Studies On The Nucleic Acids Of Bacteria Isolated From Greening And Dieback Infected Citrus, Gonzalo Hortelano Hap Jan 1991

Studies On The Nucleic Acids Of Bacteria Isolated From Greening And Dieback Infected Citrus, Gonzalo Hortelano Hap

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Greening disease is a severe disease of citrus affecting crops in Southern Africa and Asia. The disease is thought to be caused by bacteria seen in planta by electron microscopy. In Australia, Australian citrus dieback (ACD) has symptoms which closely resemble those of greening, although the aetiological agent requires confirmation. A number of bacterial isolates with an ultrastructure similar to that described for the putative causal agent of greening have been studied. The DNA from the different organisms was compared by pulsed field gel electrophoresis after bacterial restriction endonuclease digestion analysis (BRENDA) using a number of endonucleases, and restriction fragment …

The Wollongong Personal Computer: Aspects Of Software, Gary J. Stafford Jan 1991

The Wollongong Personal Computer: Aspects Of Software, Gary J. Stafford

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis describes the design of a small personal computer, which has the hardware design influenced by the requirements of the operating system, and the operating system design influenced by the considerations of hardware efficiency and cost. The operating system has its requirements met with simple hardware support. The hardware is constrained to provide support which can be conveniently used by the operating system. Various units of the machine are looked at in detail and novel approaches are suggested which will allow software to make best use of the hardware. The video memory board allows multiple pixels to be simultaneously …

Effect Of Self-Monitoring Strategies On Motor Skill Performance, Michael Bradley Martin Jan 1991

Effect Of Self-Monitoring Strategies On Motor Skill Performance, Michael Bradley Martin

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

If individuals wish to change or self-regulate their behaviour then it is necessary to self-monitor existing behaviours. Current self-monitoring theory embodies two principles which suggest that: 1. for difficult tasks, positive self-monitoring improves performance, while negative self-monitoring impairs performance, and 2. for easy tasks, positive self-monitoring impairs performance, while negative self-monitoring improves performance. However, the effect of implementing the various self-monitoring strategies as task complexity changes is unknown. The project consisted of a series of three studies that enlisted 42 university student subjects, 17 males and 25 females (M = 24.8 yrs.). The first study ascertained subjects' performance scores and …

The Dynamics Of Underwater Explosions, John Philip Best Jan 1991

The Dynamics Of Underwater Explosions, John Philip Best

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The two principal phenomena associated with an underwater explosion are bubble motion and shock wave propagation. In this thesis both are investigated.

The study of bubble dynamics proceeds by assuming irrotational flow in incompressible and inviscid fluid. A technique is developed for the derivation equations of motion for a spherical bubble in flow domains of simple geometry. The concept of the Kelvin impulse is exploited in this endeavour. The model is used to infer the behaviour of bubbles that deform from spherical shape.

The boundary integral method is then employed to compute the motion of underwater explosion bubbles. The pressure within …

Innovation, Technology Strategy And The Role Of External Technology Search Mechanisms, John Currie Jan 1991

Innovation, Technology Strategy And The Role Of External Technology Search Mechanisms, John Currie

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In Australia considerable attention has been focused in the past few years on the position of our international competitiveness. In the deregulated world of the 1980's it is not always possible for governments to rely solely on adjusting of the economic levers with the use of macroeconomic factors such as monetary, fiscal and income policies. Attention has been shifted to the long-term goals of structural alteration and reform at the microeconomic level of the individual firm. Emphasis on the more efficient allocation of resources, appropriateness and timing of technological investment, improved organisational, managerial and labour pracitices and the ability to …

The Use Of Marketing Information In The New Product Development Process: An Empirical Investigation, Elias Kyriazis Jan 1991

The Use Of Marketing Information In The New Product Development Process: An Empirical Investigation, Elias Kyriazis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The new product development process, and the use of marketing information, have each received a considerable amount of research interest in their own right. However, the relationship between the two areas has been largely neglected by researchers. Due to the critical importance of new product development activities to the continued viability of many companies, especially in an increasingly competitive global environment, this lack of attention is surprising. The thesis of this study is that the use of marketing information in the new product development process is an important one for corporate activity if such a process is to be successful. …

A Short History Of State Education Policy For Gifted And Talented Children In New South Wales 1788-1989, Janice M. Hall

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The recent recognition by educationists in general, and the New South Wales Department of School Education in particular, of the educational and social needs of gifted and talented children, has raised many questions for educators to consider. Before these can be answered it is necessary to review the New South Wales history of State Education Policy for gifted and talented children.

This thesis describes an investigation of the history of education policy making for gifted and talented children within N.S.W. Department of School Education from 1788 to 1989. This investigation has revealed that no formal Government Policy existed until 1983, …

"Posh Writing": Empowering Secondary Students To Write The Discourse Of History Effectively, Riddhi Devi Bargon

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study examines the extent to which two students develop control over the expository genre of writing in their creation of historical texts.

