The Archaeology Of Masculinity: The Process Of Personal Archaeology In The Creative Arts, Lindsay James Duncan Jan 1995

The Archaeology Of Masculinity: The Process Of Personal Archaeology In The Creative Arts, Lindsay James Duncan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Contemporary gender studies reveal the evolution of a plurality of masculinities since World War Two. The associated social change surrounding masculinity has demanded a re-evaluation of gender roles by Western men who, historically, have not been encouraged to be introspective about their emotional development. However, when compelled by circumstances to examine some of the forces which have moulded their lives and which keep them in bondage they become aware that the traditional values surrounding patriarchal politics, women, war, religion and death are no longer adequate. A major factor in this inadequacy is that traditional role models have been superseded by …

The Spiritual Bricoleur: An Artist's Search For Personal Identity Within An Investigation Of Postnational And Postcolonial Identity, Norio Takamiya

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This research centres on an artist's search for personal identity in the late twentieth century—in a postnational and postcolonial context. A n autobiographical approach has been used to show how this Japanese artist's identity has been built from the ambivalence between personal and social matters, tradition and modernity, rural culture and urban culture and the East and West. The research has been expressed through a series of major exhibitions of artworks, including two preliminary exhibitions in 'The Long Gallery', University of Wollongong and exhibitions under the following titles, Where Have I Come From? - Where Am I Going? Holdsworth Galleries, …

Intelligent Graph-Search Techniques: An Application To Project Scheduling Under Multiple Resource Constraints, Mohammad Reza Zamani Jan 1995

Intelligent Graph-Search Techniques: An Application To Project Scheduling Under Multiple Resource Constraints, Mohammad Reza Zamani

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The topic of graph-search techniques is of common interest for both Operations Research (OR) and Artificial Intelligence (AT) communities. Solutions found by OR techniques are optimal and precise but may be obtained at the price of high computation time. On the other hand, those found by AI techniques have no guarantee of being optimal but are usually achieved quickly. In this research, these techniques of AI and OR are investigated and a learning search method integrating the features of both fields is presented. The main characteristics of this method are its capacity to learn along the search process and its …

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Conformationally Restricted Amino Acids, Javad Safaei Ghomi Jan 1995

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Conformationally Restricted Amino Acids, Javad Safaei Ghomi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis describes new approaches to the asymmetric synthesis of cyclic non-proteinogenic α-amino acids (NPAAs) and amino acid derivatives from (2R)-3-benzoyl-4-methylene-2-phenyloxazolidin-5-one. In the first Chapter, an overview of the strategies used for the synthesis of these compounds and also their biological activities was provided. It was found that for the preparation of cyclic α-amino acids in high enantiomeric purity, starting materials with a chiral auxiliary have generally been employed.

In Chapter Two, the synthesis of cyclic NPAAs, through the thermally induced Diels-Alder reactions of (2R )-3-benzoyl-4-methylene-2- phenyloxazolidin-5-one (8) and substituted 1,3-butadienes and substituted 1,3-cyclohexadienes was explored. In general, the reactions …

Chromatographic Studies On The Properties Of Polypyrrole And Polyaniline, Hawick Chriswanto

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis describes a study of the physicochemical properties of conductive polymers. Although these polymers have been investigated extensively for more than a decade, studies of their properties employing chromatographic methods are still very limited. In this work high performance liquid chromatography was employed to investigate the properties of polypyrrole and polyaniline. Their performance as a chromatographic stationary phase was also examined.

For the purpose of this study polypyrrole containing chloride and dodecylsulfate, and polyaniline with chloride, were chemically synthesized and deposited on to silica particles. The surface coating was determined by elemental analysis. Series of standard test compounds were …

Electrospray Mass Spectrometry Of Peptides And Lens Proteins, Greg Wayne Kilby Jan 1995

Electrospray Mass Spectrometry Of Peptides And Lens Proteins, Greg Wayne Kilby

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Mammalian lenses, including human and bovine, contain three major classes of soluble lens proteins α-, β-, and γ-crystallins. Each respective class of crystallins is comprised several closely-related subunits ranging in molecular weight from 20-30 kDa. A variety of gel filtration chromatography, fast protein liquid chromatography, and ion exchange chromatography methods have been used to isolate the individual protein subunits from bovine lenses which then have been examined by electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). This study shows the considerable advantages (and some short-comings) ESI-MS has for the examination of the bovine lens crystallins.

