This study constructs a collective story of Saudi female expats (SFEs) as they navigate the transition from their conservative society in Saudi Arabia to a new one in Australia. It examines the impact of the SFE’s Arabic background and their English learning experiences in Australia on their lives and explores SFEs perceptions of their self-representation in the social and educational milieu in Australia. Additionally, it sheds light on the intricate relationships between language, culture, gender and self-representation.

This poses significant challenges for analysing and modelling short-lived tropospheric trace gases, especially carbon monoxide (CO). Fuel load is one of the primary determinants for fire behaviour in Australian forests. In South-Eastern Australia, ground and elevated fuel loads are generally considered highest at 15-20 years post-fire. Current methodology for predicting fuel load often relies on low resolution vegetation maps, simple time-since-fire relationships, and often incorrectly used ground-fuel models for elevated and canopy fuels. Using the rich and largely unexplored archival records of the Deakin sisters, this thesis presents the first in-depth collective biography of their lives. While they were the daughters of Australian Prime Minister, Alfred Deakin (1856-1919), the Deakin sisters, Ivy (1883-1970), Stella (1886-1976) and Vera (1891-1978), are not the subjects of this historical examination because of their connection to a powerful man. This thesis aims to offer a better understanding as to why road cycling remains one of Australia’s most popular leisure activities, despite a reported 38 road cyclists killed annually and another 12,000 seriously injured (AIHW, 2019). By investigating cycling sensations of the body and cycling, this thesis responds to calls from feminist geographical scholarship to embraced embodied approaches. This thesis explores Chinese furniture factories operating in Australia over the period from 1880 to 1930, concentrating on Sydney and Melbourne. Established in the wake of the Australian gold rushes of the 1850s and 1860s by migrants from the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong and their descendants, these factories became an integral part of Australia’s furniture industry. Owing to a vision of Australia as a bastion of ‘white’ industry and labour, Chinese furniture factories became the focus of numerous racialised political campaigns and legislative restrictions. Although published here for decades, crónicas are a form of multicultural writing that remain practically unknown to Australian literary scholarship. The War on Terror, initiated by the US Government under George W. Bush, reintroduced torture as an overt tool of the state. The Australian Government was heavily implicated in colluding and covering up the US torture program. Drawing on a model of outrage management, newspaper articles from 2002-2012 reveal extensive evidence that government officials, their agents, and the media, utilised methods that served to reduce outrage over the use of torture in the War on Terror. These tactics not only inhibited outrage, but promoted acceptance of torture as a legitimate security tool in the post 9/11 era.

Australian rivers are generally considered to have high flow variability with large differences between baseflow and flood flows as well as large differences in the volume of floods of various return periods. This comparative study systematically assesses the hydrology of Snowy Mountain rivers to determine whether snowmelt rivers demonstrate similar discharge characteristics to their non-snowmelt counterparts. Historical and current gauging data was used to investigate flood frequency and flow scaling relationships for unregulated alluvial and semi-alluvial rivers in eighteen Snowy Mountain rivers and fifteen temperate east coast and semi-arid non-snowmelt rivers.

It is generally considered that sumptuary law is an archaic form of governmental intervention that targeted the personal lives of people living in the early modern period in Europe, and has no modern significance. This thesis examines the post Federation period, between 1901 and 1927, to reveal that the sumptuary impulse was alive and well in modern Australia. Reconstruction of palaeo-sea levels provides a framework for determining Quaternary ice volumes and assisting in modelling predictions of future sea-level change. Commonly, records of palaeo-sea level derived from past shorelines only extend back to the last interglacial, marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e, due to erosion of older coastal successions by successive sealevel changes on tectonically stable coastlines.
