Influences Of Temperature And Grain Size On The Material Deformability In Microforming Process, Zhengyi Jiang, Jingwei Zhao, Haina Lu, Dongbin Wei, Kenichi Manabe, Xianming Zhao, Xiaoming Zhang, Di Wu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper investigated the influences of temperature and grain size on the deformability of pure copper in micro compression process. Based on the dislocation theory, a constitutive model was proposed taking into account the influences of forming temperature, Hall-Petch relationship and surface layer model. Vacuum heat treatment was employed to obtain various grain sizes of cylindrical workpieces, and then laser heating method was applied to heat workpieces during microforming process. Finite element (FE) simulation was also performed, with simulated values agreed well with the experimental results in terms of metal flow stress. Both the FE simulated and experimental results indicate …

Analysis Of Laminated Crack Defect In The Upsetting Process Of Heavy Disk-Shaped Forgings, Minting Wang, Dongying Li, Fan Wang, Xinliang Zang, Xuetong Li, Hong Xiao, Fengshan Du, F C. Zhang, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Using nonlinear finite element method, a thermo-mechanical coupled simulation model for the formation mechanism of the laminated crack defect has been established in the upsetting of heavy disk-shaped forgings. Through numerical simulation, the distributions of stress, equivalent strain and strain rate were analysed. Meanwhile the distribution diagram of stress state evolution was obtained, and the uncoordinated deformation, under tri-lateral compression, is determined as the main reason leading to laminated crack defect. To reveal the characteristics of the uncoordinated deformation, the variations of each variable and its gradient in numerical simulation were presented, and a combined prediction model of laminated crack …

Mechanical Recoverability And Damage Process Of Ionic-Covalent Paam-Alginate Hybrid Hydrogels, Hai Xin, Hugh Ralph Brown, Sina Naficy, Geoffrey M. Spinks

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Hydrogels consisting of interpenetrating networks of ionically and covalently crosslinked polymers showed high toughness and mechanical recoverability as a result of the dissociation and re-formation of ionic crosslinks. The present investigation aimed to provide a quantitative study on the mechanical recoverability and damage process of an example hybrid gel of calcium crosslinked alginate and covalently crosslinked polyacrylamide. Three series of load/unload tests were performed sequentially with the mechanical properties of the gel fully retrieved between the 2nd and 3rd load/unload series while only the partial recovery of mechanical properties was evident from the 1st to 2nd series. The load/unload curves …

Bottom-Up Microfabrication Process For Individually Controlled Conjugated Polymer Actuators, Alexandre Khaldi, Ali Maziz, Gursel Alici, Geoffrey M. Spinks, Edwin W. Jager

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Handling of soft and fragile sub-millimeter sized samples such as cells and tissues requires new tools that allow delicate manipulation. Conducting polymer actuators show unique characteristics suitable to driving such manipulators, however despite their potential, the current fabrication method of the trilayer structures does not allow constructing advanced micromanipulators operating in air using this technology. Here we show a novel bottom-up microfabrication process for conjugated polymer trilayer actuators using various solid polymer electrolytes. In addition, the process design integrates contact pads, which has been an issue for small scale conducting polymer actuators. The microfabrication process starts with a patterned layer …

Biosolids Reduction By The Oxic-Settling-Anoxic Process: Impact Of Sludge Interchange Rate, Galilee U. Semblante, Faisal I. Hai, Heriberto A. Bustamante, Nelly Guevara, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem Jan 2016

Biosolids Reduction By The Oxic-Settling-Anoxic Process: Impact Of Sludge Interchange Rate, Galilee U. Semblante, Faisal I. Hai, Heriberto A. Bustamante, Nelly Guevara, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The impact of sludge interchange rate (SIR) on sludge reduction by oxic-settling-anoxic (OSA) process was investigated. The sludge yield of an OSA system (a sequencing batch reactor, SBR, integrated with external anoxic reactors) was compared to that of a control (an SBR attached to a single-pass aerobic digester). SIR (%) is the percentage by volume of sludge returned from the external reactor into the main bioreactor of the OSA, and was varied from 0-22%. OSA achieved greater sludge reduction when fed with unsettled sewage (sCOD=113 mg/L) rather than settled sewage (sCOD=60 mg/L). The SIR of 11% resulted in the highest …

Structure And Magnetic Properties Of Bi5ti3feo15 Ceramics Prepared By Sintering, Mechanical Activation And Edamm Process. A Comparative Study, E Jartych, T Pikula, M Mazurek, W Franus, A Lisinska-Czekaj, D Czekaj, D Oleszak, Z Surowiec, Andrzej Aksenczuk, Andrzej Calka

