The Potential For Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi To Influence The Recovery Of Hawkesbury Sandstone Vegetation After Disturbance, Stanley Edward Bellgard Jan 1992

The Potential For Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi To Influence The Recovery Of Hawkesbury Sandstone Vegetation After Disturbance, Stanley Edward Bellgard

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Disturbance to plant communities by agricultural and mining practices is an inevitable intrinsic part of civilization. Growing public, political and scientific concern about problems such as land degradation and the greenhouse effect is increasing interest in revegetation as a counter-measure. One of the primary stresses imposed upon seedlings colonizing disturbed sites is a lack of nutrients. Plants species colonized by vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi have higher tissue levels of some inorganic nutrients (especially phosphorus), greater biomass yield, and more rapid uptake of water, and they are often more tolerant of various forms of stress than non-mycorrhizal plants of the same …

Determination Of Odour Compounds In Surface Waters, Wolfgang Korth Jan 1992

Determination Of Odour Compounds In Surface Waters, Wolfgang Korth

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Deuterated geosmin [trans-1,10-[2H3]-dimethyl-9α-decaloll and deuterated 2- methylisoborneol [2-exo-hydroxy-2-[2H3]-methylbornane] have been synthesised and evaluated as internal standards in the determination of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) in water by closed loop stripping analysis (CLSA) followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in either the full scan or multiple ion detection mode (MID).

The labelled standards were compared with chloroalkanes added as internal standards either at the time of sampling or immediately before closed loop stripping. When added at sampling time, the new standards enabled accurate determination of the geosmin and MIB …

Sedimentary History Of The Early Cretaceous Otway Group, Otway Basin, Australia, Elizabeth Anne Felton Jan 1992

Sedimentary History Of The Early Cretaceous Otway Group, Otway Basin, Australia, Elizabeth Anne Felton

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The non-marine ?Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous Casterton Formation and overlying Early Cretaceous Otway Group are the oldest known rocks in the Otway Basin, one of several extensional basins that developed along the rifting southern margin of Australia. The two units were deposited in grabens and half-grabens on pre-Mesozoic basement and are currently known mainly from the subsurface.

Seven sedimentary lithofacies comprise the Casterton Formation and overlying Otway Group. The sedimentary environments represented by these lithofacies comprise a range of alluvial settings. The Casterton Formation comprises Lithofacies I, which is predominantly lacustrine, and Lithofacies II, alluvial fan/valley fill. In the …

Place, Pastoral And The Politics Of The Personal: A Semi Genre-Based Exploration Of D.H. Lawrence's Kangaroo, Joseph Lenehan Davis Jan 1992

Place, Pastoral And The Politics Of The Personal: A Semi Genre-Based Exploration Of D.H. Lawrence's Kangaroo, Joseph Lenehan Davis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The thesis argues that Kangaroo is both an unnoticed example of the modern pastoral novel and a development of those variants of the pastoral genre which Renato Poggioli has designated 'pastorals of solitude'.1 While another critic, John Alcorn, has previously made a courageous start in identifying Aaron's Rod as a 'pastoral travel novel',2 it is the primary aim of this thesis to explore D.H. Lawrence's Kangaroo as an example of Lawrence's continuing utilization and development of the pastoral conventions with which he began his career as a novelist in The White Peacock.

Its task is to examine the ways in …

Aspects Of The Career Of Alexander Berry, 1781-1873, Barry John Bridges Jan 1992

Aspects Of The Career Of Alexander Berry, 1781-1873, Barry John Bridges

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Alexander Berry arrived in Sydney in 1819 a penniless merchant adventurer with a shipload of goods on credit and a partner, Edward Wollstonecraft, whose strengths and weaknesses were complementary to his own. Berry's great achievement was development at Shoalhaven of what his contemporaries deemed the finest estate in New South Wales and possibly the Empire. He sat in the Legislative Council for thirty-three years. He was the most forthright advocate for large-landowner hegemony, the first to articulate the case for protection, was for some years spokesman for Church of Scotland loyalists, resisted movement to democracy and opposed the spread of …

The Excitation And Fano Resonance Spectra Of Some Acceptors In Silicon And Germanium, Gejin Piao Jan 1992

The Excitation And Fano Resonance Spectra Of Some Acceptors In Silicon And Germanium, Gejin Piao

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Rich and well resolved p3/2 and p1/2 optical absorption spectra have been observed for indium in silicon and p3/2 spectra for singly ionised zinc, Zn-, in germanium, revealing some new transitions and permitting re-examination in detail of the transition energies, level schemes and deformation potential constants. Ratios of about 4.2 and 4.1 for the binding energies of Zn- in germanium to those of group III impurities and neutral zinc in germanium, respectively, were determined. A comparison with theoretical energies was made, showing excellent agreement.

