Ballet It's Too Whitey: Discursive Hierarchies Of High School Dance Spaces And The Constitution Of Embodied Feminine Subjectivities, Matthew Atencio, Jan Wright

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

This article investigates (i) how the structuring practices and meanings associated with dance classes at an inner‐city American high school operated as institutional spaces (re)producing ‘dividing practices’ that supported racial and classed hierarchies; (ii) how these racist structures were created and maintained relative to dominant notions of embodiment, ‘race’, social class, femininity, and dance; and (iii) the way these dominant practices and hierarchies were managed by two ‘black’ young women at the high school in order to construct particular modes of self‐governance. The analysis suggests that educators be attuned to the role that spaces play in creating particular types of …

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This paper describes a novel controller for a High Temperature Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (HTSSMES) that can ensure (a) fast return of energy to the superconducting coil under constant current mode and (b) a constant and sinusoidal input supply current irrespective of the varying load demand with and without harmonics. A special feature of this controller is its ability to smoothly charge the superconducting coil using constant current charging so that it can be ready for the next discharging operation as soon as possible. Analysis of the circuit operation under hysteresis control is presented in details. Simulation and experimental results …

Not Just Any Volunteers: Segmenting The Market To Attract The High Contributors, Melanie J. Randle, Sara Dolnicar Jan 2009

Not Just Any Volunteers: Segmenting The Market To Attract The High Contributors, Melanie J. Randle, Sara Dolnicar

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

Growing competition in the third sector has resulted in nonprofit organizations making more sophisticated use of marketing techniques to attract volunteers. Not only are organizations attempting to attract more volunteers but increasingly the focus is shifting to attracting the right type of volunteers, or those who will contribute the most hours. This study segments the volunteering market by number of hours contributed in the past 12 months, and identifies significant differences between the characteristics of high-contribution and low-contribution volunteers. High-contribution volunteers are found to (a) exhibit distinctive sociodemographic characteristics; (b) have a greater number, and broader range, of motivations for …

Development And Performance Analysis Of A Saturated Core High Temperature Superconducting Fault Current Limiter, Jeffrey W. Moscrop, Scott Hopkins

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Recent international activity in the field of high voltage Fault Current Limiters (FCLs) has intensified since the North American blackout of 2003. A number of national and international peak body groups in the USA, Europe and Japan have been established to assess the need for FCLs and the issues associated with their design, specification, operation, protection and integration into the electricity grids. This paper details the development of a prototype 3-phase saturated core High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) FCL in Australia. Through experimental analysis, the performance of this device is characterised in terms of DC saturation, steady state performance, and fault …

Design And Development Of A 3-Phase Saturated Core High Temperature Superconducting Fault Current Limiter, Jeffrey W. Moscrop, Frank Darmann

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The occurrence of fault currents and system sensitivity to fault currents are both increasing in modern power systems. Along with extensive damage to network hardware, considerable consumer losses (due to network unavailability) can result from fault current events. One device that is designed to reduce the impact of fault currents and increase network availability is the fault current limiter (FCL). This paper describes the design and development of a 3-phase saturated core high temperature superconducting (HTS) FCL. This particular type of FCL exhibits negligible power losses during the un-faulted state and also provides instantaneous reaction and recovery during fault events. …

  • Thermodynamic modeling is valuable tool to predict phase equilibria in high temperature metals processing
  • Thermo chemical packages makes modeling easier, but the fundamental knowledge such as how we determine the phase, species, and activity behaviour are the intellectual aspects
  • An example in magnesium impurities illustrate both the predictive power of thermodynamic modelling but also the dilemmas associated with solution behaviour

Cyclic Deformation Of Advanced High-Strength Steels: Mechanical Behavior And Microstructural Analysis, Timothy B. Hilditch, Ilana B. Timokhina, Leigh T. Robertson, E V. Pereloma, Peter D. Hodgson

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The fatigue properties of multiphase steels are an important consideration in the automotive industry. The different microstructural phases present in these steels can influence the strain life and cyclic stabilized strength of the material due to the way in which these phases accommodate the applied cyclic strain. Fully reversed strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue tests have been used to determine the mechanical fatigue performance of a dual-phase (DP) 590 and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) 780 steel, with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) used to examine the deformed microstructures. It is shown that the higher strain life and cyclic stabilized strength of the TRIP steel …

This study does not support the notion developed from cross cultural advertising literature that members of a particular cultural group will prefer a particular message advertising appeal if it reflects values that are congruent to its culture. An experimental design is applied to examine whether emotional/ high context appeals (n=120) are more persuasive than factual/ low context appeals (n=124) among target groups from collectivist cultural backgrounds. Analysis of Chinese smokers’ pre-and-post intentions to contact the Chinese Quitline after viewing print advertisements determined that there was no difference between the two ad groups’ shift scores. The common use of direct translations …
