Examining The Lived Experience Of Caregivers Learning A Home Program From A Pediatric Occupational Therapist, Michelle Finet
Examining The Lived Experience Of Caregivers Learning A Home Program From A Pediatric Occupational Therapist, Michelle Finet
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of family caregivers as they learned a home program from an occupational therapist for their child. Gaining information from the caregiver on experiences with patient education may enable therapists to develop an understanding of the needs of caregivers during the educational process that occurs when a therapist is giving the caregiver a home program. Meeting the learning needs of the caregivers may possibly reduce the amount of overall therapy needed by the child. This phenomenological approach sought to answer the following research questions: (a) what are the lived experiences …
The Effects Of A One-To-One Ipad Initiative: A Case Study, Michael Flanagan
The Effects Of A One-To-One Ipad Initiative: A Case Study, Michael Flanagan
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative case study explored the ways that teachers in a single private middle school integrated one-to-one tablet use in to their classroom practice. The case study also explored how and in what ways the students and teachers perceived that school-provided one-to-one student access to tablets affected student learning. The review of relevant literature included the use of technology in instruction, external factors affecting teachers, and the perception of the effect of technology on student learning.
Over the last thirty years, there has been an increase of computer and tablet use in the classroom (Harold, 2016; Reidel, 2014; Smerdon, Cronen, …
Regulatory Mechanisms In Borrelia Burgdorferi-Induced Arthritis, Emily Siebers Hansen
Regulatory Mechanisms In Borrelia Burgdorferi-Induced Arthritis, Emily Siebers Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Lyme arthritis is a common symptom of Lyme borreliosis that involves inflammation of the synovial joints. Elucidating the immune events involved in Lyme arthritis is complicated by the fact that not all individuals infected with B. burgdorferi develop arthritis. Additionally, Lyme arthritis manifests in different severities between affected individuals. It is known that an inflammatory response is initiated by B. burgdorferi infection and that inflammatory T cells contribute to the development of arthritis. However, the anti-inflammatory mechanisms that regulate the pathogenic T cells’ response are not entirely understood. Here, the hypothesis that a dysregulated immune response results in an excessive …
On The Mechanical Response In Boundary Resisted Motion, Maliha Maisha Rahman
On The Mechanical Response In Boundary Resisted Motion, Maliha Maisha Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
In engineering and science literature, there seems to be a lack of consensus on a modeling framework clarifying how resistance to boundary motion affects mechanical performance. By mechanical performance, is implied the action of a force moving an object from one point to another that generates changes in position, velocity, acceleration and jerk. Apart from affecting a whole vehicle, critical power transmission components and subcomponents all rely on the mechanical responses that change due to an applied force. For example, the power needed to move an aircraft, an automobile, a ship, a submarine etc. will be reduced if resistance to …
The Influences Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors On The Relationships Among Work-Family Conflict, Stress, And Turnover Intention In Saudi Arabian Registered Nurses, Sitah S. Alshutwi
The Influences Of Family Supportive Supervisor Behaviors On The Relationships Among Work-Family Conflict, Stress, And Turnover Intention In Saudi Arabian Registered Nurses, Sitah S. Alshutwi
Theses and Dissertations
Many countries around the world are struggling to maintain adequate number of nurses. Inadequate nurse staffing could compromise the quality of patient care. Among many factors that contribute to RN turnover, the influence of work–family conflict (WFC) has gained little attention. In Saudi Arabia, the turnover rate among Saudi nurses reached 50 % of the total employed nurses. Work-family conflict was found to be a reason that influence Saudi nurses to leave their workplace. In addition, WFC was found to be significantly association with increased turnover intention (TI) among employees. Furthermore, WFC has been linked to a number of negative …

