Dietary Shiitake Mushroom (Lentinus Edodes) Prevents Fat Deposition And Lowers Triglyceride In Rats Fed A High-Fat Diet, D Handayani, J-Z Chen, Barbara J. Meyer, Xu-Feng Huang

High-fat diet (HFD) induces obesity. This study examined the effects of Shiitake mushroom on the prevention of alterations of plasma lipid profiles, fat deposition, energy efficiency, and body fat index induced by HFD. Rats were given a low, medium, and high (7, 20, 60 g/kg = LD-M, MD-M, HD-M) Shiitake mushroom powder in their high-fat (50% in kcal) diets for 6 weeks. The results showed that the rats on the HD-M diet had the lowest body weight gain compared to MD-M and LD-M groups (P < 0.05). The total fat deposition was significantly lower (-35%, P < 0.05) in rats fed an HD-M diet than that of HFD group. Interestingly, plasma triacylglycerol (TAG) level was significantly lower (-55%, P < 0.05) in rats on HD-M than HFD. This study also revealed the existence of negative correlations between the amount of Shiitake mushroom supplementation and body weight gain, plasma TAG, and total fat masses.

Binding of the urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) to its cell-surface-bound receptor uPAR and upregulation of the plasminogen activation system (PAS) correlates with increased metastasis and poor prognosis in several tumour types. Disruptors of the uPA:uPAR interaction represent promising anti-tumour/metastasis agents and several approaches have been explored for this purpose, including the use of small molecule antagonists. Two highly potent non-peptidic antagonists 1 and 2 (IC50 1 = 0.8 nM, IC50 2 = 33 nM) from the patent literature were reportedly identified using competition assays employing radiolabelled uPAR-binding uPA fragments and appeared as useful pharmacological tools for studying the PAS. Introduction. This study aimed to evaluate the screening performance of different measures of adiposity: body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) for high metabolic risk in a sample of adolescents. Methods. A cross-sectional school-based study was conducted on 517 adolescents aged 15-18, from the Azorean Islands, Portugal. We measured fasting glucose, insulin, total cholesterol (TC), HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, and systolic blood pressure. HOMA and TC/HDL-C ratio were calculated. For each of these variables, a Z-score was computed by age and sex. A metabolic risk score (MRS) was constructed by summing the Z-scores of all individual risk factors. …

A selection of nine heats of line pipe steel from the same project with different Ti and N content were used to evaluate the effects of Ti/N ratio on weld zone microstructure, hardness and prior austenite grain size (PAGS) in the coarse grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ). It was shown that the microstructure of the base metal (BM) mainly consisted of fine grained polygonal ferrite with fine islands of pearlite. The weld metal (WM) microstructure was predominantly acicular ferrite with a small volume fraction of pro-eutectoid ferrite. The Australian Government has released an "implementation" study for high speed rail (or HSR) on the east coast with a further study to follow. The proposal looks at corridors between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. It includes the option of three-hour travel times between Sydney and Melbourne, with tickets costing around $100. With the projected price of the project starting at around $60 billion, and Australia's chequered history with HSR, it is not unreasonable to ask whether the project will commence. In this case, would Sydney to Newcastle take preference over Sydney to Melbourne?

Two experiments evaluated the apparent metabolisable energy (AME) values for cereal grains fed with and without a blend of xylanase and phytase enzyme products to broiler chickens. The first experiment involved 30 high screenings grains (10 wheats, 11 barleys, 3 triticales, and 6 sorghums). The second experiment involved 50 grains (20 wheats, 13 barleys, 3 triticales and 14 sorghums) donated by commercial companies throughout Australia. Each experiment included "connectivity" grains used in previous experiments that contributed to the AusScan near infrared reflectance (NIR) calibration database. High strength, thermo-mechanically treated steels often require very careful control of welding procedures to ensure freedom from hydrogen assisted cold cracking (HACC) in the weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ) whilst avoiding undue loss of heat affected zone strength. In practice this leads to restricted operating envelopes and the requirement for rigorous procedure management. An alternative approach is the use of austenitic welding consumables but whilst this may be expected to expand the process parameter envelope its use is often restricted by adherence to procedures previously developed for ferritic consumables. The influences of lattice strain on the superconducting critical current density Jc and critical transition temperature Tc in pure MgB2 and a SiC-MgB2 composite made by the diffusion process are explored, based on the thermal expansion coefficients and the low temperature effects on Raman scattering. The strong thermal strain provides a strong flux pinning force for the supercurrents at the interfaces between SiC and MgB2. The high Tc of SiC-MgB2 is also discussed according to the expanded lattice and Raman characteristics.