Halliday's functional model of language provides the linguistic theoretical framework for the study.

Year 10 History students were exposed to a style of teaching which was based on the Disadvantaged Schools Program's pedagogical framework; 'The Curriculum Genre'. Interactive guidance and assistance were at the core of teaching strategies used by the teacher/researcher.

Ten essays written by two Year 10 students were analysed in terms of generic (schematic) structure, themes/reference, conjunctions and nomina/,isations, participants and processes.

The findings …

Cost Effective Navigation Of Mobile Robots, David Sydney Colless Jan 1991

Cost Effective Navigation Of Mobile Robots, David Sydney Colless

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The navigation of a robot from a source to a target location is a process that requires the gathering and use of environmental information. This process is costly in terms of both sensor equipment and computer processing power.

This thesis attempts to minimise these costs by looking at minimal environment information. This is to be achieved using readily available components and computer algorithms designed to make the most of the information collected. A simple implementation of Dead Reckoning has been employed to demonstrate the gains made.

Significant savings can be achieved using these methods.

The Effect Of Solute Stress On The Petite Mutation In Yeast, William 'Anitimoni Petelo Jan 1991

The Effect Of Solute Stress On The Petite Mutation In Yeast, William 'Anitimoni Petelo

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

An increased proportion of petite mutants was observed when mid-exponential cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were transferred to a salt broth containing 10% NaCl as compared to a low spontaneous proportion that arose 'before transfer' (normal culture) to the salt broth. The proportion of mutants arising from salt exposure is a characteristic of individual yeast strains. This increase in proportion of mutants appeared to be due to the mutagenic action of the salt stress, rather then an enhanced survival of the pre-existing petite strains before salt stress. Petite mutants were not inherentiy more resistant to salt stress than the parent strains. …

Abrasive Wear Of Ferrous Alloys, Liqun Xu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The investigation reported in this thesis was carried out to study the abrasive wear behaviour of three groups of ferrous alloys, comprising ten carbon steels, three tool steels and four high-strength low-alloy steels, with the particular emphasis on the effect of microstructure. Wear tests were conducted using an unlubricated pin-on-drum machine, with silicon carbide, alumina and garnet abrasive papers, and a standard test condition of 20N applied load, 50mm/s sliding speed and 6m wear path.

The inter-relationships between wear resistance, microstructure, hardness and carbon content were studied using the carbon steels containing 0.10%C to 1.4%C. For constant hardness and carbon …

Telling Tales: Rider Haggard's Short Stories, Michael Arrighi Jan 1991

Telling Tales: Rider Haggard's Short Stories, Michael Arrighi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Given the absence of critical studies of Rider Haggard's short stories, this study critically examines the short stories finding in them justification for the claim that after the outstanding successes of King Solomon's Mines, She, and Allan Quatermain there is a notable decline in Haggard's writing. As a critical perspective of this phenomenon, the Introduction examines biographical factors conditioning the quality of Haggard's writing and offers a brief history of the nineteenth century short story genre. Chapter 1 asks: Was Allan Quatermain Haggard's spokesman or was he merely an imaginative manifestation of the escapist hero-worship of the Victorian age? In …

Determination Of Volatile Organic Compounds In Coke Oven Emissions, Peter John Kirton Jan 1991

Determination Of Volatile Organic Compounds In Coke Oven Emissions, Peter John Kirton

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A new sampling device has been constructed for measuring occupational exposure to airborne organic compounds. The sampler enables the simultaneous determination of mono- and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Where these compounds are associated with dust particles, the sampler can collect both the inhalable and respirable portion of these particles. The sampler comprises three sections in series: a Teflon filter and two adsorbents, graphitised carbon and activated charcoal. The compounds trapped in each section are desorbed with small volumes of carbon disulphide and the hydrocarbons and other organics determined by gas chromatography, using either flame ionisation or mass spectrometric detection. The sampler …

The Application Of Expert Systems In Parenteral Nutrition, Michael Robinson Jan 1991

The Application Of Expert Systems In Parenteral Nutrition, Michael Robinson

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is a medical technique used to provide a patient's nutritional requirements via intravenous feeding. Critically ill patients must have adequate nutrition but must also have a stable physiology compensated for or treated by drugs. Several factors such as the complex nature of the TPN solution, the cost of the ingredients and the possible interaction of nutrient and drugs has led to the development of small expert system to assist the hospital medical staff in formulating the TPN constituents and assist the pharmacy staff in producing the final solution. This text will describe a small knowledge-based diagnostic …

Exploiting Distributed Memory Architecture To Support Object-Oriented Concepts, Kenneth Fakamuria Jan 1991

Exploiting Distributed Memory Architecture To Support Object-Oriented Concepts, Kenneth Fakamuria