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Three different methods were used to obtain Bi5Ti3FeO15 ceramics, i.e. solid-state sintering, mechanical activation (MA) with subsequent thermal treatment, and electrical discharge assisted mechanical milling (EDAMM). The structure and magnetic properties of produced Bi5Ti3FeO15 samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The purest Bi5Ti3FeO15 ceramics was obtained by standard solid-state sintering method. Mechanical milling methods are attractive because the Bi5Ti3FeO15 compound may be formed at lower temperature or without subsequent thermal treatment. In the case of EDAMM process also the time of processing is significantly shorter in comparison with solid-state sintering method. As revealed by Mössbauer spectroscopy, at …

A New Micro Scale Fe Model Of Crystalline Materials In Micro Forming Process, Liang Luo, Haibo Xie, Dongbin Wei, Xiaogang Wang, Cunlong Zhou, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Micro forming of metals has drawn global attention due to the increasing requirement of micro metal products. However, the size effects become significant in micro forming processes and affect the application of finite element (FE) simulation of micro forming processes. Dividing samples into small areas according to their microstructures and assigning individual properties to each small area are a possible access to micro forming simulation considering material size effects. In this study, a new model that includes both grains and their boundaries was developed based on the observed microstructures of samples. The divided subareas in the model have exact shapes …

Etching Process Related Changes And Effects On Solid-Core Single-Mode Polymer Optical Fiber Grating, Kishore Bhowmik, Gang-Ding Peng, Yanhua Luo, Eliathamby Ambikairajah, Vedran Lovric, William R. Walsh, Ginu Rajan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Etching process related material and mechanical changes on solid-core single-mode polymer optical fiber (POF) and their influence on the characteristic properties of polymer fiber Bragg gratings (PFBGs) are studied. A poly(methyl methacrylate)-based POF is etched to different diameters, and it is experimentally demonstrated that etching can lead to a change in the Young's modulus of the fiber. It is found that etching process induced material changes of the polymer fiber can enhance the reflectivity and inherent sensitivity of PFBGs. It is demonstrated that gratings based on etched POF exhibit higher reflectivity with a shorter exposure time compared with unetched ones. …

Effects Of Sludge Retention Time On Oxic-Settling-Anoxic Process Performance: Biosolids Reduction And Dewatering Properties, Galilee U. Semblante, Faisal I. Hai, Heriberto A. Bustamante, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem Jan 2016

Effects Of Sludge Retention Time On Oxic-Settling-Anoxic Process Performance: Biosolids Reduction And Dewatering Properties, Galilee U. Semblante, Faisal I. Hai, Heriberto A. Bustamante, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this study, the effect of sludge retention time (SRT) on oxic-settling-anoxic (OSA) process was determined using a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) attached to external aerobic/anoxic reactors. The SRT of the external reactors was varied from 10 to 40 d. Increasing SRT from 10 to 20 d enhanced volatile solids destruction in the external anoxic reactor as evidenced by the release of nutrients, however, increasing the SRT to 40 d did not enhance volatile solids destruction further. Relatively short SRT (10–20 d) favoured the conversion of destroyed solids into inert products. The application of an intermediate SRT (20 d) of …

Micro Sheet Hydroforming Process Of Ultra-Thin Pure Titanium Foil, Hideki Sato, Kenichi Manabe, Dongbin Wei, Zhengyi Jiang, Daiki Kondo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A micro hydromechanical deep drawing is carried out using the pure titanium and the effect of fluid pressure on formability of pure titanium is investigated. The experiments are performed using the two kinds of pure titanium foils (TR270C-H and TR270C-O) and stainless steel foil (SUS304-H) with 50 thickness and the cylindrical and conical punches. As a result, it is found that the peeling off the oxide film of pure titanium can be reduced by applying the fluid pressure because the friction force and contact pressure between the blank and die decreases. However, the formability is lower for pure titanium than …

Effect Of Pre-Quenching Process On Microstructure And Mechanical Properties In A Nb-Microalloyed Low Carbon Q-P Steel, Jun Zhang, Hua Ding, Jingwei Zhao

