Articulating And Comparing Standards Through Benchmarking Of Assessment, Sara Booth, Anne Melano, Heather Sainsbury, Lynn Woodley

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The universities of Deakin, Tasmania (UTAS) and Wollongong (UOW) are not aligned with any university groups or networks. This paper presents their cross-institutional benchmarking relationship as a case study in building the necessary trust, collaboration and shared methodology. The partnership was distinguished by the way it tapped into a collegial quality improvement culture. It had its genesis at the 2009 AUQF conference and the partners adapted and ‘test-drove’ a framework previously developed by an ALTC Teaching Quality Indicators Project team. UTAS and UOW had formerly been involved in a trial benchmarking project on academic transition support in 2009 and extended …

Poster Presentation:An Effective Assessment For Large Communication Classes?, Swapna Koshy

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

This paper sums up the results of action research conducted by the author to evaluate the efficacy of using Poster Presentations as an assignment for a large communication class. The increase in class sizes, even in communication courses, had prompted a rethink of the current assessment methods. For the first time in the university posters were used as a means of assessing students’ work. The lecturer conducted descriptive research to assess the feasibility of repeating the assessment in future communication courses. A survey consisting of a sample of 25% of the population was conducted along with several informal interviews. The …

Non-Destructive Assessment Of Rail Track Condition Using Ground Penetrating Radar, L J. Su, Buddhima Indraratna, C Rujikiatkamjorn

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be used to locate interfaces and underground utilities, and evaluate ballast fouling conditions, moisture content and subgrade conditions depending on frequencies of antenna and data processing techniques. In Australia, trial testing on railway sections has been conducted by the railway industry. However, in these trials, testing is only conducted on actual tracks where the relationship between track conditions and the GPR response has not yet been established. In this paper, a full scale model rail track designed and constructed at the University of Wollongong is used to investigate factors that infl uence the GPR data …

Marques, Leonel Santos, Pedro Soares, Rute Santos, Antonio Oliveira-Tavares, Jorge Mota, Joana Carvalho

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Background There has been a growing concern in designing physical activity (PA) programmes for elderly people, since evidence suggests that such health promotion interventions may reduce the deleterious effects of the ageing process. Complete programme evaluations are a necessary prerequisite to continuous quality improvements. Being able to refine, adapt and create tools that are suited to the realities and contexts of PA programmes for the elderly in order to support its continuous improvement is, therefore, crucial. Thus, the aim of this study was to develop a self-assessment tool for PA programmes for the elderly. Methods A 3-round Delphi process was …

An Assessment Tool For E-Government System Performance: A Citizen-Centric Model, Shatha A. Al-Haddad, Peter Hyland, Geoffrey Hubona

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Governments worldwide have, increasingly, implemented e-government initiatives for their potential significant benefits; among which, delivering better services to citizens through increasing citizens' convenience, satisfaction, and independence; and saving their time, effort, and cost. Achieving each benefit is an objective to these governments and fulfilling each objective is considered a critical success factors. Hence, governments need to assess the extent to which they were able to obtain their preset goals. This study merely focuses on the citizens' perspective of the evaluation. However, the literature seems to lack studies that propose such a sufficient evaluation tool that has been reliably validated. Therefore, …

Slope Hazard Assessment On A Coast Road In New South Wales, Australia, M. Hendrickx, R A. Wilson, A T. Moon, I E. Stewart, Phillip N. Flentje

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Lawrence Hargrave Drive was constructed in 1878 and has experienced a continuance of slope failures including rock falls, debris flows and embankment collapses. In 2003 a section of the road was closed for safety reasons. An Alliance between the state government and private industry was formed to develop an engineering solution to reduce the risk to ‘acceptable’ levels. Assessment of slope hazards was completed with the aid of geological mapping, interpretation of aerial photographs, archived government reports, historical photo and newspaper collections and a GIS based landslide inventory. Historical photographs provided important evidence on erosion rates and the size, nature …

An Assessment Of Three Harpacticoid Copepod Species For Use In Ecotoxicological Testing, Daniel J. Ward, Victor Perez-Landa, David A. Spadaro, Stuart L. Simpson, Dianne F. Jolley

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The relatively short life cycles of harpacticoid copepods makes them appropriate animals for use in tests that rapidly assess the #180, sublethal, or chronic effects of sediment contaminants. In this study, four harpacticoid copepod species (Nitocra spinipes, Tisbe tenuimana, Robertgurneya hopkinsi, and Halectinosoma sp.) were isolated from clean marine sediments, and procedures for laboratory culturing were developed. Halectinosoma sp. was abandoned due to handling difficulties. For the remaining species, the influence of food type and quantity on life-cycle progression was assessed. A mixed diet, comprising two species of algae (Tetraselmis sp. and Isochrysis sp.) and fish food (Sera …

