The Effect Of Altered Body Temperature On Exercise In The Heat: Thermoregulatory And Metabolic Function, John Duncan Booth Jan 2000

The Effect Of Altered Body Temperature On Exercise In The Heat: Thermoregulatory And Metabolic Function, John Duncan Booth

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

There is a paucity of information concerning the effect of a pre-manipulation of body temperature on exercise in a hot environment. Hence, the thermal impact of water immersion pre-treatment on physical endurance and physiological function during exercise in the heat (35°C, RH 50%) was investigated

The efficacy of a novel method of whole-body pre-cooling, involving up to 60 min of water immersion at 29-24°C, for increasing exercise endurance in the heat was investigated. Compared to a neutral condition, pre-cooling increased the distance run (300 m ) by five male and three female subjects during a 30-min time trial. Moreover, pre-cooling …

Role Of Membranes In Determining The Molecular Activity Of The Sodium Pump, Ben Jing Wu Jan 2000

Role Of Membranes In Determining The Molecular Activity Of The Sodium Pump, Ben Jing Wu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Metabolic rates of animals vary considerably. Major variations in standard or basal metabolic rate occur between vertebrate groups, as a result of changes in body size and during development. Recently, studies of membrane linked energy consuming processes have shown that membrane lipid composition may be correlated with the activity of these processes and therefore metabolism. Generally, high metabolic rate being associated with increased polyunsaturation of membranes. This implies that membranes may play a role in determining the rate or pace of metabolism.

In this thesis, the role of the membrane in determining the molecular activity of sodium pump (Na+ …

Electrochemical Detection Of Microorganisms Using Conducting Polymers, Andrew Ian Minett Jan 2000

Electrochemical Detection Of Microorganisms Using Conducting Polymers, Andrew Ian Minett

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The rapid detection of microorganisms in the food, pharmaceutical, clinical medicine, environmental and agricultural industries is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, the best current technology has been able to offer is detection times of several days for quantitative results. The development of conducting polymer films has led to an increase in research activity involving the use of these materials for the design and application of sensors. Their ability to undergo electrochemical switching between oxidised and reduced states, which is correlated with the movement of anions and cations, has seen conducting polymers successfully used to produce electrochemical responses for particular species …

Novel Synthetic And Characterisation Strategies Towards A-Fulleryl Amino Acids, Glenn A. Burley Jan 2000

Novel Synthetic And Characterisation Strategies Towards A-Fulleryl Amino Acids, Glenn A. Burley

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Chapter 1 of this thesis describes the structure and reactivity of the most common member of the new family of carbon allotropes, [60]fullerene. Although originally thought to be an unreactive "superaromatic" molecule, [60]fullerene is susceptible to a diverse number of reactions. [60]Fullerene and many [60]fulleffene derivatives, such as fulleryl amino acids also exhibit a wide range of biological activities.

One of the most useful reactions known in fullerene chemistry is the Bingel cyclopropanation. This facile reaction enables access to a wide range of cyclopropanated fullerene derivatives (or methanofullerenes) in acceptable yields and under mild conditions. To date, such cyclopropanation reactions …

An Analysis Of Gcc Demand For Tourism Services With Special Reference To Australian Tourist Resorts, Abdulla Alhemoud

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Tourism is an increasingly important area of Service trade. Every foreign visitor who spends money in a tourist resort/destination contributes to an improvement in the balance of current account of the country to which this resort belongs. With the value of the Australian dollar declining, and given the vast natural resources and beauty offered by Australia, tourism services may well become a key Australian export factor.

The literature on marketing of tourism is still in an infant stage. This is because tourism, is a composite service offered by nationals to foreigners. The tourist is a very different customer to the …

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The effect of varying welding conditions on multipass weld metal has been investigated in all-weld test plates produced by flux cored arc (FCA) welding. The principal welding conditions varied for the test samples in the current research program were heat input (between approximately 1 and 2.5 kJ/mm), welding technique (stringer or weave beads), shielding gas, welding position (flat or vertical) and consumable type.

