Factors Affecting Nursing Staff Use Of Nursing Information Systems In Residential Aged Care Homes, Malatsi Galani Jan 2015

Factors Affecting Nursing Staff Use Of Nursing Information Systems In Residential Aged Care Homes, Malatsi Galani

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The use of nursing information systems (NIS) has the potential to improve the delivery of nursing care. In particular, these systems facilitate accurate, efficient and high quality documentation.

Further, the other benefits of using NIS are to reduce staff time on documentation, facilitate organisational management and improve communication. Although NIS have been introduced throughout the healthcare sector in recent years, the use of these systems is still limited in residential aged care homes (RACHs). To date, there is limited or no research in Australia that has examined the factors that can facilitate or hinder exploitation of the potential of NIS …

Self-Management Of Cognitive Load In Accounting Within A Zimbabwean University Context, Seedwell Tanaka Muyako Sithole Jan 2015

Self-Management Of Cognitive Load In Accounting Within A Zimbabwean University Context, Seedwell Tanaka Muyako Sithole

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Students frequently struggle with poor instructional design. A common example of poor design is where students are required to split their attention between several sources of information found in textbooks and other documents. Learners need to mentally integrate two or more distinct items of information, and this places unnecessary demands on cognitive load. Cognitive load theory assumes that the task of mental integration increases the load on already limited working memory, and it does so to such an extent that learning may be severely impeded. This thesis investigates how students could deal with cognitive overload when learning introductory accounting using …

Comparing Worked Examples And Problem-Solving Methods In Teaching Mathematics To Esl Students At Tertiary Level, Ali Algarni Jan 2013

Comparing Worked Examples And Problem-Solving Methods In Teaching Mathematics To Esl Students At Tertiary Level, Ali Algarni

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study explores two challenges faced by tertiary ESL students learning mathematics, the complexity of learning the mathematics discipline together with the challenge of learning in a second language. It draws together the theoretical knowledge as to how bi-lingual students learn, using strategies such as codeswitching, borrowing, multimodal approach, an understanding of the problems experienced by students learning mathematics with the Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) providing a basis for understanding the function of working memory.

Drawing on the theories regarding cognitive load, the use of different approaches to teaching to reduce the cognitive load of students learning tertiary mathematics in …

Self-Management Of Cognitive Load When Evidence Of Split-Attention Is Present, Kylie Roodenrys Jan 2012

Self-Management Of Cognitive Load When Evidence Of Split-Attention Is Present, Kylie Roodenrys

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Students are constantly exposed to inefficient learning environments where materials are designed with a lack of consideration about the architecture of human memory. Split attention learning environments are a common cause of cognitive overload for students and the focus for this thesis was to investigate the effect on learning if students were instructed to manage split attention.

Three experiments investigated how students could manage their own cognitive load when there was evidence of split attention in learning materials. In all three experiments, participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions:

1. Conventional split attention formatted instructional materials (Group 1: …

Optimising Layered Integrated Instructional Design Using Cognitive Load Theory, Abdallah Abdalaziz Al Asaraj Jan 2012

Optimising Layered Integrated Instructional Design Using Cognitive Load Theory, Abdallah Abdalaziz Al Asaraj

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study seeks to investigate how cognitive load influences knowledge construction and the role of web-based ‘layered, integrated instructional design’ techniques, which can facilitate the construction and automation of schemas by learners. This research study will focus on how utilising the principles of Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) affects the design of web-based integrated instructional materials, with a view to optimising the learning process. CLT is based on the assumption that a learner receives information through the senses and this information is passed to working memory, which has a limited capacity; optimising how a learner processes information in working memory can …

Effect Of Split Attention On Grammar Learning Among Children With Specific Language Impairment, Kerry May Giumelli Jan 2012

Effect Of Split Attention On Grammar Learning Among Children With Specific Language Impairment, Kerry May Giumelli

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Children with specific language impairment are a group of children who experience severe difficulty learning and using language, despite the absence of any intellectual, hearing, vision or emotional difficulties (Beverly & Williams, 2004). Compared to children with normally developing language, children with specific language impairment have been shown to experience difficulty learning grammar, with many also believed to experience working memory deficits (Archibald & Gathercole, 2006; Gathercole & Baddeley, 1990; Montgomery, 2004). Cognitive load theory (CLT – Sweller, 2010a) is based on the assumption that human cognitive architecture plays a major part in learning, in particular when instructional design takes …