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis describes an approach to harness the power of the transputer and Occam to support Object-oriented (00) concepts. It is a specific solution to the more general problem of exploiting distributed memory architectures to support the Object-oriented paradigm. The approach is a mixed one in which a design method based on emerging Object-oriented design methodologies is developed and used to capture 0 0 as well as parallel features of a typical problem domain. The design is then implemented in a non-object-oriented parallel language, Occam, on a network of transputers. Some testing and evaluation is done on the translation from …

An Investigation Into The Food Choice Of Older Adolescents Based On The Ajzen And Fishbein Theory Of Reasoned Action, With Outcomes Being Used As Guidelines For Nutritional Education, Barbara Eden

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study aimed to explain the food choices of first year university students by applying the Ajzen and Fishbein Model based on the Theory of Reasoned Action. Woodward et al (1991) satisfactorily used the Model to explain the food choices of adolescents in junior high school in Tasmania. Shepherd and Stockley (1987) also used this Model to successfully explain the consumption of high fat foods based on a person's beliefs and attitudes to these foods.

The Effect Of Feldenkrais Training On Perceptuomotor Ability, Irene Maya Romanova Jan 1991

The Effect Of Feldenkrais Training On Perceptuomotor Ability, Irene Maya Romanova

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The Feldenkrais Method of teaching and learning of awareness of movement has been receiving increasing interest from growing numbers of physiotherapists, medical practitioners, psychologists, athletes and performing artists and the general public. The approach is being used for the management and prevention of pain and movement dysfunction, and for the restoration of fluency and efficiency in posture, gait and as an approach in general or specialised skill acquisition. Self- reports and case studies provide some insights into the effects and influences of such an approach, however there is virtually no scientific evidence to support these interpretations. One of the suggested …

The Contribution Of Teacher Talk To The Production And Reproduction Of Gendered Subjectivity In Physical Education Lessons, Janice E. Wright Jan 1991

The Contribution Of Teacher Talk To The Production And Reproduction Of Gendered Subjectivity In Physical Education Lessons, Janice E. Wright

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

It is widely accepted that girls and women are less likely to participate in physical activity, have on average lower cardiovascular fitness and are more obese than boys and men. The response to this by the government and by those espousing a liberal femininist position has been to argue that such differences are the consequence of inequality of opportunity in regard to access to resources, skills and teaching time. This position takes for granted the value of sport and physical education as it is practised in western societies. It does not pose as problematic the contribution that such practices make …

The Effects Of Reproduction And Dispersal On The Population Structure Of A Freshwater Ostracod, Jennifer Ann Chaplin Jan 1991

The Effects Of Reproduction And Dispersal On The Population Structure Of A Freshwater Ostracod, Jennifer Ann Chaplin

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The need for studies of the roles of sexual and asexual reproduction in the life-history of species able to use both modes of reproduction is well recognised. This study uses a combination of approaches to investigate the life-history strategy of the freshwater ostracod Candonocypris novaezelandiae. This species was selected for study because it is common in a range of temporary and permanent water bodies, and includes populations with and apparently without males (and hence may have the capacity for sexual and asexual reproduction). Thus its life-history strategy is potentially directly comparable with the relatively well documented 'Daphnia model' …

The Pollination Biology And Breeding System Of Banksia Spinulosa, Susan Mary Carthew Jan 1991

The Pollination Biology And Breeding System Of Banksia Spinulosa, Susan Mary Carthew

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Mating systems are of fundamental importance in any consideration of the dynamics of plant populations, since patterns of mating determine the transmission of genes in a population, and thus have a major influence on the structure and dynamics of populations. Moreover, plant reproduction is influenced by events which occur throughout the mating process. Factors such as flowering patterns, pollinator effectiveness and behaviour, population structure, and incompatibility mechanisms are important determinants of mating patterns. Any quantitative and definitive assessment of plant mating systems therefore requires an integrated approach, which encompasses these factors. This study used such an approach to investigate the …

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Chiral Amines And Alcohols From Chiral Sulphur Reagents, Branko Dikic Jan 1991

Asymmetric Synthesis Of Chiral Amines And Alcohols From Chiral Sulphur Reagents, Branko Dikic

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis investigates the application of chiral sulfoxides and sulfoxmines to the asymetric synthesis of chiral alcohols, amines and isoquinoline alkaloids, the results are presented in five chapters.

In chapter 1 the addition of the anions of methyl phenyl and methyl p-tolysulfoxide to imines was shown to be highly diastcrcoselctive process under kinetically controlled conditions. This method was extended to the asymmetric synthesis of R(+) tetrahydropalmatine.

Chapter 2 is an extension of this method to methyl phenylsulfoximines. The relative stereochemistry of major adduct between lithiated t-butyldiphenylsilyl sulfoximine and benzylideneaniline was determined by x-ray crystalography.

In chapter 3 an attempt was …
