Broadband And The Impact On Education, Elizabeth D. Eastland Jan 2012

Broadband And The Impact On Education, Elizabeth D. Eastland

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

Broadband has the potential to radically transform the educational landscape. Coupled with access to the Internet, it has the potential to decrease the time it takes to learn a subject, increase grade point averages, increase course completion rates and, particularly important for Australia, provide rural and regional Australia with access to the same teaching resources as metropolitan areas, particularly important given the chronic shortage of teaching resources experienced. However educational institutions, particularly universities, are highly complex organisations with geographically dispersed campuses, culturally diverse stakeholders, multiple interfaces to the external world, and a multiplicity of different discipline-specific users. At the same …

Studying The Impact Of The Corner Propagation Model On Vanet Routing In Urban Environments, Abhinay Mukunthan, Craig Cooper, Farzad Safaei, D. Franklin, Mehran Abolhasan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Accurate modelling of the radio channel is often the most difficult aspect of a Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) simulation due to the large variability present in vehicular terrain. CORNER is a propagation model that calculates path-loss in an urban terrain with a large concentration of buildings, based on the position of the transmitter and receiver on a street map. This paper proposes additions to the CORNER propagation model to take selective multi-path fading into account and investigates the performance of the GPSR routing protocol under the CORNER propagation model in a realistic city environment.

The Impact Of Students' Exploration Strategies In Discovery-Based Instructional Software, Barney Dalgarno, Gregor Kennedy, Sue Bennett

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

Active learning is a key element of constructivist learning theory and has been used as an argument for employing discovery-based designs with instructional software. On the other hand, researchers have highlighted empirical evidence showing that 'pure' discovery- based learning is of limited value. This suggests that how learners interact is important in predicting whether learning occurs. This paper reports on a study of 158 university students who each used two instructional simulations - one with a discovery-based design and the other with a tutorial-based design. Students' learning outcomes were assessed via pre-tests and program were recorded and coded as either …

The results show that the influence of dissatisfaction is …

Dynamic Change Impact Analysis For Maintaining And Evolving Agent Systems, Hoa Khanh Dam, Aditya Ghose Jan 2012

Dynamic Change Impact Analysis For Maintaining And Evolving Agent Systems, Hoa Khanh Dam, Aditya Ghose

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In contrast to an increasing number of agent-based applica- tions in various domains, there has been very little work on maintenance and evolution of agent systems. This paper ad- dresses this gap with a focus on change impact analysis, i.e. estimating the potential eects of changes before they are made as an agent system evolves. We propose a technique for performing impact analysis in an agent system using dy- namic information about agent behaviour. Our approach builds a representation of an agent's behaviour by analyzing its execution traces which consist of goals and plans, and uses this representation to estimate …

The Impact Of The Introduction Of An Electronic Nursing Documentation System On Caregivers' Activities In Residential Aged Care, Esther Naliaka Munyisia Jan 2012

The Impact Of The Introduction Of An Electronic Nursing Documentation System On Caregivers' Activities In Residential Aged Care, Esther Naliaka Munyisia

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Health information technology (health IT) holds great promise for improving the quality and efficiency of aged care services in residential aged care facilities (RACFs). Health IT, and, in particular, electronic documentation systems, have potential to improve the management of residents’ records, to facilitate the delivery of high quality care to the residents by reducing caregivers’ time on documentation and increasing their time with the residents. Despite the expected benefits, adoption of health IT in RACFs remains poor. A number of aged care providers are reluctant to introduce health IT into residential aged care services. Among the reasons for this is …

Bullshit: An Australian Perspective, Or, What Can An Organisational Change Impact Statement Tell Us About Higher Education In Australia?, Katherine Bode, Leigh Dale

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

In the last few years, a scholarly critique of current forms and directions of higher education has become increasingly prominent. This work, often but not exclusively focussed on the American and British systems, and on humanities disciplines, laments the transformation of the university into ‘a fast-food outlet that sells only those ideas that its managers believe will sell [and] treats its employees as if they were too devious or stupid to be trusted’ (Parker and Jary 335). Topics include the proliferation of courses and subject areas seen as profitable, particularly for overseas students;1 the commensurate diminution or dissolution of ‘unprofitable’ …

'Ditto': Law, Pop Culture And Humanities And The Impact Of Intergenerational Interpretative Dissonance, Marett Leiboff

Faculty of Law - Papers (Archive)

Building on Julius Stone's remark that jurisprudence is law's extroversion (or extraversion), this essay explores the consequences that flow from the loss of a shared humanities discourse by lawyers. In adapting the concept of extraversion to those things about us in the world, the essay considers the finding of an empirical study, Law's Gens Project, which revealed a profound, almost seismic shift in what different generational groupings of lawyers know, based in the humanities, placing this point of rupture squarely in the 1970s. Drawing on allusions and cultural references used in judgments, this project reveals how these cultural markers affect …

