High Muscle Mitochondrial Volume And Aerobic Capacity In A Small Marsupial (Sminthopsis Crassicaudata) Reveals Flexible Links Between Energy-Use Levels In Mammals, Terence Dawson, Koa Webster, Enhua Lee, William A. Buttemer

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

We investigated the muscle structure–function relationships that underlie the aerobic capacity of an insectivorous, small (~15 g) marsupial, Sminthopsis crassicaudata (Family: Dasyuridae), to obtain further insight into energy use patterns in marsupials relative to those in placentals, their sister clade within the Theria (advanced mammals). Disparate hopping marsupials (Suborder Macropodiformes), a kangaroo (Macropus rufus) and a rat-kangaroo (Bettongia penicillata), show aerobic capabilities as high as those of ‘athletic’ placentals. Equivalent muscle mitochondrial volumes and cardiovascular features support these capabilities. We examined S. crassicaudata to determine whether highly developed aerobic capabilities occur elsewhere in marsupials, rather than being restricted to the …

Convex Hypersurfaces With Pinched Principal Curvatures And Flow Of Convex Hypersurfaces By High Powers Of Curvature, Ben Andrews, James Mccoy Jan 2012

Convex Hypersurfaces With Pinched Principal Curvatures And Flow Of Convex Hypersurfaces By High Powers Of Curvature, Ben Andrews, James Mccoy

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

We consider convex hypersurfaces for which the ratio of principal curvatures at each point is bounded by a function of the maximum principal curvature with limit 1 at infinity. We prove that the ratio of circumradius to inradius is bounded by a function of the circumradius with limit 1 at zero. We apply this result to the motion of hypersurfaces by arbitrary speeds which are smooth homogeneous functions of the principal curvatures of degree greater than one. For smooth, strictly convex initial hypersurfaces with ratio of principal curvatures sufficiently close to one at each point, we prove that solutions remain …

Using aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase/suppressor tRNA pairs derived from Methanocaldococcus jannaschii, an Escherichia coli cell-free protein production system affords proteins with site-specifically incorporated unnatural amino acids (UAAs) in high yields through the use of optimized amber suppressor tRNACUA opt and optimization of reagent concentrations. The efficiency of the cell-free system allows the incorporation of trifluoromethyl-phenylalanine using a polyspecific synthetase evolved previously for p-cyanophenylalanine, and the incorporation of UAAs at two different sites of the same protein without any re-engineering of the E. coli cells used to make the cell-free extract.

Using A Micro-Uav For Ultra-High Resolution Multi-Sensor Observations Of Antarctic Moss Beds, Arko Lucieer, Sharon Robinson, Darren Turner, Steve Harwin, Josh Kelcey

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

This study is the first to use an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for mapping moss beds in Antarctica. Mosses can be used as indicators for the regional effects of climate change. Mapping and monitoring their extent and health is therefore important. UAV aerial photography provides ultra-high resolution spatial data for this purpose. We developed a technique to extract an extremely dense 3D point cloud from overlapping UAV aerial photography based on structure from motion (SfM) algorithms. The combination of SfM and patch-based multi-view stereo image vision algorithms resulted in a 2 cm resolution digital terrain model (DTM). This detailed topographic …

Inelastic Stability Analysis Of High Strength Rectangular Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Slender Beam-Columns, Vipulkumar Ishvarbhai Patel, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

There is relatively little numerical study on the behavior of eccentrically loaded high strength rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) slender beam-columns with large depth-to-thickness ratios, which may undergo local and global buckling. This paper presents a multi scale numerical model for simulating the interaction local and global buckling behavior of hlgh strength thin-walled rectangular CFST slender beam-columns under eccentric loading. The effects of progressive local buckling are taken into account in the mesoscale model based on fiber element formulations. Computational algorithms based on the Muller's method are developed to obtain complete load-deflection responses of CFST slender beam-columns at the macroscale …

Microstructural Evolution During Gaseous Hydrogen Charging Of Zircaloy-4 Processed By High-Pressure Torsion: A Comparative Study, Zhiyang Wang, Huijun Li, Ulf Garbe, Mark D. Callaghan, Yanbo Wang, Xiaozhou Liao

