A Markov Model For Baseball With Applications, Daniel Joseph Ursin
A Markov Model For Baseball With Applications, Daniel Joseph Ursin
Theses and Dissertations
In this work we confirm a Markov chain model of baseball for 2013 Major League Baseball batting data. We describe the transition matrices for individual player data and their use in generating single and nine-inning run distributions for a given lineup. The run distribution is used to calculate the expected number of runs produced by a lineup over nine innings. We discuss batting order optimization heuristics to avoid computation of distributions for the 9! = 362, 880 distinct lineups for 9 players. Finally, we describe an implementation of the algorithms and review their performance against actual game data.
Biomechanical Joint Demands And Functional Outcomes During Manual Wheelchair Use In Pediatric Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Christine M. Aurit
Biomechanical Joint Demands And Functional Outcomes During Manual Wheelchair Use In Pediatric Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Christine M. Aurit
Theses and Dissertations
The biomechanical demands of the upper extremities (UEs) during pediatric manual wheelchair (MWC) use have not been fully explored. Children who use MWCs for mobility engage in a range of functional activities that may place large biomechanical demands on the UEs leading to a high risk on overuse injuries. This study aims to analyze the kinematics and kinetics of pediatric manual wheelchair use during propulsion, starting, stopping and weight relief tasks. Fourteen pediatric patients with spinal cord injury were recruited and data were collected using a 14-camera Vicon MX motion analysis system (Oxford Metric Group, Oxford, UK) and a SmartWheel …

Freedom of expression as a right has been protected by many nations' Constitutions and human right organizations. Freedom of expression has a long history in both the Western and Islamic worlds. Each viewed, defined, and analyzed the term differently based on their values and principles. Unsurprisingly, the Western and Islamic worlds do not completely …
An Optogenetic Brain-Machine Interface For Spatiotemporal Neuromodulation, Ryan Andrew Baumgartner
An Optogenetic Brain-Machine Interface For Spatiotemporal Neuromodulation, Ryan Andrew Baumgartner
Theses and Dissertations
Direct neural stimulation has recently become a standard therapy for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's Disease, Essential Tremors, and Dystonia. Currently, deep brain electro-stimulation and neuro-pharmaceutical treatments are the dominant therapeutic options available to the public. As our understanding of brain function and neurological diseases improves, we are able to develop more advanced neuromodulation techniques. These methods could become viable treatment solutions for treating brain dysfunction. Optogenetics, first introduced by a research team led by Karl Deisseroth at Stanford University, has proved to be a versatile technique with remarkable potential to be used in treatments for brain disorders, dysfunction, and …
Improving Mri Surface Coil Decoupling To Reduce B1 Distortion, Christian K. Larson
Improving Mri Surface Coil Decoupling To Reduce B1 Distortion, Christian K. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
As clinical MRI systems continue to advance, larger focus is being given to image
uniformity. Good image uniformity begins with generating uniform magnetic fields, which
are easily distorted by induced currents on receive-only surface coils. It has become an
industry standard to combat these induced currents by placing RF blocking networks on
surface coils. This paper explores the effect of blocking network impedance of phased array surface coils on B1 distortion. It has been found and verified, that traditional approaches for blocking network design in complex phased arrays can leave undesirable B1 distortions at 3 Tesla. The traditional approach of …

Phosphorus Recycling By Profunda Quagga Mussels In Lake Michigan, Caroline Mosley
Phosphorus Recycling By Profunda Quagga Mussels In Lake Michigan, Caroline Mosley
Theses and Dissertations
Quagga mussels (Dreissena rostiformis bugensis) act as ecosystem engineers in the southern basin of Lake Michigan, altering physical habitats and biogeochemical processes. Adapted to cold and oligotrophic conditions, profunda quagga mussels thrive on the soft substrate of deeper depths. At a 55 m site (10,000 mussels m-2) offshore from Milwaukee, WI, profunda mussel biomass (g m-2) was 1/3 of biomass (g m-2) measured at a 10 m comparison site (5,000 mussels m-2). Higher densities but less biomass is due to profunda mussels having less tissue for a given length and the population per m2 comprising of mostly small mussels ( …