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A refined microstructure consisting of martensite and retained austenite at room temperature has been produced in a Nb-microalloyed low carbon Si-Mn steel by a novel heat-treatment, pre-quenching prior to quenching and partitioning processes (Q&Q-P). The results showed that compared with the conventional quenching and partitioning steel the mechanical properties of steel obtained by the novel treatment have been significantly improved, with a good combination of ultimate tensile strength (1000MPa) and total elongation (above 30%). Meanwhile, the volume fraction of retained austenite has been increased. It was found that the improvement of mechanical properties was mainly attributed to the enhanced TRIP …

Analytical Solutions For Filtration Process Based On The Constriction Size Concept, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Vo Trong Nguyen, Ashok Raut

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, an analytical model was proposed to describe the filtration process applicable to a base soil-filter system. The Navier-Stokes equation for porous media was used to capture the hydrodynamic behavior, while numerically a new algorithm has been proposed to solve the Navier-Stokes equation in non-linear form. The various mixtures of base particles eroded and water flow within the system was computed using the work-energy principle incorporating the constriction size of the filter. The model can assess the filtration process through the flow rate, and the accumulation and erosion of base soil within the filter. By discretising the base …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study decsribesa potential offluid pressure in micro hydromechanical deep drawingto achieve high formability. The FE simulation is carried out using the stainless steel foil with 50μm thickness. The friction holding effect can be obtained by applying the fluid pressure and it becomes high at high D p/t in MHDD. By applying the counter and radial pressure in MHDD, the desired lubrication condition can be obtained and the friction force can be reduced. By the friction holding effect and lubrication effect in MHDD, the micro cups can be successful fabricated in MHDD. Consequently, it is clarify that the fluid pressure …

Toward Resource Recovery From Wastewater: Phosphorus Extraction From Digested Sludge Using Hybrid Forward Osmosis - Membrane Distillation Process, Ming Xie, Long D. Nghiem, William E. Price, Menachem Elimelech

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We demonstrate the simultaneous extraction of phosphorus and clean water from digested sludge centrate using a forward osmosis (FO)−membrane distillation (MD) hybrid process. In this FO−MD hybrid process, FO concentrates orthophosphate and ammonium for subsequent phosphorus recovery in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4·6H2O), while MD is used to recover the draw solution and extract clean water from the digested sludge centrate. A decline in water flux was observed during the FO process, but fouling was largely reversible after a brief, simple membrane flushing using deionized water. The FO process also provides an effective pretreatment capacity to the subsequent MD process, …

A Study Of Plastic Deformation Behavior During High Pressure Torsion Process By Crystal Plasticity Finite Element Simulation, Peitang Wei, Cheng Lu, A K. Tieu, Guanyu Deng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

High pressure torsion (HPT) is an efficient technique of producing ultrafine grained materials with exceptional small grain size. In this study, a crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) model has been developed to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of pure aluminum single crystal during the HPT process. The simulation results show that, the distribution and evolution of the macroscopic plastic strain and the accumulative shear strain are similar. The value increases with the increase of the distance from the center as well as the number of revolution. The simulation is capable of reflecting the anisotropic characteristics of HPT deformation, a …

Occurrence Of Surface Defects On Strips During Hot Rolling Process By Fem, Hai-Liang Yu, Kiet Tieu, Cheng Lu, Guan-Yu Deng, Xiang-Hua Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

During a hot rolling process, surface defects on strips can severely affect the quality of the rolled product, particularly for two conditions: (1) there are initial defects on continuous casting slabs that propagate and/or are inherited from those on the surface of rolled steels from upstream rolling processes; and (2) there are no initial defects on continuous casting slabs, and they consequently appear on the surface of rolled steels due to improper rolling technologies. In this paper, the authors present a new 3D finite element model coupled with constrained node failure to understand better the initiation and growth of surface …

A Biological Process Subject To Noncompetitive Substrate Inhibition In A Generalized Flow Reactor, M I. Nelson, T Nicholls, N Hamzah

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We analyse the steady-state operation of a continuous flow bioreactor in which the biochemical reaction is governed by noncompetitive substrate inhibition (Andrews kinetics). A generalized reactor model is used in which the well-stirred bioreactor and the idealized membrane bioreactor are special cases. As generic properties of systems subject to substrate inhibition have been obtained by other authors, we discuss reaction engineering features specific to Andrews kinetics.

