Career Crossroads: Motivations And Concerns Of Mid-Career Teachers In Nsw Department Of Education Primary Schools, Ruth Lusty Jan 2016

Career Crossroads: Motivations And Concerns Of Mid-Career Teachers In Nsw Department Of Education Primary Schools, Ruth Lusty

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This Australian study investigates the motivations and concerns of mid-career teachers in NSW Department of Education (NSW DoE)i primary schools. Although existing literature relating to notions of mid-career and worker motivation is extensive and cross-disciplinary, literature specifically related to teachers in mid-career has, until recently, been limited. The three areas of mid-career, teachers and the organisational context of the NSW DoE, underpin this research and contribute to developing conceptualisations of the professional lives of mid-career teachers. This study builds upon the broad themes identified in my recent Delphi study (Lusty 2013). As there is little literature specific to mid-career teachers …

Negotiating The Curriculum Landscape: A Genealogical Study Of The Introduction Of A Middle School Initiative, Sharon Holdsworth Jan 2016

Negotiating The Curriculum Landscape: A Genealogical Study Of The Introduction Of A Middle School Initiative, Sharon Holdsworth

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the development and introduction of a middle schooling model in a traditional, Catholic girls’ high school in Australia. Utilising a Foucauldian approach, it follows the initiative from its early emergence as a discourse amongst the school leadership to its eventual existence as a concrete object in the school context. Through the format of an analytical narrative, the thesis explores the role of leaders in the school who were key players in the rise of the idea as a change possibility, as well as the involvement of other leaders and teachers in the development of the Middle School. …

Leadership Of Australian Pows In The Second World War, Katie Lisa Meale Jan 2015

Leadership Of Australian Pows In The Second World War, Katie Lisa Meale

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is a study of one common aspect of the Australian POW experience across the Pacific and European theatres of the Second World War; leadership. The leadership of POWs is examined through a series of case studies based on three different types of leaders; positional (rank), professional (Medical Officers or chaplains) or emergent. Dependent on their leadership type, these men were responsible for a formal or informal group. Formal groups consisted of the POW population within a camp, compound, prisoner battalion or marching group. Informal groups were usually mates or acquaintances who found themselves in the same camp compound, …

Imagining And Shaping: Exploring Creativity In Leadership, Julie Maree Wilson Reynolds Jan 2015

Imagining And Shaping: Exploring Creativity In Leadership, Julie Maree Wilson Reynolds

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The aim of this research is to better understand the role of creativity in educational leadership. As school leaders are charged with the task of shaping learning communities it is important to understand the ways in which they approach this complex challenge. Toward that end, the researcher probed a number of questions: What elements of creativity are evident in the role of the principal? Do these elements impact on leadership decisions? How do social, political and technological changes impact school leadership? Do school leaders see themselves as creative? Are some principals more attuned to the creative aspects of their roles? …

An Investigation Into The Feasibility And Significance Of Identifying Potential Moral Leadership Capability In Adolescence, Rosemary Cathcart Jan 2015

An Investigation Into The Feasibility And Significance Of Identifying Potential Moral Leadership Capability In Adolescence, Rosemary Cathcart

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This research took as its starting point the view expressed by various writers that humanity urgently needs renewed positive moral leadership if current world problems are to be addressed, and that therefore there is a need to identify and nurture individuals with the potential to take such a leadership role. However, Renzulli (2002) has argued that at the present time, while we can recognise such individuals in maturity, we have no understanding of how they develop into that role, and are therefore unable to identify and nurture those young individuals who might have that potential.

How Does The Foundation Staff Of A New Catholic Coeducation Secondary School Experience Teaching Social And Emotional Learning Within School Structures And As A Regular Component Of An Integrated Curriculum?, Kerrie Hayes-Williams

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The building of new schools in Australia is not an uncommon occurrence, however, there is little research that guides education authorities on ‘how’ to address the challenges that staff experience as they endeavour to establish, develop and sustain the educational visions, so as not to revert to past practices. In a rapidly changing society, a model of education must equip young people with development of personal characteristics and attitudes to navigate the complexities and challenges of the world in which they live and work. A new school provides a unique opportunity to re-imagine a model of education that meets the …

The Relationship Between Principals’ Leadership Styles And Job Satisfaction As Perceived By Primary School Teachers Across Nsw Independent Schools, Katie K. Waters Jan 2013

The Relationship Between Principals’ Leadership Styles And Job Satisfaction As Perceived By Primary School Teachers Across Nsw Independent Schools, Katie K. Waters

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In recent times, political, economic and societal reforms have prompted fundamental shifts in educational policies and the manner in which schools are governed and led. Educational leadership and teacher performance across Australian government and independent schools have been under great scrutiny and national and state government reforms have been implemented to improve educational outcomes, teacher performance and the overall quality of leadership. With greater leadership autonomy, school principals will, inevitably, hold greater accountability and responsibility for the planning and implementation of educational goals, school improvement, professional development, resourcing levels, systematic evaluations and more (Scott, 1990). It is clear from the …

The Cultural Architecture Of Schools: A Study Of The Relationship Between School Design, The Learning Environment And Learning Communities In New Schools, Kathryn Bertram Jan 2012

The Cultural Architecture Of Schools: A Study Of The Relationship Between School Design, The Learning Environment And Learning Communities In New Schools, Kathryn Bertram

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A substantial body of literature describes the aesthetic and visual impact of architecture in contemporary schools, the processes by which architects apply personal and professional knowledge to the design of educational facilities and the ways in which educators use buildings to deliver curriculum. Despite the growing body of literature, few empirical studies have researched the impact school building design has had upon the creation of effective learning communities within schools.

This study sought to address this gap in the school design research by investigating the relationship between school design, the learning environment and learning communities in new schools. The study …

Management Skills For Professionals - Are They Required? A Case Study On The Needs Of Engineering, Peter Childs Jan 2012

Management Skills For Professionals - Are They Required? A Case Study On The Needs Of Engineering, Peter Childs

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

For more than thirty years the world’s economies have become increasingly oriented towards a more diverse set of objectives, including a focus on sustainability, stakeholder management and the effective motivation of staff for competitive advantage.

The need for engineers to be educated in business and management skills has been addressed to some extent, by the development of the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Engineering Management (MEM) and similar courses. These have been offered as supplementary qualifications to engineers holding undergraduate degrees. However, the need to develop undergraduate engineering courses that integrate such aspects as business strategy, entrepreneurship, leadership, …
