The Learning Thermometer: Closing The Loop Between Teaching, Learning, Wellbeing And Support In Universities, Helen M. Stallman, Sharron King

Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice

The increasing awareness and impact of mental health problems in university students in addition to a need for objective measures of teaching quality provide the impetus for a new approach to supporting students. There is a need for more effective tools that integrate the institutional silos of teaching, learning, support, and wellbeing to help students maximise their educational outcomes. This paper provides an overview of an innovative student-centred tool, The Learning Thermometer, as an efficient and effective way to integrate the institutional silos and embedding student support within the mainstream curriculum. The Learning Thermometer comprises four web-based surveys that …

The Effects Of Presentation Formats On Understanding Financial Accounting: An Experimental Study, Seedwell T.M. Sithole Jun 2016

The Effects Of Presentation Formats On Understanding Financial Accounting: An Experimental Study, Seedwell T.M. Sithole

Australasian Accounting, Business and Finance Journal

Most financial accounting presentations consist of graphs and tables with subtle variations in the way that the associated text is presented. While alternative presentations of tables versus graphs have been widely researched, the impact of text proximity to a graph or table has received little attention. Graphical presentation effectiveness was operationalised as accuracy and mental effort in answering questions of different levels of complexity. Using financial accounting instructional material presented either as a graph and separate text or text embedded in the graph, …

Towards A Theory Of The Ecology Of Reflection: Reflective Practice For Experiential Learning In Higher Education, Marina Harvey, Debra Coulson, Anne Mcmaugh May 2016

Towards A Theory Of The Ecology Of Reflection: Reflective Practice For Experiential Learning In Higher Education, Marina Harvey, Debra Coulson, Anne Mcmaugh

Journal of University Teaching & Learning Practice

Reflective practice is widely adopted across the field of experience-based learning subjects in higher education, including practicums, work-integrated learning, internships, service learning and community participation. This adoption of reflective practice implies that it supports student learning through experience. When reviewing the evidence for the role of reflection for learning, it became evident that not only was there no clear agreement about the definition of reflection, there has been little theoretical development in this area. An integrated participatory action research and ecological approach was adopted to build a theory about the ecology of reflection for learning through experience. Through this process …
