Analytical Studies On Australian Oil Shales, Jurgen Korth Jan 1987

Analytical Studies On Australian Oil Shales, Jurgen Korth

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Oil shale samples from the upper and lower units of the bipartite Duaringa oil shale deposit, Queensland Australia, have been analysed using a variety of fast characterisation procedures such as solvent extraction, pyrolysis-GC, isothermal pyrolysis and TGA. A CDS-150 pyroprobe was modified to simulate Fischer assay retort conditions on a micro scale basis and was used for the rapid assessment (pyrolysis-FID) of the hydrocarbon generating potential of these and other oil shale samples. Results obtained for Duaringa were extended to analytical studies on an extensive range of selected Australian and several overseas reference oil shales. An electronically-controlled tube-furnace retort was …

Studies In Weak Molecular Interactions, Ulrich Erich Senff Jan 1987

Studies In Weak Molecular Interactions, Ulrich Erich Senff

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this work, primary data are presented in order to characterise the precise numerical variation of all the important components of molecular interaction potential functions. Despite access to very limited computing facilities this work documents the current state of the art capacity of applied quantum theory to represent interactions between the two electron systems He, H2 and Li+.

Accurate ab-initio data is presented on the He-He, He-H2 and H2-H2 van der Waals interactions and the He-Li+ ion-induced dipole interaction.

Ab-initio studies necessitate the use of various approximations, due to the constraints of …

Some Aspects Of Analysis And Design Of Single-Frame Cascaded Induction Machines, B. S.P. Perera Jan 1987

Some Aspects Of Analysis And Design Of Single-Frame Cascaded Induction Machines, B. S.P. Perera

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Single-Frame Cascaded Induction Machine (SFCIM) is a brushless single-unit version of the well known cascade connected two-machine system. Applications of the SFCIM include, slip-power recovery for speed control; operation as a high power stepping motor; and generation of constant frequency in both aircraft and wind energy applications.

A new steady-state circuit theory for the SFCIM having a 'multicircuit single-layer bar rotor winding' is described. Assumptions made in the development of the new model are no different to those made in the analysis previously existing and yet the new theoretical model is relatively simple in comparison. It is based on the …

Radiative Transfer In Australian Sub-Tropical Rainforest Stands, B. Harper Jan 1987

Radiative Transfer In Australian Sub-Tropical Rainforest Stands, B. Harper

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The work described in this thesis involved development of a predictive tool for characterizing the light climate within a plant stand canopy under clear sky conditions. Characterization of the light climate within plant canopies has been the focus of a considerable number of measuring and modelling programs. Measurement programs have tended to involve the use of large numbers of sensors with enormous amounts of data collected over lengths of time. Many of these programs have not taken account of the spectral characteristics of the incident radiation, the optical properties of the radiated plant elements or the mechanism of the photosynthetic …

The Establishment Of The Anglo-Australian Telescope: An Historical Case Study In Australian Science Policy, Roger Trevor Garland Jan 1987

The Establishment Of The Anglo-Australian Telescope: An Historical Case Study In Australian Science Policy, Roger Trevor Garland

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis examines the establishment of the Anglo-Australian Telescope as a case study in Australian science policy. An historical overview of Australian astronomy is developed, followed by an historical account of the telescope project. The latter forms the major part of the work. Attention is paid to the arguments put forward by the astronomical community to justify funding. The role of the Australian Academy of Science as an elite science institution in the decision making process is examined. Also considered is the impact in the 1960s of emerging government science policy machinery. The entrenchment of a high civilisation principle used …

A Long-Term Study Of Fire-Induced Changes In A Hawkesbury Sandstone Plant Community, Roslyn Mary Muston Jan 1987

A Long-Term Study Of Fire-Induced Changes In A Hawkesbury Sandstone Plant Community, Roslyn Mary Muston

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study investigated the changes in the species composition and species distribution within a Hawkesbury sandstone plant community after disturbance by a fire. It aimed to compare the post-fire recovery process observed in this plant community with the models of succession which are most frequently employed to describe recovery after recurrent disturbance. A long-term, diachronic study, incorporating detailed monitoring of the plant community, was chosen in an attempt to overcome the problems of interpretation of spatial variation which are inherent in any synchronic approach to the study of succession. The species composition of a Hawkesbury Sandstone plant community was assessed …

Computer Graphics In Chemical Education, Roslyn Joy Atkins Jan 1987

Computer Graphics In Chemical Education, Roslyn Joy Atkins

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The UCSD Pascal programming language has been employed to develop three software packages suitable for senior high school and introductory university chemistry. All programs utilise microcomputer graphics and animation to illustrate specific chemical concepts. The packages, developed on the Apple II microcomputer, have been favourably evaluated in the chemistry classroom. An important feature of the software is the presentation of a highly interactive environment in which the user can control the simulation of a variety of chemical reactions. Chemical concepts, often found difficult by students, are clearly displayed and explained through high quality graphics and animation. Most significantly, microcomputer animation …