High Speed Rail or HSR with electric passenger trains using steel wheels on steel rails with maximum operating speeds of 250km/h or more is now operational in 12 countries. It is now under review in Australia. The paper considers energy use on the 10 top routes of the Melbourne-Sydney and Sydney-Brisbane corridors and finds that HSR was in place by 2020, HSR could reduce the use of aviation fuel by over 450 million litres each year. External costs and Sydney airport issues are also noted.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles of culture and motivation in the occupational decisions of senior high school students attending private schools. A theoretical framework guided the study. A questionnaire was administered to 492 Grade 11 students attending a stratified random sample of six independent (private) schools located in the Sydney (Australia) metropolitan area. Structural equation modelling was performed on the data collected. The major findings of the study centre on a new model of vocational decision-making, which provides empirical support for relationships between cultural orientation variables, expectancy-value variables, and related constructs. A range of Ultra-Thin Cast Strip (UCS) sheet steels with elevated residual levels was produced via the CASTRIP twin drum casting method at Nucor Steel, Indiana. This paper examines the influence of elevated levels of copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorous on mechanical properties, surface quality, processing, and weldability of UCS sheet steel products produced by the CASTRIP process. Increased levels of copper and phosphorous were found to strengthen UCS sheet steel due to solid solution strengthening but chromium and nickel did not. A new idea is investigated in this study to reduce the cover spalling of high-strength concrete columns: installing relatively cheap materials such as household fly screen and wire mesh in the formwork of RC columns. Three materials were chosen in this study: fiberglass fly mesh (FGFM), standard aluminum fly mesh (SAFM), and 12:7 x 12:7 galvanized steel wire mesh (S12.7 WM). A total of 16 cylindricalspecimens with a length of 925 mm and a diameter of 205 mm were cast and tested under concentric, eccentric, and pure bending loading. A zero liquid discharge treatment system for the disposal of saline industrial liquid waste was proposed and evaluated in this study. Microfiltration was selected as a pretreatment process after a qualitative assessment against `conventional¿ options. Two reverse osmosis (RO) membranes were examined for the pre-concentration of liquid waste using a laboratory scale membrane rig. The results were used to validate the use of the ROSA simulation package. ROSA simulation was conducted with liquid waste having a range of salinity of up to 100,000 ppm of total dissolved solid (TDS). An elaborately designed bilayer consisting of superconducting YBa2Cu3O7-6 (YBCO) and ferromagnetic La0.67Sr0.33MnO3-6 (LSMO) was prepared on a single crystal LaAlO3 substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), with a view to understanding the mechanism behind the influence of superconductor/ferromagnet proximity on the critical current density, Jc. The present bilayer system shows significant modifications in Jc, as evidenced by the suppressed decay of its temperature dependence, as well as the crossing behavior of the magnetic field dependence of Jc at high temperatures. This study investigates the effect of temperature on the behaviour of concrete cylinders wrapped with Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP). The study used nine concrete cylinders in three groups; the first group was exposed to room temperature of approximately 20ºC, the second group was exposed to a cyclic temperature with a temperature range of 20ºC to 70ºC, and the third group was exposed to a prolonged temperature of 70ºC. Suites of criteria specifying ecological, biological, social, economic, and governance properties enable the systematic identification of sites and networks of high biodiversity value, and can support balancing ecological and socioeconomic objectives of biodiversity conservation in terrestrial and marine spatial planning. We describe designs of suites of ecological, governance and socioeconomic criteria to comprehensively cover manifestations of biodiversity, from genotypes to biomes; compensate for taxonomic and spatial gaps in available datasets; balance biases resulting from conventionally-employed narrow criteria suites focusing on rare, endemic and threatened species; plan for climate change effects on biodiversity; and optimize the ecological and administrative networking of …

Little research has examined mechanisms leading to the utilization of compulsory physical education content in future contexts. This study tested a model in which motivation to be in physical education class functions as a predisposition influencing perceptions of teacher communication of content relevance, perceptions of course relevance to one’s personal life, affect for physical education and intentions to apply class content in the future. High school students (N = 636) enrolled in compulsory physical education classes completed questionnaires assessing each of these variables. NaB3H8 has advantages over NaBH4 and NH3BH3, two most widely studied chemical hydrides for hydrogen storage via hydrolysis. NaB3H8 has an extraordinary high solubility in water and thus possesses a high theoretical capacity of 10.5 wt% H via hydrolysis, in contrast to 7.5 wt% for NaBH4 and 5.1 wt% for NH3BH3. NaB3H8 is reasonably stable in water which makes it unnecessary to add corrosive NaOH as a stabilizer as the case for NaBH4. Furthermore, hydrolysis of NaB3H8 can be catalyzed by a Co-based catalyst with fast kinetics that is comparable to Ru-based catalysts. Therefore, cost-effective hydrolysis of NaB3H8 is possible …