Mechanical testing of weld metal included tensile testing and Charpy-vee-notch impact tests over a range of temperatures from -60 °C to 40 °C. The tensile testing results showed that yield and tensile strength generally decreased with increasing …

The Status Of Implicit And Explicit Memory Research: Is A Comprehensive Theory Of Performance Achievable?, Hanna H. Thomas Jan 2000

The Status Of Implicit And Explicit Memory Research: Is A Comprehensive Theory Of Performance Achievable?, Hanna H. Thomas

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The status of Implicit and Explicit memory research was examined from a predominantly cognitive perspective. Across ten experiments, predictions from three extant models were tested: Roediger and colleagues' Transfer Appropriate Processing (TAP) framework, Graf and Mandler's Dual Processing (DP) framework and Tulving's Serial, Parallel, Independent (SPI) model. The inclusion of Jacoby and colleagues' Process Dissociation Procedure supplemented analyses for Experiments 7 to 10. At study, participants performed one of several 'depth-of-processing' tasks. For tests employing conceptual cues, an advantage for 'deeper' encoding conditions was consistently observed, regardless of test instructions (implicit or explicit). Conversely, for tests employing perceptual cues, test …

Partially Parametric Testing, Anthony Carolan Jan 2000

Partially Parametric Testing, Anthony Carolan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Parametric tests strictly speaking rely on quite rigid distributional assumptions. Nonparametric tests have wider applicability but in general are not as powerful. The tests we consider in this thesis will, in a sense, fall between the standard parametric and nonparametric tests and so might be termed partially parametric. Data are assumed to come from a broad family of distributions which includes the normal distribution. Asymptotically optimal tests using this family are derived for the one sample and multiple sample location problems and are shown, by way of simulation, to be more powerful than standard tests in a variety of situations. …

Some Exact Solutions In Finite Elasticity And Their Applications, Anna Maria Milan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Elastic deformations beyond the range of the classical infinitesimal theory of elasticity are governed by highly non-linear partial differential equations. Usually conventional methods of solution are inapplicable and accordingly only a few exact solutions are known. In this thesis, for some special classes of deformations and for some special materials, we obtain new exact solutions which we apply to certain stress boundary value problems.

perfectly elastic rubber-like materials undergoing large elastic deformations, the non-symmetrical inflation and eversion of circular cylindrical rubber tubes is examined for a family of strain-energy functions, which includes the neo-Hookean and Varga materials as special cases. …

The Development Of A Formal Network Planning Process For The Military Tactical Environment, Tracey Lea Peterson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The nature of defence is changing such that significant advantage will be achieved through the creative, timely and decisive use of information. The ability to access, use, manipulate and protect information will be fundamental to future military operations. To achieve this "information edge", a complex information network known as the C4I system will be developed and implemented. Existing tactical networks, which are limited in their capability and features will need to be redefined and redeveloped to support the future C4I system. This necessitates a new approach to tactical network planning given the need for better coordination throughout the defence organisation …

Electrochemically Polymerised Acrylics As Adhesion Promoting Layers At A Metal/Polymer Interface, Sandra Leigh Cram Jan 2000

Electrochemically Polymerised Acrylics As Adhesion Promoting Layers At A Metal/Polymer Interface, Sandra Leigh Cram

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Electrochemical polymerisation (ECP) of non conducting polymers to form thin, passive films on electrodes has received attention in recent years as a potential adhesion promotion technique. Work on carbon electrodes with applications in the carbon fibre composite industry have shown that it is possible to enhance adhesion of carbon fibres to the composite matrix through ECP pretreatments. ECP to produce passive coatings on metals has also been studied, however much of this work is concerned with production of corrosion inhibiting films, rather than adhesion promoting layers. ECP methods are a promising alternative to the chromate pretreatments and primers presently used …

An Adaptation Of The 'Epic Of Gilgamesh' For The Screen, Loretta Judd Jan 2000

An Adaptation Of The 'Epic Of Gilgamesh' For The Screen, Loretta Judd

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In discussing my adaptation of the Ancient Sumerian Epic ofGilgamesh I am referring to a text which does not exist, a film that has not been made. What does exist is a screenplay with the working title The Game ofUruk where the visual style and features of an envisaged film are suggested through the medium of words and accompanying visual material. Art Historian Erwin Panofsky writing on film has said that 'the screenplay has no aesthetic existence independent of its performance and ... its characters have no aesthetic existence outside the actors' (1934) While this may be debatable, discussion of …

The Influence Of High Fat Diet On Hypothalamic Neural Activity: An Examination Of C-Fos, A-Msh And Npy Immunoreactivity And Leptin Receptor M-Rna Statement In Hypothalamus, Yonglin Zhang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the influence of a high-fat diet on hypothalamic neural activity. The hypothalamus plays an essential role in regulating body weight. Peripheral tissues, particularly fatty tissue, send signals such as leptin to the hypothalamus to activate a neural network in the brain that regulates food intake and energy balance. This neural network is coded with specific neurotransmitters and receptors. Hypothalamic Neuropeptide-Y and alpha-MSH (alpha-Melancortin stimulate hormone) systems are critically involved in this regulation of body weight.