Impact Of Mains Connected Three-Phase Induction Motor Loading Levels On Network Voltage Unbalance Attenuation, Upuli Jayatunga, Sarath Perera, Philip Ciufo Jan 2012

Impact Of Mains Connected Three-Phase Induction Motor Loading Levels On Network Voltage Unbalance Attenuation, Upuli Jayatunga, Sarath Perera, Philip Ciufo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Voltage unbalance (VU) in power systems should be managed in a systematic manner in order to minimise its adverse effects on both customer equipment and supply utilities. It is a well known fact that three-phase induction motor performance can be significantly affected in the presence of supply voltage unbalance. It is also known that three-phase induction motors can help to reduce pre-existing network voltage unbalance levels. Recently undertaken research aligned with IEC/TR 61000-3-13:2008 Technical Report on voltage unbalance management (emission allocation and emission assessment) have quantified the contribution made by induction motors to the net voltage unbalance at a point …

Distributed Energy Storage For Mitigation Of Voltage-Rise Impact Caused By Rooftop Solar Pv, M J. E Alam, K M. Muttaqi, Darmawan Sutanto Jan 2012

Distributed Energy Storage For Mitigation Of Voltage-Rise Impact Caused By Rooftop Solar Pv, M J. E Alam, K M. Muttaqi, Darmawan Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A high penetration of solar photovoltaic (PV) resources into distribution networks may create voltage rise problem when the generation from PV resources substantially exceeds the load demand. To reduce the voltage rise, the excess amount of power from the solar PV units needs to be reduced. In this paper, distributed storage systems are proposed for the mitigation of voltage rise problem. The surplus energy from the solar PV is used to charge the distributed storage units during midday, when the power from the solar PV would be typically higher than the load level. This stored energy is then used to …

Impact Of Wind Generator Control Strategies On Flicker Emission In Distribution Networks, Lasantha Meegahapola, Sarath Perera Jan 2012

Impact Of Wind Generator Control Strategies On Flicker Emission In Distribution Networks, Lasantha Meegahapola, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Renewable power generators are increasingly being integrated to electricity networks to achieve future renewable energy targets in power generation. In particular, wind power generation has already reported substantial penetration levels in electricity networks. Traditionally, flicker phenomenon is considered to be one of the power quality issues in power distribution networks due to fluctuating consumer loads connected to the network. Large-scale integration of wind power generators may create significant voltage fluctuations in distribution feeders due to stochastic and intermittent nature of the wind resources. This study aims to investigate and characterize the flicker emission under different control strategies for DFIG based …

Acoustic Emission Monitoring Of Split Formation During Charpy Impact Testing Of High Strength Steel, Andrii Kostryzhev, R B. Punch, Claire L. Davis, Martin Strangwood Jan 2012

Acoustic Emission Monitoring Of Split Formation During Charpy Impact Testing Of High Strength Steel, Andrii Kostryzhev, R B. Punch, Claire L. Davis, Martin Strangwood

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring has been used to detect split formation during room temperature low blow Charpy impact testing of high strength thick strip steels. The AE signal analysis identified separate signals originating from hammer impact, plastic deformation (verified using Charpy impact testing on mild steel with no splits) and split initiation/growth. The presence of splits was confirmed by sectioning and fractography, and the splits were brittle in nature. A possible correlation between the AE signal features and fracture mode is presented.

Political Connection, Founder-Manager And Their Impact On Tunneling In China's Listed Firms, Liangbo Ma, Shiguang Ma, Gary G. Tian

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Reciprocal relationship, often regarded as mutually beneficial and secure, can actually be destructive and result in inefficiency. We provide evidence of such double-blade by studying the impact of political connection on corporate governance. Private firms in countries where the government controls the allocation of resources have incentives to seek political connections by hiring politicians or ex-politicians as top executives. Such political capital, however, may turn into political constraint when the CEOs fail to perform but use connections to entrench themselves. We take advantage of the unique setting in China to illustrate this argument. We show that politically connected CEOs have …

The project ‘R2P in Oceania’ is a political assessment of the impact and influence of R2P principles on the developing police forces of three states, Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea (PNG). It links most strongly with the Centre’s priority concept two: supporting states to build their capacities to protect their own populations from abuses of human rights, including genocide and mass atrocities. This articulates with the Responsibility to Assist, the least studied aspect of the UNSG’s ‘Three Pillars’ Approach to R2P. Our research provides empirical findings surrounding the process of police-building in these states. It points to the …