Impact Of Gestational Exposure To 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin On T Lymphocyte Development, Lori S. Ahrenhoerster
Impact Of Gestational Exposure To 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-P-Dioxin On T Lymphocyte Development, Lori S. Ahrenhoerster
Theses and Dissertations
2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant and the best characterized agonist of the arylhydrocarbon receptor (AHR), a transcription factor crucial to the detoxification of numerous xenobiotics. Studies in animals show that TCDD is immunosuppressive in adult exposures, and epidemiological studies have found an association between TCDD exposure and hematologic cancers. Additionally, developmental exposure to TCDD has been shown to increase the likelihood of autoimmunity and to impair immune response to later-life infections. The cells of the immune system are all descended from multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that originate in the fetus. This multipotency, defined as the ability to …
Creating Neighborhood In Postwar Buffalo, New York: Transformations Of The West Side, 1950-1980, Caitlin Boyle Moriarty
Creating Neighborhood In Postwar Buffalo, New York: Transformations Of The West Side, 1950-1980, Caitlin Boyle Moriarty
Theses and Dissertations
This project reconsiders post-World War II neighborhood change by examining how various groups in Buffalo, New York conceptualized, experienced and produced the West Side as a cultural and economic artifact between 1950 and 1980. This approach offers an alternative to conceptualizing neighborhoods as bounded, natural entities and it encourages narratives that complicate the prevailing metaphor of decline in rust belt cities by illuminating other components of postwar neighborhood change than population loss and economic disinvestment. This project uses neighborhood retail as a lens through which to examine how city planners, the West Side Business Men's Club, the Federation of Italian …

"Tales" Of Text And Culture: Tropes Of Imperialism, Women's Roles, Technologies Of Representation, And Collaborative Meaning-Making In Rita Golden Gelman's Tales Of A Female Nomad, Female Nomad And Friends, And Personal Website, Michelle Lynne Van Wert Kosalka
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines contemporary travel writing specifically created for a popular reading culture, Rita Golden Gelman's Tales of a Female Nomad, Female Nomad and Friends, and personal website. The project is concerned with how culture is continuously represented and shaped through the dialogic interaction between writer and reader, and the subsequent liminal spaces which emerge in moments of meaning-making. Chapter 1 is a close reading of how Gelman's works reinforce and, in some cases, resist, tropes of imperialism. Chapter 2 examines patriarchal gender roles in Gelman's works and the ways in which recent advances in feminist psychiatry and psychology can …
On The Nonlinear Tribological Jerk Dynamics At Sliding Interfaces, Divyeshkumar Patel
On The Nonlinear Tribological Jerk Dynamics At Sliding Interfaces, Divyeshkumar Patel
Theses and Dissertations
As the world desires the next industrial revolution, the potential threats that will undermine energy efficient innovations include detrimental frictional effects that exacerbate wear, hasten equipment breakdowns, and worsen heat dissipation. Capturing the inherently nonlinear manifestations of friction fundamentally has been difficult. A fundamental modeling scheme elucidating friction will bolster novel technologies synthesizing wear resistant materials and lubricants needed for sustainable energy efficiency.
Frictional dissipation at dynamical sliding interfaces has been studied for generations. Interfacial sliding frictional effects are prevalent in natural and artificial phenomena such as earthquake, hip and knee joints, and the moving parts of energy-producing and energy-consuming …

