Institutional Influence On Hrm Practices In Equitised State Owned Enterprises In Vietnam, Quy Ngoc Nguyen

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Through the lens of institutional theory, this thesis examines institutional influence on the adoption and non-adoption of human resource management (HRM) practices in Vietnamese equitised state owned enterprises (ESOEs). Qualitative research was used to gather empirical evidence. Six interviews with government officials and 43 interviews in seven large equitised state owned enterprises in Vietnam were conducted. Taking observational notes, collecting organizational documents, and attending organizational meetings and relevant social activities were additional forms of data collection. ESOEs were chosen across a range of industry types and in different stages of equitisation from state dominant to 100% private enterprise. Within each …

Technical Efficiency Of The Vietnamese Banking Sector: An Empirical Analysis Encompassing Pre- And Post-Wto Entry, Le Thanh Phuong Jan 2016

Technical Efficiency Of The Vietnamese Banking Sector: An Empirical Analysis Encompassing Pre- And Post-Wto Entry, Le Thanh Phuong

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The nexus between finance and economic growth has been theoretically and empirically examined in the literature. A well-functioning financial system is an essential factor that ensures the sustainable development of economies. Measurements of efficiency and productivity can be used to identify good/bad financial systems. In Vietnam, commercial banks dominate and contribute 90% of the total assets of the financial system (IMF, 2014). Thus, the efficiency and productivity of the banking sector is pivotal to the attainment of economic growth and development in Vietnam. In joining the WTO in 2007 Vietnam had to implement reform measures aimed at further liberalising and …

An Investigation Of The Measurement Of Inequality And The Causal Effects Of The Pro-Poor National Targeted Programs On Inequality In Vietnam, Van Phuc Phan Jan 2016

An Investigation Of The Measurement Of Inequality And The Causal Effects Of The Pro-Poor National Targeted Programs On Inequality In Vietnam, Van Phuc Phan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis analyses multidimensional inequality in Vietnam in the period 1993– 2008. The theoretical framework of this work is Sen’s (1985a) capability approach. The capability theory argues that wellbeing, the result of personal capabilities, must be situated as the central focus of analyses of inequality. Inequalities in different dimensions of wellbeing should be incorporated into a single index, rather than in separate indices, to paint a clear picture of inequality. However, there are significant deficiencies in the literature on multidimensional inequality based on conventional measurements (i.e. Maasoumi’s two-stage and the Atkinson–Kolm–Sen approaches). As a result, existing studies on inequality cannot …

Industrialization And Poverty Eradication In Vietnam, Hau Thi Bich Duong Jan 2016

Industrialization And Poverty Eradication In Vietnam, Hau Thi Bich Duong

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The alleviation of poverty in society is an imperative of governments and an influence on economies around the world. Economic growth has for many decades been believed to be a placatory instrument but reliance on economic development does not necessarily yield optimum results. Hence, poverty reduction has also been a fascination for researchers who seek to target specific questions thus contributing to the social welfare of defined populations. These cumulative efforts of researchers are intended to initiate change in government policies thus transforming the world into the way we would like it to be.

This thesis is dedicated to answering …

Sino-American Interactions In Southeast Asia 1991-2015: Implications For Vietnam, Thi Hai Yen Nguyen Jan 2015

Sino-American Interactions In Southeast Asia 1991-2015: Implications For Vietnam, Thi Hai Yen Nguyen

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis investigates the cooperation and competition between a global power (the United States) and a regional power (China) in Southeast Asia from 1991 to 2015. The research explores the interests of the US and China, focusing on how collective benefits can be maximised so as to meet the national interests of Vietnam. By means of an empirical analysis of American, Chinese and Vietnamese foreign policy through extensive interviews with ASEAN politicians and diplomats, this thesis argues that, contrary to some accounts, Vietnam is not forging closer ties to the US to counter-balance the rise of China. Rather, the thesis …

Board Diversity, Earnings Quality And Corporate Social Disclosure: Evidence From Vietnamese Listed Firms, Trang Cam Hoang Jan 2014

Board Diversity, Earnings Quality And Corporate Social Disclosure: Evidence From Vietnamese Listed Firms, Trang Cam Hoang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Vietnam is a newly emerging nation that is transitioning from a planned economy to a market oriented economy. There are very few previous investigations into the Vietnamese economy found in the literature. This thesis intends to be among the pioneers by examining, first, the effect of board diversity on earnings quality; second, the effect of board diversity on corporate social disclosure (CSD); third, the relationship between CSD and earnings quality of Vietnamese listed firms. It will also examine whether the relationship between CSD and earnings quality is moderated by state ownership and foreign ownership.

Board diversity is identified in two …

‘It Was Florence Nightingale By Torch’: Military Nursing Traditions And Australian Nurses In Vietnam, Janice Margaret Twomey Jan 2014

‘It Was Florence Nightingale By Torch’: Military Nursing Traditions And Australian Nurses In Vietnam, Janice Margaret Twomey

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the experiences of two groups of nurses who served in the Vietnam War, the members of Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps (RAANC) and the women who volunteered as members of the civilian aid surgical teams who served in Vietnam under the humanitarian aid clauses of the Southeast Asian Treaty Organisation (SEATO). The oral testimonies of 31 members of both RAANC and the civilian aid teams provided the evidence used for this thesis.

The thesis argues that both groups of women, irrespective of their mode of deployment worked within a tradition of Australian nursing: the military nursing tradition, …

Monetary Transmission Mechanism Analysis In A Small, Open Economy: The Case Of Vietnam, Ha Thanh Nguyen Jan 2014

Monetary Transmission Mechanism Analysis In A Small, Open Economy: The Case Of Vietnam, Ha Thanh Nguyen

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The transmission mechanism of monetary policy describes the dynamic stages in which a central bank’s monetary policies are transmitted to real output and prices. It plays a crucial, perhaps even central, role in the study of monetary economics. However, few studies have focussed on developing small, open economies, and even fewer have covered characteristics such as the aggregate demand components, the low independence of monetary policy, the weak developing financial markets and structural changes in the economy. Few quantitative empirical studies have been conducted on the monetary transmission mechanism in Vietnam, and they do not include a non-recursive structural vector …