ESI-MS of α-crystallins showed the two major subunits (and …

Multifrequency Signal Enhancement And Estimation Using Iir Filter Bank Structures, Mehdi Tavassoli Kilani Jan 1995

Multifrequency Signal Enhancement And Estimation Using Iir Filter Bank Structures, Mehdi Tavassoli Kilani

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis deals with the accurate estimation of phase, amplitude and frequency of sinusoids buried in noise. Several algorithms are proposed to determine these parameters.

A Constrained Notch Fourier Transform (CNFT) is proposed for estimating the Fourier coefficients of noise corrupted harmonic signals given a priori knowledge of the signal frequencies. The proposed method provides bandwidth controlled bandpass filters in contrast to the conventional Notch Fourier Transform (NFT) [Tadokoro and Abe (1987)] and its equivalent real valued Frequency Sampling (FS) structures which utilise fixed bandwidth bandpass filters. New sliding algorithms have been derived for both the NFT and CNFT for …

Optimising Alumina Feeders In Aluminium Smelting Pots, J. P. Kissane

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Crustbreak/feeding systems in prebake aluminium smelting pots are critical to efficient pot control as they contribute in a large way to the alumina balance in the pot. Inefficient feeder and pot operation may cause emission of global warming gases, severe cost penalties and may affect the health and safety of operating personnel This study investigated the causes of failure and the performance of existing designs. Most of the research was conducted at Portland Aluminium (Victoria) and contact was made with about 30 smelters world-wide.

Methods have been developed to improve shot size accuracy, reduce costs, increase crustbreak/feeder life and improved …

An Examination On New Issues In The Malaysian Stock Market, Noor Azuddin Yakob Jan 1995

An Examination On New Issues In The Malaysian Stock Market, Noor Azuddin Yakob

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In the seventies and early eighties, new issues in the Malaysian stock market were reported to be excessively underpriced relative to the other stock markets of the world. Previous studies suggest that such practice was the result of deliberate action by the Government which controls the new issues market. Nonetheless, the secondary market was found to be efficient in pricing the new issues in the aftermarket. This study is designed to investigate the pattern of underpricing in recent years to determine whether such practice is still prevalent. It goes further to identify the factors that influence the level of underpricing …

Computer Aided Design And Analysis Of Sapan Dalam Open Pit Mine: A Case Study, Milawarma Jan 1995

Computer Aided Design And Analysis Of Sapan Dalam Open Pit Mine: A Case Study, Milawarma

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Geologically, the Sapan Dalam coal deposit of Indonesia consists of steeply dipping miilti-seams of variable thickness which are interrupted by four major faults. The deposit had been proved with 27 drill holes at an average spacing of 200 metres. The existing mine had been planned manually and as such provides little flexibility to cope with changes in mining conditions. With the aid of a commercial mine planning package (developed by GEMCOM Service Inc.), computer aided technique was used to build the deposit model and evaluate its economic viability. The four basic phases of mine planning (exploration database management, deposit modelling, …

Fuzzy Control Design Based On Genetic Algorithms, Zibo Zhang Jan 1995

Fuzzy Control Design Based On Genetic Algorithms, Zibo Zhang

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A new methodology for design of fuzzy controllers based on Genetic Algorithms has been proposed. The developed design tool initially identifies an approximate model for a system based on a small set of input/output data of the plant. The system identification is also performed based on Genetic Algorithms. The model is then used in the design procedure. The tuning can be carried out either on the membership functions or the fuzzy rules of the fuzzy controller. The method can be applied to linear and non linear SISO and MIMO systems with time delay and unknown structure. Experimental observations show that …

Ferrite Formation From Deformed Austenite In Nb-V And Nb-V-Ti Microalloyed Steels, Amung Somantri Jan 1995