Removal Of Trace Organic Contaminants By The Forward Osmosis Process, Abdulhakeem Alturki, James Mcdonald, Stuart Khan, William Price, Long Nghiem, Menachem Prof Menachem Elimelech

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The rejection of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) by an osmotically driven membrane filtration process was investigated. A set of 40 compounds representing major groups of TrOCs of concern was selected for this study. The rejection of the TrOCs by a commercial cellulose acetate asymmetric forward osmosis membrane, as well as a ''tight'' commercial thin-film composite nanofiltration (NF) membrane, was systematically investigated and compared under three different operating modes: forward osmosis (FO), pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) and reverse osmosis (RO). Results revealed that the cellulose acetate membrane had considerably smaller water and salt permeabilities as well as less negative surface charge …

Process Design Strategies For Producing Heavy Section Steel With Improved Quality, Jingwei Zhao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Chong Soo Lee

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Uniformity of microstructure and mechanical properties is required for the heavy section steel. In the present work, a heavy section wind tower flange was manufactured by controlled ring-rolling. Post-rolling heat treatment was employed to optimize the microstructure and mechanical properties. The chemical composition, microstructure and mechanical properties in different zones of the flange were investigated. The results showed that the chemical composition and microstructure were uniformly distributed in the flange. The tensile strength showed similar values in different sampling locations. The strain and impact energies of specimens prepared along the longitudinal direction were higher than that prepared along both the …

Finite Element Analysis Of Roll Bit Behaviors In Cold Foil Rolling Process, Liang Hao, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Xiawei Cheng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

To investigate roll bite behaviors in cold foil rolling process, a 2D elasto-plastic finite model is established using FEM software ABAQUS. Contact pressure distribution and roll contour in roll bite are also presented, which demonstrate that foil rolling process is different from conventional strip rolling process. The contact area is composed of entry elastic zone, entry plastic zone, an extensive neutral zone, exit plastic zone and exit elastic zone. It conforms to the results of Fleck foil rolling theory. Elastic deformation and work hardening of foil in roll bite are taken into account. The effect of rolling parameters, such as …

Finite Element Modelling Of Surface Roughness Transfer And Oxide Scale Micro Deformation In Metal Manufacturing Process, Zhengyi Jiang, Dongbin Wei, Hejie Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In the paper, the micro deformation of oxide scale in hot strip rolling has been investigated with considering the friction effect. The finite element simulation of the micro deformation of oxide scale has been successfully conducted, and the calculated surface roughness is compared with the measured value, which shows a good agreement. A crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) model was also successfully developed to analyse the surface roughness transfer during metal manufacturing. The simulation results show a good agreement with the experimental results in the flattening of surface asperity, and the surface roughness decreases significantly with an increase of …

Sludge Formation In The Activated Sludge Process: Mathematical Analysis, Asma O. M Alharbi, Mark I. Nelson, Annette L. Worthy, Harvinder S. Sidhu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

One drawback associated with the activated sludge process is the production of 'sludge'. The expense for treating excess sludge can account for 50-60% of the running costs of a plant. Traditional methods for disposing of excess sludge, which include incineration, the use of landfill sites and dumping at sea are becoming increasingly regulated worldwide due to concerns about the presence of potentially toxic elements in it. Furthermore, a combination of the limited amount of land available for landfill, particularly in urban areas, with stringent legislation has seen the economic costs of using landfill sites increasing sharply. Thus there is a …

A Forward Osmosis-Membrane Distillation Hybrid Process For Direct Sewer Mining: System Performance And Limitations, Ming Xie, Long D. Nghiem, William E. Price, Menachem Elimelech

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study demonstrates the robustness and treatment capacity of a forward osmosis (FO)-membrane distillation (MD) hybrid system for small-scale decentralized sewer mining. A stable water flux was realized using a laboratory-scale FO-MD hybrid system operating continuously with raw sewage as the feed at water recovery up to 80%. The hybrid system also showed an excellent capacity for the removal of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs), with removal rates ranging from 91 to 98%. The results suggest that TrOC transport through the FO membrane is governed by "solute-membrane" interaction, whereas that through the MD membrane is strongly correlated to TrOC volatility. Concentrations …

Automatic Bdi Plan Recognition From Process Execution Logs And Effect Logs, Hongyun Xu, Bastin Tony Roy Savarimuthu, Aditya Ghose, Evan Morrison, Qiying Cao, Youqun Shi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Agent applications are often viewed as unduly expensive to develop and maintain in commercial contexts. Organizations often settle for less sophisticated and more traditional software in place of agent technology because of (often misplaced) fears about the development and maintenance costs of agent technology, and the often mistaken perception that traditional software offers better returns on investment. This paper aims to redress this by developing a plan recognition framework for agent program learning, where behavior logs of legacy applications (or even manually executed processes) are mined to extract a 'draft' version of agent code that could eventually replace these applications …