A qualitative study to explore the sociotechnical factors experienced by women participating in an HIV support group in urban Malawi was conducted to enhance our understanding of women’s experience with mobile phone use and …
The Impact Of Nanomaterial Functionalization And Core Chemical Composition On Toxicity To Daphnia Magna, Jared S. Bozich
The Impact Of Nanomaterial Functionalization And Core Chemical Composition On Toxicity To Daphnia Magna, Jared S. Bozich
Theses and Dissertations
Nanomaterials (NMs) are being developed for a variety of industrial, biomedical, and environmental applications. Initially these materials consisted of simple metal oxides or carbon based NMs. More recently NMs have become increasingly complex consisting of multiple transition metals and surfaces functionalized with polymers, surfactants and ligands that have the ability to alter their physiochemical properties and enhance performance. As manufactured NM production increases, so does the concern about their release into the environment and potentially harmful effects. The focus of toxicology has largely been on first generation materials and we have comparatively less information about the potential impacts of complex …
The Potential Effect Of Breastfeeding On Maternal Senstivity During The First Year Of Life, Sawsan Hammad Hammad
The Potential Effect Of Breastfeeding On Maternal Senstivity During The First Year Of Life, Sawsan Hammad Hammad
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Poor maternal sensitivity leads to insecure infant attachment, which has been associated with negative consequences in cognitive and mental health in school-aged children that continue into adulthood. Maternal sensitivity is defined as the mother’s ability to recognize and respond to her infant’s cues consistently and appropriately; it is indicative of the interactions between mothers and their infants, which is characterized by mutual and concurrent interchanges, often referred to as the “mother-infant dance” If the mother is able to accurately recognize her infant’s cues, then she can provide an appropriate and secure foundation to encourage the infant’s exploration, watching over …

Patient-Delivered Partner Therapy: Elicitation Research Using A Mixed-Method Study Design To Support The Development Of A Behavioral Intervention For Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinic Patients, Steven Alan John
Theses and Dissertations
The transmission of sexually transmitted infections (i.e., STIs) remains a preventable public health problem within the United States. Repeatedly acquired STIs are highly prevalent despite efficacious treatment options, and mechanisms to increase partner notification are paramount to decreasing reinfections. One mechanism to accelerate the time to partner treatment, increase partner treatment, reduce repeat infections, and reduce community prevalence of STIs is the use of patient-delivered partner therapy (PDPT). PDPT is the practice of providing patients diagnosed with a bacterial STI medication to give directly to their partner for treatment without requiring the partner to participate in diagnostic testing, screening, or …

In an effort to contribute to rhetorical theories of “identification” this dissertation examines Anglo nature writing written for Anglo audiences in the United States over several centuries. In my conclusion, I suggest approaches current nature writers might use to offer audiences ways of engaging with Indigenous peoples and Native conceptions of environment that are more ethical, appropriate, and effective than approaches used in previous centuries. I maintain that such approaches could potentially …
Did Magnet Schools Improve Student Educational Outcomes As A Tool Of Desegregation?, Maureen Elizabeth Pylman
Did Magnet Schools Improve Student Educational Outcomes As A Tool Of Desegregation?, Maureen Elizabeth Pylman
Theses and Dissertations
Magnet schools were implemented in American school districts beginning in the 1970s as part of desegregation plans often required by court order. Magnet schools had three primary goals: provide innovative educational programming, attract students from across school districts, and assist with desegregation. Research evaluating the implementation of magnet schools found that they did effectively desegregate schools (Arcia 2006; Steel and Levine 1994). However, the educational outcomes of magnet schools have not been evaluated, particularly using longitudinal student data, to evaluate magnet school effectiveness. Popular press, the use of effective pedagogy, selection procedures, and exclusivity lead to expectations that magnet schools …

Bringing The Outside In: Examining The Impacts That Climate, Exchange, And Identity Processes Have On Organizationally-Beneficial Employee Green Behavior, Sashi C. Sekhar
Theses and Dissertations
My dissertation contributes to growing practitioner and researcher interest in the corporate social responsibility topic of employee green behavior, a key strategic input to organizational environmental sustainability efforts. While it has been recognized that employee behavior can significantly impact sustainability efforts (Daily, Bishop, and Govindarajulu, 2009; Ones and Dilchert, 2012), the psychological mechanisms through which this occurs and the precise nature of these behaviors have not been rigorously examined. To address the gaps, my research investigates the interrelationship between organizational and individual factors in motivating organizational citizenship behavior directed toward the natural environment (OCB-E). The model, which derives from social …