Teaching Discriminated Social Approaches To Individuals With Angelman Syndrome, Caitlin Shea Fichtner
Theses and Dissertations
Angelman syndrome is a neuro-genetic disorder characterized by intellectual and developmental disability. Common behavioral characteristics of this disorder include a heightened interest in social interactions and frequent bids to initiate interaction. These bids can be problematic, for instance when a child attempts to hug strangers in public places. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate a discrimination training program to teach appropriate from inappropriate times to initiate a social interaction with three males diagnosed with Angelman Syndrome whose caregivers reported frequent hugging or hand holding as a problem. During a baseline, we alternated periods in which attention was …
Api Usage Verification Through Dataflow Analysis, Kenneth Baptiste Tapsoba
Api Usage Verification Through Dataflow Analysis, Kenneth Baptiste Tapsoba
Theses and Dissertations
Using APIs in a program is often difficult because of the incomplete documentation and the shortage of available examples. To cope with that, we have seen the increase of API checking tools that provide efficient suggestions for API usage. However, most of those checking tools use a pattern-based analysis to determine errors such as misuse of API calls. In this thesis, we introduce a different analysis technique that relies on explicit API state transitions for the analysis of the program. We adopt a static dataflow analysis framework from SOOT to inspect state transitions at each program point.
Public Perceptions Of Anorexia Nervosa, Katherine Karas
Public Perceptions Of Anorexia Nervosa, Katherine Karas
Theses and Dissertations
Despite the severe impact of anorexia nervosa if left untreated, it has been estimated that only roughly 10% of those meeting diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa ever seek out effective treatment. The most cited potential barrier to treatment seeking for general mental health issues is an individual's fear of stigmatization (Corrigan, 2004), but this has never having been examined specifically for anorexia nervosa, In order to further the understanding as to how stigmatization may affect treatment seeking for individuals with anorexia nervosa, it is first necessary to establish the currently held stereotypes for anorexia nervosa. It is the goal of …

An Analysis Of Co2-Driven Cold-Water Geysers In Green River, Utah And Chimayo, New Mexico, Zachary T. Watson
Theses and Dissertations
The eruption periodicity, CO2 bubble volume fraction, eruption velocity, flash depth and mass emission of CO2 were determined from multiple wellbore CO2-driven cold-water geysers (Crystal and Tenmile geysers, in Utah and Chimayó geyser in New Mexico). Utilizing a suite of temporal water sample datasets from multiple field trips to Crystal geyser, systematic and repeated trends in effluent water chemistry have been revealed. Crystal geyser has a four part eruption cycle composed of a minor eruption period (mEP), major eruption period (MEP), aftershock eruption period (Ae) and recharge (R). Tenmile geyser has a four part eruption cycle composed of MEP, drainage …
Predicting Outcome At Posttreatment For Adolescent Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder In A Residential Treatment Setting, Heather M. Jones
Predicting Outcome At Posttreatment For Adolescent Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder In A Residential Treatment Setting, Heather M. Jones
Theses and Dissertations
Exposure and response prevention (ERP) paired with psychopharmacological interventions are considered first line treatments for pediatric obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Recent literature has emphasized the importance of investigating effectiveness and treatment outcomes for difficult-to-treat cases of pediatric OCD who do not respond to outpatient treatment. Effectiveness studies have found that adolescent patients treated in residential settings have demonstrated gains comparable to those patients included in published outpatient outcomes studies (Bjorgvinsson et al., 2008; Leonard et al., 2014). Current research efforts are needed to 1) better predict gains in real-world clinical settings and 2) identify risk factors for difficult-to-treat patients who …
Spatial Dimensions Of Tower Karst And Cockpit Karst: A Case Study Of Guilin, China, Wei Huang
Spatial Dimensions Of Tower Karst And Cockpit Karst: A Case Study Of Guilin, China, Wei Huang
Theses and Dissertations
Tower karst (fenglin) and cockpit karst (fengcong) are two globally important representative styles of tropical karst. Previously proposed sequential and parallel development models are preliminary, and geomorphological studies to date do not provide enough satisfactory evidence to delineate the spatial and temporal relation between the two landscapes. This unclear interpretation of tower-cockpit relationships not only obscures understanding of the process-form dynamics of these tropical karst landforms, but also confuses their definition. Moreover, previous technological limitations, as well as the fragmental nature of the karst landscapes, has limited incorporation of geologic and other data into broad geospatial frameworks based on geographic …
Caring And Cleaning "On Par": The Work Of Au Pairs & Housecleaners In The Chicagoland Area, Anna Kuroczycka Schultes
Caring And Cleaning "On Par": The Work Of Au Pairs & Housecleaners In The Chicagoland Area, Anna Kuroczycka Schultes
Theses and Dissertations
Immigrant domestic workers are perceived as highly exploitable and expendable employees, yet they are entangled in a very complex global exchange of services. The main purpose of this study will be to revise existing knowledge and assumptions about the female migrant service sector, especially within the field of domestic and care labor, by comparing the work of au pairs with housecleaners. Although these two forms of work appear to have many similarities on the surface, they are actually at opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of visibility and regulation. Unlike the highly regulated nature of au pair work and …
Framing The Policy Debate: Competing Portrayals Of Technology In Online Content Regulation And Lessons From Science And Technology Studies, Jeremy John Mauger
Framing The Policy Debate: Competing Portrayals Of Technology In Online Content Regulation And Lessons From Science And Technology Studies, Jeremy John Mauger
Theses and Dissertations
In an effort to control access to certain online content, the U.S. Congress has repeatedly mandated the use of powerful regulatory technologies such as Domain Name System blocking, Internet Service Provider filtering, age verification systems, and commercial filtering software. The application of these enforcement mechanisms may have serious implications for constitutional rights, individual freedom, and autonomy. This research will show that policies including the Communications Decency Act, the Child Online Protection Act, the Children's Internet Protection Act, the Stop Online Piracy Act, and the PROTECT Intellectual Property Act all have the potential to negatively impact these rights. Although the motivations …
Novel Protein Secretion And Chitin Utilization Machinery Of Flavobacterium Johnsoniae, Sampada Suresh Kharade
Novel Protein Secretion And Chitin Utilization Machinery Of Flavobacterium Johnsoniae, Sampada Suresh Kharade
Theses and Dissertations
Flavobacterium johnsoniae, a member of phylum Bacteroidetes, is a gliding bacterium that digests insoluble chitin. A novel protein secretion system, the Type IX secretion system (T9SS), secretes the motility adhesins SprB and RemA and is also required for chitin utilization. In order to understand F. johnsoniae chitin utilization and the role of the T9SS, Fjoh_4555 (chiA) was targeted for analysis. Disruption of chiA resulted in cells that failed to digest chitin and complementation restored this ability. Antisera raised against ChiA were used to characterize its secretion. ChiA was secreted in soluble form by wild-type cells but remained cell-associated in T9SS …
A Novel Transport Based Model For Wire Media And Its Application To Scattering Problems, Ebrahim Forati
A Novel Transport Based Model For Wire Media And Its Application To Scattering Problems, Ebrahim Forati
Theses and Dissertations
Artificially engineered materials, known as metamaterials, have attracted the interest of researchers because of the potential for novel applications. Effective modeling of metamaterials is a crucial step for analyzing and synthesizing devices. In this thesis, we focus on wire medium (both isotropic and uniaxial) and validate a novel transport based model for them.
Scattering problems involving wire media are computationally intensive due to the spatially dispersive nature of homogenized wire media. However, it will be shown that using the new model to solve scattering problems can simplify the calculations a great deal.
For scattering problems, an integro-differential equation based on …

