In Social Science And Management Theory, Xiaoying Qi

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

This article examines globalized knowledge flows through a case study of the treatment of the Chinese concept of guanxi in social and management science journals. Three forms of concept– theory relations are postulated which effectively correspond with different patterns of knowledge flow. The treatment of this concept in 214 refereed journal articles published from 1999 to 2009 indicates that the concept guanxi, which possesses capacity for theoretical development, is predominantly treated merely as an object of study rather than the basis of theoretical elaboration. A continuing dominant pattern of knowledge flows from the metropole to the periphery is thus indicated. …

Disaster Management (DM) is a multidisciplinary endeavour and a very difficult knowledge domain to model. It is a diffused area of knowledge that is continuously evolving and informally represented. Metamodel is the output artefact of metamodelling, a software engineering approach, which makes statements about what can be expressed in the valid models of the knowledge domain. It is an appropriate high level knowledge structure to facilitate it being communicated among DM stakeholders. A Disaster Management Metamodel (DMM) is developed. To satisfy the expressiveness and the correctness of a DMM, in this paper we present a metamodel evaluation technique by using …