An Adapative Treecode-Accelerated Boundary Integral Solver For Computing The Electrostatics Of A Biomolecule, Andrew Joseph Szatkowski
An Adapative Treecode-Accelerated Boundary Integral Solver For Computing The Electrostatics Of A Biomolecule, Andrew Joseph Szatkowski
Theses and Dissertations
The Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) is a widely-used model in the calculation of electrostatic potential for solvated biomolecules. PBE is an interface problem defined in the whole space with the interface being a molecular surface of a biomolecule, and has been solved numerically by finite difference, finite element, and boundary integral methods. Unlike the finite difference and finite element methods, the boundary integral method works directly over the whole space without approximating the whole space problem into an artificial boundary value problem. Hence, it is expected to solve PBE in higher accuracy. However, so far, it was only applied to a …

Death Keeps No Calendar: Dating Mortuary Hardware From The Saints Peter And Paul Parish Church Cemetery, Amanda Marie Roller
Theses and Dissertations
The concern of the Saints Peter and Paul parish members regarding the history and identity of the individuals buried in an almost forgotten section of the cemetery created an opportunity for archaeologists to work with a community by providing a voice for those buried there and facilitating community understanding and healing. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the temporal indicators of the Saints Peter and Paul cemetery to determine if the coffin hardware and associated artifacts present in excavated burials reflect the expected time of interment. The expected period of interment is 1872-1930. Coffin hardware and associated artifacts …
Gender Reflections: A Reconsideration Of Pictish Mirror And Comb Symbols, Traci N. Billings
Gender Reflections: A Reconsideration Of Pictish Mirror And Comb Symbols, Traci N. Billings
Theses and Dissertations
The interpretation of prehistoric iconography is complicated by the tendency to project
contemporary male/female gender dichotomies into the past. Pictish monumental stone sculpture
in Scotland has been studied over the last 100 years. Traditionally, mirror and comb symbols
found on some stones produced in Scotland between AD 400 and AD 900 have been interpreted
as being associated exclusively with women and/or the female gender. This thesis re-examines
this assumption in light of more recent work to offer a new interpretation of Pictish mirror and
comb symbols and to suggest a larger context for their possible meaning. Utilizing the Canmore
database, …

Synthesis And Analysis Of Carbon-Transition Metal Oxide Composites, Binod Manandhar
Synthesis And Analysis Of Carbon-Transition Metal Oxide Composites, Binod Manandhar
Theses and Dissertations
Graphene, a two-dimensional honeycomb structure of carbon due to its high electrical and thermal conductivity, and high specific surface area, is an excellent candidate for nano-electronics and energy storage. However, it is very difficult and expensive to produce a single layered graphene by the traditional method of mechanical exfoliation of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). It is mainly manufactured by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or more economically by chemical exfoliation of graphite by Hummer’s modified method. But there is a major disadvantage in using the chemical exfoliation, instead of forming single layer of pure graphene, a non-stoichiometric and insulating graphene …
The Waiting House, Erika Marie Mueller
The Waiting House, Erika Marie Mueller
Theses and Dissertations
The poems in this collection, The Waiting House, use techniques associated with an evolving elegiac tradition in their portrayal of anticipatory grief born of terminal illness and impending loss. Like the melancholic mourning of modern elegies described by Jahan Ramazani, my poems often resist consolation even as they borrow from elegiac conventions like poetic substitution and repetition. Additionally, they utilize strategies and patterns of literary anger outlined by Alicia Suskin Ostriker as common in postwar American women’s poetry, to express anger that is also anticipatory grief. Finally, this collection uses illness metaphors to question the well being of a larger …
Feature-Sensitive And Adaptive Image Triangulation: A Super-Pixel-Based Scheme For Image Segmentation And Mesh Generation, Ming Xu
Theses and Dissertations
With increasing utilization of various imaging techniques (such as CT, MRI and PET) in medical fields, it is often in great need to computationally extract the boundaries of objects of interest, a process commonly known as image segmentation. While numerous approaches have been proposed in literature on automatic/semi-automatic image segmentation, most of these approaches are based on image pixels. The number of pixels in an image can be huge, especially for 3D imaging volumes, which renders the pixel-based image segmentation process inevitably slow. On the other hand, 3D mesh generation from imaging data has become important not only for visualization …