Speech Perception In Reverberated Condition By Cochlear Implants, Moulesh Bhandary
Theses and Dissertations
Previous Studies for bilateral cochlear implants users examined cocktail -party setting under anechoic listening conditions. However in real world listeners always encounter problems of reverberation, which could significantly deteriorate speech intelligibility for all listeners, independent of their hearing status.
The object of this study is to investigate the effects of reverberation on the binaural benefits for speech recognition by bilateral cochlear-implant (CI) listeners.
Bilateral CI subject was tested under different reverberation conditions. IEEE recorded sentences from one male speaker mixed with either speech shaped noise (ssn), energy masking, or with 2 female competing takers (2fsn), informational masking, at different signal …
Transgender College Student Activists: The Intersections Of Identities, Les Tyler Johnson
Transgender College Student Activists: The Intersections Of Identities, Les Tyler Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Transgender students, sometimes motivated by their experiences of marginalization, other times driven to bring meaning to their lives, participate in activism on their college campuses in efforts to enact social change. This qualitative study sought to learn how transgender college students describe the intersection between their gender and activist identities, and the role other identities play at the intersection. Situated in the theoretical framework of intersectionality, I used data from interviews to construct narratives where participants describe the place where their identities meet. Learning more about the intersection of transgender students' gender and activist identities is significant to inform the …
