Development Of Conducting Polymer Membrane Structures For Protein And Gas Separation, Dezhi Zhou Jan 1997

Development Of Conducting Polymer Membrane Structures For Protein And Gas Separation, Dezhi Zhou

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The development of new materials has greatly expanded the application of membrane separation technologies. Conducting electroactive polymers, such as polypyrrole, represent a new class of electrodynamic membranes with potential application in a number of areas.

A range of new electromembranes have been successfully synthesised and characterised in this work. A new electromembrane transport systems for protein separation and recovery has been devised.

Platinised electromembranes have been successfully fabricated with the use of conventional commercial membranes such as polyvinylidine fluoride (PVDF) or polysulfone membranes as substrates. Polypyrrole composite membranes as well as free-standing films have been electrochemically synthesised with a series …

The Vegetation Ecology Of A Coastal, Freshwater Wetland, Nicholas H. De Jong Jan 1997

The Vegetation Ecology Of A Coastal, Freshwater Wetland, Nicholas H. De Jong

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

There is little known about the ecology of the freshwater wetlands on the south coast of NSW. Yet wetlands in the area continue to be lost, while others face increasing levels of human induced disturbance. At the same time there is an increasing local demand for information on wetland restoration and creation. Coomonderry Swamp (34°48' S, 150°44' E) is, at 670 ha, the largest freshwater, coastal wetland in southern NSW, Australia. Partial National Park protection of the wetland followed recognition of its ecological significance in various inventories, although comprehensive surveys of the flora and fauna had yet to be carried …

Alkaloid-Based Syntheses Of Potential New Glycosidase Inhibitors, Gregory James Tarrant Jan 1997

Alkaloid-Based Syntheses Of Potential New Glycosidase Inhibitors, Gregory James Tarrant

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The general aim of this work was to develop novel synthetic approaches to the 1- hydroxytropane and 1-hydroxynortropane class of compounds from the structurally advanced alkaloids, scopolamine 99 and castanospermine 7, which are isolated from Australian plants.

This project consists of two parts. The first part (Chapter 2) deals with the preparation of 3α-hydroxyphysoperuvine 103 from scopolamine. This was achieved in nine steps with an overall yield of 16%. The main steps in this synthesis included the deoxygenation of scopolamine and the Meisenheimer rearrangement of a tropane N-oxide. The deoxygenation of scopolamine was achieved using zinc-copper couple in …

Application Of Artificial Neural Networks To Water Treatment Plant Operation, Mir Abdolmehdi Mirsepassi Jan 1997

Application Of Artificial Neural Networks To Water Treatment Plant Operation, Mir Abdolmehdi Mirsepassi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The water industry is facing increased pressure to produce higher quality treated water at a lower cost. The operation of water treatment plants is considerably different from most manufacturing industrial operations because raw water sources are often subject to natural perturbations. The efficiency of an existing treatment plant closely relates to the operating conditions of the plant, particularly to that of coagulant types and dosages. In this study, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model has been applied to water treatment plant data in order to predict the coagulant dosage. The ANNs provide an alternative means of computation inspired by the …

A Study Of In-Plant De-Nox And De-Sox In The Iron Ore Sintering Process, Chin-Lu Mo Jan 1997

A Study Of In-Plant De-Nox And De-Sox In The Iron Ore Sintering Process, Chin-Lu Mo

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The NOx and SOx emissions from iron ore sintering processes dominate the air pollutants emitted by an integrated steel works. Waste gases treatment technologies are applied in the traditional de-NOx, de-SOx processes. This study takes a different approach by investigating methods of depressing the NOx and SOx formation in the iron ore sintering stage rather than to treat the waste gases.

Our studies concluded that urea was a potential additive for in-system de-SOx. A 0.03 wt% of urea charging mass can lead to 85% SOx depression efficiency. A study of passing S02 through heated urea has shown that reaction …

Industrial Relations In The Australian Engineering Industry, 1920-1945: The Amalgamated Engineering Union And Craft Unionism, Kouichi Inaba Jan 1997

Industrial Relations In The Australian Engineering Industry, 1920-1945: The Amalgamated Engineering Union And Craft Unionism, Kouichi Inaba

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines industrial relations in the Australian engineering industry between 1920 and 1945, with a focus on the legal framework, production methods and union activities. During this period, the Australian engineering industry developed from the 'jobbing' to the manufacturing stage. Therefore, the study assesses the extent to which the traditional industrial order, based on the apprentices-tradesmen system, was affected by this transformation. The investigation focuses on the industrial struggle between capital and labour at the point of production, especially the logic of craft unionism.