A set of asymmetric and broad excitation features was observed …

The Development And Evaluation Of A Modified Cognitive-Behavioural Treatment For Musical Performance Anxiety, David Roland Jan 1992

The Development And Evaluation Of A Modified Cognitive-Behavioural Treatment For Musical Performance Anxiety, David Roland

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Performance anxiety is common amongst both amateur and professional performers. It can lead to a loss of enjoyment in performance, a deterioration in the quality of that performance, or at its worst, the complete cessation of performance. In attempting to treat musical performance anxiety psychologists have concentrated on standard cognitive and behavioural treatments including progressive muscle relaxation, self-instructional training, rational emotive therapy, behaviour rehearsal and systematic desensitization. These methods have generally been shown to be effective in reducing performance anxiety.

The first preliminary study of this thesis compared the individual and combined effectiveness of progressive muscle relaxation and self-instructional training. …

Managerial Strategy And Industrial Relations In Telecom Australia, Robert Macklin Jan 1992

Managerial Strategy And Industrial Relations In Telecom Australia, Robert Macklin

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Within the industrial relations literature there has been a growth in publications that utilise the concept of 'managerial strategy'. Many writers use the concept as a simple shorthand description of managerial actions and decisions; other writers use it for solely normative purposes. However, a significant nimiber of writers claim that the concept can be used to effectively explain industrial relations activity and arrangements, and also as a way of redressing problems inherent in traditional theoretical approaches to industrial relations. This thesis examines these claims and also seeks to contribute to several debates concerning the concept of 'managerial strategy' that are …

Switching Strategies For Active Power Filters, Damrong Dejsakulrit Jan 1992

Switching Strategies For Active Power Filters, Damrong Dejsakulrit

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis is concerned with the development of simple and effective switching strategies for active power filtering appUcations. A switching strategy for active power filters which has been presented recently is based on an Equal-Sampling Technique (EST). This approach involves the solution of a set of non-linear equations. The main difficulty with the EST is its high computational burden and slow response when load current changes take place. A Modified Equal Sampling Technique (MEST) and a Centroid Based Technique (CBT) are proposed in this thesis. The proposed strategies are computationally simpler to implement and in both cases provide equal or …

The Effects Of Bed Depth, Basicity And Suction On Sintering Technology, Liborio Münive Jan 1992

The Effects Of Bed Depth, Basicity And Suction On Sintering Technology, Liborio Münive

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Experimental studies on the effects of bed depth, basicity and suction on sintering at Australian Iron & Steel Pty Ltd were successfully carried out and introduced through Sintering Plant trials. Two new Sintering Process Models were developed during the experiment. The effectiveness of the second model was verified by its producing an orderly positioning of each combination of parameters, particularly, in the test series to study the effects of suction on sintering. This was a significant contribution to sintering technology. An improvement in productivity and sinter quality, and a marked changes in the sinter microstructural composition and texture were achieved.

A Study Of Factors Influencing The Fat Consumption Of An Adolescent Sample Aged 15-16 Years: Dietary Behaviours, Nutrition-Related Attitudes And Perceived Self-Efficacy, Jennifer Kennedy

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Poor dietary habits - many of wliich influence fat consumption - are often in evidence during adolescence and these constitute both an immediate and remote health risk. To reduce the incidence of cardiovascular risk-related behaviours in adulthood, some preventive dietary measures should begin in childhood. The focus of this study was the measurement of behaviours consistent with recommendations for a reduction in dietary fat consumption. The aim was to develop some understanding of psycho-social determinants that may promote health-enhancing behaviours in adolescence. The sample was drawn from Year 10 students (aged 15 years) at Bulli High School. Sixty one subjects …

Influence Of Dietary Linoleic Acid (18:2, N6) On The Effects Of Hyperthyroidism In Mus Musculus, Nalini Deshpande Jan 1992