Ferrite Formation From Deformed Austenite In Nb-V And Nb-V-Ti Microalloyed Steels, Amung Somantri

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A study of the grain coarsening characteristics in C-Mn, Nb-V and Nb-V-Ti steels has shown that the grain coarsening occurs at a low temperature (< 950®C) in the cast C-Mn steel. This seems due to the low solution temperature of the AIN grain boundary pinning particles. However, the grain coarsening temperature ( GCT) can be increased by microalloy additions for Nb-V and Nb-V-Ti steels. Ferrite formation from deformed austenite has been investigated in C-Mn, Nb-V and Nb-V-Ti steels after single pass hot rolling. Rolling reductions were given in the range 20%-60% in temperature range 850°C - 1050°C and the deformed samples were transformed isothermally to ferrite at 680*'C for up to 1800 sec.

Acid Sulphate Soils In The Berry Region, New South Wales: Baseline Studies And Preliminary Assessment Of Management Options, Bart Sbeghen

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In the northern section of the Shoalhaven River floodplain, flood mitigation drains have worsened the impacts of acid sulphate soils. Such impacts include levels of pH and aluminium in the drains and estuary that are potentially fatal to flora and fauna, especially after heavy rains. This study concentrates on four properties to the south of Berry on 251 hectares of improved pastoral land.

Water quality was monitored in wells, drainsites and in Broughton Creek over a 15 week period from June to September 1994 that was drier than average. Soils were also sampled and analysed.

Actual and potential acid sulphate …

Evaluation Of A Correspondence Fat Loss Program For Men, Anne-Maree Parrish Jan 1995

Evaluation Of A Correspondence Fat Loss Program For Men, Anne-Maree Parrish

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study compares fat loss of 45 Australian men involved in a correspondence 'waist' loss program' with participants in a group based 'waist' loss program (O'Neill 1993). The format of the correspondence program and the group based program is very similar. Initially, it was believed that the group based program may be more effective than the correspondence program, as the men in the correspondence program did not have group support. The correspondence participants received a kit containing audio cassettes, book, handouts and a tape measure to enable them to conduct their waist Joss program at home. Evaluation questionnaires were posted …

Barriers To Providing Quality Nutrition Care For People With Developmental Disabilities Living In Group Homes: A Survey Of The Warringah Area, Nicole Circuitt

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Changes in the living conditions of people with developmental disabilities, from institutions to group homes, has meant a shift of responsibility for nutrition care. Within the Waningah Area, the high dependence of residents, and hence their reliance on staff members being educated and knowledgeable regarding their needs, raises doubts over the quality of nutrition care being delivered. The purpose of this study was to deterinine the nutrition knowledge of staff of group homes, and whether nutrition education for staff in group homes is required. Seventy per cent of an estimated 205 staff returned questionnaires for analysis. Eighty-three per cent of …

Oxidative Sensitivity Of Alternative Functions Of The Glycolytic Enzyme, Glyceraldehyde-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Jacqueline Helen Scherret Jan 1995

Oxidative Sensitivity Of Alternative Functions Of The Glycolytic Enzyme, Glyceraldehyde-3-Phosphate Dehydrogenase, Jacqueline Helen Scherret

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The glycolytic enzyme, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH), is susceptible to inflammatory oxidants such as hypochlorite (OCl") and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Evidence [1] suggests that the monomeric form of GAPDH exhibits uracil-DNA glycosylase (UDG) activity. As oxidative damage has often been implicated as a possible cause of carcinogenesis, the sensitivity of UDG to inflammatory oxidants was investigated. An assay, modified from Sirover (1979) [2], was developed which successfully quantitated the UDG activity of both bacterial UDG and UDG extracted from a human cell line, HCT 116. UDG activity in these cells was proportional to cell number, with an upper limit of 2.5 …