In the 1920s, the industry remained at the 'jobbing' stage and production was heavily dependent …

Grain Growth And Continuous Cooling Transformation Behaviour Of Austenite In Ti-Nb-Mn-Mo Microalloyed Steels, Priyadarshan Manohar Jan 1997

Grain Growth And Continuous Cooling Transformation Behaviour Of Austenite In Ti-Nb-Mn-Mo Microalloyed Steels, Priyadarshan Manohar

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Experiments were carried out to study the grain growth during reheating and phase transformation behaviour during continuous cooling of austenite in five microalloyed steels. Two of these steels were supplied in as-cast slab as well as in controlled rolled plate conditions. These steels contained similar levels of C (~ 0.07%), Ti (~ 0.013%) and Mo (~ 0.2%) but had different levels of Mn (1.1 to 1.7 %) and Nb (0.03% to 0.06%) contents. The principal aim of this work was to simulate as closely as possible the controlled rolling schedule used in industry for the production of plates in laboratory. …

Body Parts Of One's Own: A Moral Argument For The Ownership Of Human Body Parts, Nicole Gerrand Jan 1997

Body Parts Of One's Own: A Moral Argument For The Ownership Of Human Body Parts, Nicole Gerrand

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The possibility of transplanting human body parts from one person to another, and the increasing and varied use for such parts in medical experimentation, means that human body parts can now reasonably be described as medical resources. Like many medical resources, body parts suitable for transplantation or experimentation are in short supply. Unlike other medical resources, however, such parts are significant for another reason: namely, because they had previously been functional parts of a person's body. Although the relevant policies require a person's consent before her body parts are used in either these ways, in practice such consent is not …

A Spectroscopic Study Of Acceptors In Germanium, Andrew Warner Jan 1997

A Spectroscopic Study Of Acceptors In Germanium, Andrew Warner

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Zeeman and piezo-Zeeman spectroscopy have been used to study the single acceptors gallium and singly ionised zinc in germanium. While the Zeeman spectra of group III acceptors have been extensively studied by others the use, here, of high magnetic fields and high resolution have clarified the Zeeman behaviour of these, the simplest of acceptors, giving unambiguous and precise quantitative results about the ground state and the two excited states of the G and D spectral lines. These results are used to test the predictions of two theoretical treatments. The agreement between both theoretical treatments and experiment for the excited state …

Two Theories Of International Justice And The Third World Debt Crisis, Kevin Joseph D'Arcy Jan 1997

Two Theories Of International Justice And The Third World Debt Crisis, Kevin Joseph D'Arcy

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this thesis I assess Susan George's proposed solution to the Third World debt crisis in the light of two contemporary and competing theories of justice which have international application. The two theories against which George's proposal is assessed are Onora O'Neill's Kantian-inspired theory of justice and R.M. Hare's preference utilitarianism. These theories are firstly located amongst various ethical traditions that have been applied to international relations and are selected as significant contenders in their relevance to an issue such as the Third World debt crisis. After outlining George's account of the importance and origins of the Third World debt …

The Role Of Commercialisation In Restructuring The New South Wales Public Sector And The Implication For Industrial Relations, Liwayway Johnson Jan 1997

The Role Of Commercialisation In Restructuring The New South Wales Public Sector And The Implication For Industrial Relations, Liwayway Johnson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Commercialisation has been an integral part of microeconomic reform in the New South Wales Public Sector since 1980. The TAPE sector, as part of the NSW public sector is no exception. TAPE was forced to accommodate the changes and challenges imposed by the government in order to increase efficiency and competitiveness in the open training market. There are questions about the ability of the TAPE system to adapt to these demands. Although there have been some changes within the current industrial relations system, the rate of change has not been fast enough to keep pace with changed objectives. Staff are …

On The Effect Of The Ethernet Protocol In Lan Traffic Modelling, I. Gusti Paramajaya Jan 1997

On The Effect Of The Ethernet Protocol In Lan Traffic Modelling, I. Gusti Paramajaya

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

There are two groups of traffic models that usually used in telecommunication network design, planning and performance evaluation. They are aggregate and individual models. In case of individual models, measurement-based studies are the most common approach used to obtain an accurate traffic model. The common assumption used in this approach is that the data link layer protocol (i.e., layer 2 of OSI Reference Model) does not significantly affect traffic characteristics of its higher layer where the traffic characteristics are of interest. In other words, this hypothesis assumes that traffic characteristics at the input of the data link protocol is statistically …

Development Of A Copper Containing 690 Mpa Yield Strength Quenched And Tempered Steel, James Alfred Chevis Jan 1997

Development Of A Copper Containing 690 Mpa Yield Strength Quenched And Tempered Steel, James Alfred Chevis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Demands placed on modern steels mean that higher strengths are being sought while alloy contents, particularly carbon, are decreased. These two conflicting requirements have forced steel designers to consider micro-alloying, heat treatment and precipitation strengthening to meet market demands.

