Antecedents Of Clinical Leadership And Pre-Registration Nursing Education, Angela M. Brown Jan 2016

Antecedents Of Clinical Leadership And Pre-Registration Nursing Education, Angela M. Brown

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Leadership has become a significant issue worldwide in the latter half of the twentieth century. More specifically there is an abundance of literature on leadership and the registered nursing workforce. In recent years there has been a growth in leadership development frameworks specifically for registered nurses. This is an area of my experience and expertise with over fifteen years’ experience of facilitating leadership development with clinicians. More recently there is a growing support for the inclusion of clinical leadership preparation in pre-registration nursing programmes, as an academic with a responsibility to influence how nurses are prepared for the profession I …

Imagining And Shaping: Exploring Creativity In Leadership, Julie Maree Wilson Reynolds Jan 2015

Imagining And Shaping: Exploring Creativity In Leadership, Julie Maree Wilson Reynolds

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The aim of this research is to better understand the role of creativity in educational leadership. As school leaders are charged with the task of shaping learning communities it is important to understand the ways in which they approach this complex challenge. Toward that end, the researcher probed a number of questions: What elements of creativity are evident in the role of the principal? Do these elements impact on leadership decisions? How do social, political and technological changes impact school leadership? Do school leaders see themselves as creative? Are some principals more attuned to the creative aspects of their roles? …

Reconciling Educationally Displaced Young People And Education, Nicoli Humphry Jan 2014

Reconciling Educationally Displaced Young People And Education, Nicoli Humphry

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In Australia there are a significant proportion of young people existing in debilitating lives, who, for a range of reasons, are no longer attending school. In this thesis I ask, what work is required of schools to reconcile these young people with education following their, often, incapacitating engagements with educational and social disadvantage and exclusion.

This thesis comes from an eighteen month ethnographic study conducted across the four school sites of one Australian organisation, Youth Off The Streets (YOTS). Fieldwork involved the use of two ethnographic techniques: in-depth interviews with 20 young people and 18 staff, and observations of over …

An Investigation Of The Educational Applications Of Interactive Television, Jann Roberts Jan 2013

An Investigation Of The Educational Applications Of Interactive Television, Jann Roberts

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The research reported here is an investigation into the educational applications of interactive television (ITV). It was prompted by the need to address the problem of lack of engagement of learners in more “traditional” pen and paper learning environments. The report comprises a multiple case study, consisting of 2 cases of ITV production units, and one case of an ITV research institute. Socio-‐constructivist theories of learning, coupled with the theory of technological determinism, have provided the theoretical framework. The methodology is predominantly qualitative. Data collection methods include reading appropriate literature, observing ITV production units, and carrying out interviews. Eight participants …

Examining The Ways That Primary Teachers (K-2) Use Interactive Whiteboards In Connection With Their Literacy-Based Pedagogical Practices, Kay Hannelore Prcevich Jan 2013

Examining The Ways That Primary Teachers (K-2) Use Interactive Whiteboards In Connection With Their Literacy-Based Pedagogical Practices, Kay Hannelore Prcevich

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In recent times there has been a significant increase in the use of interactive whiteboard (IWB) technology in NSW school classrooms. The upsurge of IWB technology has resulted in the expectation of major changes in educational settings, however, the literature indicates a different reality, suggesting that IWBs have not been used to their potential (Fitzallen, 2005; Kent, 2006; Kervin & Jones, 2009) with some papers suggesting the technology has been somewhat mislabelled (Burden, 2002; Lee & Boyle, 2003).

The purpose of this inquiry was to explore the ways that IWB technology has been implemented in NSW primary schools within literacy-based …

Indirect Benefits Of Women’S Education: Evidence From Bangladesh, Selina Akhter Jan 2012

Indirect Benefits Of Women’S Education: Evidence From Bangladesh, Selina Akhter

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Education, although contributes significantly to economic growth through human resource development, women education deserves attention for generating substantial benefits for the society by educating themselves as well as rearing healthy and better educated children as a potential workforce. However, the benefits of women’s education are commonly measured by increased productivity through enhanced labour market participation. In many developing countries, in fact, a non-linear relationship between women education and labour market participation is observed very often. Thus, studies do not always support the simple intuitive argument that increasing expenditure on women's education enhances economic development in such countries. This contradictory effect …

The Experiences Of Students With Mild To Moderate Intellectual Disabilities As They Transition From Primary To Secondary School, Francis Pitt Jan 2012

The Experiences Of Students With Mild To Moderate Intellectual Disabilities As They Transition From Primary To Secondary School, Francis Pitt

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study explored the experiences of ten students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities as they transitioned from primary to secondary school. The aim of the research was to investigate and share the experiences of students, using a multiple case study approach involving observations, interviews and formal and informal interactions. Parents, teachers and school principals from both the primary and secondary schools involved were also interviewed as part of this study.

The research was based on an understanding of child development as a joint function of environmental influences, including parents, teachers and neighbours, and the characteristics of the child. Bronfenbrenner’s …

Missions, Education And Literature In Oceania: With Emphasis On Papua New Guinea, Shayne Kearney Jan 2011

Missions, Education And Literature In Oceania: With Emphasis On Papua New Guinea, Shayne Kearney

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The London Missionary Society’s [LMS] first mission endeavour was in the South Seas at Tahiti in 1797. The mostly Calvinist missionaries unquestionably transformed the lives of the Pacific Islanders forever. Although the missionaries primary goal was Christian conversion, their influence far exceeded the religious realm. They became, perhaps unwittingly, agents of colonialism by introducing their own social mores and morality; enforced Western codes of law, banned traditional practices and captivated the Islanders with Western technologies. Their success was not instant; it took years of dedication and sheer doggedness to achieve their goal, but success when it came, was staggering.

Teaching …