Preliminary Assessment Of The Handline (Banca) Fisheries In The Philippines (Fis/2009/033). Final Report, Ronald J. West, Mary Ann Palma, Noel Barut, Elaine Garvilles, Desiderio Ayanan

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The Philippines, with an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.2 million sq. km, including over 7,000 islands, relies on fisheries as one of its major industries, sources of employment and in promoting food security. The hand-line fishery using bancas (or pump boats), catching commercially viable species such as tuna, is a major component of both municipal and commercial fisheries in the Philippines. Hand-line fishing is considered one of the most sustainable forms of fishing in the country. However, the economic significance of the hand-line fishery is increasingly threatened by a number of factors, including poor information on the fishery and …

Sound Assessment Of A Role For Fish Oil In Therapeutics Or Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease Jeopardised By Confused Study Design, Peter L. Mclennan Jan 2011

Sound Assessment Of A Role For Fish Oil In Therapeutics Or Prevention Of Cardiovascular Disease Jeopardised By Confused Study Design, Peter L. Mclennan

Graduate School of Medicine - Papers (Archive)

The study by Galan and colleagues in the SU.FOL.OM3 collaborative group has added further confusion to the omega-3 story, which in this case largely derives from confusion in the study design. Confusion about the likely mechanism of cardiovascular protection and hence expected outcomes; confusion in the subject selection; confusion about the timing of intervention; confusion about the active components of fish oil.

Proposal Of A Methodology For Bridge Condition Assessment, Maria Rashidi, Peter Gibson Jan 2011

Proposal Of A Methodology For Bridge Condition Assessment, Maria Rashidi, Peter Gibson

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

Due to the substantial role of bridges in transportation networks and in accordance with the limited funding for bridge management, remediation strategies have to be prioritised. A conservative bridge assessment will result in unnecessary actions, such as costly bridge strengthening or repairs. On the other hand, any bridge maintenance negligence and delayed actions may lead to heavy future costs or degraded assets. The accuracy of decisions developed by any manager or bridge engineer relies on the accuracy of the bridge condition assessment which emanates from visual inspection. Many bridge rating systems are based on a very subjective procedure and are …

Identifying Links Between Ecosystem Services And Aboriginal Well-Being And Livelihoods In North Australia: Applying The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment Framework, K K. Sangha, J.R.A Butler, Aurelie Delisle, Owen Stanley

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

The livelihoods and well-being of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities in remote and rural northern Australia are dependent upon the ecosystem services provided by tropical ecosystems. The well-being of all Australian citizens is measured by the Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) using socio-economic indicators. In this study we investigated the importance of non-market benefits derived from ecosystem services for Aboriginal well-being. Through a case study with the Mullunburra-Yidinji people in the Wet Tropics, Queensland, we applied the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) framework to identify the links between ecosystem services and the MA’s six constituents of human well-being. The study demonstrated that …

Trustworthiness In Mhealth Information Services: An Assessment Of A Hierarchical Model With Mediating And Moderating Effects Using Partial Least Squares (Pls), Shahriar Akter, John D'Ambra, Pradeep Ray Jan 2011

Trustworthiness In Mhealth Information Services: An Assessment Of A Hierarchical Model With Mediating And Moderating Effects Using Partial Least Squares (Pls), Shahriar Akter, John D'Ambra, Pradeep Ray

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The aim of this research is to advance both the theoretical conceptualization and the empirical validation of trustworthiness in mHealth (mobile health) information services research. Conceptually, it extends this line of research by reframing trustworthiness as a hierarchical, reflective construct, incorporating ability, benevolence, integrity, and predictability. Empirically, it confirms that partial least squares path modeling can be used to estimate the parameters of a hierarchical, reflective model with moderating and mediating effects in a nomological network. The model shows that trustworthiness is a second-order, reflective construct that has a significant direct and indirect impact on continuance intentions in the context …

Tariffs, Subsidies, And Profits: A Re-Assessment Of Structural Change In Australia 1901–39, David Merrett, Simon Ville Jan 2011

Tariffs, Subsidies, And Profits: A Re-Assessment Of Structural Change In Australia 1901–39, David Merrett, Simon Ville

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

We re-interpret the drivers of structural change in Australia from Federation to World War II. Manufacturing increased its relative share of output and employment, the farm sector and mining contracted. Conventional wisdom contends these shifts largely resulted from government policy, particularly increases in trade barriers. We contend that the connection between tariffs and increased profitability is conceptually weak and not supported by extant evidence. We argue that exogenous shifts in consumer preferences, the adoption of new technologies, changing factor proportions, and greater specialisation in manufacturing and services were responsible for manufacturing increasing its share of the economy's resources and output.