This study concentrated on the use of precipitation hardening by copper to maintain the strength of reduced carbon, quenched and tempered steels. Many studies have concentrated on copper proportions above 1% in as rolled steels. It was the intent of this study to examine the effect of copper levels between 0 and 1% in the development of a low carbon, 690 …

Effects Of Adhering Layer On Tool Wear Progression In Machining Of Free-Cutting Stainless Steels, Dong Zhang Jan 1997

Effects Of Adhering Layer On Tool Wear Progression In Machining Of Free-Cutting Stainless Steels, Dong Zhang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Austenitic stainless steels are generally regarded as more difficult to machine than carbon or low alloy steels, because they are strongly workhardened. They bond very strongly to the tool during cutting, and this bonding is more obvious than when cutting other steels because the chips more often remain stuck to the tool after cutting. And when the chip is broken away it also remove other fragments. In this thesis, the machinability of the Ca-S free-cutting stainless steel and its relation with compound inclusions are studied. The tool wear mechanisms and tool wear progression patterns are identified. The cutting tool temperature …

Tool Wear Monitoring Of Cnc Oblique Turning Operations Using Sensor Fusion Backpropagation Neural Network, Erick Agus Santoso Jan 1997

Tool Wear Monitoring Of Cnc Oblique Turning Operations Using Sensor Fusion Backpropagation Neural Network, Erick Agus Santoso

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In-process tool wear monitoring has become an important aspect of modem automated manufacturing system. One of the important area of research in the tool wear monitoring system is the application of artificial intelligent techniques for sensor fusion strategy and rational decision making for tool and process conditions. Considerable work has been attempted by many previous authors to develop this technique. However many of these monitoring systems did not adequately give the desired information regarding to the cutting process condition, due to insufficient sensor information and the complex nature of the cutting process itself In this research, a multisensor or sensor …

Respite Care For People With A Terminal Illness: What Do Carers Want?, Ellen Nightingale Jan 1997

Respite Care For People With A Terminal Illness: What Do Carers Want?, Ellen Nightingale

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In Australia, during the past 15 to 20 years hospice palliative care services have attempted to meet the needs of people who are dying and their families. Much of the focus of care has concentrated on giving people the opportunity to be cared for at home for as long as possible, and to die at home if this is the wish of the patient and family. This descriptive study is concerned with the needs of people who may require respite care when they are caring for a person with a terminal illness at home. The purpose is to investigate what …

The Steady-State Microwave Heating Of Slabs, Bin Liu Jan 1997

The Steady-State Microwave Heating Of Slabs, Bin Liu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The steady-state microwave heating of finite one and two dimensional slabs is examined. The temperature dependency of the electrical conductivity and the thermal absorptivity is assumed to be governed by the Arrhenius law, while both the electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability are assumed constant. The governing equations are the steady-state versions of the forced heat equation and Maxwell's equations while the boundary conditions take into account both convective and radiative heat loss. Approximate analytical solutions, valid for small thermal absorptivity, are found for the steady-state temperature and the electric-field amplitude using the Galerkin method. As the Arrhenius law is not …

Time To Ponding In One & Two Dimensional Infiltration Systems, Janine M. Stewart Jan 1997

Time To Ponding In One & Two Dimensional Infiltration Systems, Janine M. Stewart

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Infiltration is the process whereby water enters soil through the surface. This can be a naturally occurring process, such as in rainfall, or can be artificially induced in engineering or agricultural applications. In most cases, fluid is infiltrated into soil that is unsaturated. As water infiltrates drier unsaturated soil, the water molecules fill the smallest soil pores where they are bound tighdy by capillary forces. In the transition to saturated soil, the capillary forces become less dominant and free water appears. Surface ponding is characterised by the appearance of this free water pooHng on the surface of the soil and …

Acculturation In Action: Food Habits Of Vietnamese Adolescents, Dian Tranter Jan 1997

Acculturation In Action: Food Habits Of Vietnamese Adolescents, Dian Tranter

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the background to the Food and Families study, and interprets the findings of the study within a sociocultural framework. As a result, evidence is presented that acculturation itself is not necessarily a negative influence nor creates a poor health outcome. The appropriateness of some widely accepted health promotion conventions, especially when applied to nutrition in a cross-cultural context, is also challenged and the validity of some of the evidence on which this and similar studies have been based is questioned. Findings of this analysis have implications for health promotion practice.