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The original and high-pressure torsion (HPT) processed Zircaloy-4 materials were hydrided using gaseous hydrogen charging at different hydrogen pressures (10, 15 and 20 atm). The phase and microstructural evolutions of the samples during hydriding were characterized. It showed that when hydriding at the identical conditions, more hydrides tended to form in the HPT samples compared to that of the original ones. At a hydrogen pressure of 20 atm, the HPT sample was completely converted to ε-ZrH2 while some δ-ZrH1.66 hydrides (volume fraction ~5.73%) were present in the material without HPT preprocessing. The HPT samples exhibited high potential for the hydride …

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

One of the most critical aspects in the preparation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)/ conducting polymer hybrid electrodes is to improve the energy density without seriously deteriorating their high power capability. Here, we report a ‘‘skeleton/skin’’ strategy for the preparation of freestanding, thin and flexible SWCNT/polyaniline (PANI) hybrid films by a simple in situ electrochemical polymerization method using directly grown SWCNT films with a continuous reticulate structure as template. In situ electrochemical polymerization can achieve effective deposition of PANI onto the surface of SWCNT bundles in the films and control the morphology and microstructure of the SWCNT/PANI hybrid films. In …

Nonlinear Analysis Of Biaxially Loaded High Strength Rectangular Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Slender Beam-Columns, Part Ii: Applications, Vipulkumar Ishvarbhai Patel, Qing Quan Liang, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents the verification and applications of a numerical model developed for biaxially loaded high strength thin-walled rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) slender beamcolumns with local buckling effects. The accuracy of the numerical model is established by comparisons of numerical results with existing experimental data. The verified numerical model is employed to investigate the effects of four parameters including concrete compressive strength, loading eccentricity, depth-to-thickness ratio and columns slenderness on the strength reduction factor and steel contribution ratio of CFST slender beam-columns under biaxial bending. The results obtained indicate that increasing each of the four parameters decreases the strength …

Double Space-Time Transmit Diversity For Very High Data Rate Mb-Ofdm Uwb Systems, Ngoc P. Le, Le C. Tran, Farzad Safaei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we investigate a multiband-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) system with very high data rates (VHDR) of several gigabits per second (Gbps). We propose a DSTTD-based VHDR MB-OFDM UWB system by incorporating a double space-time transmit diversity (DSTTD) scheme into the conventional MB-OFDM UWB system. At the receiver, an efficient soft-demapper that takes into consideration the noise enhancement due to a zero-forcing equalization is developed. Numerical simulations of the proposed system at a very high data rate of 2.Gbps over the IEEE 802.15.3a channel models are implemented. The simulation results show that this system could achieve …

Performance Analysis Of Distribution Networks Under High Penetration Of Solar Pv, M J. E Alam, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Darmawan Sutanto, L Elder, A Baitch

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Integration of solar photovoltaic (PV) resources into distribution networks changes the normally expected network behaviour by injecting real power into the point of connection. Depending on the characteristics and setup of the PV inverter, reactive power could also be injected into the network. The impact will depend on the control strategy adopted for reactive power injection. Typically, solar PV units are installed at low voltage (LV) level in distribution networks. Cluster based installation of numerous PV inverters in the LV level will impact the operation of both the host LV network and the upstream medium voltage network. With random variations …

Hydrogen-Induced Microstructure, Texture And Mechanical Property Evolutions In A High-Pressure Torsion Processed Zirconium Alloy, Zhiyang Wang, Ulf Garbe, Huijun Li, Andrew J. Studer, Robert P. Harrison, Mark D. Callaghan, Yanbo Wang, Xiaozhou Liao

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The gaseous hydriding-induced evolutions of the microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of Zircaloy-4 processed by high-pressure torsion (HPT) were assessed. Much δ-ZrH1.66 precipitation at 15 atm (21%) incurred significant hardening of vacuum-annealed HPT samples, and pure ε-ZrH2 obtained at 20 atm showed a superior microhardness of 470 HV0.3 and a low fracture toughness of 0.63 MPa m1/2. The δ-hydrides presented strong (1 1 1) texture and followed the (0 0 0 1)α-Zr//{1 1 1}δ-ZrH1.66 orientation relationship with the α-Zr matrix. During hydriding, α-Zr recrystallization texture was developed from the initial deformation texture.