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the role of four upper body skin regions in the regulation of thermal sweating. Eight male subjects were exposed to two environments during which the local skin temperature (T^ki) four skin regions (head, upper arm, forearm and hand) were elevated or reduced by 3°C from a neutral temperature. Body core and skin temperature were recorded from multiple sites, while sweat rate were simultaneously measured at eight skin regions. Sweat rate was found to increase both at the site of local temperature change and at the other seven sites. Between-site differences were not …

An Application Of Hamiltonian Neurodynamics Using Pontryagin's Maximum (Minimum) Principle, Takamasa Koshizen Jan 1995

An Application Of Hamiltonian Neurodynamics Using Pontryagin's Maximum (Minimum) Principle, Takamasa Koshizen

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Hamiltonians can generate Artificial Neural Dynamical systems dependent on time. Classical methods from optimal control theory, notably Pontryagin's Maximum (Minimum) principle (PMP) can be employed, together with Hamiltonians, in order to determine the optimal weights. Today, although several extended-backpropagation methods using optimization theory have been developed based on the well known standard backpropagation algorithm (SBP), feedforward multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks are here employed on differential equations which have characteristics such as admitting neurons and time dependent weight vectors . In this thesis, it is shown that the PMP learning rule obtained using PMP compares favourably with SBP. As a …

Change-over designs for 2xk factorial experiments (k = 2,3,4...) and a control treatment are investigated for t treatments, t periods and It experimental units. Designs which give more precise …

Interactive Decision Support Systems And Activity Theory: A Population Projection Flow Model For Strategic Planning In Education, Edward Gould Jan 1995

Interactive Decision Support Systems And Activity Theory: A Population Projection Flow Model For Strategic Planning In Education, Edward Gould

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Population modeling is an important component in educational decision support systems. This thesis describes how a problem faced by demographers in predicting school based populations can be solved by the use of a decision support system based on a model which balances micro based population values derived at school levels against more accurate nationally derived figures. The approach taken is to use an interactive human-centred computerized solution so that demographers can make full use of their local knowledge, intuition and experience. Because of the interactive nature of the model, concentration is focused on the active position of the user. To …

The aim of this study was to determine the use of the healthcare system by people with HIV /AIDS, and to identify and compare variations in service provision to patients with similar needs, and variations between needs and service provision. The variations would suggest changes in service management in the interests of improvements in cost /effectiveness.

Central to health service management is the need for information. The primary hypothesis of this study is that information systems need to be refined to support management of AIDS/HIV as a chronic, infectious condition, from initial manifestation through to death. It is hypothesized that …

Surrealist Painting In Yogyakarta, Martinus Dwi Marianto Jan 1995

Surrealist Painting In Yogyakarta, Martinus Dwi Marianto

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Surrealist painting flourished in Yogyakarta around the middle of the 1980s to early 1990s. It became popular amongst art students in Yogyakarta, and formed a significant style of painting which generally is characterised by the use of casual juxtapositions of disparate ideas and subjects resulting in absurd, startling, and sometimes disturbing images.

In this thesis, Yogyakartan Surrealism is seen as the expression in painting of various social, cultural, and economic developments taking place rapidly and simultaneously in Yogyakarta's urban landscape. Significantly, the structure of Yogyakartan Surrealist painting has been aligned with forms of Yogyakatan language patterns, in particular the punning …

An Investigation Of Memory Deficits In Long-Term And Short-Term Memory In Dysphoric College Students, Chul Woo Lee Jan 1995

An Investigation Of Memory Deficits In Long-Term And Short-Term Memory In Dysphoric College Students, Chul Woo Lee

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Previous studies on depression have suggested that depression is accompanied by memory disturbances such as memory deficits (Hasher & Zacks, 1979; Ellis & Ashbrook, 1988; Hartlage, Alloy, Vazquez, & Dykman, 1993). The thesis aims to explore depressive memory deficits in terms of long-term and short-term memory, employing precision of elaboration and memory span tasks respectively.

The long-term memory deficits focused on elaboration deficits using a subjectgenerated elaboration method (Stein, & Bransford, 1979). Regarding elaboration deficits in depression, several studies suggested that memory deficits in recall occur in tasks requiring elaborative processing such as in semantic processing within the depth of …