Using Cost Of Poor Quality To Identify Areas For Quality Improvements, Bjøorn H. Eriksson Jan 1997

Using Cost Of Poor Quality To Identify Areas For Quality Improvements, Bjøorn H. Eriksson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is concerned with the use of the cost of poor quality to identify areas for quality improvement, and to measure the results of the improvements. These improvements will show off in increased profit and increased customer satisfaction. A practically implementable method is developed for estimating and minimising quality costs in the manufacturing sector, and is demonstrated by 2 case studies. This method is based on the traditional Prevention-Appraisal- Failure (PAF) model. Three major modifications are made. The author argues that Prevention cost should not be included, due to the time lag before an increase in this cost pays …

Postnatal Depression: Prevalence, Prediction And Preventive Intervention Randomised Trial, Georgina E. Stamp Jan 1997

Postnatal Depression: Prevalence, Prediction And Preventive Intervention Randomised Trial, Georgina E. Stamp

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Depression after childbirth represents a largely under-reported area of maternal morbidity and a major public health issues in Australia (Health Department of Victoria 1990) and world wide (Gitlin & Pasnau 1989). Prior to the following studies, there was no published data on the prevalence of postnatal depression using a South Australian population. This identified gap, and the magnitude of the problem, resulted in the design and conduct of the studies that make up this thesis. The work has resulted in three publications in refereed journals (Stamp & Crowther 1994a, Stamp et al 1995, Stamp et al 1996).

In a preliminary …

The Impact Of An Extended Stay Outdoor Education School Program Upon Adolescent Participants, Tonia L. Gray Dr Jan 1997

The Impact Of An Extended Stay Outdoor Education School Program Upon Adolescent Participants, Tonia L. Gray Dr

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Although recently outdoor education has become an important component of the school curricula in Australia, extended programs in residential settings are still comparatively rare. Where such programs have been in existence, their raison d'etre is underpinned by anecdotal evidence rather than systematic evaluation or empirically established statements of effectiveness (Gray, Patterson and Linke, 1993a). This research is a longitudinal study examining the impact of an Extended Stay Outdoor Education School Program (ESOESP) upon adolescent participants. Primarily the study analyses program impact, both immediate and residual, upon the perceived changes in identified variables of participants. Data was gathered and analysed using …

The Islamic Peninsula stratovolcano was active between 8 and 6.5 M a and produced magmas with between 43.5 and 58.0% Si02. All rock types have common mineralogical and textural characteristics. …

Contributions To Authentication Logics And Analysis Of Authentication Protocols, Anish Mathuria Jan 1997

Contributions To Authentication Logics And Analysis Of Authentication Protocols, Anish Mathuria

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

An authentication protocol essentially provides a mechanism for verifying the identities of nodes in an insecure network, and for the safe distribution of secrets. The subject of authentication protocols is enormously subtle. It is surprisingly easy to design incorrect protocols. A typical authentication protocol consists of an exchange of just a few messages, may appear intuitively correct, and still not work as intended. It is common to find examples of published protocols in the literature which have subsequently been found to contain flaws. As a result, methods for verifying the correctness of protocols have proliferated. A pioneering work in this …

Musical Analysis Of Works For Performers And Electronics: An Alternative Approach, David Robert Boyle Jan 1997

Musical Analysis Of Works For Performers And Electronics: An Alternative Approach, David Robert Boyle

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Even a cursory reading of the analytical literature reveals a general lack of analysis of music for performers and electronics. This thesis examines the reasons for this and presents a method that helps alleviate the problem. It is thus in two parts, a critique and a method.

Information Technology Strategic Planning: A Case Study, Richard John Kingsford Jan 1997

Information Technology Strategic Planning: A Case Study, Richard John Kingsford

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is a detailed study of the first attempt by a certain public sector organisation (here referred to as "the Organisation") to follow a formal information technology (IT) strategic planning process and develop its own Information Technology Strategic Plan (ITSP). IT strategic planning is taken to include planning for information systems, information architecture, IT resources, IT infrastructure and telecommunications. The main aim of the thesis is to interpret the ITSP process as it occurred within the Organisation. A subsidiary aim is to contribute to a better understanding of the ITSP process in general.