Gold And Silver Mineralization In Sulphide Vein Deposits Of The Cikotok Area, West Java, Indonesia, R. Simpwee Soeharto Jan 1987

Gold And Silver Mineralization In Sulphide Vein Deposits Of The Cikotok Area, West Java, Indonesia, R. Simpwee Soeharto

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The Cikotok mineralization geologically and tectonically lies within the Tertiary volcano-magmatic belt of Java Island, and was affected by movement of the Tertiary, north-dipping Indian Oceanic plate which was subducted beneath the island arc. The gold-silver mineralization in the area is accompanied by base metal sulphides, and is hosted by a sequence of altered calc-alkaline volcanic rocks of the Oligo-Miocene Old Andesite Formation (comprising mostly andesites). The dominant forms of alteration to the host rocks include silicification, propylitization, carbonatization, sericitization, chloritization and argilitization.

Gasification Kinetics Of Single Charcoal Particles In Carbon Dioxide Atmosphere, Ahmad Fuad Tanjung Jan 1987

Gasification Kinetics Of Single Charcoal Particles In Carbon Dioxide Atmosphere, Ahmad Fuad Tanjung

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In a charcoal blast furnace about 80% of the furnace volume is occupied by charcoal and the rest by the ferrous material. The gasification and properties of the charcoal dictate almost exclusively the efficiency of this particular ironmaking process and any changes in the charcoal strength, density and reactivity could profoundly change the present level of productivity in a charcoal blast furnace.

Energy Metabolism And Thyroid Function Of Antechninus Stuartii, Kerry William Withers Jan 1987

Energy Metabolism And Thyroid Function Of Antechninus Stuartii, Kerry William Withers

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Australian marsupials have been distinct from eutherlans for about 130 million years (McKenna, 1969). Adaptive radiation during this time has resulted In considerable variety In ecological niche and anatomical features of marsupials. The relationship of the urinary and genital tracts to each other and the relatively undeveloped state of young, (born after a short gestation period) are among the major features distinguishing marsupials from eutherlans (Tyndale-Blscoe, 1973).

Flowering Phenologies And Reproductive Success Of Co-Occurring Banksia Species, Brian James Copland Jan 1987

Flowering Phenologies And Reproductive Success Of Co-Occurring Banksia Species, Brian James Copland

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

There has been an expansion of interest, in recent years, in the nature of plant/ pollinator interactions, especially with respect to competition. Many studies lack generality, however, for two reasons:- (i) they were completed without knowledge of precise flowering phenologies and (ii) they were short-term studies, usually completed within one flowering season. When dealing with perennials, subject ti» temporal variation in factors that influence their reproductive success, studies should be carried out over a number of flowering seasons.

Symbolic Politics In The High Technology Debate In Australia, Richard Andrew Joseph Jan 1987

Symbolic Politics In The High Technology Debate In Australia, Richard Andrew Joseph

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

High technology has become prominent in political debate in Australia since the early 1980s. It has been portrayed in debate as being of national significance and vital to the future well-being of the Australian economy. The aim of this study is to examine the nature of high technology through politics by analysing the contemporary high technology debate in Australia. The framework adopted for the analysis is that of symbolic politics.

Symbolic politics highlights the importance of both instrumental political activity and expressive political activity. The former deals with what is normally thought of as political activity such as bargaining for funds …

The Development Of Physical Models For The Prediction Of The Behaviour Of Underground Mining Structures, Frank Edwin Jaggar Jan 1987

The Development Of Physical Models For The Prediction Of The Behaviour Of Underground Mining Structures, Frank Edwin Jaggar

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis describes the development of physical models specifically to predict the behaviour of strata and artificial supports in the vicinity of underground mining openings. The application of the technique was initially designed for coal mining but was extended to include metalliferous mining structures.

The factors which caused the observable effects underground were either unknown or improperly understood. Physical models were considered, and later proved, to be capable of displaying the breaking behaviour of the strata, leading to methods to control it or avoid problems so that mining could take place efficiently, safely and economically.

At the time of commencement …

More Than The Portrait: The Intangible With The Immediately Visible As A Painter Interprets His Subjects On A Surface, Peter Leonard Shepherd Jan 1987

More Than The Portrait: The Intangible With The Immediately Visible As A Painter Interprets His Subjects On A Surface, Peter Leonard Shepherd

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This documentation gives support to the work displayed in the two exhibitions of paintings and drawings, which form the basis of the submission for the Degree.

Included in the document is a full photographic record of the exhibitions, with an analysis of each work.