Automated Offline Programming For Robotic Welding System With High Degree Of Freedoms, Zengxi Pan, Joseph Polden, Nathan P. Larkin, Stephen Van Duin, John Norrish

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Although robotics based flexible automation is an intriguing prospect for small to median enterprises in the era of the global competition, the complexity of programming remains one of the major hurdles limiting its applications. This paper presents an automated offline programming (AOLP) method to address this issue. AOLP is software that automatically plans and programs for a robotic welding system with high Degree of Freedoms (DOFs). It takes CAD model as input, and is able to generate the complete robotic welding code without any further programming effort.

Understanding The Behavior Of Advanced High-Strength Steels Using Atom Probe Tomography, E V. Pereloma, Hossein Beladi, Laichang Zhang, Ilana Timokhina

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The key evidence for understanding the mechanical behavior of advanced high strength steels was provided by atom probe tomography (APT). Chemical overstabilization of retained austenite (RA) leading to the limited transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect was deemed to be the main factor responsible for the low ductility of nanostructured bainitic steel. Appearance of the yield point on the stress-strain curve of prestrained and bake-hardened transformation-induced plasticity steel is due to the unlocking from weak carbon atmospheres of newly formed during prestraining dislocations.

Thermodynamic Analysis Of A High-Yield Biochemical Process For Biofuel Production, M Imroz Sohel, Michael W. Jack

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of a high-yield biochemical process for biofuel production from lignocelluosic biomass based on a previously proposed process. Unlike the standard biochemical process, which ferments sugar intermediates to ethanol, the process under consideration converts sugars to acetic acid which is esterified and hydrogenated to produce ethanol. This process has a significantly higher yield and produces no carbon dioxide. However, we find that the thermodynamic efficiency of the process is not increased in proportion to the yield gain. An additional survey of various biofuel production processes showed no direct correlation between yield and thermodynamic efficiency. This …

Improvements In Dose Calculation Accuracy For Small Off-Axis Targets In High Dose Per Fraction Tomotherapy, Nicholas Hardcastle, Adam Bayliss, Jeannie Wong, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Wolfgang A. Tome

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Purpose: A recent field safety notice from TomoTherapy detailed the underdosing of small, off-axis targets when receiving high doses per fraction. This is due to angular undersampling in the dose calculation gantry angles. This study evaluates a correction method to reduce the underdosing, to be implemented in the current version (v4.1) of the TomoTherapy treatment planning software. Methods: The correction method, termed "Super Sampling" involved the tripling of the number of gantry angles from which the dose is calculated during optimization and dose calculation. Radiochromic film was used to measure the dose to small targets at various off-axis distances receiving …

A Low Cost Soft Mapper For Turbo Equalization With High Order Modulation, Licai Fang, Qinghua Guo, Defeng (David) Huang, Sven Nordholm

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In an MMSE based turbo equalization system, a soft mapper calculates the symbol mean and variance based on extrinsic Log-Likelihood-Ratios (LLRs) information coming from a Soft-Input Soft-Output (SISO) decoder. In this paper, we investigate the complexity of this module, and in particular, we employ a 3-segment linear approximation approach to calculate the mean and variance of data symbols from LLRs. For FPGA and VLSI implementation, we propose novel piecewise linear functions which map LLR to the mean and variance directly without the use of any two-variable-input multipliers. Simulation results for 16-QAM and 64-QAM show that the no multiplier approach has …

High Court Was Wrong To Stop 'War Crimes' Extradition, Gregory L. Rose

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

In 2005, the Australian government and ALP opposition stated their firm principled position on war criminals: extradite or prosecute. War criminals are not welcome to live freely in Australia. As the High Court has recently blocked a war crimes extradition, it has left the government with a difficult potential prosecution.

Hungary had requested the Commonwealth government to extradite Charles Zentai to stand trial for a war crime committed in 1944. Allegedly, while a member of the Hungarian Royal Armed Forces, Zentai recognised Peter Balazs, an 18-year old-youth, as a Jew who was out on the street without wearing the yellow …

In this paper, the application of space time block codes in a very high data rate multiband-OFDM ultra-wideband (VHDR MB-OFDM UWB) system, where the Modified Dual Carrier Modulation (MDCM) scheme and Low Density Parity Check codes are deployed, is investigated. First, we present a new table-based mapping approach and derive soft-demapping expressions for the MDCM scheme. We then propose a space-time-frequency coded VHDR MB-OFDM UWB system by incorporating space time block codes into the conventional VHDR MB-OFDM UWB system. Numerical simulations of the system supporting a data rate of 1Gbps over the IEEE 802.15.3a channel models are implemented. The simulation …