Influence Of Dietary Linoleic Acid (18:2, N6) On The Effects Of Hyperthyroidism In Mus Musculus, Nalini Deshpande

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This investigation was stimulated by the earlier findings of Ershoff (1949). He reported that a diet containing 45% (w/w) full fat soybean meal counteracted the weight loss and other effects of hyperthyroidism on the gross appearance (for example scaly skin and hair loss) of the immature rats. However, he observed that this dietary treatment did not have any effect on the increased oxygen consumption caused by thyroid hormone treatment. More recent studies have shown that unsaturated fatty acids inhibit thyroid hormone binding to nucleus (Van der Klis, 1989, Inoue et al., 1989, Wiersinga and Platvoet-Ter-Schiphorst, 1990). It has also been …

Isolating Corporate Network Faults Through The Application Of Expert Systems, Peter Asquith Jan 1992

Isolating Corporate Network Faults Through The Application Of Expert Systems, Peter Asquith

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Telecommunication systems provide organisations with opportunities for improved performance through reduced information overheads. However, the increased reliance on network services comes at a price. More complex networks require more sophisticated management and control. Like all computer systems, network management systems will need to incorporate greater "intelligence" in order to further automate their tasks.

Percival Lowell: The Sage As Astronomer, David Sutton Dolan Jan 1992

Percival Lowell: The Sage As Astronomer, David Sutton Dolan

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Percival Lowell's controversial hypothesis (1895) that Mars was inhabited by intelligent beings operating a global network of canals received self contradictory treatment in many basic astronomy textbooks and popularisations of the early and mid twentieth century. Though generally said to have had no scientific credibility, analysis of a large sample of texts reveals that it actually enjoyed a high level of overt and covert support, until cl965 when falsified by Mariner spaceprobes. This supposedly discredited hypothesis also continued to influence research programs up to the 1977 Viking Mars landers. Three main themes are explored to account for the anomalous strength …

The Deskilling Of Registered Nurses: The Social Transformation Of Nursing Work In A New South Wales Hospital, 1970-1990, Elizabeth Herdman Jan 1992

The Deskilling Of Registered Nurses: The Social Transformation Of Nursing Work In A New South Wales Hospital, 1970-1990, Elizabeth Herdman

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study tests the validity of the enskilling thesis as it applies to registered nurses in a major New South Wales public hospital from 1970 to 1990. From a critical sociological perspective it examines the social transformation of nursing work during this period.

A major problem in nursing literature, past and present, is the fact that the experiences of the practising nurse have been obscured by the dominance of the idealised image of nursing which focusses on the 'ideal' rather than the experiences of the practising nurse.

As a case study of nursing work this thesis builds upon feminist analyses …

A Constructivist Theory Of Learning: Implications For Teaching, Graham Dale Hendry Jan 1992

A Constructivist Theory Of Learning: Implications For Teaching, Graham Dale Hendry

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Introduction In everyday use, the word 'learning' typically means "the action of acquiring knowledge" (Oxford English Dictionary, OED). Given this common definition, how learning occurs is the main problem upon which this thesis focuses. If within an educational system we adopt a goal of helping young people to learn, and assume a legal and moral responsibility to achieve this goal, then the question of how learning occurs is crucial, because it is from a logical theory that we can derive pedagogical practices which will (according to a theory) promote learning in young people, rather than hinder it, or render it …

The Effects Of Music In Television Commercials, Stephen Arthur Watson Jan 1992

The Effects Of Music In Television Commercials, Stephen Arthur Watson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Music functions as an advertising 'instrument' in television commercials to enhance the marketing effectiveness of goods and services. Evaluating the effects of music on responses, however, is often intuitive, largely because of the difficulties of obtaining data uncontaminated by the visuals, and other consumer-related factors.

This study was designed to measure empirically the effects of music on responses in television commercials. To test the hypotheses, original and alternate music versions of each of three television commercials were utilised. In all three commercials the music was different between versions, and also differed in levels of musical stimulation. The alternate (experimental) versions …

Each participant was asked to complete a 3-day food diary from which nutrient intakes were calculated for energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate. Current height and weight measurements and an estimate of pre-pregnancy weight were obtained.