The painting projects were begun in the second half of 1983, and though the two subject sources might appear at first glance to be some distance apart, it became clear, during the execution of the works, that substantial relationships existed between the thematic and formal elements of the two series.

It is certain that a period …

Physiological And Biochemical Studies On Dunaliella, Arun Goyal Jan 1987

Physiological And Biochemical Studies On Dunaliella, Arun Goyal

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The growth characteristics of the parent strain and salt-sensitive HL 25/8 mutant of Dunaliella tertiolecta have shown that the mutant is sensitive to salt concentrations in a range (0.17 to 1.0 M NaCl) in which the parent strain is able to grow. The mutant grew in 0.17 M NaCl at about half the rate of the parent strain. The optimum growth temperature of the parent strain increased with salinity but did not do so in the mutant, and gassing of the culture with 5 % mixture of C02 in air extended the duration of exponential growth rate of both …

Physicochemical Factors Affecting Glycerol Production In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Keshav Kumar Singh Jan 1987

Physicochemical Factors Affecting Glycerol Production In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Keshav Kumar Singh

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Both Saccharomyces cerevisiae and S. rouxii respond to a water stress by accumulating the compatible solute glycerol yet only the latter is xerotolerant. When exponentially growing yeasts were transferred from a normal high water activity growth medium (awO.997) to synthetic medium containing 8% NaCI (low water activity growth medium aw 0.955) the pattern of glycerol accumulation during the first eight hours of the adaptation was markedly different in the two species. S. rouxii began to accumulate glycerol immediately after transfer whereas glycerol accumulation by S. cerevisiae was both retarded and greatly diminished in magnitude. S. cerevisiae did not recommence growth …

Parliament And The British Army: The Structure Of Financial Control, 1846-1899, Warwick N. Funnell

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Al though ultimately victorious in the Crimean War ( 1854-56), the performance of the British Army had been so disappointing that the government at the time was compelled to investigate the causes of military dalliance. Apart from expected and repeated references to embarrassments of strategy, tactics and command, concern was expressed by the investigating committees over deficiencies in military financial and supply management. At the time, and in concert with these findings, the British Army was insistent that its performance in the field was deleteriously affected both by excessive economy in military spending and by the means with which Parliament …

Capital Expenditure Budgeting & Organisational Change, Mary M. Greenwell Jan 1987

Capital Expenditure Budgeting & Organisational Change, Mary M. Greenwell

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

It was argued in a previous study (Greenwell 1983a and 1983b) that capital expenditure budgeting should be studied within its environmental contexts. In this study, capital expenditure budgeting was studied in the specific setting of the Australian footwear manufacturing industry. This industry was chosen because its environment, which included one of the highest levels of protection in Australia, underwent a significant but orderly change in 1982. This current study addressed the nature of protection and outlined its history in the industry. This was followed by an argument regarding the creation of a particular corporate culture: learned helplessness. A hypothesis, that …

A Comparative Study Of The Hydrocarbon Generation Potential Of Korean And Australian Tertiary/Cretaceous Sedimentary Basins, Hong-Yul Kim

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The southern and southeastern Korean Continental Shelf basins and the Gippsland Basin in southeastern Australia both contain thick Tertiary sedimentary sequences. The Gippsland Basin has more than 3.7 billion barrels of recoverable oil whereas commercial reservoirs remain to be discovered in the Korean basins. The tectonic settings, depositional environments, burial and thermal histories of both the Korean basins and Gippsland Basin, are in many ways, broadly similar. Each area has a non-marine, coal-bearing sequence overlain by a thick marine sequence. In both areas the best source rocks are associated with the thick non-marine sequences.

The Log Of The White Wog: A Diary Of Voices, Jack Ho Jan 1987

The Log Of The White Wog: A Diary Of Voices, Jack Ho

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The diaries of this 'roadwork' are as telling in their gaps as in their continuities - sometimes months of silence follow weeks of words. As with all diarists, the basic subject-matter is the self - and so it is with my reconstituted version of Jack's logs. The story's structure is simply his trajectory through the landscape; its theme, momentum. The work introduces itself as 'a diary of voices' (some readers may also think it a diary of vices): Jack sometimes tells a story from the perspective of his travelling partner. Crane. It is a device which reminds us that even …

Construing Religious Experience, Carol Preston Jan 1987

Construing Religious Experience, Carol Preston

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A model for exploring religious experience in the everyday lives of people has been proposed, using personal construct theory (Kelly, 1955) as a theoretical base and source of methodology. One hundred and sixty three people participated in the exploration. They were interviewed about their religious background and current involvement in religious activities. The content and organisation of their constructs, in relation to the religious and secular aspects of their lives, were elicited using Repertory Grid and Implication Grid methods (Fransella & Bannister, 1977). Affective and interpersonal experience were assessed from content analyses of the participants' verbalisations about their lives. Religious …
