Reef Development At High-Latitudes During Multiple Interglacial Cycles: New Evidence From Lord Howe Island, Southwestern Pacific, David Kennedy, Colin D. Woodroffe, J -X Zhao

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Reef development during past Interglacial periods, when sea level and sea surface temperatures were higher than today, provide unique insights into how reef systems may respond to projected human-induced global warming. Lord Howe Island currently represents the southernmost limit of reef development in the Pacific. Reef growth of Pleistocene age has been inferred to have occurred around the island, and this paper provides the fi rst detailed descriptions on the character of this development. Two phases of reef growth are identifi ed, which occurred as isolated fringing reefs along the edge of the basaltic hills of the island. Uranium-series dating …

The Another Road to Safety (ARS) program, an alternative response intervention, is targeted to zip codes with the highest rates of child abuse and neglect reporting in Alameda County. This program takes a new approach in child welfare by attempting to intervene with families early, to prevent future incidence and escalation of child maltreatment. Families who are reported to the Alameda County hotline are referred to the ARS program if they meet the following criteria: screened as no investigation need (i.e., low risk); child age 0-5 or a pregnant mother in the home; and residence in certain designated zip codes …

Modelling Of High Strength Concrete Reinforced With Helical Reinforcement, Muhammad N. S Hadi Jan 2007

Modelling Of High Strength Concrete Reinforced With Helical Reinforcement, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

This paper investigates the behaviour of high strength concrete beams reinforced with helical reinforcement in the compression zone. Using helical reinforcement increases the strength and ductility of high strength concrete. The finite element packages ANSYS and Strand7 have been used to model high strength concrete beams with helical pitches of 25, 50, 75, 100 and 150 mm. Three dimensional elements were used to model the concrete and bar elements to model the steel.Special care had to be taken when modelling the helices. The results of finite element analyses were compared with experimental results which showed a good correlation.

This article introduces an effective, inexpensive, and industrially oriented approach to produce carbon-coated Si nanocomposites as high-capacity anode materials for use in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Initially, nanosized Si particles (nm) were mixed in a citric acid/ethanol solution via ultrasonication. This mixture was further spray-pyrolyzed in air at low processing temperature (300-500 C), resulting in a homogeneous layer of carbon coating on the surface of the spheroidal Si nanoparticles. The effects of the processing temperature on the amorphous carbon content, the thickness of the carbon-coating layer, and the homogeneity of the carbon coating were studied in detail. These parameters strongly influenced …

Ductile Ultrafine-Grained Ti-Based Alloys With High Yield Strength, Lai-Chang Zhang, Hai-Bo Lu, Christine Mickel, Jurgen Eckert

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The authors report on ductile ultrafine-grained (Ti0.72Fe0.28)100−xTax (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 4) alloys with not only high fracture strength but simultaneously high yield strength exceeding 2000 MPa along with distinct plasticity, which are superior to high-strength Ti-based bulk metallic glasses and bimodal composites. All alloys mainly consist of β-Ti and FeTi solid solutions but display different microstructures. The alloys exhibit a high fracture strength >2500 MPa and a high yield strength >2000 MPa as well as large plasticity of ∼ 5%–7.5%. The microstructure-property correlation of these ultrafine-grained alloys is discussed.

Anisotropic Atomic Motions In High-Resolution Protein Crystallography Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Conrad J. Burden, Aaron J. Oakley

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using empirical force fields are popular for the study of proteins. In this work, we compare anisotropic atomic fluctuations in nanosecond-timescale MD simulations with those observed in an ultra-high-resolution crystal structure of crambin. In order to make our comparisons, we have developed a compact graphical technique for assessing agreement between spatial atomic distributions determined by MD simulations and observed anisotropic temperature factors.

The aim of this study was to measure the effects of 12 weeks of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplementation on body composition, RER, RMR, blood lipid profiles, insulin sensitivity and appetite in exercising, normal-weight persons. In this double-blind, randomised, controlled trial, sixty-two non-obese subjects (twenty-five men, thirty-seven women) received either 3.9 g/d CLA or 3.9 g high-oleic acid sunflower oil for 12 weeks. Prior to and after 12 weeks of supplementation, oral glucose tolerance, blood lipid concentrations, body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and computerised tomography scans), RMR, resting and exercising RER and appetite were measured. There were no significant effects …

Deformation-Induced Nanoscale High-Temperature Phase Separation In Co-Fe Alloys At Room Temperature, Laichang Zhang, M Calin, F Paturaud, C Mickel, J Eckert

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Instead of applying severe plastic deformation, high-temperature heat treatment or high pressure, grain refinement and high-temperature phase separation induced by deformation in single-phase body-centered-cubic (bcc) coarse-grained Co–Fe alloys have been achieved by simple room-temperature compression. The alloys exhibit large plasticity over 140% without fracture. Phase separation from the bcc phase to nanoscale face-centered-cubic Fe and Co phases, which generally occurs at high temperature above ∼ 1150 K, is formed in the deformed samples. The possible mechanisms are shear deformation and deformation-enhanced atomic diffusion rather than the temperature rise during deformation

With power systems subject to an ever-increasing variety of load types, power quality remains of concern to both utilities and consumers alike. Some of the most concerning issues to users of sensitive equipment include voltage sags, supply interruption and current harmonics. This paper describes a comprehensive power quality device that can be designed to compensate for harmonic load currents and mains voltage variations in a system, as well as providing mains failure backup for smaller critical system loads. The design process described integrates high capacity high temperature Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) technology with Active Power Filter (APF) switching technology …

Effect Of High Pressure During The Fabrication On The Thermal And Mechanical Properties Of Amorphous Ni60nb40 Particle-Reinforced Al-Based Metal Matrix Composites, Peng Yu, Shankar Venkataraman, Jayanta Das, Laichang Zhang, Wenyong Zhang, Jurgen Eckert Jan 2007

Effect Of High Pressure During The Fabrication On The Thermal And Mechanical Properties Of Amorphous Ni60nb40 Particle-Reinforced Al-Based Metal Matrix Composites, Peng Yu, Shankar Venkataraman, Jayanta Das, Laichang Zhang, Wenyong Zhang, Jurgen Eckert

Ni60Nb40 metallic glass particles, prepared by mechanical alloying, were used to fabricate Al–30 wt% Ni60Nb40 metal matrix composites (MMCs) at 823 K by sintering, hot pressing, and hot extrusion. The Ni60Nb40 reinforcements remained amorphous in all the MMCs fabricated by the different methods. Compression tests revealed that the Young’s modulus and yield strength of the MMCs produced by hot-pressing and hot-extrusion are higher than those for the sintered specimens. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) annealing of the as-produced MMCs at 913 K revealed there are severe interfacial reactions between the Al matrix …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The purpose of this study was to investigate an optimal readout for a high-resolution compact gamma camera with maximum performance in crystal element identifications. The compact camera is based on a pixellated Nal(Tl) crystal with 1.2 mm pixel size coupled to a 5" Hamamatsu R3292 PSPMT. A conventional resistive-chain readout was initially developed for the camera. Then a novel subtractive resistive readout developed was utilized to optimize the performance of the camera. The performance of the camera was evaluated by raw flood images of a 137Cs source. The results show that the conventional resistive readout results in a significant shrinkage …