Functional Differentiation Within Radiate Muscles, Murray Paton Jan 1992

Functional Differentiation Within Radiate Muscles, Murray Paton

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

adiate muscles differ to other structural classifications of muscles in that each fibre has a different line of action. Acting together, the muscles' fibres will draw the insertion towards a point on the origin which has a line of action equivalent to the sum of all the lines of action of the muscle. Acting alone or in combinations, the fibres would be able to produce a large number of motions previously unattainable to the entire muscle. If the Central Nervous System is able to selectively activate particular portions of the muscle to 'fine tune' the motion, the motion would be …

The Development And Testing Of A Conceptual Model For The Analysis Of Contemporry Developmental Relationships In Nursing, Caroline M. Wright Jan 1992

The Development And Testing Of A Conceptual Model For The Analysis Of Contemporry Developmental Relationships In Nursing, Caroline M. Wright

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The purpose of this study was to develop and statistically analyse a conceptual model of contemporary developmental relationships in nursing. The conceptual model was formulated a priori and was based on both empirical and conceptual literature. No attempt was made to draw a distinction between concepts of preceptor and mentor and focused on all helping, supporting, developmental relationships that nurses form with their colleagues. The study population was selected by means of stratification by area of and random selection, and was drawn from the nursing population in hospitals and higher education institutions in New South Wales (n=445). A nonexperimental retrospective …

An Encryption Package For Unix, Dzung Le Jan 1992

An Encryption Package For Unix, Dzung Le

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Cryptography has a much wider application than secrecy, such as authentication and digital signature. There are two common types of cryptographic algoritlims - symmetric and asymmetric. The Data Encryption Standaid (DES) is the first and only, publicly available cryptographic algoritlim tliat has been widely used in commercial conmiunication. The DES is a block cipher symmetric algoritlim and its design is based on the Shannon's two general principles - diffusion and confusion. With the decreased cost of hardware and a better understanding of block ciphers and cryptanalysis techniques, a number of DES-like ciphers have been proposed as the replacement for DES. …

Identification And Analysis Of Acoustic Features In Ultrasonic Echoes, David Evans Jan 1992

Identification And Analysis Of Acoustic Features In Ultrasonic Echoes, David Evans

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Some dolphin and bat species have developed highly sophisticated echolocation systems. These systems allow the species to navigate and hunt very effectively. They are able to do so because their echolocation systems extract extensive information from sonar echoes. Man made sonar systems gather very limited information (usually range only) from sonar echoes. This project investigates extracting much more information than just range from the echo of signals produced by a Polaroid transducer. To carry out this investigation, software and hardware were constructed to generate and capture ultrasonic signals. As well, software tools were written to aid in the analysis of …

Sediment Transport Of Fine-Grained Alluvium From Cooper Creek, Central Australia, Jerry Christopher Maroulis Jan 1992

Sediment Transport Of Fine-Grained Alluvium From Cooper Creek, Central Australia, Jerry Christopher Maroulis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The ability of mud aggregates to form depositional bedforms is of considerable sedimentological importance for explaining the geomorphology of the Channel Country of Central Australia as well as the depositional environment of certain argillaceous fluvial sequences in the rock record. The sediment transport and bedform development of an aggregated sediment obtained from the floodplain of Cooper Creek, Central Australia, was examined in a laboratory flume over a range of flow conditions. The aggregates were found to be clay-rich (>60% clay), fine sand-sized (d50=0.10 mm), low density (2300 kg.m-3), water-stable and contained very low salt levels (<0.02%). The presence of smectite in the clay mineralogy of the sediment is an important factor in the development of the aggregates. Disaggregated sediment could be reaggregated in a laboratory after 2-3 wetting/drying cycles under simulated field conditions. Bedforms of aggregated mud ranging from lower-regime plane beds to upper-regime antidunes were observed. In the flume, the aggregates moved predominantly as bedload with measured peak bedload concentrations being high compared to other flume studies. The highly mobile nature of the sediment is due to the ready entrainment of low-density aggregates. The occurrence of braid bars formed of mud in an extensive low-gradient arid environment evident in the Channel Country of Central Australia, can be attributed to steeper braid-channel gradients across the floodplains during the passage of a flood; the highly mobile nature of the low-density sediment aggregates; the abiUty of the aggregates to be transported as bedload and their durable nature within the flow.
